2EVERY WAY OF A PERSON [IS] UPRIGHT IN OWN EYES HIS AND [IS] WEIGHING HEARTS YAHWEH 2All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart.
3TO DO RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE [IS] CHOSEN BY YAHWEH MORE THAN SACRIFICE 3To do righteousness and justice is more desirable to the LORD than sacrifice.
4HAUGHTINESS OF EYES AND A [PERSON] ARROGANT OF HEART [THE] LAMP OF WICKED [PEOPLE] [IS] SIN 4Haughty eyes and a proud heart— the guides of the wicked— are sin.
5[THE] PLANS OF A DILIGENT [PERSON] ONLY TO ADVANTAGE AND EVERY HASTY [PERSON] ONLY TO POVERTY 5The plans of the diligent bring plenty, as surely as haste leads to poverty.
6[THE] ACQUISITION OF TREASURES BY A TONGUE OF FALSEHOOD [IS] A BREATH DRIVEN ABOUT SEEKERS OF DEATH 6Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist, a deadly pursuit.
7[THE] VIOLENCE OF WICKED [PEOPLE] IT WILL DRAG AWAY THEM FOR THEY REFUSE TO DO JUSTICE 7The violence of the wicked will sweep them away because they refuse to do what is just.
8[IS] CROOKED [THE] WAY OF A PERSON GUILTY AND A PURE [PERSON] [IS] UPRIGHT WORK HIS 8The way of a guilty man is crooked, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9[IS] GOOD TO DWELL ON A CORNER OF A ROOF MORE THAN A WOMAN OF CONTENTIONS AND A HOUSE OF ASSOCIATION 9Better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
10[THE] APPETITE OF A WICKED [PERSON] IT CRAVES EVIL NOT HE IS SHOWN FAVOR IN VIEW HIS NEIGHBOR HIS 10The soul of the wicked man craves evil; his neighbor finds no favor in his eyes.
11WHEN PUNISH A MOCKER HE BECOMES WISE A NAIVE PERSON AND WHEN INSTRUCT <TO> A WISE [PERSON] HE RECEIVES KNOWLEDGE 11When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; and when a wise man is instructed, he acquires knowledge.
12[IS] GIVING ATTENTION [THE] RIGHTEOUS [ONE] TO [THE] HOUSE OF A WICKED [PERSON] [HE IS] SUBVERTING WICKED [PEOPLE] TO <THE> CALAMITY 12The Righteous One*NoteCloseOr The righteous one considers the house of the wicked and brings the wicked to ruin.
13[ONE WHO] SHUTS EAR HIS FROM [THE] CRY OF [THE] POOR ALSO HE HE WILL CALL OUT AND NOT HE WILL BE ANSWERED 13Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too shall cry out and receive no answer.
14A GIFT IN <THE> SECRECY IT SUBDUES ANGER AND A BRIBE IN THE BOSOM RAGE STRONG 14A gift in secret soothes anger, and a covert bribe*NoteCloseHebrew a bribe in the bosom pacifies great wrath.
15[IS] A JOY TO THE RIGHTEOUS [PERSON] TO DO JUSTICE AND TERROR TO [THOSE WHO] DO <OF> WICKEDNESS 15Justice executed is a joy to the righteous, but a terror to the workers of iniquity.
16A PERSON [WHO] WANDERS FROM [THE] WAY OF INSIGHT IN [THE] ASSEMBLY OF [THE] SHADES HE WILL REST 16The man who strays from the path of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead.
17[WILL BE] A PERSON OF POVERTY [ONE WHO] LOVES PLEASURE [ONE WHO] LOVES WINE AND OIL NOT HE WILL GAIN RICHES 17He who loves pleasure will become poor; the one who loves wine and oil will never be rich.
18[IS] A RANSOM FOR THE RIGHTEOUS [PERSON] A WICKED [PERSON] AND IN PLACE OF UPRIGHT [PEOPLE] [ONE WHO] ACTS TREACHEROUSLY 18The wicked become a ransom for the righteous, and the faithless for the upright.
19[IS] GOOD TO DWELL IN A LAND OF WILDERNESS MORE THAN A WOMAN OF CONTENTIONS AND ANGER 19Better to live in the desert than with a contentious and ill-tempered wife.
20TREASURE DESIRABLE AND OIL [ARE] IN [THE] HABITATION OF A WISE [PERSON] AND A FOOL A PERSON HE SWALLOWS UP IT 20Precious treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man consumes them.
21[ONE WHO] PURSUES RIGHTEOUSNESS AND LOYALTY HE FINDS LIFE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HONOR 21He who pursues righteousness and loving devotion finds life, righteousness, and honor.
22A CITY OF WARRIORS HE GOES UP A WISE [PERSON] AND HE BROUGHT DOWN [THE] STRENGTH OF TRUST ITS 22A wise man scales the city of the mighty and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust.
23[ONE WHO] GUARDS MOUTH HIS AND TONGUE HIS [IS] KEEPING FROM TROUBLES SELF HIS 23He who guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from distress.
24PROUD ARROGANT [IS] MOCKER NAME HIS [ONE WHO] ACTS IN [THE] OVERFLOWING OF PRIDE 24Mocker is the name of the proud and arrogant man— of him who acts with excessive pride.
25[THE] DESIRE OF A SLUGGARD IT KILLS HIM FOR THEY REFUSE HANDS HIS TO WORK 25The craving of the slacker kills him because his hands refuse to work.
26ALL THE DAY HE CRAVES A CRAVING AND A RIGHTEOUS [PERSON] HE GIVES AND NOT HE KEEPS BACK 26All day long he covets more, but the righteous give without restraint.
27[THE] SACRIFICE OF WICKED [PEOPLE] [IS] AN ABOMINATION INDEED? IF IN WICKEDNESS HE BRINGS IT 27The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable— how much more so when brought with ill intent!
28A WITNESS OF LIES HE WILL PERISH AND A PERSON [WHO] LISTENS TO PERPETUITY HE WILL SPEAK 28A lying witness will perish, but the man who listens to truth will speak forever.
29HE MAKES STRONG A PERSON WICKED WITH FACE HIS AND AN UPRIGHT [PERSON] HE HE CONSIDERS WAY HIS 29A wicked man hardens his face,*NoteCloseOr puts up a bold front but the upright man makes his way sure.
30THERE NOT [IS] WISDOM AND THERE NOT [IS] UNDERSTANDING AND THERE NOT [IS] COUNSEL TO BEFORE YAHWEH 30There is no wisdom, no understanding, no counsel that can prevail against the LORD.
31A HORSE [IS] PREPARED FOR A DAY OF BATTLE AND [BELONGS] TO YAHWEH THE VICTORY 31A horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory is of the LORD.
