25AND THEY CAPTURED [THE] TWO [THE] COMMANDERS OF MIDIAN <OBJ.> OREB AND <OBJ.> ZEEB AND THEY KILLED <OBJ.> OREB AT [THE] ROCK OF OREB AND <OBJ.> ZEEB THEY KILLED AT [THE] WINEPRESS OF ZEEB AND THEY PURSUED <TO> MIDIAN AND [THE] HEAD OF OREB AND ZEEB THEY BROUGHT TO GIDEON FROM [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN 25They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
1AND THEY SAID TO HIM [THE] MAN OF EPHRAIM WHAT? [IS] THE THING <THE> THIS [WHICH] YOU HAVE DONE TO <THE> US TO NOT TO SUMMON <TO> <THE> US THAT YOU WENT TO FIGHT AGAINST MIDIAN AND THEY QUARRELED! WITH HIM WITH FORCE Gideon Defeats Zebah and Zalmunna 1Then the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, “Why have you done this to us? Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they contended with him violently.
2AND HE SAID TO THEM WHAT? HAVE I DONE NOW LIKE <THE> YOU ¿ NOT GOOD [ARE] [THE] GLEANINGS OF EPHRAIM MORE THAN [THE] GRAPE HARVEST OF ABIEZER 2But Gideon answered them, “Now what have I accomplished compared to you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer?
3IN HAND YOUR HE HAS GIVEN GOD <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDERS OF MIDIAN <OBJ.> OREB AND <OBJ.> ZEEB AND WHAT? HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO DO LIKE <THE> YOU THEN IT RELAXED SPIRIT THEIR FROM ON <THE> HIM WHEN SAID HE THE WORD <THE> THIS 3God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian, into your hand. What was I able to do compared to you?” When he had said this, their anger*NoteCloseOr their spirit against him subsided.
4AND HE CAME GIDEON THE JORDAN TOWARDS [WAS] PASSING OVER HE AND THREE HUNDRED<S> THE MAN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM [WERE] EXHAUSTED AND PURSUING 4Then Gideon and his three hundred men came to the Jordan and crossed it, exhausted yet still in pursuit.
5AND HE SAID TO [THE] PEOPLE OF SUCCOTH GIVE PLEASE ROUND LOAVES OF BREAD TO THE PEOPLE WHICH [IS] AT FEET MY FOR [ARE] EXHAUSTED THEY AND I [AM] PURSUING AFTER ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA [THE] KINGS OF MIDIAN 5So Gideon said to the men of Succoth, “Please give my troops some bread, for they are exhausted, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
6AND HE SAID [THE] OFFICIALS OF SUCCOTH ¿ [IS] [THE] HAND OF ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA NOW IN HAND YOUR THAT WE WILL GIVE TO ARMY YOUR BREAD 6But the leaders of Succoth asked, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
7AND HE SAID GIDEON <TO> THEREFORE WHEN GIVES YAHWEH <OBJ.> ZEBAH AND <OBJ.> ZALMUNNA IN HAND MY AND I WILL THRESH <OBJ.> FLESH YOUR WITH <THE> THORNS OF THE WILDERNESS AND WITH <THE> BRIERS 7“Very well,” Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness
8AND HE WENT UP FROM THERE PENUEL AND HE SPOKE TO THEM LIKE THIS AND THEY ANSWERED <OBJ.> HIM [THE] MEN OF PENUEL JUST AS THEY HAD ANSWERED [THE] MEN OF SUCCOTH 8From there he went up to Penuel*NoteClosePenuel is a variant of Peniel; also in verses 9 and 17; see Genesis 32:30. and asked the same from them, but the men of Penuel gave the same response as the men of Succoth.
9AND HE SAID ALSO TO [THE] MEN OF PENUEL <TO> SAYING WHEN RETURN I IN PEACE I WILL TEAR DOWN <OBJ.> THE TOWER <THE> THIS 9So Gideon told the men of Penuel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower!”
10AND ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA [WERE] IN <THE> KARKOR AND ARMIES THEIR [WERE] WITH THEM ABOUT FIF- TEEN THOUSAND ALL THOSE [WHO] REMAINED OF ALL [THE] ARMY OF [THE] PEOPLE OF [THE] EAST AND THOSE [WHO] FELL [WERE] ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND MAN [WHO] DREW [THE] SWORD 10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of about fifteen thousand men— all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had already fallen.
11AND HE WENT UP GIDEON [THE] WAY OF THOSE [WHO] DWELL IN <THE> TENTS FROM [THE] EAST OF NOBAH AND JOGBEHAH AND HE ATTACKED <OBJ.> THE ARMY AND THE ARMY IT WAS SECURITY 11And Gideon went up by way of the caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he attacked their army, taking them by surprise.
12AND THEY FLED ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA AND HE PURSUED AFTER THEM AND HE CAPTURED <OBJ.> [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF MIDIAN <OBJ.> ZEBAH AND <OBJ.> ZALMUNNA AND ALL THE ARMY HE ROUTED 12When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, Gideon pursued and captured these two kings of Midian routing their entire army.
13AND HE RETURNED GIDEON [THE] SON OF JOASH FROM THE BATTLE FROM TO [THE] ASCENT OF <THE> HERES 13After this, Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle along the Ascent of Heres.
14AND HE CAPTURED A YOUNG MAN ONE OF [THE] MEN OF SUCCOTH AND HE ENQUIRED OF HIM AND HE WROTE DOWN TO HIM <OBJ.> [THE] OFFICIALS OF SUCCOTH AND <OBJ.> ELDERS ITS SEVENTY AND SEVEN MAN 14There he captured a young man of Succoth and interrogated him. The young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Succoth.
15AND HE CAME TO [THE] MEN OF SUCCOTH AND HE SAID HERE! ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA WHOM YOU TAUNTED <OBJ.> ME <TO> SAYING ¿ [IS] [THE] HAND OF ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA NOW IN HAND YOUR THAT WE WILL GIVE TO MEN YOUR <THE> WEARY BREAD 15And Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your weary men?’”
16AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] ELDERS OF THE CITY AND <OBJ.> [THE] THORNS OF THE WILDERNESS AND <OBJ.> THE BRIERS AND HE TAUGHT WITH <THE> THEM <OBJ.> [THE] MEN OF SUCCOTH 16Then he took the elders of the city, and using the thorns and briers of the wilderness he disciplined the men of Succoth.
17AND <OBJ.> [THE] TOWER OF PENUEL HE TORE DOWN AND HE KILLED <OBJ.> [THE] MEN OF THE CITY 17He also pulled down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.
18AND HE SAID TO ZEBAH AND TO ZALMUNNA WHERE? [ARE] THE MEN WHOM YOU KILLED AT TABOR AND THEY SAID LIKE YOU LIKE THEM ONE [WAS] LIKE [THE] APPEARANCE OF [THE] SONS OF THE KING 18Next, Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?” “Men like you,” they answered, “each one resembling the son of a king.”
19AND HE SAID [WERE] BROTHERS MY [THE] SONS OF MOTHER MY THEY [BY] [THE] LIFE OF YAHWEH IF YOU HAD LET LIVE <OBJ.> THEM NOT I KILLED <OBJ.> YOU 19“They were my brothers,” Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”
20AND HE SAID TO JETHER FIRSTBORN HIS ARISE KILL <OBJ.> THEM AND NOT HE DREW THE YOUNG MAN SWORD HIS FOR HE WAS AFRAID FOR STILL HE [WAS] A YOUNG MAN 20So he said to Jether, his firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
21AND HE SAID ZEBAH AND ZALMUNNA ARISE YOU AND FALL ON <THE> US FOR [IS] LIKE THE MAN STRENGTH HIS AND HE AROSE GIDEON AND HE KILLED <OBJ.> ZEBAH AND <OBJ.> ZALMUNNA AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> THE ORNAMENTS WHICH [WERE] ON [THE] NECKS OF CAMELS THEIR 21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.
22AND THEY SAID [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL TO GIDEON RULE OVER <THE> US BOTH YOU AS WELL AS SON YOUR AS WELL AS [THE] SON OF SON YOUR FOR YOU HAVE DELIVERED US FROM [THE] HAND OF MIDIAN Gideon’s Ephod 22Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us— you and your son and grandson for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23AND HE SAID TO THEM GIDEON NOT I WILL RULE I OVER <THE> YOU AND NOT HE WILL RULE SON MY OVER <THE> YOU YAHWEH HE WILL RULE OVER <THE> YOU 23But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD shall rule over you.”
24AND HE SAID TO THEM GIDEON LET ME ASK FROM <THE> YOU A PETITION AND GIVE TO <THE> ME EVERYONE <THE> EARRING OF PLUNDER HIS FOR EARRINGS OF GOLD [BELONGED] TO <THE> THEM FOR [WERE] ISHMAELITES THEY 24Then he added “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an earring from his plunder.” (For the enemies had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.)
25AND THEY SAID CERTAINLY <TO GIVE> WE WILL GIVE [THEM] AND THEY SPREAD OUT <OBJ.> THE GARMENT AND THEY THREW THERE TOWARDS EVERYONE <THE> EARRING OF PLUNDER HIS 25“We will give them gladly they replied. So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an earring from his plunder onto it.
26AND IT WAS [THE] WEIGHT OF [THE] EARRINGS OF <THE> GOLD WHICH HE ASKED FOR ONE THOUSAND AND SEVEN HUNDRED<S> GOLD <TO> APART FROM THE ORNAMENTS AND THE PENDANTS AND [THE] GARMENTS OF <THE> PURPLE THAT [WERE] ON [THE] KINGS OF MIDIAN AND <TO> APART FROM THE NECKLACES WHICH [WERE] ON [THE] NECKS OF CAMELS THEIR 26The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels,*NoteClose1,700 shekels is approximately 42.7 pounds or 19.4 kilograms. in addition to the crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of Midian, and the chains from the necks of their camels.
27AND HE MADE <OBJ.> IT GIDEON INTO AN EPHOD AND HE PLACED <OBJ.> IT IN CITY HIS IN OPHRAH AND THEY ACTED AS PROSTITUTES ALL ISRAEL AFTER IT THERE AND IT BECAME FOR GIDEON AND FOR HOUSEHOLD HIS <INTO> A SNARE 27From all this Gideon made an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.
28AND IT WAS SUBDUED MIDIAN <TO> BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND NOT THEY REPEATED TO LIFT UP HEAD THEIR AND IT WAS AT PEACE THE LAND FORTY YEAR[S] IN [THE] DAYS OF GIDEON Forty Years of Peace 28In this way Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. So the land had rest for forty years in the days of Gideon,
29AND HE WENT JERUB-BAAL [THE] SON OF JOASH AND HE DWELT IN OWN HOUSE HIS 29and he Jerubbaal*NoteCloseJerubbaal is another name for Gideon and probably means let Baal contend; also in verse 35; see Judges 6:32. son of Joash— returned home and settled down.
30AND TO GIDEON THEY BELONGED SEVENTY SONS [WHO] CAME OUT OF THIGH HIS FOR WIVES MANY THEY BELONGED TO <THE> HIM 30Gideon had seventy sons of his own,*NoteCloseHebrew who came from his own loins since he had many wives.
31AND CONCUBINE HIS WHO [WAS] IN SHECHEM SHE BORE TO <THE> HIM ALSO SHE A SON AND HE MADE <OBJ.> NAME HIS ABIMELECH 31His concubine, who dwelt in Shechem, also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.
32AND HE DIED GIDEON [THE] SON OF JOASH IN OLD AGE GOOD AND HE WAS BURIED IN [THE] TOMB OF JOASH FATHER HIS IN OPHRAH OF [THE] ABI- <THE> -EZRITE[S] Gideon’s Death 32Later, Gideon son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33AND IT WAS JUST WHEN HE HAD DIED GIDEON AND THEY TURNED BACK [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY ACTED AS PROSTITUTES AFTER THE BAALS AND THEY MADE FOR <THE> THEMSELVES BAAL- BERITH INTO GOD 33And as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up Baal-berith as their god.
34AND NOT THEY REMEMBERED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD THEIR WHO DELIVERED <OBJ.> THEM FROM [THE] HAND OF ALL ENEMIES THEIR FROM ROUND ABOUT 34The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
35AND NOT THEY DID LOYALTY WITH [THE] HOUSE OF JERUB-BAAL GIDEON ACCORDING TO ALL THE GOOD WHICH HE HAD DONE WITH ISRAEL 35They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) for all the good things he had done for Israel.
