29IF YOU KNOW THAT RIGHTEOUS HE IS, YOU KNOW THAT ALSO EVERYONE WHO IS PRACTICING THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF HIM HAS BEEN BEGOTTEN. 29If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.
1BEHOLD WHAT LOVE HAS GIVEN TO US THE FATHER, THAT CHILDREN OF GOD WE MAY BE CALLED — AND WE ARE! BECAUSE OF THIS THE WORLD NOT KNOWS US, BECAUSE NOT IT KNEW HIM. Children of God 1Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
2BELOVED, NOW CHILDREN OF GOD ARE WE, AND NOT YET HAS BEEN REVEALED WHAT WE WILL BE; WE KNOW NOW THAT WHEN HE SHALL APPEAR, LIKE HIM WE WILL BE, FOR WE WILL BEHOLD HIM EVEN AS HE IS. 2Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears,*NoteCloseLiterally when He appears or when it appears we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
3AND EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING <THE> HOPE THIS IN HIM PURIFIES HIMSELF EVEN AS HE PURE IS. 3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure.*NoteCloseLiterally just as He is pure
4EVERYONE WHO IS COMMITTING <THE> SIN ALSO <THE> LAWLESSNESS COMMITS, AND <THE> SIN IS <THE> LAWLESSNESS. 4Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.*NoteCloseOr is violation of the Law
5AND YOU KNOW THAT HE APPEARED SO THAT THE SINS OF US HE MAY TAKE AWAY, AND SIN IN HIM NOT THERE IS. 5But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
6ANYONE <THE> IN HIM ABIDING NOT SINS; ANYONE WHO IS SINNING NOT HAS SEEN HIM NOR HAS HE KNOWN HIM. 6No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.
7LITTLE CHILDREN, NO ONE SHOULD LEAD ASTRAY YOU; WHO ARE PRACTICING <THE> RIGHTEOUSNESS RIGHTEOUS IS EVEN AS HE RIGHTEOUS IS. 7Little children,*NoteCloseNA Young children in training let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.*NoteCloseLiterally He is righteous
8THE [ONE] PRACTICING <THE> SIN OF THE DEVIL IS, BECAUSE FROM [THE] BEGINNING THE DEVIL HAS BEEN SINNING. FOR THIS [REASON] WAS REVEALED THE SON <THE> OF GOD SO THAT HE MAY DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL. 8The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
9ANYONE WHO BORN OF <THE> GOD SIN NOT PRACTICES, BECAUSE SEED OF HIM IN HIM ABIDES; AND NOT HE IS ABLE TO CONTINUE SINNING, BECAUSE OF <THE> GOD HE HAS BEEN BORN. 9Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
10THROUGH THIS MANIFEST ARE THE CHILDREN <THE> OF GOD AND THE CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL. ANYONE <THE> NOT PRACTICING RIGHTEOUSNESS NOT IS OF <THE> GOD, AND ALSO THE [ONE] NOT LOVING THE BROTHER OF HIM; 10By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
11FOR THIS IS THE MESSAGE THAT YOU HAVE HEARD FROM [THE] BEGINNING THAT WE MAY LOVE ONE ANOTHER; Love One Another (John 13:31–35; Romans 12:9–13) 11This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
12NOT EVEN AS CAIN [WHO] OF THE EVIL [ONE] WAS AND HE SLEW THE BROTHER OF HIM; AND BECAUSE OF WHAT HE SLAYED HIM? BECAUSE THE WORKS OF HIM EVIL WERE, THOSE HOWEVER OF THE BROTHER OF HIM RIGHTEOUS. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.
13AND NOT DO BE SURPRISED, BROTHERS OF MINE IF HATES YOU THE WORLD. 13So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
14WE OURSELVES KNOW THAT WE HAVE PASSED FROM <THE> DEATH TO <THE> LIFE, BECAUSE WE LOVE <THE> [OUR] BROTHERS; THE [ONE] NOT LOVING THE BROTHER ABIDES IN <THE> DEATH. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death.
15EVERYONE WHO IS HATING THE BROTHER OF HIM A MURDERER IS; AND YOU KNOW THAT ANY MURDERER NOT HAS LIFE ETERNAL IN HIM ABIDING. 15Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer.
16BY THIS WE HAVE KNOWN <THE> LOVE BECAUSE HE FOR US THE LIFE OF HIM LAID DOWN; AND WE OURSELVES OUGHT FOR <THE> [OUR] BROTHERS <THE> [OUR] LIVES TO LAY DOWN. 16By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
17WHO[EVER] NOW MAYBE MAY HAVE THE GOODS OF THE WORLD AND MAY SEE THE BROTHER OF HIM NEED HAVING AND HE MAY CLOSE UP THE HEART OF HIM FROM HIM, HOW THE LOVE <THE> OF GOD ABIDES IN HIM? 17If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?
18LITTLE CHILDREN OF MINE NOT WE MAY LOVE IN WORD NOR <THE> IN TONGUE BUT IN ACTION AND IN TRUTH. 18Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
19AND BY THIS WE WILL KNOW THAT OF THE TRUTH WE ARE AND BEFORE HIM WE WILL ASSURE <THE> HEART OF US, 19And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence:
20THAT IF SHALL CONDEMN [US] OUR <THE> HEART, THAT GREATER THAN IS THE GOD OF THE HEART OF US AND HE KNOWS ALL THINGS. 20Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.
21BELOVED, IF THE HEART OF US NOT SHALL CONDEMN US CONFIDENCE WE HAVE TOWARD <THE> GOD, 21Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God,
22AND WHATEVER MAYBE WE SHALL ASK WE RECEIVE FROM HIM, BECAUSE THE COMMANDMENTS OF HIM WE KEEP AND THE [THINGS] PLEASING BEFORE HIM WE DO. 22and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.
23AND THIS IS THE COMMANDMENT OF HIM THAT WE MAY BELIEVE IN THE NAME OF THE SON OF HIM JESUS CHRIST AND WE MAY LOVE ONE ANOTHER EVEN AS HE GAVE [THE] COMMANDMENT TO US. 23And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
24AND THE [ONE] KEEPING THE COMMANDMENTS OF HIM IN HIM ABIDES, AND HE IN HIM. AND BY THIS WE KNOW THAT HE ABIDES IN US, BY THE SPIRIT WHOM TO US HE HAS GIVEN. 24Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.
