27BUT I BATTER MY <THE> BODY AND BRING [IT] INTO SERVITUDE, LEST PERHAPS TO OTHERS HAVING PREACHED MYSELF DISQUALIFIED I MAY BE. 27No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
1NOT I WANT FOR YOU TO BE IGNORANT, BROTHERS, THAT THE FATHERS OF US ALL UNDER THE CLOUD WERE AND ALL THROUGH THE SEA PASSED, Warnings from Israel’s Past (Numbers 16:41–50; Numbers 25:1–5) 1I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.
2AND ALL INTO <THE> MOSES WERE BAPTIZED IN THE CLOUD AND IN THE SEA 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
4AND ALL THE SAME SPIRITUAL THEY DRANK DRINK THEY WERE DRINKING FOR FROM [THE] SPIRITUAL ACCOMPANYING [THEM] ROCK, THE ROCK THEN WAS <THE> CHRIST; 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
5NEVERTHELESS NOT WITH THE MOST OF THEM WAS WELL PLEASED <THE> GOD; THEY WERE STREWN FOR IN THE WILDERNESS. 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
6THESE THINGS NOW TYPES TO US HAVE BECOME FOR <THE> NOT TO BE US DESIRERS OF EVIL THINGS EVEN AS THEY ALSO DESIRED. 6These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did.
7NEITHER IDOLATERS DO BECOME EVEN AS SOME OF THEM AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: SAT DOWN THE PEOPLE TO EAT AND TO DRINK AND ROSE UP TO PLAY. 7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”*NoteCloseOr to play; Exodus 32:6
8NEITHER SHALL WE COMMIT SEXUAL IMMORALITY EVEN AS SOME OF THEM COMMITTED SEXUAL IMMORALITY, AND FELL IN ONE DAY TWENTY THREE THOUSAND. 8We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
9NEITHER SHALL WE TEST THE CHRIST EVEN AS AND SOME OF THEM TESTED, AND BY <THE> SERPENTS WERE DESTROYED. 9We should not test Christ,*NoteCloseWH, NE, and Tischendorf test the Lord as some of them did, and were killed by snakes.
10NEITHER DO GRUMBLE JUST AS AND SOME OF THEM GRUMBLED, AND PERISHED BY THE DESTROYER. 10And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.*NoteCloseLiterally the destroyer
11THESE THINGS NOW ALL TYPOLOGICALLY IT WAS HAPPENING TO THEM, WERE WRITTEN THEN FOR ADMONITION OF US TO WHOM THE ENDS OF THE AGES HAS COME. 11Now these things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.
12THEREFORE THE [ONE] THINKING TO HAVE STOOD HE SHOULD TAKE HEED LEST HE MAY FALL. 12So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.
13TEMPTATION YOU NOT HAS SEIZED ONLY EXCEPT WHAT IS COMMON TO MAN; FAITHFUL NOW <THE> [IS] GOD, WHO NOT WILL ALLOW YOU TO BE TEMPTED BEYOND WHAT YOU ARE ABLE, BUT WILL PROVIDE WITH THE TEMPTATION ALSO THE ESCAPE <THE> TO BE ABLE YOU TO ENDURE [IT]. 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.
14THEREFORE, BELOVED OF MINE, DO FLEE FROM <THE> IDOLATRY. Flee from Idolatry (Exodus 20:22–26) 14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
15AS TO SENSIBLE [ONES] I SPEAK, DO JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES WHAT I SAY. 15I speak to reasonable people; judge for yourselves what I say.
16THE CUP <THE> OF BLESSING THAT WE BLESS, SURELY A PARTICIPATION IT IS IN THE BLOOD <THE> OF CHRIST THE BREAD THAT WE BREAK, SURELY A PARTICIPATION IN THE BODY <THE> OF CHRIST IT IS? 16Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17BECAUSE [THERE IS] ONE LOAF ONE BODY THE MANY WE ARE; <THE> FOR ALL OF THE ONE LOAF WE PARTAKE. 17Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.
18DO CONSIDER <THE> ISRAEL ACCORDING TO FLESH: SURELY THOSE EATING THE SACRIFICES FELLOW PARTAKERS IN THE ALTAR ARE? 18Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?
19WHAT THEN DO I MEAN? THAT AN IDOL-SACRIFICE ANYTHING IS OR THAT AN IDOL ANYTHING IS? 19Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20RATHER THAT WHAT THEY SACRIFICE THE GENTILES TO DEMONS AND NOT TO GOD THEY SACRIFICE; NOT I DO WISH NOW YOU FELLOW PARTAKERS <THE> WITH DEMONS TO BE. 20No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
21NOT YOU ARE ABLE [THE] CUP OF [THE] LORD TO DRINK AND [THE] CUP OF DEMONS; NOT YOU ARE ABLE OF [THE] TABLE OF [THE] LORD TO PARTAKE AND OF [THE] TABLE OF DEMONS. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.
22OR DO WE PROVOKE TO JEALOUSY THE LORD? SURELY NOT STRONGER THAN HE ARE WE? 22Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
23ALL THINGS TO ME ARE LAWFUL BUT NOT ALL THINGS ARE PROFITABLE; ALL THINGS TO ME ARE LAWFUL BUT NOT ALL EDIFY. All to God’s Glory (1 Peter 4:1–11) 23“Everything is permissible,”*NoteCloseOr “All things are lawful,” twice in this verse but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible, ” but not everything is edifying.
24NO ONE THE [GOOD] OF HIMSELF SHOULD SEEK BUT THAT OF THE OTHER EACH. 24No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
25EVERYTHING <THE> IN THE MEAT MARKET BEING SOLD DO EAT NOTHING INQUIRING ON ACCOUNT OF <THE> CONSCIENCE; 25Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
26THE LORD’S FOR [IS] THE EARTH AND THE FULLNESS OF IT. 26for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”*NoteClosePsalm 24:1
27IF NOW ANYONE INVITES YOU OF THE UNBELIEVING AND YOU WISH TO GO, EVERYTHING WHICH IS BEING SET BEFORE YOU DO EAT NOTHING INQUIRING ON ACCOUNT OF <THE> CONSCIENCE; 27If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
28IF HOWEVER ANYONE TO YOU SHALL SAY; THIS TEMPLE-SACRIFICE IS, NOT DO EAT ON ACCOUNT OF HIM WHICH HAVING SHOWN [IT] AND <THE> CONSCIENCE; OF THE FOR LORD [IS] THE EARTH AND THE FULLNESS OF HER. 28But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols, ” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—*NoteCloseBYZ and TR and for the sake of conscience—for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof—
29[THE] CONSCIENCE NOW I AM SAYING [IS] NOT <THE> YOUR OWN BUT THAT OF THE OTHER. SO WHY FOR THE FREEDOM OF MINE IS JUDGED BY ANOTHER’S CONSCIENCE? 29the other one’s conscience I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
30IF NOW I MYSELF WITH THANKFULNESS PARTAKE, WHY AM I DENIGRATED FOR THAT WHICH I MYSELF GIVE THANKS? 30If I partake in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
31WHETHER THEREFORE YOU EAT OR DRINK OR WHATEVER YOU PERFORM, ALL THINGS TO THE GLORY OF GOD DO PERFORM. 31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
32WITHOUT OFFENSE BOTH TO JEWS DO YOU BE AND TO GREEKS AND TO THE CHURCH <THE> OF GOD — 32Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God—
33EVEN AS I MYSELF ALSO ALL IN ALL THINGS PLEASE NOT SEEKING THE OF MYSELF PROFITING BUT THAT OF THE MANY THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED. 33as I also try to please everyone in all I do. For I am not seeking my own good, but the good of many, that they may be saved.
