21AS FOR HOWEVER <THE> ISRAEL HE SAYS: ALL THE DAY I HAVE STRETCHED OUT THE HANDS OF MINE TO A PEOPLE DISOBEYING AND CONTRADICTING. 21But as for Israel he says: “All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 65:2 (see also LXX)
1I ASK THEN; NOT DID REJECT <THE> GOD THE PEOPLE OF HIM? NEVER WOULD IT BE! ALSO FOR I MYSELF AN ISRAELITE AM, OF [THE] SEED OF ABRAHAM, OF [THE] TRIBE OF BENJAMIN. A Remnant Chosen by Grace 1I ask then, did God reject His people? Certainly not! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
2NOT DID REJECT <THE> GOD THE PEOPLE OF HIM WHOM HE FOREKNEW. OR NOT KNOW YOU IN ELIJAH WHAT SAYS THE SCRIPTURE, HOW HE PLEADS <THE> WITH GOD AGAINST <THE> ISRAEL SAYING 2God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
3LORD, THE PROPHETS OF YOU THEY HAVE KILLED, AND THE ALTARS OF YOU THEY HAVE TORN DOWN, AND I MYSELF WERE LEFT ALONE, AND THEY ARE SEEKING THE LIFE OF ME. 3“Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well*NoteClose1 Kings 19:10, 14?
4BUT WHAT [WAS] SPOKEN TO HIM THE DIVINE ANSWER? I HAVE LEFT TO MYSELF SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO NOT BOWED [THE] KNEE <THE> TO BAAL. 4And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”*NoteClose1 Kings 19:18
5THUS THEN ALSO IN THE PRESENT TIME A REMNANT ACCORDING TO [THE] ELECTION OF GRACE THERE HAS BEEN. 5In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
6IF NOW BY GRACE NO LONGER FROM WORKS, OTHERWISE <THE> GRACE NO LONGER WOULD BE GRACE IF NOW FROM WORKS NO LONGER IS GRACE SINCE THE WORK NO LONGER IS WORK. 6And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.*NoteCloseBYZ and TR include But if it is by works, then it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.
7WHAT THEN? WHAT IS SEEKING ISRAEL, THIS NOT IT HAS OBTAINED, <THE> BUT THE ELECT OBTAINED [IT]; THE NOW REST WERE HARDENED 7What then? What Israel was seeking it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
8EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: GAVE TO THEM <THE> GOD A SPIRIT OF STUPOR, EYES <THE> NOT TO SEE AND EARS <THE> NOT TO HEAR UNTO THE TODAY DAY. 8as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day*NoteCloseSee Deuteronomy 29:4 and Isaiah 29:10.
9AND DAVID SAYS: SHOULD BE THE TABLE OF THEM FOR A SNARE AND FOR A TRAP AND FOR A STUMBLING BLOCK AND FOR A RETRIBUTION TO THEM; 9And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10SHOULD BE DARKENED THE EYES OF THEM <THE> NOT TO SEE, AND THE BACKS OF THEM FOR ALL [TIMES] DO BEND OVER. 10May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”*NoteClosePsalm 69:22–23 (see also LXX)
11I SAY THEN, SURELY NOT THEY DID STUMBLE SO THAT THEY MAY FALL? NEVER WOULD IT BE! BUT IN THE OF THEM TRESPASS <THE> [IS] SALVATION TO THE GENTILES SO AS <THE> TO PROVOKE TO JEALOUSY THEM. The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery?*NoteCloseOr did they stumble so as to lose their share? Literally did they stumble that they might fall? Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.
12IF HOWEVER THE TRESPASS OF THEM [IS] RICHES OF [THE] WORLD AND THE FAILURE OF THEM [IS THE] RICHES OF [THE] GENTILES, HOW MUCH MORE THE FULLNESS OF THEM? 12But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
13TO YOU NOW I AM SPEAKING <THE> GENTILES; UPON AS MUCH AS INDEED THEREFORE AM I MYSELF OF [THE] GENTILES APOSTLE, THE MINISTRY OF MINE I MAGNIFY, 13I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
14IF AT ALL I WILL PROVOKE TO JEALOUSY OF ME THE FLESH AND WILL SAVE SOME OF THEM. 14in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.
15IF FOR THE REJECTION OF THEM [IS THE] RECONCILIATION OF [THE] WORLD, WHAT [WILL BE] THE ACCEPTANCE ONLY EXCEPT LIFE OUT FROM [THE] DEAD? 15For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
16IF NOW THE FIRSTFRUIT [IS] HOLY, ALSO THE LUMP; AND IF THE ROOT [IS] HOLY, ALSO THE BRANCHES. 16If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
17IF HOWEVER SOME OF THE BRANCHES WERE BROKEN OFF, YOU YOURSELF NOW A WILD OLIVE TREE BEING YOU WERE GRAFTED IN AMONG THEM AND A FELLOW-PARTAKER OF THE ROOT AND OF THE FATNESS OF THE OLIVE TREE YOU HAVE BECOME, 17Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root,
18NOT DO BOAST OVER THE BRANCHES; IF NOW YOU BOAST AGAINST [THEM], NOT YOU YOURSELF THE ROOT SUPPORT BUT THE ROOT YOU. 18do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
19YOU WILL SAY THEN; WERE BROKEN OFF <THE> BRANCHES THAT I MYSELF MAY BE GRAFTED IN. 19You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in. ”
20RIGHTLY SO; BY THE UNBELIEF THEY WERE BROKEN OFF, YOU YOURSELF HOWEVER <THE> BY FAITH HAVE STOOD. NOT HIGH DO BE MINDED BUT DO BE AFRAID; 20That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
21IF FOR <THE> GOD THE ACCORDING TO NATURE BRANCHES NOT SPARED, SURELY PERHAPS NEITHER YOU WILL HE SPARE. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not*NoteCloseOr He will perhaps not; SBL, NE, and WH He will not spare you either.
22BEHOLD THEREFORE [THE] KINDNESS AND SEVERITY OF GOD; UPON INDEED THOSE HAVING FALLEN SEVERITY, TOWARD HOWEVER YOU KINDNESS OF GOD, IF YOU SHALL CONTINUE IN THE KINDNESS; OTHERWISE ALSO YOU YOURSELF WILL BE CUT OFF. 22Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
23AND THEY NOW ONLY UNLESS THEY SHALL CONTINUE <THE> IN UNBELIEF, [THEN] THEY WILL BE GRAFTED IN; ABLE FOR IS <THE> GOD AGAIN TO GRAFT IN THEM; 23And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
24IF FOR YOU YOURSELF OUT OF THE ACCORDING TO NATURE WERE CUT OFF A WILD OLIVE TREE AND CONTRARY TO NATURE WERE GRAFTED INTO A CULTIVATED OLIVE TREE, HOW MUCH MORE THESE WHO ACCORDING TO NATURE [ARE] WILL BE GRAFTED INTO THEIR OWN OLIVE TREE? 24For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
25NOT FOR I WANT YOU TO BE IGNORANT, BROTHERS, OF THE MYSTERY THIS, THAT NOT YOU MAY BE BESIDE YOURSELVES WISE, THAT A HARDENING IN PART <THE> TO ISRAEL HAS HAPPENED UNTIL THAT THE FULLNESS OF THE GENTILES MAY COME IN, All Israel Will Be Saved 25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited A hardening in part has come to Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
26AND SO ALL ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: WILL COME OUT OF ZION THE [ONE] DELIVERING, AND HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB; 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
27AND THIS [IS] TO THEM THE FROM ME COVENANT, WHEN I MAY TAKE AWAY THE SINS OF THEM. 27And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 27:9 and Isaiah 59:20–21; see also LXX
28AS REGARDS INDEED THE GOSPEL [THEY ARE] ENEMIES ON ACCOUNT OF YOU AS REGARDS HOWEVER THE ELECTION BELOVED ON ACCOUNT OF THE PATRIARCHS; 28Regarding the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but regarding election, they are loved on account of the patriarchs.
29IRREVOCABLE FOR [ARE] THE GIFTS AND THE CALLING <THE> OF GOD. 29For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
30JUST AS FOR AND YOU YOURSELVES ONCE WERE DISOBEDIENT <THE> TO GOD NOW HOWEVER WERE SHOWN MERCY TO THEM THROUGH THEIR DISOBEDIENCE, 30Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
31SO ALSO THESE NOW WERE DISOBEDIENT <THE> TO YOUR MERCY SO THAT ALSO THEY THEMSELVES NOW MAY HAVE MERCY SHOWN [THEM]. 31so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.*NoteCloseLiterally may now receive mercy through your mercy; BYZ and TR may receive mercy through your mercy
32HAS BOUND UP FOR <THE> GOD <THE> ALL IN DISOBEDIENCE THAT <THE> ALL HE MAY SHOW MERCY TO. 32For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
33O [THE] DEPTH OF RICHES BOTH OF WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD! HOW UNSEARCHABLE THE JUDGMENTS OF HIM AND UNTRACEABLE THE WAYS OF HIM! A Hymn of Praise (Isaiah 40:9–31) 33O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!
34WHO FOR HAS KNOWN [THE] MIND OF [THE] LORD? OR WHO COUNSELOR OF HIM HAS BEEN? 34“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?”*NoteCloseIsaiah 40:13 (see also LXX)
35OR WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM, AND IT WILL BE RECOMPENSED TO HIM? 35“Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”*NoteCloseJob 41:11
36FOR FROM HIM AND THROUGH HIM AND UNTO HIM <THE> [ARE] ALL THINGS; TO HIM [BE] THE GLORY TO THE AGES! AMEN. 36For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
