1<TO> WHY? O YAHWEH DO YOU STAND AT A DISTANCE DO YOU HIDE? TO TIMES OF TROUBLE The Perils of the Pilgrim 1Why, O LORD, do You stand far off? Why do You hide in times of trouble?
2IN [THE] PRIDE OF [THE] WICKED HE HOTLY PURSUES [THE] AFFLICTED THEY ARE CAUGHT BY SCHEMES WHICH THEY HAVE PLANNED 2In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught in the schemes they devise.
3FOR HE BOASTS A WICKED [PERSON] ON [THE] DESIRE OF SELF HIS AND [ONE] GREEDY FOR UNJUST GAIN HE BLESSES HE SPURNS YAHWEH 3For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4A WICKED [PERSON] ACCORDING TO [THE] HAUGHTINESS OF NOSE HIS NOT HE SEEKS [ARE] THERE NOT [IS] A GOD ALL THOUGHTS HIS 4In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God.
5THEY ENDURE WAYS HIS AT EVERY TIME [ARE] HEIGHT JUDGMENTS YOUR FROM BEFORE HIM ALL OPPOSERS HIS HE BREATHES OUT AT THEM 5He is secure in his ways at all times; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes.
6HE SAYS IN HEART HIS NOT I WILL BE SHAKEN TO A GENERATION AND A GENERATION WHO NOT IN DISTRESS 6He says to himself, “I will not be moved; from age to age I am free of distress.”
7A CURSE MOUTH HIS IT IS FULL AND DECEIT<S> AND OPPRESSION [ARE] UNDER TONGUE HIS MISCHIEF AND WICKEDNESS 7His mouth is full of cursing, deceit,*NoteCloseLXX bitterness; cited in Romans 3:14 and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue.
8HE SITS IN AN AMBUSH OF VILLAGES IN <THE> HIDING PLACES HE KILLS [THE] INNOCENT EYES HIS FOR AN UNFORTUNATE PERSON THEY LIE HIDDEN 8He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless.
9HE LIES IN WAIT IN <THE> HIDING PLACE LIKE A LION IN LAIR ITS HE LIES IN WAIT TO SEIZE [THE] AFFLICTED HE SEIZES [THE] AFFLICTED WHEN DRAGS [HIM] AWAY HE IN NET HIS 9He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net.
10HE IS CRUSHED HE IS BOWED DOWN AND HE FALLS AMONG MIGHTY [ONES] HIS AN ARMY OF DISHEARTENED [PEOPLE] 10They are crushed and beaten down;*NoteCloseOr He crouches and lies low the helpless fall prey to his strength.
11HE SAYS IN HEART HIS HE HAS FORGOTTEN GOD HE HAS HIDDEN FACE HIS NOT HE SEES TO PERPETUITY 11He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.”
12ARISE! O YAHWEH O GOD LIFT UP HAND YOUR MAY NOT YOU FORGET HUMBLE [PEOPLE] 12Arise, O LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless.
13CONCERNING WHAT? HAS HE SPURNED [THE] WICKED GOD HAS HE SAID? IN HEART HIS NOT YOU WILL SEEK 13Why has the wicked man renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call me to account.”
14YOU HAVE SEEN THAT YOU MISCHIEF AND VEXATION YOU PAY ATTENTION TO PUT IN HAND YOUR ON YOU HE ABANDONS AN UNFORTUNATE PERSON [THE] FATHERLESS YOU YOU ARE A HELPER 14But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.
15BREAK [THE] ARM OF [THE] WICKED AND [THE] EVIL YOU WILL SEEK WICKEDNESS HIS NOT YOU WILL FIND 15Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found.
16YAHWEH [IS] KING FOREVER AND EVER THEY HAVE PERISHED [THE] NATIONS FROM LAND HIS 16The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land.
17[THE] DESIRE OF HUMBLE [PEOPLE] YOU HAVE HEARD O YAHWEH YOU ESTABLISH HEART THEIR YOU CAUSE TO PAY ATTENTION EAR YOUR 17You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear,
18TO VINDICATE [THE] FATHERLESS AND [THE] OPPRESSED NOT HE WILL REPEAT AGAIN TO TERRIFY HUMANKIND FROM THE EARTH 18to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more.
