33EVEN AS I MYSELF ALSO ALL IN ALL THINGS PLEASE NOT SEEKING THE OF MYSELF PROFITING BUT THAT OF THE MANY THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED. 33as I also try to please everyone in all I do. For I am not seeking my own good, but the good of many, that they may be saved.
1IMITATORS OF ME DO BE EVEN AS I MYSELF ALSO [AM] OF CHRIST. Roles in Worship 1You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
2I COMMEND NOW YOU BROTHERS THAT IN ALL THINGS ME YOU HAVE REMEMBERED, AND EVEN AS I DELIVERED TO YOU THE TEACHINGS YOU ARE KEEPING. 2Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you.
3I WANT HOWEVER YOU TO KNOW THAT OF EVERY MAN THE HEAD <THE> CHRIST IS, [THE] HEAD NOW OF [THE] WOMAN [IS] THE MAN; [THE] HEAD NOW <THE> OF CHRIST <THE> GOD. 3But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
4EVERY MAN PRAYING OR PROPHESYING [ANYTHING] ON [HIS] HEAD HAVING HE DISHONORS THE HEAD OF HIM. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
5EVERY NOW WOMAN PRAYING OR PROPHESYING UNCOVERED WITH THE HEAD DISHONORS THE HEAD OF HER; ONE FOR IT IS AND THE SAME WITH WHICH SHAVEN. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved.
6IF FOR NOT COVERS HER HEAD A WOMAN, ALSO SHE SHOULD BE SHORN; IF [IT IS] NOW DISGRACEFUL TO A WOMAN <THE> TO BE SHORN OR TO BE SHAVEN, SHE SHOULD COVER HER HEAD. 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
7A MAN INDEED FOR NOT OUGHT TO COVER THE HEAD IMAGE AND GLORY OF GOD BEING; THE WOMAN HOWEVER [THE] GLORY OF MAN IS; 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
9TRULY FOR NOT WAS CREATED MAN ON ACCOUNT OF THE WOMAN BUT WOMAN ON ACCOUNT OF THE MAN; 9Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
10BECAUSE OF THIS OUGHT THE WOMAN AUTHORITY TO HAVE ON THE HEAD ON ACCOUNT OF THE ANGELS. 10For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on*NoteCloseOr have authority over her head, because of the angels.
11HOWEVER NEITHER [IS] WOMAN WITHOUT MAN NOR MAN WITHOUT WOMAN IN [THE] LORD; 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
12JUST AS FOR THE WOMAN OF THE MAN [IS] SO ALSO THE MAN THROUGH THE WOMAN [IS], THE HOWEVER ALL THINGS OF <THE> GOD. 12For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
13IN YOU YOURSELVES DO JUDGE: BECOMING IS IT FOR A WOMAN REVEALED <THE> TO GOD TO PRAY? 13Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14OR NOT EVEN <THE> NATURE ITSELF DOES TEACH YOU THAT A MAN INDEED IF HE SHALL HAVE LONG HAIR, A DISHONOR TO HIM IT IS, 14Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
15A WOMAN HOWEVER IF SHE SHALL HAVE LONG HAIR, GLORY TO HER IT IS? FOR THE LONG HAIR INSTEAD OF A COVERING HAS BEEN GIVEN TO HER; 15but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
16IF NOW ANYONE IS INCLINED CONTENTIOUS TO BE, WE OURSELVES SUCH CUSTOM NO [OTHER] HAVE NOR THE CHURCHES <THE> OF GOD. 16If anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.
17IN THIS NOW INSTRUCTING NOT I DO PRAISE BECAUSE NOT FOR THE BETTER BUT FOR THE WORSE YOU COME TOGETHER. Sharing in the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:20–30; Mark 14:17–26; Luke 22:14–23) 17In the following instructions I have no praise to offer, because your gatherings do more harm than good.
18FIRST INDEED FOR COMING TOGETHER YOU IN <THE> AN ASSEMBLY I HEAR DIVISIONS AMONG YOU THERE TO BE, AND IN PART IT I BELIEVE; 18First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
19IT BEHOOVES FOR ALSO FACTIONS AMONG YOU THERE TO BE, SO THAT ALSO THE APPROVED EVIDENT MAY BECOME AMONG YOU. 19And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.
20COMING THEREFORE OF YOU TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE NOT IT IS [THE] LORD’S SUPPER TO EAT; 20Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat.
21ONE FOR <THE> [THEIR] OWN SUPPER TAKES FIRST IN <THE> EATING, AND THIS [ONE] INDEED IS HUNGRY, THAT [ONE] HOWEVER IS DRUNKEN. 21For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without sharing his meal.*NoteCloseLiterally each one takes first his own meal. While one remains hungry, another gets drunk.
22SURELY NOT INDEED HOUSES SURELY YOU HAVE IN WHICH TO EAT AND TO DRINK? OR THE CHURCH <THE> OF GOD DO YOU DESPISE AND PUT TO SHAME THOSE NOTHING HAVING? WHAT SHALL I SAY TO YOU SHALL I PRAISE YOU IN THIS? NOT I PRAISE [YOU]! 22Don’t you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!
23I MYSELF FOR RECEIVED FROM THE LORD THAT WHICH ALSO I DELIVERED TO YOU THAT THE LORD JESUS IN THE NIGHT IN WHICH HE WAS BETRAYED TOOK BREAD, 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,
24AND HAVING GIVEN THANKS HE BROKE [IT] AND SAID DO TAKE DO EAT: THIS OF ME IS THE BODY WHICH [IS] FOR YOU BEING BROKEN; THIS DO PERFORM IN <THE> OF ME REMEMBRANCE. 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you;*NoteCloseBYZ and TR which is broken for you do this in remembrance of Me.”
25LIKEWISE ALSO THE CUP AFTER <THE> HAVING SUPPED SAYING; THIS <THE> CUP THE NEW COVENANT IS IN <THE> MY BLOOD; THIS DO PERFORM, AS OFTEN AS WHEN YOU SHALL DRINK [IT], IN <THE> OF ME REMEMBRANCE. 25In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. ”
26AS OFTEN AS FOR WHEN YOU SHALL EAT <THE> BREAD THIS AND <THE> CUP THIS MAY DRINK, THE DEATH OF THE LORD YOU PROCLAIM UNTIL THAT WHEN HE MAY COME. 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
27THEREFORE WHO[EVER] MAYBE MAY EAT <THE> BREAD THIS OR MAY DRINK THE CUP OF THE LORD UNWORTHILY OF THE - LORD GUILTY WILL BE OF THE BODY AND OF THE BLOOD OF THE LORD. 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the*NoteCloseOr will be responsible for the body and blood of the Lord.
28SHOULD EXAMINE HOWEVER A MAN HIMSELF, AND IN THIS MANNER OF THE BREAD HE SHOULD EAT AND OF THE CUP HE SHOULD DRINK; 28Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
29THE [ONE] FOR EATING AND DRINKING UNWORTHILY JUDGMENT ON HIMSELF HE EATS AND HE DRINKS NOT DISCERNING THE BODY OF THE LORD. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body*NoteCloseBYZ and TR the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
30BECAUSE OF THIS AMONG YOU MANY [ARE] WEAK AND SICK, AND ARE FALLEN ASLEEP MANY. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
31IF FOR OURSELVES WE WERE JUDGING, NOT THEN WOULD WE WERE COME UNDER JUDGMENT; 31Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment.
32BEING JUDGED HOWEVER BY THE LORD WE ARE DISCIPLINED, SO THAT NOT WITH THE WORLD WE MAY BE CONDEMNED. 32But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.
33SO THEN, BROTHERS OF MINE, COMING TOGETHER IN ORDER <THE> TO EAT ONE ANOTHER DO WAIT FOR; 33So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
34IF NOW ANYONE IS HUNGRY, AT HOME HE SHOULD EAT, SO THAT NOT FOR JUDGMENT YOU MAY COME TOGETHER. <THE> AND THE OTHER THINGS AS SOON AS WHEN I MAY COME I WILL SET IN ORDER. 34If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.
