1AND THEY TOOK ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH <OBJ.> UZZIAH AND HE [WAS] A SON OF SIX- TEEN YEAR[S] AND THEY MADE KING <OBJ.> HIM IN PLACE OF FATHER HIS AMAZIAH Uzziah Reigns in Judah (2 Kings 14:21–22; 2 Kings 15:1–7) 1All the people of Judah took Uzziah,*NoteCloseUzziah is also called Azariah; throughout this chapter; see 2 Kings 14:21. who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
2HE HE BUILT <OBJ.> ELATH AND HE RESTORED IT TO JUDAH AFTER LAY DOWN THE KING WITH ANCESTORS HIS 2Uzziah was the one who rebuilt Eloth*NoteCloseEloth is a variant of Elath; see LXX, 2 Kings 14:22, and 2 Kings 16:6. and restored it to Judah after King Amaziah*NoteCloseLiterally after the king rested with his fathers.
3[WAS] A SON OF SIX- TEEN YEAR[S] UZZIAH WHEN BECAME KING HE AND FIFTY AND TWO YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] JECHOLIAH FROM JERUSALEM 3Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem.
4AND HE DID THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD DONE AMAZIAH FATHER HIS 4And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done.
5AND HE WAS TO SEEK GOD IN [THE] DAYS OF ZECHARIAH WHO WAS SKILLED IN [THE] SEEING OF <THE> GOD AND IN [THE] DAYS OF SEEKING HE <OBJ.> YAHWEH HE MADE PROSPER HIM <THE> GOD 5He sought God throughout the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear*NoteCloseMany Hebrew manuscripts, LXX, and Syriac; other Hebrew manuscripts through the vision of God. And as long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.
6AND HE WENT OUT AND HE FOUGHT AGAINST THE PHILISTINES AND HE MADE A BREACH IN <OBJ.> [THE] WALL OF GATH AND <OBJ.> [THE] WALL OF JABNEH AND <OBJ.> [THE] WALL OF ASHDOD AND HE BUILT CITIES IN ASHDOD AND AMONG THE PHILISTINES 6Uzziah went out to wage war against the Philistines, and he tore down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod. Then he built cities near Ashdod and among the Philistines.
7AND HE HELPED HIM <THE> GOD ON [THE] PHILISTINES AND ON THE ARABS WHO WERE DWELLING IN GUR BAAL AND THE MEUNITES 7God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs living in Gur-baal, and against the Meunites.
8AND THEY PAID THE AMMONITES TRIBUTE TO UZZIAH AND IT WENT NAME HIS TILL TO [THE] ENTRANCE OF EGYPT FOR HE DISPLAYED STRENGTH TO <TO> UPWARDS <TOWARDS> 8The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he had become exceedingly powerful.
9AND HE BUILT UZZIAH TOWERS IN JERUSALEM AT [THE] GATE OF THE CORNER AND AT [THE] GATE OF THE VALLEY AND AT THE BUTTRESS AND HE MADE STRONG THEM 9Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and the angle in the wall, and he fortified them.
10AND HE BUILT TOWERS IN THE WILDERNESS AND HE DUG WELLS MANY FOR LIVESTOCK MUCH IT BELONGED TO <THE> HIM AND IN THE SHEPHELAH AND IN THE PLAIN FARMERS AND VINEDRESSERS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND IN THE ORCHARDS FOR LOVING [THE] GROUND HE WAS 10Since he had much livestock in the foothills*NoteCloseHebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea and in the plain, he built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns. And since he was a lover of the soil, he had farmers and vinedressers in the hill country and in the fertile fields.
11AND IT BELONGED TO UZZIAH AN ARMY DOING <OF> BATTLE [THOSE WHO] GO FORTH OF WAR TO TROOP[S] BY [THE] NUMBER OF MUSTER THEIR BY [THE] HAND OF JEIEL THE SCRIBE AND MAASEIAH THE OFFICIAL ON [THE] HAND OF HANANIAH ONE OF [THE] OFFICIALS OF THE KING 11Uzziah had an army ready for battle that went out to war by assigned divisions, as recorded by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.
12ALL [THE] NUMBER OF [THE] HEADS OF THE FATHERS OF MIGHTY [MEN] OF STRENGTH TWO THOUSAND AND SIX HUNDRED<S> 12The total number of family leaders of the mighty men of valor was 2,600.
13AND [WAS] ON HAND THEIR AN ARMY OF WAR THREE HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND SEVEN THOUSAND<S> AND FIVE HUNDRED<S> DOERS OF BATTLE WITH POWER OF STRENGTH TO HELP <TO> THE KING ON THE ENEMY 13Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
14AND HE PREPARED FOR THEM UZZIAH FOR ALL THE ARMY SHIELDS AND SPEARS AND HELMETS AND BODY ARMOR<S> AND BOWS AND <TO> STONES OF SLINGS 14Uzziah supplied the entire army with shields, spears, helmets, armor, bows, and slingstones.
15AND HE MADE IN JERUSALEM WAR ENGINES OF INVENTION OF AN INVENTOR TO BE ON THE TOWERS AND ON THE CORNERS TO SHOOT WITH <THE> ARROWS AND WITH <THE> STONES LARGE AND IT WENT OUT NAME HIS TO <TO> FROM A DISTANCE FOR HE MADE WONDERFUL TO BE HELPED UNTIL FOR HE WAS STRONG 15And in Jerusalem he made skillfully designed devices to shoot*NoteCloseOr to protect those who shoot arrows and catapult large stones from the towers and corners. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was helped tremendously until he became powerful.
16AND ACCORDING TO STRENGTHENING HIS IT WAS HAUGHTY HEART HIS UNTIL <TO> BEHAVED CORRUPTLY AND HE ACTED UNFAITHFULLY AGAINST YAHWEH GOD HIS AND HE WENT INTO [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH TO MAKE SMOKE ON [THE] ALTAR OF <THE> INCENSE 16But when Uzziah became powerful, his arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
17AND HE WENT AFTER HIM AZARIAH THE PRIEST AND [WERE] WITH HIM PRIESTS OF YAHWEH EIGHTY SONS OF STRENGTH 17Then Azariah the priest, along with eighty brave priests of the LORD, went in after him.
18AND THEY TOOK THEIR STAND ON UZZIAH THE KING AND THEY SAID TO HIM NOT [BELONGS] TO YOU O UZZIAH TO MAKE SMOKE TO YAHWEH FOR TO THE PRIESTS [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON WHO ARE CONSECRATED TO MAKE SMOKE GO OUT FROM THE SANCTUARY FOR YOU HAVE ACTED UNFAITHFULLY AND NOT OF YOU FOR HONOR FROM YAHWEH GOD 18They took their stand against King Uzziah and said “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
19AND HE WAS ENRAGED UZZIAH AND [WAS] IN HAND HIS A CENSER TO MAKE SMOKE AND WHEN ENRAGING HE WITH THE PRIESTS AND <THE> SKIN DISEASE IT AROSE ON FOREHEAD HIS <TO> BEFORE THE PRIESTS IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH FROM ON TO [THE] ALTAR OF <THE> INCENSE 19Uzziah, with a censer in his hand to offer incense, was enraged. But while he raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense, leprosy*NoteCloseLeprosy was a term used for various skin diseases; see Leviticus 13. broke out on his forehead.
20AND HE TURNED TO HIM AZARIAH [THE] PRIEST OF THE HEAD AND ALL THE PRIESTS AND THERE! HE [WAS] LEPROUS ON FOREHEAD HIS AND THEY HASTENED HIM FROM THERE AND ALSO HE HE HURRIED HIMSELF TO GO OUT FOR HE HAD STRUCK HIM YAHWEH 20When Azariah the chief priest and all the priests turned to him and saw his leprous forehead, they rushed him out. Indeed, he himself hurried to get out, because the LORD had afflicted him.
21AND HE WAS UZZIAH THE KING LEPROUS UNTIL [THE] DAY OF DEATH HIS AND HE DWELT [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> SEPARATENESS LEPROUS FOR HE WAS CUT OFF FROM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND JOTHAM SON HIS [WAS] OVER [THE] HOUSE OF THE KING JUDGING <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND 21So King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He lived in isolation, leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace and governed the people of the land.
22AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF UZZIAH <THE> FORMER AND <THE> LATTER HE HAS WRITTEN ISAIAH [THE] SON OF AMOZ THE PROPHET 22As for the rest of the acts of Uzziah, from beginning to end, they are recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.
23AND HE LAY DOWN UZZIAH WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM WITH ANCESTORS HIS IN [THE] FIELD OF <THE> GRAVE WHICH [BELONGED] TO THE KINGS FOR THEY SAID [WAS] LEPROUS HE AND HE BECAME KING JOTHAM SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 23And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried near them*NoteCloseLiterally with his fathers in a field of burial that belonged to the kings, for the people said, “He was a leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
