24AND IT WENT [THE] HAND OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL GOING AND HARD ON JABIN [THE] KING OF CANAAN UNTIL THAT THEY CUT OFF <OBJ.> JABIN [THE] KING OF CANAAN 24And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of Canaan until they destroyed him.
1AND SHE SANG DEBORAH AND BARAK [THE] SON OF ABINOAM ON THE DAY <THE> THAT <TO> SAYING The Song of Deborah and Barak (Exodus 15:1–21) 1On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:
2WHEN ACTED AS LEADERS HEADS IN ISRAEL WHEN VOLUNTEERS A PEOPLE BLESS YAHWEH 2“When the princes take the lead in Israel, when the people volunteer, bless the LORD.
3HEAR O KINGS GIVE EAR O RULERS I TO YAHWEH I I WILL SING I WILL SING PRAISES TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 3Listen, O kings! Give ear, O princes! I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.
4O YAHWEH WHEN GOING OUT YOU FROM SEIR WHEN MARCHING YOU FROM [THE] REGION OF EDOM [THE] EARTH IT SHOOK BOTH [THE] HEAVENS THEY DROPPED AS WELL AS [THE] CLOUDS THEY DROPPED WATER 4O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched from the land of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down water.
5[THE] MOUNTAINS THEY FLOWED FROM BEFORE YAHWEH THIS SINAI FROM BEFORE YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 5The mountains quaked before the LORD, the One of Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel.
6IN [THE] DAYS OF SHAMGAR [THE] SON OF ANATH IN [THE] DAYS OF JAEL THEY CEASED ROADS AND WALKERS OF PATHS THEY WALKED ROADS TWISTING 6In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways.
7THEY CEASED RURAL PEOPLE IN ISRAEL THEY CEASED UNTIL THAT I AROSE DEBORAH THAT I AROSE A MOTHER IN ISRAEL 7Life in the villages ceased; it ended in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel.
8IT CHOSE GODS NEW THEN BREAD GATES A SHIELD IF IT WAS SEEN AND A SPEAR AMONG FORTY THOUSAND IN ISRAEL 8When they chose new gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or spear was found among forty thousand in Israel.
9HEART MY [IS] FOR [THE] COMMANDERS OF ISRAEL THOSE [WHO] VOLUNTEERED AMONG THE PEOPLE BLESS YAHWEH 9My heart is with the princes of Israel, with the volunteers among the people. Bless the LORD!
10O RIDERS OF FEMALE DONKEYS TAWNY O [YOU WHO] SIT ON CLOTH GARMENTS AND O WALKERS ON [THE] ROAD TELL OUT 10You who ride white donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, and you who travel the road, ponder
11FROM [THE] SOUND OF ARCHERS BETWEEN [THE] PLACES FOR DRAWING WATER THERE THEY WILL RECOUNT [THE] RIGHTEOUSNESS<ES> OF YAHWEH [THE] RIGHTEOUSNESS<ES> OF RURAL PEOPLE HIS IN ISRAEL THEN THEY WENT DOWN TO THE GATES [THE] PEOPLE OF YAHWEH 11the voices of the singers*NoteCloseOr archers or those who divide the sheep at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers*NoteCloseOr warriors in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
12AWAKE AWAKE O DEBORAH AWAKE AWAKE SPEAK A SONG ARISE O BARAK AND TAKE CAPTIVE CAPTIVE[S] YOUR O SON OF ABINOAM 12‘Awake, awake, O Deborah! Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, O Barak, and take hold of your captives, O son of Abinoam!’
13THEN HE WENT DOWN [THE] SURVIVOR[S] OF [THE] NOBLES [THE] PEOPLE YAHWEH HE WENT DOWN TO <THE> ME AMONG THE MIGHTY [ONES] 13Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
14SOME OF EPHRAIM ROOT THEIR [WAS] IN AMALEK AFTER YOU BENJAMIN [WAS] AMONG PEOPLE<S> YOUR FROM MAKIR THEY CAME DOWN COMMANDERS AND FROM ZEBULUN [THOSE WHO] MARCH WITH [THE] STAFF OF A MUSTER-OFFICER 14Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from Zebulun.
15AND PRINCES MY IN ISSACHAR [WERE] WITH DEBORAH AND ISSACHAR SO BARAK IN THE VALLEY HE WAS SENT AT FEET HIS AMONG [THE] DIVISIONS OF REUBEN [WERE] GREAT RESOLVES OF HEART 15The princes of Issachar were with Deborah, and Issachar was with Barak, rushing into the valley at his heels. 16<TO> WHY? DID YOU SIT BETWEEN THE FIRE-PLACES TO HEAR [THE] WHISTLING OF [THE] FLOCKS TO [THE] DIVISIONS OF REUBEN [WERE] GREAT SEARCHINGS OF HEART 16Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the whistling for the flocks? In the clans of Reuben there was great indecision.
17GILEAD ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN HE DWELT AND DAN <TO> WHY? DID HE SOJOURN SHIPS ASHER HE REMAINED TO [THE] COAST OF [THE] SEAS AND AT LANDING PLACES HIS HE DWELT 17Gilead remained beyond the Jordan. Dan, why did you linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and remained in his harbors.
18ZEBULUN [WAS] A PEOPLE [WHICH] IT DESPISED LIFE ITS TO DIE AND NAPHTALI ON [THE] HEIGHTS OF [THE] FIELD 18Zebulun was a people who risked their lives; Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield.
19THEY CAME KINGS THEY FOUGHT THEN THEY FOUGHT [THE] KINGS OF CANAAN AT TAANACH AT [THE] WATERS OF MEGIDDO PROFIT OF SILVER NOT THEY TOOK 19Kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo, but they took no plunder of silver.
20FROM HEAVEN THEY FOUGHT THE STARS FROM HIGHWAYS THEIR THEY FOUGHT WITH SISERA 20From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21[THE] WADI OF KISHON IT SWEPT AWAY THEM A WADI OF ANCIENT TIMES [THE] WADI OF KISHON YOU WILL MARCH O SELF MY STRENGTH 21The River Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the River Kishon. March on, O my soul, in strength!
22THEN THEY STRUCK [THE] HEELS OF HORSE[S] FROM [THE] GALLOPING [THE] GALLOPING OF MIGHTY [HORSES] HIS 22Then the hooves of horses thundered— the mad galloping of his stallions.
23CURSE MEROZ HE SAYS [THE] ANGEL OF YAHWEH CURSE CONTINUOUSLY <TO CURSE> INHABITANTS ITS FOR NOT THEY CAME TO [THE] HELP OF YAHWEH TO [THE] HELP OF YAHWEH ON THE MIGHTY [ONES] 23‘Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the LORD. ‘Bitterly curse her inhabitants; for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.’
24SHE WILL BE BLESSED MORE THAN WOMEN JAEL [THE] WIFE OF HEBER THE KENITE MORE THAN WOMEN IN THE TENT SHE WILL BE BLESSED 24Most blessed among women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25WATER HE ASKED MILK SHE GAVE IN A BOWL OF NOBLES SHE BROUGHT NEAR CURD<S> 25He asked for water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.
26HAND HER TO THE PEG THEY STRETCHED OUT AND RIGHT [HAND] HER TO A HAMMER OF WORKMEN AND SHE STRUCK SISERA SHE SHATTERED HEAD HIS AND SHE SMASHED AND SHE PIERCED TEMPLE HIS 26She reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and crushed his skull; she shattered and pierced his temple.
27BETWEEN FEET HER HE BOWED DOWN HE FELL HE LAY DOWN BETWEEN FEET HER HE BOWED DOWN HE FELL AT WHERE HE BOWED DOWN THERE HE FELL DESTROYED 27At her feet he collapsed, he fell, there he lay still; at her feet he collapsed, he fell; where he collapsed, there he fell dead.
28THROUGH THE WINDOW SHE LOOKED DOWN AND SHE LAMENTED [THE] MOTHER OF SISERA THROUGH THE WIDOW-LATTICE WHY? HAS IT DELAYED CHARIOT HIS TO COME WHY? HAVE THEY DELAYED [THE] HOOF-BEATS OF CHARIOTS HIS 28Sisera’s mother looked through the window; she peered through the lattice and lamented: ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming? What has delayed the clatter of his chariots?’
29[THE] WISE [WOMEN] OF NOBLE LADIES HER THEY ANSWERED ALSO SHE SHE BROUGHT BACK WORDS HER TO <THE> HERSELF 29Her wisest ladies answer; indeed she keeps telling herself,
30¿ NOT ARE THEY FINDING ARE THEY DIVIDING UP? PLUNDER A WOMB TWO WOMBS FOR [THE] HEAD OF A MAN PLUNDER OF COLORED CLOTH<S> FOR SISERA PLUNDER OF COLORED CLOTH<S> EMBROIDERED MATERIAL COLORED CLOTH EMBROIDERED MATERIAL<S> FOR [THE] NECKS OF PLUNDER 30‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil— a girl or two for each warrior, a plunder of dyed garments for Sisera, the spoil of embroidered garments for the neck of the looter?’
31SO MAY THEY PERISH ALL ENEMIES YOUR O YAHWEH AND [THOSE WHO] LOVE HIM [BE] AS [THE] GOING OUT OF THE SUN IN STRENGTH ITS AND IT WAS AT PEACE THE LAND FORTY YEAR[S] 31So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
