38SORROWING ESPECIALLY OVER THE WORD THAT HE HAD SPOKEN THAT NO LONGER THEY ARE ABOUT THE FACE OF HIM TO SEE. THEY WERE ACCOMPANYING THEN HIM TO THE SHIP. 38They were especially grieved by his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
1AFTER THEN IT HAPPENED SAILING OUR HAVING DRAWN AWAY FROM THEM, HAVING RUN DIRECTLY WE CAME TO <THE> COS, <THE> AND THE NEXT [DAY] TO <THE> RHODES, AND FROM THERE TO PATARA. Paul’s Journey to Jerusalem 1After we had torn ourselves away from them, we sailed directly to Cos, and the next day on to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
2AND HAVING FOUND A BOAT PASSING OVER INTO PHOENICIA HAVING GONE ON BOARD WE SET SAIL. 2Finding a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded it and set sail.
3HAVING SIGHTED THEN <THE> CYPRUS AND HAVING LEFT IT ON THE LEFT WE WERE SAILING TO SYRIA AND WE DISEMBARKED AT TYRE; THERE FOR THE SHIP WAS UNLOADING THE CARGO. 3After sighting Cyprus and passing south of it, we sailed on to Syria and landed at Tyre, where the ship was to unload its cargo.
4AND HAVING SOUGHT OUT THEN THE DISCIPLES WE REMAINED THERE DAYS SEVEN, WHO <THE> TO PAUL WERE TELLING THROUGH THE SPIRIT NOT TO GO UP TO JERUSALEM. 4We sought out the disciples in Tyre and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they kept telling Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.
5WHEN THEN IT HAPPENED THAT WE [WERE] COMPLETING THE DAYS, HAVING SET OUT WE WERE JOURNEYING WHILE ARE ACCOMPANYING US EVERYONE WITH WIVES AND CHILDREN AS FAR AS OUTSIDE THE CITY, AND HAVING BOWED THE KNEES ON THE SHORE HAVING PRAYED 5But when our time there had ended, we set out on our journey. All the disciples, with their wives and children, accompanied us out of the city and knelt down on the beach to pray with us.
6WE GREETED ONE ANOTHER AND WE WENT UP INTO THE BOAT, THEY THEN RETURNED TO <THE> [THEIR] OWN. 6And after we had said our farewells we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.
7WE OURSELVES THEN THE VOYAGE HAVING COMPLETED FROM TYRE CAME DOWN TO PTOLEMAIS, AND HAVING GREETED THE BROTHERS WE STAYED DAY ONE WITH THEM. 7When we had finished our voyage from Tyre, we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for a day.
8ON THE NOW NEXT DAY HAVING GONE FORTH THOSE WITH <THE> PAUL WE CAME TO CAESAREA, AND HAVING ENTERED INTO THE HOUSE OF PHILIP THE EVANGELIST WHO IS BEING OF THE SEVEN WE STAYED WITH HIM. Paul Visits Philip the Evangelist 8Leaving the next day, we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven.*NoteCloseSee Acts 6:5.
9WITH THIS [MAN] NOW THERE WERE DAUGHTERS FOUR VIRGINS PROPHESYING. 9He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
10REMAINING NOW OF US DAYS MANY CAME DOWN A CERTAIN ONE FROM <THE> JUDEA A PROPHET NAMED AGABUS, 10After we had been there several days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
11AND HAVING COME TO US AND HAVING TAKEN THE BELT <THE> OF PAUL, HAVING BOUND BOTH OF HIMSELF THE FEET AND THE HANDS HE SAID; THUS SAYS THE SPIRIT <THE> HOLY; THE MAN OF WHOM IS <THE> BELT THIS, IN THIS WAY WILL BIND IN JERUSALEM THE JEWS AND WILL DELIVER [HIM] INTO [THE] HANDS OF [THE] GENTILES. 11Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands, and said, The Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and hand him over to the Gentiles. ’”
12WHEN THEN WE HAD HEARD THESE THINGS, WERE BEGGING WE OURSELVES BOTH AND THOSE OF THAT PLACE <THE> NOT TO GO UP HIM TO JERUSALEM. 12When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.
13THEN ANSWERED <THE> PAUL; WHAT ARE YOU DOING WEEPING AND BREAKING MY <THE> HEART? I MYSELF FOR NOT ONLY TO BE BOUND BUT ALSO TO DIE AT JERUSALEM READINESS HAVE FOR THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. 13Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. ”
14NOT IS BEING PERSUADED THEN HE WE WERE SILENT HAVING SAID; OF THE LORD THE WILL SHOULD BE [DONE]. 14When he would not be dissuaded, we quieted down and said, “The Lord’s will be done. ”
15AFTER NOW <THE> DAYS THESE HAVING PACKED THE BAGGAGE WE WERE ASCENDING TO JERUSALEM. 15After these days, we packed up and went on to Jerusalem.
16WENT THEN ALSO [SOME] OF THE DISCIPLES FROM CAESAREA WITH US, BRINGING [ONE] WITH WHOM WE MAY LODGE, MNASON A CERTAIN CYPRIOT, AN EARLY DISCIPLE. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us, and they took us to stay at the home of Mnason the Cypriot, an early disciple.
17HAVING ARRIVED NOW WE AT JERUSALEM GLADLY RECEIVED US THE BROTHERS. Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem 17When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us joyfully.
18ON THE NOW FOLLOWING [DAY] WAS GOING IN <THE> PAUL WITH US UNTO JAMES, ALL AND ARRIVED THE ELDERS. 18The next day Paul went in with us to see James, and all the elders were present.
19AND HAVING GREETED THEM HE WAS RELATING BY ONE EACH OF THE THINGS DID <THE> GOD AMONG THE GENTILES THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF HIM. 19Paul greeted them and recounted one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.
20THOSE THEN HAVING HEARD WERE GLORIFYING <THE> GOD, THEY SAID THEN TO HIM; YOU SEE BROTHER, HOW MANY MYRIADS THERE ARE AMONG THE JEWS WHO HAVING BELIEVED AND ALL ZEALOUS ONES FOR THE LAW ARE. 20When they heard this, they glorified God. Then they said to Paul, “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law.
21THEY HAVE BEEN INFORMED NOW ABOUT YOU THAT APOSTASY YOU TEACH FROM MOSES THOSE AMONG THE GENTILES ALL JEWS TELLING NOT TO CIRCUMCISE THEM THE CHILDREN NOR IN THE CUSTOMS TO WALK. 21But they are under the impression that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or observe our customs.
22WHAT THEN IS IT? CERTAINLY SHOULD MULTITUDE TO ASSEMBLE THEY WILL HEAR FOR THAT YOU HAVE COME. 22What then should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.
23THIS THEREFORE DO YOU WHAT TO YOU WE SAY; THERE ARE WITH US MEN FOUR A VOW HAVING ON THEMSELVES; 23Therefore do what we advise you. There are four men with us who have taken a vow.
24THESE [MEN] HAVING TAKEN DO BE PURIFIED WITH THEM AND DO BEAR EXPENSE FOR THEM SO THAT THEY WILL SHAVE THE HEAD, AND WILL KNOW ALL THAT OF WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN INFORMED ABOUT YOU NO [THING] IS, BUT YOU WALK ORDERLY ALSO YOURSELF KEEPING THE LAW. 24Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that there is no truth to these rumors about you, but that you also live in obedience to the law.
25CONCERNING NOW THOSE HAVING BELIEVED OF THE GENTILES WE OURSELVES WROTE TO HAVING ADJUDGED NOTHING SUCH TO KEEP THEM ONLY EXCEPT TO KEEP FROM THEM THE BOTH IDOL-SACRIFICES AND <THE> BLOOD AND WHAT IS STRANGLED AND SEXUAL IMMORALITY. 25As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. ”
26THEN <THE> PAUL HAVING TAKEN THE MEN ON THE FOLLOWING DAY WITH THEM HAVING BEEN PURIFIED WAS ENTERING INTO THE TEMPLE DECLARING THE FULFILLMENT OF THE DAYS OF THE PURIFICATION UNTIL THAT WAS OFFERED FOR ONE EACH OF THEM THE SACRIFICE. 26So the next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he entered the temple to give notice of the date when their purification would be complete and the offering would be made for each of them.
27WHEN NOW WERE ABOUT THE SEVEN DAYS TO BE COMPLETED, THE FROM <THE> ASIA JEWS HAVING SEEN HIM IN THE TEMPLE WERE STIRRING UP ALL THE CROWD AND LAID UPON HIM <THE> HANDS Paul Seized at the Temple 27When the seven days were almost over, some Jews from the province of Asia*NoteCloseLiterally from Asia; Asia was a Roman province in what is now western Turkey. saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him,
28CRYING OUT; MEN ISRAELITES, DO HELP. THIS IS THE MAN WHO AGAINST THE PEOPLE AND THE LAW AND <THE> PLACE THIS ALL THOSE EVERYWHERE TEACHING, BESIDES AND ALSO GREEKS HE HAS BROUGHT INTO THE TEMPLE AND HAS DEFILED <THE> HOLY PLACE THIS. 28crying out, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and against our law and against this place. Furthermore, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place. ”
29IT WAS THEY FOR HAVING FORESEEN TROPHIMUS THE EPHESIAN IN THE CITY WITH HIM, WHOM THEY WERE SUPPOSING THAT INTO THE TEMPLE HAD BROUGHT <THE> PAUL. 29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
30WAS THROWN INTO COMMOTION ALSO THE CITY WHOLE AND THERE WAS A RUSHING TOGETHER OF THE PEOPLE, AND HAVING LAID HOLD <THE> OF PAUL THEY WERE DRAGGING HIM OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE; AND IMMEDIATELY WERE SHUT THE DOORS. 30The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut.
31OF THEM SEEKING THEN HIM TO KILL THERE CAME A REPORT TO THE COMMANDER OF THE COHORT THAT ALL ARE IN AN UPROAR JERUSALEM; 31While they were trying to kill him, the commander of the Roman regiment*NoteCloseLiterally the commander of the cohort received a report that all Jerusalem was in turmoil.
32WHO AT ONCE HAVING TAKEN WITH [HIM] SOLDIERS AND CENTURIONS RAN DOWN UPON THEM. <THE> AND HAVING SEEN THE COMMANDER AND THE SOLDIERS THEY STOPPED BEATING <THE> PAUL. 32Immediately he took some soldiers and centurions and ran down to the crowd. When the people saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
33THEN HAVING DRAWN NEAR THE COMMANDER LAID HOLD OF HIM AND HE COMMANDED [HIM] TO BE BOUND WITH CHAINS TWO AND HE WAS INQUIRING WHO MAYBE HE WOULD BE AND WHAT IT IS HE HAVING DONE. 33The commander came up and arrested Paul, ordering that he be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.
34OTHERS HOWEVER ANOTHER [OR] ONE THING WERE CRYING OUT IN THE CROWD. NOT IS BEING ABLE NOW HE TO KNOW THE FACTS ON ACCOUNT OF THE UPROAR HE ORDERED TO BE BROUGHT HIM INTO THE BARRACKS. 34Some in the crowd were shouting one thing, and some another. And since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks.
35WHEN NOW HE CAME TO THE STAIRS, IT HAPPENED THAT BEING CARRIED HE BY THE SOLDIERS BECAUSE OF THE VIOLENCE OF THE CROWD; 35When Paul reached the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob.
36WERE FOLLOWING FOR THE MULTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE CRYING OUT; AWAY WITH HIM. 36For the crowd that followed him kept shouting, “Away with him! ”
37BEING ABOUT THEN TO BE BROUGHT INTO THE BARRACKS <THE> PAUL SAYS TO THE COMMANDER; IF IS IT PERMITTED TO ME TO SAY SOMETHING TO YOU? <THE> THEN HE WAS SAYING; GREEK DO YOU KNOW? Paul Addresses the Crowd 37As they were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, May I say something to you? ” “Do you speak Greek? ” he replied.
38SURELY THEN YOU YOURSELF ARE THE EGYPTIAN <THE> BEFORE THESE THE DAYS HAVING LED A REVOLT AND HAVING LED OUT INTO THE WILDERNESS THE FOUR THOUSAND MEN OF THE ASSASSINS? 38Aren’t you the Egyptian who incited a rebellion some time ago and led four thousand members of the Assassins into the wilderness? ”
39SAID HOWEVER <THE> PAUL; I MYSELF A MAN INDEED AM A JEW OF TARSUS <THE> OF CILICIA NOT [OF AN] INSIGNIFICANT CITY A CITIZEN, I IMPLORE HOWEVER YOU; DO ALLOW ME TO SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE. 39But Paul answered, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Now I beg you to allow me to speak to the people. ”
40WHEN WAS PERMITTING THEN HE <THE> PAUL HAVING STOOD ON THE STAIRS MADE A SIGN WITH THE HAND TO THE PEOPLE, GREAT THEN SILENCE HAVING TAKEN PLACE HE ADDRESSED [THEM] IN THE HEBREW LANGUAGE SAYING: 40Having received permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd A great hush came over the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew:*NoteCloseOr in Aramaic; literally in the Hebrew language
