40ALL THINGS HOWEVER PROPERLY AND WITH ORDER SHOULD BE DONE. 40But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.
1I MAKE KNOWN NOW TO YOU, BROTHERS, THE GOSPEL THAT I EVANGELISED TO YOU, WHICH ALSO YOU RECEIVED, IN WHICH ALSO YOU HAVE STOOD The Resurrection of Christ 1Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm.
2THROUGH WHICH ALSO YOU ARE BEING SAVED, TO THE WORD I EVANGELISED TO YOU IF YOU HOLD FAST, UNLESS ONLY EXCEPT IN VAIN YOU HAVE BELIEVED. 2By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
3I DELIVERED FOR TO YOU IN [THE] FOREMOST WHAT ALSO I RECEIVED THAT CHRIST DIED FOR THE SINS OF US ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES 3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4AND THAT HE WAS BURIED AND THAT HE HAS BEEN RAISED ON THE DAY THE THIRD ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES 4that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5AND THAT HE APPEARED TO CEPHAS, THEN TO THE TWELVE. 5and that He appeared to Cephas*NoteCloseThat is, Peter and then to the Twelve.
6THEREAFTER HE APPEARED TO ABOVE FIVE HUNDRED BROTHERS AT ONCE OF WHOM THE GREATER PART REMAIN UNTIL NOW, SOME HOWEVER AND WERE FALLEN ASLEEP. 6After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
7THEN HE APPEARED TO JAMES, THEN TO THE APOSTLES ALL. 7Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
8LAST THEN OF ALL AS AN UNTIMELY BIRTH HE APPEARED ALSO TO ME. 8And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.
9I MYSELF FOR AM THE LEAST OF THE APOSTLES WHO NOT AM FIT TO BE CALLED AN APOSTLE, BECAUSE I PERSECUTED THE CHURCH <THE> OF GOD; 9For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10BY [THE] GRACE HOWEVER OF GOD I AM WHAT I AM, AND THE GRACE OF HIM <THE> TOWARD ME MYSELF NOT VOID HAS BEEN, RATHER MORE EXCESSIVE THAN THEM ALL I TOILED, NOT I MYSELF HOWEVER, BUT THE GRACE <THE> OF GOD THAT [WAS] WITH ME MYSELF. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not in vain. No, I worked harder than all of them— yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
11WHETHER THEREFORE I MYSELF OR THEY, THUS WE PREACH AND THUS YOU BELIEVED. 11Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.
12IF NOW CHRIST IS PREACHED THAT OUT FROM [THE] DEAD HE HAS BEEN RAISED, HOW SAY AMONG YOU SOME THAT A RESURRECTION OF [THE] DEAD NOT THERE IS? The Resurrection of the Dead 12But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13IF HOWEVER A RESURRECTION OF [THE] DEAD NOT THERE IS, NEITHER CHRIST HAS BEEN RAISED; 13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.
14IF THEN CHRIST NOT HAS BEEN RAISED, [IS] VOID THEN ALSO THE PREACHING OF US, VOID NOW ALSO THE FAITH OF YOU. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith.
15WE ARE FOUND THEN ALSO FALSE WITNESSES <THE> OF GOD, BECAUSE WE HAVE WITNESSED CONCERNING <THE> GOD THAT HE RAISED UP <THE> CHRIST WHOM NOT HE HAS RAISED IF INDEED THEN [THE] DEAD NOT ARE RAISED; 15In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.
16IF FOR [THE] DEAD NOT ARE RAISED, NEITHER CHRIST HAS BEEN RAISED; 16For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised.
17IF THEN CHRIST NOT HAS BEEN RAISED, [IS] FUTILE THE FAITH OF YOU IS; STILL YOU ARE IN THE SINS OF YOU; 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
18THEN ALSO THOSE HAVING FALLEN ASLEEP IN CHRIST HAVE PERISHED. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
19IF IN <THE> LIFE THIS IN CHRIST ALREADY HOPING WE ARE ONLY, MORE TO BE PITIED THAN ALL MEN WE ARE. 19If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men.
20NOW HOWEVER CHRIST HAS BEEN RAISED OUT FROM [THE] DEAD, FIRSTFRUIT OF THOSE HAVING FALLEN ASLEEP HE BECAME. The Order of Resurrection 20But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
21SINCE FOR THROUGH A MAN [CAME] <THE> DEATH ALSO THROUGH A MAN RESURRECTION OF [THE] DEAD. 21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
22FOR AS INDEED IN <THE> ADAM ALL DIE, SO ALSO IN <THE> CHRIST ALL WILL BE MADE ALIVE. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
23EACH HOWEVER IN THE OWN ORDER: [THE] FIRSTFRUIT CHRIST, THEN THOSE <THE> OF CHRIST AT THE COMING OF HIM; 23But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.
24THEN THE END, WHEN HE MAY HAND OVER THE KINGDOM TO THE GOD AND FATHER, WHEN HE MAY HAVE ANNULLED ALL DOMINION AND ALL AUTHORITY AND POWER; 24Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power.
25IT BEHOOVES FOR HIM TO REIGN UNTIL THAT WHEN HE MAY HAVE PUT ALL THE ENEMIES UNDER THE FEET OF HIM. 25For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
27ALL THINGS FOR HE HAS PUT IN SUBJECTION UNDER THE FEET OF HIM; WHEN HOWEVER IT MAY BE SAID THAT ALL THINGS HAVE BEEN PUT IN SUBJECTION, [IT IS] EVIDENT THAT [IS] EXCEPTED THE [ONE WHO] HAVING PUT IN SUBJECTION TO HIM <THE> ALL THINGS; 27For “God has put everything under His feet.”*NoteClosePsalm 8:6 Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
28WHEN NOW SHALL HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO HIM <THE> ALL THINGS, THEN ALSO HIMSELF THE SON WILL BE PUT IN SUBJECTION TO THE [ONE] HAVING PUT IN SUBJECTION TO HIM <THE> ALL THINGS, SO THAT MAY BE <THE> GOD <THE> ALL IN ALL. 28And when all things have been subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will be made subject to Him who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all.
29OTHERWISE WHAT WILL THEY DO WHO ARE BAPTIZED FOR THE DEAD? IF AT ALL [THE] DEAD NOT ARE RAISED; WHY ALSO ARE THEY BAPTIZED FOR <THE> THEM? 29If these things are not so, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?
31EVERY DAY I DIE, AS SURELY AS <THE> IN YOU BOASTING, BROTHERS WHICH I HAVE IN CHRIST JESUS THE LORD OF US. 31I face death every day, brothers, as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord.
32IF ACCORDING TO MAN I FOUGHT WILD BEASTS IN EPHESUS, WHAT TO ME THE PROFIT? IF [THE] DEAD NOT ARE RAISED, LET US EAT AND LET US DRINK, TOMORROW FOR WE DIE. 32If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 22:13
33NOT DO BE MISLED: DO CORRUPT MORALS GOOD COMPANIONSHIPS BAD. 33Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”*NoteCloseProbably a quote from the Greek comedy Thais by Menander
34DO SOBER UP RIGHTEOUSLY AND NOT DO SIN; IGNORANCE FOR OF GOD SOME HAVE; TO [THE] SHAME OF YOU I SPEAK. 34Sober up as you ought, and stop sinning; for some of you are ignorant of God. I say this to your shame.
35BUT WILL SAY SOMEONE; HOW ARE RAISED THE DEAD? WITH WHAT THEN BODY DO THEY COME? The Resurrection Body 35But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come? ”
36FOOL YOU YOURSELF WHAT YOU SOW NOT DOES COME TO LIFE ONLY UNLESS IT MAY DIE; 36You fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
37AND WHAT YOU SOW, NOT THE BODY THAT WILL BE YOU SOW BUT A BARE GRAIN, IF IT WOULD BE OF WHEAT OR OF SOME OF THE REST; 37And what you sow is not the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else.
38<THE> BUT GOD GIVES TO IT A BODY EVEN AS HE HAS WILLED AND TO EACH OF THE SEEDS <THE> [ITS] OWN BODY. 38But God gives it a body as He has designed, and to each kind of seed He gives its own body.
39NOT ALL FLESH [IS] THE SAME FLESH BUT ONE INDEED FLESH OF MEN, ANOTHER HOWEVER FLESH OF BEASTS, ANOTHER HOWEVER FLESH OF BIRDS ANOTHER HOWEVER OF FISH. 39Not all flesh is the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another birds another and fish another.
40AND BODIES [THERE ARE] HEAVENLY AND BODIES EARTHLY; BUT ONE INDEED [IS] THE OF THE HEAVENLY GLORY, ANOTHER HOWEVER THAT OF THE EARTHLY. 40There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies. But the splendor of the heavenly bodies is of one degree, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is of another.
41ONE [IS] [THE] GLORY OF [THE] SUN, AND ANOTHER [THE] GLORY OF [THE] MOON, AND ANOTHER [THE] GLORY OF [THE] STARS; STAR FOR FROM STAR DIFFERS IN GLORY. 41The sun has one degree of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.
42SO ALSO [IS] THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD. IT IS SOWN IN DECAY, IT IS RAISED IN IMMORTALITY; 42So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable.
43IT IS SOWN IN DISHONOR, IT IS RAISED IN GLORY; IT IS SOWN IN WEAKNESS, IT IS RAISED IN POWER; 43It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
44IT IS SOWN A BODY NATURAL, IT IS RAISED A BODY SPIRITUAL. IF THERE IS A BODY NATURAL, THERE IS ALSO BODY SPIRITUAL. 44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
45SO ALSO IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: BECAME THE FIRST MAN ADAM INTO A SOUL LIVING; THE LAST ADAM INTO A SPIRIT LIFE-GIVING. 45So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”;*NoteCloseGenesis 2:7 the last Adam a life-giving spirit.
46HOWEVER NOT FIRST [WAS] THE SPIRITUAL BUT THE NATURAL, THEN THE SPIRITUAL. 46The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual.
47THE FIRST MAN [WAS] FROM [THE] EARTH MADE OF DUST, THE SECOND MAN [IS] THE LORD FROM HEAVEN. 47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.
48AS THE [ONE] MADE OF DUST, SO ALSO [ARE] THOSE OF THE EARTH, AND AS THE HEAVENLY [ONE], SO ALSO THOSE OF HEAVEN; 48As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.
49AND EVEN AS WE HAVE BORN THE IMAGE OF THE EARTHLY, WE WILL BEAR ALSO THE IMAGE OF THE HEAVENLY. 49And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man.
50THIS NOW I SAY, BROTHERS, THAT FLESH AND BLOOD [THE] KINGDOM OF GOD TO INHERIT NOT IS ABLE, NOR THE DECAY THE IMMORTALITY DOES INHERIT. Where, O Death, Is Your Victory? (Hosea 13:9–14) 50Now I declare to you brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
51BEHOLD A MYSTERY TO YOU I TELL; ALL INDEED NOT WE WILL SLEEP, ALL HOWEVER WE WILL BE CHANGED — 51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
52IN AN INSTANT IN [THE] TWINKLING OF AN EYE AT THE LAST TRUMPET; [THE] TRUMPET WILL SOUND FOR, AND THE DEAD WILL BE RAISED IMPERISHABLE, AND WE OURSELVES WILL BE CHANGED. 52in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
53IT BEHOOVES FOR <THE> PERISHABLE THIS TO PUT ON IMPERISHABLE AND <THE> MORTAL THIS TO PUT ON IMMORTALITY. 53For the perishable must be clothed*NoteCloseOr clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
54WHEN NOW <THE> PERISHABLE THIS MAY HAVE PUT ON [THE] IMPERISHABLE AND <THE> MORTAL THIS MAY HAVE PUT ON <THE> IMMORTALITY, THEN WILL COME TO PASS THE WORD WHICH WRITTEN: HAS BEEN SWALLOWED UP <THE> DEATH IN VICTORY. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality,*NoteCloseWH does not include and the mortal with immortality. then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 25:8
55WHERE OF YOU, O DEATH, THE VICTORY WHERE OF YOU, O DEATH, THE STING 55“Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?”*NoteCloseHosea 13:14 (see also LXX); BYZ and TR “Where, O Death, is your sting? Where, O Hades, is your victory?”
56<THE> AND THE STING <THE> OF DEATH [IS] <THE> SIN, <THE> AND THE POWER <THE> OF SIN THE LAW. 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
57<THE> HOWEVER TO GOD [BE] THANKS WHO IS GIVING US THE VICTORY THROUGH THE LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST. 57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
58THEREFORE, BROTHERS OF MINE BELOVED, STEADFAST DO BE, IMMOVABLE, ABOUNDING IN THE WORK OF THE LORD ALWAYS, KNOWING THAT THE TOIL OF YOU NOT IS IN VAIN IN [THE] LORD. 58Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
