21AND THEY REJOICED ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND AND THE CITY IT WAS AT PEACE AND <OBJ.> ATHALIAH THEY HAD PUT TO DEATH WITH THE SWORD 21and all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because Athaliah had been put to the sword.
1[WAS] A SON OF SEVEN YEARS JOASH WHEN BECAME KING HE AND FORTY YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] ZIBIAH FROM BEER SHEBA Joash Repairs the Temple (2 Kings 12:1–16) 1Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba.
2AND HE DID JOASH THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ALL [THE] DAYS OF JEHOIADA THE PRIEST 2And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3AND HE TOOK FOR HIM JEHOIADA WIVES TWO AND HE FATHERED SONS AND DAUGHTERS 3Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters.
4AND IT WAS AFTER THIS IT WAS WITH [THE] HEART OF JOASH TO RENEW <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 4Some time later, Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the LORD.
5AND HE ASSEMBLED <OBJ.> THE PRIESTS AND THE LEVITES AND HE SAID TO THEM GO OUT TO [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH AND COLLECT FROM ALL ISRAEL MONEY TO REPAIR <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF GOD YOUR AS OFTEN AS A YEAR IN A YEAR AND YOU YOU WILL DO QUICKLY <TO> THE MATTER AND NOT THEY ACTED QUICKLY THE LEVITES 5So he gathered the priests and Levites and said “Go out to the cities of Judah and collect the money due annually from all Israel, to repair the house of your God. Do it quickly.” The Levites, however, did not make haste.
6AND HE SUMMONED THE KING <TO> JEHOIADA THE CHIEF AND HE SAID TO HIM WHY? NOT HAVE YOU REQUIRED ON THE LEVITES TO BRING FROM JUDAH AND FROM JERUSALEM <OBJ.> [THE] TAX OF MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH AND OF THE ASSEMBLY OF ISRAEL TO [THE] TENT OF THE TESTIMONY 6So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”
7FOR ATHALIAH THE WICKEDNESS SONS HER THEY HAD BROKEN INTO <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD AND ALSO ALL [THE] HOLY THINGS OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH THEY HAD USED FOR THE BAALS 7For the sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God and had even used the sacred objects of the house of the LORD for the Baals.
8AND HE SAID THE KING AND THEY MADE A CHEST ONE AND THEY PUT IT AT [THE] GATE OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH [THE] OUTSIDE TOWARDS 8At the king’s command a chest was made and placed outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD.
9AND THEY MADE A PROCLAMATION IN JUDAH AND IN JERUSALEM TO BRING TO YAHWEH [THE] TAX OF MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF <THE> GOD ON ISRAEL IN THE WILDERNESS 9And a proclamation was issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they were to bring to the LORD the tax imposed by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness.
10AND THEY WERE GLAD ALL THE OFFICIALS AND ALL THE PEOPLE AND THEY BROUGHT AND THEY THREW TO THE CHEST UNTIL <TO> FINISHED 10All the officers and all the people rejoiced and brought their contributions, and they dropped them in the chest until it was full.
11AND IT WAS AT [THE] TIME [WHEN] SOMEONE BROUGHT <OBJ.> THE CHEST TO [THE] OVERSEER OF THE KING BY [THE] HAND OF THE LEVITES AND JUST AS SAW THEY THAT [WAS] MUCH THE MONEY AND HE CAME [THE] SCRIBE OF THE KING AND [THE] OFFICER OF [THE] PRIEST OF THE HEAD SO THEY MAY POUR OUT <OBJ.> THE CHEST AND THEY TOOK IT AND THEY RETURNED IT TO PLACE ITS THUS THEY DID TO A DAY IN A DAY AND THEY GATHERED MONEY TO ABUNDANCE 11Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance.
12AND HE GAVE IT THE KING AND JEHOIADA TO [THE] DOER OF [THE] WORK OF [THE] SERVICE OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND THEY WERE HIRING STONE CUTTERS AND CRAFTSMEN TO RENEW [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND ALSO <TO> CRAFTSMEN OF IRON AND BRONZE TO REPAIR <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 12Then the king and Jehoiada would give the money to those who supervised the labor on the house of the LORD to hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, as well as workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD.
13AND THEY WORKED [THE] DOERS OF THE WORK AND IT WENT UP [THE] REPAIR FOR THE WORK BY HAND THEIR AND THEY ERECTED <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD ON MEASUREMENT ITS AND THEY STRENGTHENED IT 13So the workmen labored, and in their hands the repair work progressed. They restored the house of God according to its specifications, and they reinforced it.
14AND JUST AS HAD FINISHED THEY THEY BROUGHT <TO> BEFORE THE KING AND JEHOIADA <OBJ.> [THE] REMAINDER OF THE MONEY AND SOMEONE MADE IT ARTICLES FOR [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH ARTICLES OF SERVICE AND OFFERING UP AND PANS AND ARTICLES OF GOLD AND SILVER AND THEY WERE OFFERING UP BURNT OFFERINGS IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH CONTINUALLY ALL [THE] DAYS OF JEHOIADA 14When they were finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada, and with it were made articles for the house of the LORD— utensils for the service and for the burnt offerings, dishes, and other objects of gold and silver. Throughout the days of Jehoiada, burnt offerings were presented regularly in the house of the LORD.
15AND HE BECAME OLD JEHOIADA AND HE WAS SATISFIED DAYS AND HE DIED A SON OF ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEAR[S] AT DEATH HIS Jehoiada’s Death and Burial 15When Jehoiada was old and full of years, he died at the age of 130.
16AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID WITH THE KINGS FOR HE HAD DONE GOOD IN ISRAEL AND WITH <THE> GOD AND HOUSE HIS 16And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
17AND AFTER [THE] DEATH OF JEHOIADA THEY CAME [THE] LEADERS OF JUDAH AND THEY BOWED DOWN TO THE KING THEN HE LISTENED THE KING TO THEM The Wickedness of Joash 17After the death of Jehoiada, however, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.
18AND THEY ABANDONED <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR AND THEY SERVED <OBJ.> THE ASHERAH POLES AND <OBJ.> THE IDOLS AND IT WAS WRATH TOWARDS JUDAH AND JERUSALEM IN GUILT THEIR THIS 18They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.
19AND HE SENT AMONG THEM PROPHETS TO BRING BACK THEM TO YAHWEH AND THEY WARNED <IN> THEM AND NOT THEY GAVE EAR 19Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to Him and to testify against them, but they would not listen.
20AND [THE] SPIRIT OF GOD IT CLOTHED <OBJ.> ZECHARIAH [THE] SON OF JEHOIADA THE PRIEST AND HE STOOD <FROM> ABOVE <TO> THE PEOPLE AND HE SAID TO THEM THUS HE SAYS <THE> GOD <TO> WHY? [ARE] YOU TRANSGRESSING <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF YAHWEH AND NOT YOU WILL PROSPER FOR YOU HAVE FORSAKEN <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND HE HAS FORSAKEN <OBJ.> YOU 20Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has forsaken you.’”
21AND THEY CONSPIRED ON HIM AND THEY STONED HIM STONE[S] BY [THE] COMMAND OF THE KING IN [THE] COURTYARD OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 21But they conspired against Zechariah, and by order of the king, they stoned him in the courtyard of the house of the LORD.
22AND NOT HE REMEMBERED JOASH THE KING THE LOYALTY WHICH HE HAD DONE JEHOIADA FATHER HIS WITH HIM AND HE KILLED <OBJ.> SON HIS AND WHEN DYING HE HE SAID MAY HE SEE YAHWEH AND MAY HE REQUIRE 22Thus King Joash failed to remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead, Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he lay dying, Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”
23AND IT WAS TO [THE] CIRCUIT OF THE YEAR IT CAME UP ON HIM [THE] ARMY OF ARAM AND THEY CAME TO JUDAH AND JERUSALEM AND THEY DESTROYED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] LEADERS OF THE PEOPLE FROM [THE] PEOPLE AND ALL BOOTY THEIR THEY SENT TO [THE] KING OF DAMASCUS The Death of Joash (2 Kings 12:17–21) 23In the spring,*NoteCloseLiterally At the turn of the year the army of Aram went to war against Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people and they sent all the plunder to their king in Damascus.
24FOR WITH SMALLNESS OF MEN THEY CAME [THE] ARMY OF ARAM AND YAHWEH HE GAVE IN HAND THEIR AN ARMY FOR MULTITUDE EXCEEDINGLY FOR THEY HAD FORSAKEN <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR AND WITH JOASH THEY DID JUDGMENT<S> 24Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army. Because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on Joash.
25AND WHEN WENT THEY FROM HIM FOR THEY HAD LEFT <OBJ.> HIM WITH SICKNESSES GREAT THEY CONSPIRED ON HIM OWN SERVANTS HIS IN [THE] BLOOD<S> OF [THE] SONS OF JEHOIADA THE PRIEST AND THEY KILLED HIM ON BED HIS AND HE DIED AND THEY BURIED HIM IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID AND NOT THEY BURIED HIM IN [THE] GRAVES OF THE KINGS 25And when the Arameans had withdrawn they left Joash severely wounded. His own servants conspired against him for shedding the blood of the son*NoteCloseLXX and Vulgate; Hebrew of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
26AND THESE [ARE] THE [ONES WHO] CONSPIRED ON HIM ZABAD [THE] SON OF SHIMEATH THE AMMONITE [WOMAN] AND JEHOZABAD [THE] SON OF SHIMRITH THE MOABITE [WOMAN] 26Those who conspired against Joash were Zabad*NoteCloseZabad is a variant of Jozabad; see 2 Kings 12:21. son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad son of Shimrith*NoteCloseShimrith is a variant of Shomer; see 2 Kings 12:21. the Moabitess.
27AND SONS HIS IT WILL BE NUMEROUS OF THE ORACLE ON HIM AND [THE] FOUNDING OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD THERE THEY [ARE] WRITTEN ON [THE] RECORD OF [THE] SCROLL OF THE KINGS AND HE BECAME KING AMAZIAH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 27The accounts of the sons of Joash and the many pronouncements about him, and of the restoration*NoteCloseOr founding of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise*NoteCloseOr Exposition or Study of the Book of the Kings. And his son Amaziah reigned in his place.
