King David appointed them over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king.

There were 24,000 men in each division:

3ONE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF PEREZ THE CHIEF OF ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES FOR THE MONTH <THE> FIRST 3He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army commanders for the first month.
4AND [WAS] OVER [THE] DIVISION OF THE MONTH <THE> SECOND DODAI THE AHOHITE AND DIVISION HIS AND MIKLOTH [WAS] THE LEADER AND [WERE] WITH DIVISION HIS TWENTY AND FOUR THOUSAND 4Dodai*NoteCloseDodai is a variant of Dodo; see 2 Samuel 23:9. the Ahohite was in charge of the division for the second month, and Mikloth was the leader. There were 24,000 men in his division.
5[WAS] [THE] COMMANDER OF THE ARMY <THE> THIRD FOR THE MONTH <THE> THIRD BENAIAH [THE] SON OF JEHOIADA THE PRIEST CHIEF AND [WERE] WITH DIVISION HIS TWENTY AND FOUR THOUSAND 5The third army commander, as chief for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest. There were 24,000 men in his division.
6THAT BENAIAH [WAS] [THE] MIGHTY [MAN] OF THE THIRTY AND [WAS] OVER THE THIRTY AND DIVISION HIS AMMIZABAD SON HIS 6This Benaiah was mighty among the Thirty and was over the Thirty, and his son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.
7[WAS] THE FOURTH FOR THE MONTH <THE> FOURTH ASAH- -EL [THE] BROTHER OF JOAB AND ZEBADIAH SON HIS [WAS] AFTER HIM AND [WERE] WITH DIVISION HIS TWENTY AND FOUR THOUSAND 7The fourth, for the fourth month, was Joab’s brother Asahel, and his son Zebadiah was commander after him. There were 24,000 men in his division.

There were 24,000 men in his division.

10[WAS] THE SEVENTH FOR THE MONTH <THE> SEVENTH HELEZ THE PELONITE ONE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF EPHRAIM AND [WERE] WITH DIVISION HIS TWENTY AND FOUR THOUSAND 10The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
11[WAS] THE EIGHTH FOR THE MONTH <THE> EIGHTH SIBBECAI THE HUSHATHITE OF THE ZERAHITE[S] AND [WERE] WITH DIVISION HIS TWENTY AND FOUR THOUSAND 11The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbecai the Hushathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.

20FOR [THE] SONS OF EPHRAIM HOSHEA [THE] SON OF AZAZIAH FOR [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH JOEL [THE] SON OF PEDAIAH 20over the Ephraimites was Hoshea son of Azaziah; over one of the half-tribes of Manasseh was Joel son of Pedaiah;
21FOR [THE] HALF OF <THE> MANASSEH GILEAD TOWARDS IDDO [THE] SON OF ZECHARIAH FOR BENJAMIN JAASIEL [THE] SON OF ABNER 21over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead was Iddo son of Zechariah; over Benjamin was Jaasiel son of Abner;
22FOR DAN AZAREL [THE] SON OF JEROHAM THESE [WERE] [THE] COMMANDERS OF [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL 22and over Dan was Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23AND NOT HE TOOK DAVID NUMBER THEIR <TO> FROM A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AND <TO> DOWNWARDS FOR HE HAD SAID YAHWEH TO MULTIPLY <OBJ.> ISRAEL LIKE [THE] STARS OF THE HEAVENS 23David did not count the men aged twenty or under, because the LORD had said that He would make Israel as numerous as the stars of the sky.
24JOAB [THE] SON OF ZERUIAH HE BEGAN TO COUNT AND NOT HE FINISHED AND IT WAS BY THIS WRATH [WAS] TOWARDS ISRAEL AND NOT IT WENT UP THE NUMBER IN [THE] NUMBER OF [THE] WORDS OF THE DAYS OF THE KING DAVID 24Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. For because of this census wrath came upon Israel, and the number was not entered in the Book of the Chronicles of King David.
25AND [WAS] OVER [THE] STOREHOUSES OF THE KING AZMAVETH [THE] SON OF ADIEL AND [WAS] OVER THE STOREHOUSES IN THE OPEN COUNTRY IN THE CITIES AND IN THE VILLAGES AND IN THE TOWERS JONATHAN [THE] SON OF UZZIAH David’s Various Overseers 25Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses. Jonathan son of Uzziah was in charge of the storehouses in the country, in the cities, in the villages, and in the fortresses.
26AND [WAS] OVER [THE] DOERS OF [THE] WORK OF THE FIELD FOR [THE] LABOR OF THE GROUND EZRI [THE] SON OF KELUB 26Ezri son of Chelub was in charge of the workers in the fields who tilled the soil.
27AND [WAS] OVER THE VINEYARDS SHIMEI THE RAMATHITE AND [WAS] OVER [THAT] WHICH [WAS] IN THE VINEYARDS TO [THE] STOREHOUSES OF THE WINE ZABDI THE SHIPHMITE 27Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards. Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.
28AND [WAS] OVER THE OLIVE TREES AND THE SYCAMORE-FIG TREES WHICH [WERE] IN THE SHEPHELAH BAAL- HANAN THE GEDERITE AND [WAS] OVER [THE] STOREHOUSES OF THE OIL JOASH 28Baal-hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore trees in the foothills.*NoteCloseHebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea Joash was in charge of the stores of olive oil.
29AND [WAS] OVER THE CATTLE WHICH GRAZED IN <THE> SHARON SHIRTAI THE SHARONITE AND [WAS] OVER THE CATTLE IN THE VALLEYS SHAPHAT [THE] SON ADLAI 29Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds grazing in Sharon. Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30AND [WAS] OVER THE CAMELS OBIL THE ISHMAELITE AND [WAS] OVER THE SHE-ASSES JEHDEIAH THE MERONOTHITE 30Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.
31AND [WAS] OVER THE FLOCK[S] JAZIZ THE HAGRITE ALL THESE [WERE] [THE] OFFICIALS OF THE PROPERTY WHICH [BELONGED] TO THE KING DAVID 31Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the flocks. All these officials were in charge of King David’s property.
32AND JONATHAN [THE] UNCLE OF DAVID [WAS] A COUNSELOR [WAS] A MAN UNDERSTANDING AND A SCRIBE HE AND JEHIEL [THE] SON OF HACMONI [WAS] WITH [THE] SONS OF THE KING The Counselors 32David’s uncle Jonathan was a counselor; he was a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hachmoni attended to the sons of the king.
33AND AHITHOPHEL [WAS] A COUNSELOR OF THE KING AND HUSHAI THE ARKITE [WAS] [THE] FRIEND OF THE KING 33Ahithophel was the king’s counselor. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
34AND [WAS] AFTER AHITHOPHEL JEHOIADA [THE] SON OF BENAIAH AND ABIATHAR AND [WAS THE] COMMANDER OF [THE] ARMY OF THE KING JOAB 34Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah, then by Abiathar. Joab was the commander of the king’s army.
