1 TO BOAST IT BEHOOVES [ME], NOT IS IT PROFITABLE INDEED, I WILL GO ON HOWEVER TO VISIONS AND REVELATIONS OF [THE] LORD.
Paul’s Revelation
1 I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to gain I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.
2 I KNOW A MAN IN CHRIST AGO YEARS FOURTEEN — WHETHER IN [THE] BODY NOT I KNOW, OR OUT OF THE BODY NOT I KNOW, <THE> GOD KNOWS — HAVING BEEN CAUGHT UP <THE> SUCH A MAN UNTIL [THE] THIRD HEAVEN.
2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of it I do not know, but God knows.
3 AND I KNOW <THE> SUCH A MAN — WHETHER IN [THE] BODY OR OUT OF THE BODY, NOT I KNOW, <THE> GOD KNOWS —
3 And I know that this man— whether in the body or out of it I do not know, but God knows—
4 THAT HE WAS CAUGHT UP INTO <THE> PARADISE AND HE HEARD INEXPRESSIBLE DECLARATION WHICH NOT BEING PERMITTED TO MAN TO SPEAK.
4 was caught up to Paradise The things he heard were inexpressible, things that man is not permitted to tell.
5 CONCERNING <THE> SUCH A MAN I WILL BOAST, CONCERNING HOWEVER MYSELF NOT I WILL BOAST ONLY EXCEPT IN THE WEAKNESSES OF MINE;
Paul’s Thorn and God’s Grace
5 I will boast about such a man, but I will not boast about myself, except in my weaknesses.
6 IF FOR I SHALL DESIRE TO BOAST, NOT I WILL BE A FOOL; [THE] TRUTH FOR I WILL BE SPEAKING; I REFRAIN HOWEVER LEST ANYONE TO ME MYSELF MAY CREDIT MORE THAN WHAT HE SEES IN ME, OR HEARS ANYTHING OF ME
6 Even if I wanted to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
7 AND THE BY SURPASSINGNESS OF THE REVELATIONS. THEREFORE THAT NOT I MAY BECOME CONCEITED, WAS GIVEN TO ME A THORN <THE> IN [MY] FLESH, A MESSENGER OF SATAN THAT ME HE MAY BUFFET SO THAT NOT I MAY BECOME CONCEITED.
7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations.
So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.
8 FOR THIS THREE TIMES THE LORD I BEGGED THAT IT MAY DEPART FROM ME.
8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
9 AND HE HAS SAID TO ME; SUFFICES YOU THE GRACE OF MINE; THE FOR POWER OF MINE IN WEAKNESS IS FINISHED. MOST GLADLY THEREFORE RATHER WILL I BOAST IN THE WEAKNESSES OF MINE, SO THAT MAY REST UPON ME MYSELF THE POWER <THE> OF CHRIST.
9 But He said to me,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.
10 THEREFORE I TAKE PLEASURE IN WEAKNESSES, IN INSULTS, IN HARDSHIPS, IN PERSECUTIONS AND DIFFICULTIES FOR CHRIST; WHEN FOR I MAY BE WEAK THEN STRONG I AM.
10 That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
11 I HAVE BECOME A FOOL BOASTING; YOU YOURSELVES ME COMPELLED. I MYSELF FOR WAS BEING OBLIGED BY YOU TO HAVE BEEN COMMENDED; [IN] NO[THING] FOR WAS I INFERIOR TO THOSE MOST EMINENT APOSTLES, IF EVEN NO [THING] I AM.
Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians
11 I have become a fool, but you drove me to it. In fact, you should have commended me, since I am in no way inferior to those “super-apostles, even though I am nothing.
12 THE INDEED SIGNS OF THE APOSTLE WERE PERFORMED AMONG YOU IN ALL PERSEVERANCE, IN SIGNS BOTH AND IN WONDERS AND IN MIRACLES.
12 The marks of a true apostle— signs, wonders, and miracles— were performed among you with great perseverance.
13 IN WHAT FOR IS IT THAT YOU WERE INFERIOR BEYOND THE REST [OF THE] CHURCHES, ONLY EXCEPT THAT MYSELF I MYSELF NOT DID BURDEN YOU? DO FORGIVE ME <THE> WRONG THIS!
13 In what way were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong!
14 BEHOLD THIRD TIME THIS READY I AM TO COME TO YOU AND NOT I WILL BURDEN YOU; NOT FOR I SEEK WHAT [IS] YOURS BUT YOU. NOT FOR OUGHT THE CHILDREN FOR THE PARENTS TO TREASURE UP BUT THE PARENTS FOR THE CHILDREN;
14 See I am ready to come to you a third time, and I will not be a burden, because I am not seeking your possessions, but you. For children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
15 I MYSELF NOW MOST GLADLY WILL SPEND AND I WILL BE UTTERLY SPENT FOR THE SOULS OF YOU, IF EVEN MORE ABUNDANTLY YOU LOVING LESS I AM LOVED!
15 And for the sake of your souls, I will most gladly spend my money and myself. If I love you more, will you love me less?
16 IT SHOULD BE HOWEVER, I MYSELF NOT DID BURDEN YOU; BUT BEING CRAFTY BY TRICKERY YOU I CAUGHT.
16 Be that as it may, I was not a burden to you; but crafty as I am, I caught you by trickery.
17 SURELY NOT ANY OF WHOM I HAVE SENT TO YOU, THROUGH HIM DID I EXPLOIT YOU?
17 Did I exploit you by anyone I sent you?
18 I URGED TITUS [TO GO] AND SENT WITH [HIM] THE BROTHER; SURELY NOT EVER DID EXPLOIT YOU TITUS? SURELY IN THE SAME SPIRIT DID WE WALK? NOT IN THE SAME STEPS?
18 I urged Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother with him. Did Titus exploit you in any way? Did we not walk in the same Spirit and follow in the same footsteps?
19 PREVIOUSLY YOU HAVE BEEN THINKING THAT TO YOU WE ARE PRESENTING A DEFENSE. BEFORE <THE> GOD IN CHRIST WE SPEAK. <THE> BUT ALL THINGS, BELOVED, FOR <THE> YOUR EDIFICATION.
19 Have you been thinking all along that we were making a defense to you? We speak before God in Christ, and all of this, beloved, is to build you up.
20 I FEAR FOR LEST PERHAPS HAVING COME NOT SUCH AS I WISH I MAY FIND YOU, AND I MYSELF MAY BE FOUND BY YOU SUCH AS NOT YOU DO WISH, LEST PERHAPS A QUARREL, JEALOUSY, ANGER, CONTENTIONS SLANDER, GOSSIP, CONCEIT, DISORDER,
20 For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, rage, rivalry, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.
21 LEST AGAIN WHEN WAS COMING I HE MAY HUMBLE ME THE GOD, OF MINE BEFORE YOU, AND I MAY MOURN OVER MANY OF THOSE HAVING SINNED BEFORE AND NOT HAVING REPENTED OF THE IMPURITY AND OF SEXUAL IMMORALITY AND OF SENSUALITY THAT THEY HAVE PRACTICED.
21 I am afraid that when I come again, my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of their acts of impurity, sexual immorality, and debauchery.
