35AND NOT HE REPEATED SAMUEL TO SEE <OBJ.> SAUL UNTIL [THE] DAY OF DEATH HIS FOR HE MOURNED SAMUEL CONCERNING SAUL AND YAHWEH HE REGRETTED THAT HE HAD MADE KING <OBJ.> SAUL OVER ISRAEL 35And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel mourned for Saul, and the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
1AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SAMUEL UNTIL WHEN? [ARE] YOU MOURNING TO SAUL AND I I HAVE REJECTED HIM FROM REIGNING OVER ISRAEL FILL HORN YOUR OIL AND GO I WILL SEND YOU TO JESSE [THE] BETH- <THE> -LEHEMITE FOR I HAVE SEEN AMONG SONS HIS FOR <THE> MYSELF A KING Samuel Anoints David 1Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
2AND HE SAID SAMUEL HOW? WILL I GO AND HE WILL HEAR SAUL AND HE WILL KILL ME AND HE SAID YAHWEH A HEIFER OF CATTLE YOU WILL TAKE IN HAND YOUR AND YOU WILL SAY TO SACRIFICE TO YAHWEH I HAVE COME 2“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The LORD answered, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
3AND YOU WILL INVITE <TO> JESSE AT THE SACRIFICE AND I I WILL MAKE KNOWN TO YOU <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH YOU WILL DO AND YOU WILL ANOINT FOR <THE> ME <OBJ.> [THE ONE] WHOM I WILL SAY TO YOU 3Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate
4AND HE DID SAMUEL <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE SAID YAHWEH AND HE CAME BETH- -LEHEM AND THEY TREMBLED [THE] ELDERS OF THE CITY TO MEET HIM AND SOMEONE SAID [IN] PEACE [ARE] COMING? YOU 4So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
5AND HE SAID PEACE TO SACRIFICE TO YAHWEH I HAVE COME CONSECRATE YOURSELVES AND YOU WILL COME WITH ME AT THE SACRIFICE AND HE CONSECRATED <OBJ.> JESSE AND <OBJ.> SONS HIS AND HE INVITED <TO> <THE> THEM TO THE SACRIFICE 5“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6AND IT WAS WHEN CAME THEY AND HE SAW <OBJ.> ELIAB AND HE SAID SURELY [IS] BEFORE YAHWEH ANOINTED HIS 6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.”
7AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SAMUEL MAY NOT YOU LOOK TO APPEARANCE HIS AND TO [THE] HEIGHT OF STATURE HIS FOR I HAVE REJECTED HIM FOR NOT [THAT] WHICH HE SEES <THE> MAN FOR <THE> MAN HE SEES TO THE EYES AND YAHWEH HE SEES TO THE HEART 7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
8AND HE CALLED JESSE TO ABINADAB AND HE MADE PASS BY HIM <TO> BEFORE SAMUEL AND HE SAID ALSO <IN> THIS ONE NOT HE HAS CHOSEN YAHWEH 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
9AND HE MADE PASS BY JESSE SHAMMAH AND HE SAID ALSO <IN> THIS ONE NOT HE HAS CHOSEN YAHWEH 9Next Jesse presented Shammah,*NoteCloseShammah is a variant of Shimeah, Shimea, and Shimei; see 2 Samuel 13:3, 2 Samuel 21:21, and 1 Chronicles 2:13. but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
10AND HE MADE PASS BY JESSE SEVEN OF SONS HIS <TO> BEFORE SAMUEL AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO JESSE NOT HE HAS CHOSEN YAHWEH <IN> THESE 10Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
11AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO JESSE ¿ ARE THEY FINISHED THE YOUNG MEN AND HE SAID STILL HE REMAINS THE YOUNG [ONE] AND THERE! [HE IS] SHEPHERDING <IN> THE FLOCK AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO JESSE SEND! AND BRING HIM FOR NOT WE WILL TURN ROUND UNTIL COMES HE HERE 11And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” “Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives
12AND HE SENT AND HE BROUGHT HIM AND HE [WAS] RED WITH BEAUTIFUL OF EYES AND GOOD OF APPEARANCE AND HE SAID YAHWEH ARISE ANOINT HIM FOR THIS [IS] HE 12So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.”
13AND HE TOOK SAMUEL <OBJ.> [THE] HORN OF <THE> OIL AND HE ANOINTED <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] MIDST OF BROTHERS HIS AND IT RUSHED [THE] SPIRIT OF YAHWEH TO DAVID FROM THE DAY <THE> THAT AND ON -WARDS AND HE AROSE SAMUEL AND HE WENT <THE> RAMAH TOWARDS 13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
14AND [THE] SPIRIT OF YAHWEH IT DEPARTED FROM WITH SAUL AND IT TERRIFIED HIM A SPIRIT EVIL FROM WITH YAHWEH David Serves Saul 14Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a spirit of distress*NoteCloseOr a harmful spirit; similarly in verses 15, 16, and 23 from the LORD began to torment him.
15AND THEY SAID [THE] SERVANTS OF SAUL TO HIM HERE! PLEASE A SPIRIT OF GOD EVIL [IS] TERRIFYING YOU 15Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely a spirit of distress from God is tormenting you.
16LET HIM SAY PLEASE LORD OUR SERVANTS YOUR <TO> BEFORE YOU LET THEM SEEK A PERSON [WHO] KNOWS PLAYING ON THE HARP AND IT WILL BE WHEN IS ON YOU A SPIRIT OF GOD EVIL AND HE WILL PLAY WITH HAND HIS AND GOOD [WILL BELONG] TO <THE> YOU 16Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can skillfully play the harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
17AND HE SAID SAUL TO SERVANTS HIS SEE PLEASE FOR <THE> ME A PERSON [WHO] DOES WELL TO PLAY AND YOU WILL BRING [HIM] TO ME 17And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”
18AND HE ANSWERED ONE FROM THE YOUNG MEN AND HE SAID HERE! I HAVE SEEN A SON OF JESSE [THE] BETH- <THE> -LEHEMITE [WHO] KNOWS TO PLAY AND A MIGHTY [MAN] OF STRENGTH AND A MAN OF WAR AND [ONE] DISCERNING OF WORD AND A MAN OF FORM AND YAHWEH [IS] WITH HIM 18One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a mighty man of valor, a warrior, eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
19AND HE SENT SAUL MESSENGERS TO JESSE AND HE SAID SEND! TO ME <OBJ.> DAVID SON YOUR WHO [IS] WITH THE FLOCK 19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
20AND HE TOOK JESSE A DONKEY BREAD AND A SKIN-BOTTLE OF WINE AND A KID OF GOATS ONE AND HE SENT [THEM] BY [THE] HAND OF DAVID SON HIS TO SAUL 20And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them to Saul with his son David.
21AND HE CAME DAVID TO SAUL AND HE STOOD <TO> BEFORE HIM AND HE LOVED HIM EXCEEDINGLY AND HE WAS OF HIM BEARER OF ARMOR<S> 21When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul loved him very much, and David became his armor-bearer.
22AND HE SENT SAUL TO JESSE <TO> SAYING LET HIM STAND PLEASE DAVID <TO> BEFORE ME FOR HE HAS FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW MY 22Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23AND IT WAS WHEN WAS A SPIRIT OF GOD TO SAUL AND HE TOOK DAVID <OBJ.> THE HARP AND HE PLAYED WITH HAND HIS AND IT WAS RELIEF TO SAUL AND GOOD [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND IT DEPARTED FROM ON <THE> HIM [THE] SPIRIT OF <THE> EVIL 23And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would pick up his harp and play. Then Saul would find relief and feel better, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
