42EVERY THEN DAY IN THE TEMPLE AND IN HOUSE NOT THEY WERE CEASING TEACHING AND EVANGELISING [THAT] THE CHRIST [IS] JESUS. 42Every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
1IN NOW <THE> DAYS THESE WHEN ARE MULTIPLYING THE DISCIPLES THERE AROSE A GRUMBLING OF THE HELLENISTS AGAINST THE HEBREWS, BECAUSE WERE BEING OVERLOOKED IN THE DISTRIBUTION <THE> DAILY THE WIDOWS OF THEM. The Choosing of the Seven (1 Timothy 3:8–13) 1In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews*NoteCloseLiterally the Hellenists began to grumble against the Hebrews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.
2HAVING CALLED NEAR THEN THE TWELVE THE MULTITUDE OF THE DISCIPLES THEY SAID; NOT DESIRABLE IT IS [FOR] US HAVING NEGLECTED THE WORD <THE> OF GOD TO ATTEND AT TABLES. 2So the Twelve summoned all the disciples and said, “It is unacceptable for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables.
3DO SELECT THEREFORE, BROTHERS, MEN OUT FROM YOURSELVES BEING WELL ATTESTED SEVEN FULL OF [THE] SPIRIT HOLY AND WISDOM WHOM WE WILL APPOINT OVER <THE> TASK THIS; 3Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will assign this responsibility to them
4WE OURSELVES NOW IN THE PRAYER AND IN THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD WILL STEADFASTLY CONTINUE. 4and will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. ”
5AND PLEASED THE STATEMENT BEFORE ALL THE MULTITUDE, AND THEY CHOSE STEPHEN, A MAN FULL OF FAITH AND [OF THE] SPIRIT HOLY, AND PHILIP AND PROCHORUS AND NICANOR AND TIMON AND PARMENAS AND NICOLAS A CONVERT OF ANTIOCH, 5This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, as well as Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.*NoteCloseLiterally and Nicolas, a convert of Antioch
6WHOM THEY SET BEFORE THE APOSTLES, AND HAVING PRAYED THEY LAID ON THEM THE HANDS. 6They presented these seven to the apostles,*NoteCloseLiterally —whom they set before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7AND THE WORD <THE> OF GOD WAS INCREASING, AND WAS MULTIPLIED THE NUMBER OF THE DISCIPLES IN JERUSALEM EXCEEDINGLY, A GREAT THEN MULTITUDE OF THE PRIESTS WERE BECOMING OBEDIENT TO THE FAITH. 7So the word of God continued to spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew rapidly, and a great number of priests became obedient to the faith.
8STEPHEN NOW FULL OF GRACE AND POWER WAS PERFORMING WONDERS AND SIGNS GREAT AMONG THE PEOPLE. The Arrest of Stephen 8Now Stephen, who was full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.
9AROSE HOWEVER CERTAIN OF THOSE FROM THE SYNAGOGUE WHICH IS BEING NAMED FREEDMEN INCLUDING CYRENIANS AND ALEXANDRIANS AND OF THOSE FROM CILICIA AND ASIA, DISPUTING <THE> WITH STEPHEN; 9But resistance arose from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from the provinces of Cilicia and Asia.*NoteCloseLiterally and those from Cilicia and Asia; the Roman Province of Asia was located in what is now western Turkey. They disputed with Stephen,
10AND NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO WITHSTAND AGAINST THE WISDOM AND AGAINST THE SPIRIT BY WHOM HE WAS SPEAKING. 10but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
11THEN THEY SUBORNED MEN SAYING THAT WE HAVE HEARD WHEN HE IS SPEAKING DECLARATIONS BLASPHEMOUS AGAINST MOSES AND <THE> GOD; 11Then they prompted some men to say “We heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God. ”
12THEY STIRRED UP THEN THE PEOPLE AND THE ELDERS AND THE SCRIBES, AND HAVING COME UPON [HIM] THEY SEIZED HIM AND THEY BROUGHT [HIM] TO THE COUNCIL, 12So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes and confronted Stephen. They seized him and brought him before the Sanhedrin,*NoteCloseOr the Council; also in verse 15
13THEY SET ALSO WITNESSES FALSE SAYING; <THE> MAN THIS NOT DOES STOP SPEAKING DECLARATIONS BLASPHEMOUS AGAINST THE PLACE <THE> HOLY THIS AND THE LAW; 13where they presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
14WE HAVE HEARD FOR HIM SAYING THAT JESUS <THE> OF NAZARETH THIS WILL DESTROY <THE> PLACE THIS AND WILL CHANGE THE CUSTOMS THAT DELIVERED TO US MOSES. 14For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us. ”
15AND HAVING LOOKED INTENTLY ON HIM ALL THOSE SITTING IN THE COUNCIL SAW THE FACE OF HIM AS [THE] FACE OF AN ANGEL. 15All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
