1 AND HE WAS A MAN ONE FROM <THE> RAMATHAIM ZOPHIM FROM [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM AND NAME HIS [WAS] ELKANAH [THE] SON OF JEROHAM [THE] SON OF ELIHU [THE] SON OF TOHU [THE] SON OF ZUPH AN EPHRATHITE
Elkanah and His Wives
(Psalm 113:1–9 )
1 Now there was a man named Elkanah who was from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 AND [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM TWO WIVES [THE] NAME OF ONE [WAS] HANNAH AND [THE] NAME OF THE SECOND [WAS] PENINNAH AND IT BELONGED TO PENINNAH CHILDREN AND [BELONGED] TO HANNAH NOT CHILDREN
2 He had two wives, one named Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 AND HE WENT UP THE MAN <THE> THAT FROM CITY HIS FROM DAYS DAYS TOWARDS TO BOW DOWN AND TO SACRIFICE TO YAHWEH OF HOSTS AT SHILOH AND THERE [THE] TWO [THE] SONS OF ELI HOPHNI AND PHINEHAS [WERE] PRIESTS OF YAHWEH
3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
4 AND IT WAS THE DAY AND HE SACRIFICED ELKANAH AND HE GAVE TO PENINNAH WIFE HIS AND TO ALL SONS HER AND DAUGHTERS HER PORTIONS
4 And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
5 AND TO HANNAH HE GAVE A PORTION ONE DOUBLE FOR <OBJ.> HANNAH HE LOVED AND YAHWEH HE HAD CLOSED WOMB HER
5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her womb.
6 AND SHE PROVOKED HER RIVAL HER ALSO PROVOCATION IN ORDER TO DISCONCERT HER FOR HE HAD CLOSED YAHWEH BEHIND WOMB HER
6 Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival would provoke her viciously to taunt her.
7 AND THUS HE DID A YEAR IN A YEAR AS OFTEN AS WENT UP SHE IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH THUS SHE PROVOKED HER AND SHE WEPT AND NOT SHE ATE
7 And this went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD her rival taunted her until she wept and would not eat.
8 AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER ELKANAH HUSBAND HER O HANNAH <TO> WHY? DO YOU WEEP AND <TO> WHY? NOT ARE YOU EATING AND <TO> WHY? IS SAD HEART YOUR ¿ NOT [AM] I GOOD TO <THE> YOU MORE THAN TEN SONS
8 “Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9 AND SHE AROSE HANNAH AFTER HAD EATEN IN SHILOH AND AFTER HAD DRUNK AND ELI THE PRIEST [WAS] SITTING ON THE SEAT AT [THE] DOORPOST OF [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH
Hannah Prays for a Son
9 So after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
10 AND SHE [WAS] BITTER OF SOUL AND SHE PRAYED TO YAHWEH AND UTTERLY <TO WEEP> SHE WEPT
10 In her bitter distress, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears.
11 AND SHE VOWED A VOW AND SHE SAID O YAHWEH OF HOSTS <IF> CERTAINLY [IF] <TO SEE> YOU WILL LOOK ON [THE] AFFLICTION OF MAIDSERVANT YOUR AND YOU WILL REMEMBER ME AND NOT YOU WILL FORGET <OBJ.> MAIDSERVANT YOUR AND YOU WILL GIVE TO MAIDSERVANT OF YOUR SPRING OF MEN AND I WILL GIVE HIM TO YAHWEH ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE HIS AND A RAZOR NOT IT WILL GO UP ON HEAD HIS
11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD of Hosts, if only You will look upon the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, not forgetting Your maidservant but giving her a son, then I will dedicate him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head.”
12 AND IT WAS THAT SHE HAD INCREASED TO PRAY <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND ELI [WAS] WATCHING <OBJ.> MOUTH HER
12 As Hannah kept on praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth.
13 AND HANNAH SHE [WAS] SPEAKING TO HEART HER ONLY LIPS HER [WERE] QUIVERING AND VOICE HER NOT IT WAS HEARD AND HE CONSIDERED HER ELI TO A DRUNKEN [WOMAN]
13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard.
So Eli thought she was drunk
14 AND HE SAID TO HER ELI UNTIL WHEN? WILL YOU BE DRUNK ! REMOVE <OBJ.> WINE YOUR FROM WITH <THE> YOU
14 and said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine
15 AND SHE ANSWERED HANNAH AND SHE SAID NO O LORD MY [AM] A WOMAN HARD OF SPIRIT I AND WINE AND STRONG DRINK NOT I HAVE DRUNK AND I HAVE POURED OUT <OBJ.> SOUL MY <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH
15 “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
16 MAY NOT YOU GIVE <OBJ.> MAIDSERVANT YOUR <TO> BEFORE A DAUGHTER OF WORTHLESSNESS FOR FROM [THE] GREATNESS OF COMPLAINT MY AND PROVOCATION MY I HAVE SPOKEN UNTIL NOW
16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman, for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my anguish and grief.”
17 AND HE ANSWERED ELI AND HE SAID GO TO PEACE AND [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL MAY HE GRANT <OBJ.> PETITION YOUR WHICH YOU HAVE ASKED FROM WITH <THE> HIM
17 “Go in peace,” Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
18 AND SHE SAID MAY SHE FIND MAIDSERVANT YOUR FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR AND SHE WENT THE WOMAN TO WAY HER AND SHE ATE AND FACE HER NOT THEY WERE TO <THE> HER STILL
18 “May your maidservant find favor with you,” said Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began to eat, and her face was no longer downcast
19 AND THEY ROSE EARLY IN THE MORNING AND THEY BOWED DOWN <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY WENT TO HOUSE THEIR <THE> RAMAH TOWARDS AND HE KNEW ELKANAH <OBJ.> HANNAH WIFE HIS AND HE REMEMBERED HER YAHWEH
The Birth of Samuel
19 The next morning they got up early to bow in worship before the LORD, and then they returned home to Ramah.
And Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
20 AND IT WAS TO [THE] CIRCUIT OF THE DAYS AND SHE CONCEIVED HANNAH AND SHE BORE A SON AND SHE CALLED <OBJ.> NAME HIS SAMUEL FOR FROM YAHWEH I ASKED FOR HIM
20 So in the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
21 AND HE WENT UP THE MAN ELKANAH AND ALL HOUSEHOLD HIS TO SACRIFICE TO YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] SACRIFICE OF THE DAYS AND <OBJ.> VOW HIS
21 Then Elkanah and all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
22 AND HANNAH NOT SHE WENT UP FOR SHE SAID TO HUSBAND HER UNTIL HE WILL BE WEANED THE LAD AND I WILL TAKE HIM AND HE WILL APPEAR WITH [THE] PRESENCE OF YAHWEH AND HE WILL DWELL THERE UNTIL PERPETUITY
22 but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently
23 AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER ELKANAH HUSBAND HER DO THE GOOD IN VIEW YOUR REMAIN UNTIL WEAN YOU <OBJ.> HIM ONLY MAY HE CARRY OUT YAHWEH <OBJ.> WORD HIS AND SHE REMAINED THE WOMAN AND SHE SUCKLED <OBJ.> SON HER UNTIL HAD WEANED SHE <OBJ.> HIM
23 “Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied “and stay here until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD confirm His word.”
So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 AND SHE BROUGHT UP HIM WITH HER JUST WHEN SHE HAD WEANED HIM WITH YOUNG BULLS THREE AND AN EPHAH ONE OF FLOUR AND A SKIN OF WINE AND SHE TOOK HIM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH SHILOH AND THE LAD [WAS] A LAD
24 Once she had weaned him, Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
25 AND THEY SLAUGHTERED <OBJ.> THE YOUNG BULL AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> THE LAD TO ELI
25 And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli.
26 AND SHE SAID PARDON ME O LORD MY [BY] [THE] LIFE OF SELF YOUR O LORD MY I [AM] THE WOMAN WHO STOOD WITH YOU IN THIS [PLACE] TO PRAY TO YAHWEH
26 “Please, my lord,” said Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
27 CONCERNING THE LAD <THE> THIS I PRAYED AND HE HAS GRANTED YAHWEH TO <THE> ME <OBJ.> PETITION MY WHICH I ASKED FROM WITH <THE> HIM
27 I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
28 AND ALSO I I ENTRUST HIM TO YAHWEH ALL THE DAYS WHICH HE HAS BEEN HE [IS] ASKED BY YAHWEH AND HE BOWED DOWN THERE TO YAHWEH
28 I now dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.”
So they worshiped the LORD there.
