1AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF SINAI IN [THE] TENT OF MEETING ON [DAY] ONE OF THE MONTH <THE> SECOND IN THE YEAR <THE> SECOND OF GOING OUT THEIR FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT <TO> SAYING The First Census of Israel (Numbers 26:1–4) 1On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:
2LIFT UP <OBJ.> [THE] HEAD OF ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO CLANS THEIR TO [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS THEIR BY [THE] NUMBER OF NAMES OF EVERY MALE TO HEADS THEIR 2“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
3FROM A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AND UP -WARDS EVERY [ONE WHO] GOES FORTH WARFARE IN ISRAEL YOU WILL ENROLL <OBJ.> THEM TO MILITARY GROUPS THEIR YOU AND AARON 3You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions— everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.
4AND WITH YOU THEY WILL BE A MAN A MAN TO THE TRIBE A MAN [IS THE] HEAD OF [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS HIS HE 4And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.
5AND THESE [ARE] [THE] NAMES OF THE MEN WHO THEY WILL STAND WITH YOU FOR REUBEN ELIZUR [THE] SON OF SHEDEUR The Leaders of the Tribes 5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
10FOR [THE] SONS OF JOSEPH FOR EPHRAIM ELISHAMA [THE] SON OF AMMIHUD FOR MANASSEH GAMALIEL [THE] SON OF PEDAHZUR 10from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
16THESE [WERE THOSE] CALLED [OF] THE CONGREGATION [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] TRIBES OF ANCESTORS THEIR [WERE] [THE] HEADS OF [THE] FAMILIES OF ISRAEL THEY 16These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.
17AND HE TOOK MOSES AND AARON <OBJ.> THE MEN <THE> THESE WHO THEY HAD BEEN DESIGNATED BY NAMES The Number of Every Tribe 17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,
18AND <OBJ.> ALL THE CONGREGATION THEY SUMMONED ON [DAY] ONE OF THE MONTH <THE> SECOND AND THEY RECORDED THEIR ANCESTRY ON CLANS THEIR TO [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS THEIR BY [THE] NUMBER OF NAMES FROM A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AND UP -WARDS TO HEADS THEIR 18and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,
19JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES AND HE ENROLLED THEM IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF SINAI 19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:

43ENROLLED [MEN] THEIR OF [THE] TRIBE OF NAPHTALI [WERE] THREE AND FIFTY THOUSAND AND FOUR HUNDRED<S> 43those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.
44THESE [WERE] THE ENROLLED [MEN] WHOM HE ENROLLED MOSES AND AARON AND [THE] LEADERS OF ISRAEL TWO [PLUS] TEN MAN A MAN ONE FOR [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS HIS THEY WERE 44These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
45AND THEY WERE ALL [THOSE] ENROLLED OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO [THE] HOUSE OF ANCESTORS THEIR FROM A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AND UP -WARDS EVERY [ONE WHO] GOES FORTH WARFARE IN ISRAEL 45So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
46AND THEY WERE ALL THOSE ENROLLED SIX HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND AND THREE THOUSAND<S> AND FIVE HUNDRED<S> AND FIFTY 46And all those counted totaled 603,550.
47AND THE LEVITES TO [THE] TRIBE OF ANCESTORS THEIR NOT THEY WERE ENROLLED IN MIDST OF THEM The Exemption of the Levites 47The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.
49ONLY <OBJ.> [THE] TRIBE OF LEVI NOT YOU WILL ENROLL AND <OBJ.> HEAD THEIR NOT YOU WILL LIFT UP IN AMONG [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 49Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.
50AND YOU APPOINT <OBJ.> THE LEVITES OVER [THE] TABERNACLE OF THE TESTIMONY AND OVER ALL ARTICLES ITS AND OVER ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> IT THEY THEY WILL CARRY <OBJ.> THE TABERNACLE AND <OBJ.> ALL ARTICLES ITS AND THEY THEY WILL SERVE IT AND AROUND <TO> THE TABERNACLE THEY WILL ENCAMP 50Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.
51AND WHEN SETS OUT THE TABERNACLE THEY WILL TAKE DOWN <OBJ.> IT THE LEVITES AND WHEN ENCAMPS THE TABERNACLE THEY WILL RAISE UP <OBJ.> IT THE LEVITES AND THE STRANGER <THE> APPROACHING HE WILL BE PUT TO DEATH 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.
52AND THEY WILL ENCAMP [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL EVERYONE AT CAMP HIS AND EVERYONE AT STANDARD HIS TO MILITARY GROUPS THEIR 52The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.
53AND THE LEVITES THEY WILL ENCAMP AROUND <TO> [THE] TABERNACLE OF THE TESTIMONY AND NOT IT WILL BE WRATH TOWARDS [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE ISRAEL AND THEY WILL KEEP THE LEVITES <OBJ.> [THE] DUTY OF [THE] TABERNACLE OF THE TESTIMONY 53But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”
54AND THEY DID [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES SO THEY DID 54Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
