Goliath’s Challenge
1 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
2 AND SAUL AND [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL THEY WERE GATHERED AND THEY ENCAMPED IN [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> ELAH AND THEY DEPLOYED BATTLE TO MEET [THE] PHILISTINES
2 Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah, arraying themselves for battle against the Philistines.
3 AND [THE] PHILISTINES [WERE] STANDING TO THE MOUNTAIN FROM THIS AND ISRAEL [WERE] STANDING TO THE MOUNTAIN FROM THIS AND THE VALLEY [WAS] BETWEEN THEM
3 The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another with the valley between them.
4 AND HE CAME OUT [THE] MAN OF THE CHAMPIONS FROM [THE] CAMPS OF [THE] PHILISTINES [WAS] GOLIATH NAME HIS FROM GATH HEIGHT HIS [WAS] SIX CUBITS AND A SPAN
4 Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height,
5 AND A HELMET OF BRONZE [WAS] ON HEAD HIS AND BODY ARMOR OF SCALES HE [WAS] CLOTHED AND [THE] WEIGHT OF THE BODY ARMOR [WAS] FIVE THOUSAND<S> SHEKELS BRONZE
5 and he had a bronze helmet on his head. He wore a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels,
6 AND LEG ARMOR OF BRONZE [WAS] ON FEET HIS AND A JAVELIN OF BRONZE [WAS] BETWEEN SHOULDERS HIS
6 and he had armor of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.
7 AND [THE] WOOD OF SPEAR HIS [WAS] LIKE A BEAM OF WEAVERS AND [THE] BLADE OF SPEAR HIS [WAS] SIX HUNDRED<S> SHEKELS IRON AND [THE] BEARER OF THE BODY SHIELD [WAS] WALKING <TO> BEFORE HIM
7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. In addition, his shield bearer went before him.
8 AND HE STOOD AND HE CALLED OUT TO [THE] BATTLE LINES OF ISRAEL AND HE SAID TO <THE> THEM <TO> WHY? DO YOU COME OUT TO DEPLOY BATTLE ¿ NOT [AM] I THE PHILISTINE AND [ARE] YOU? SERVANTS OF SAUL COMMISSION FOR <THE> YOURSELVES A MAN SO HE MAY COME DOWN TO ME
8 And Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel “Why do you come out and array yourselves for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me.
9 IF HE WILL BE ABLE TO FIGHT WITH ME AND HE WILL STRIKE DOWN ME AND WE WILL BECOME OF YOU <INTO> SLAVES AND IF I I WILL PREVAIL TO <THE> HIM AND I WILL STRIKE DOWN HIM AND YOU WILL BECOME OF US <INTO> SLAVES AND YOU WILL SERVE <OBJ.> US
9 If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and work for us.”
10 AND HE SAID THE PHILISTINE I I DEFY <OBJ.> [THE] BATTLE LINES OF ISRAEL THE DAY <THE> THIS GIVE TO <THE> ME A MAN SO LET US FIGHT TOGETHER
10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day! Give me a man to fight
11 AND HE HEARD SAUL AND ALL ISRAEL <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF THE PHILISTINE <THE> THESE AND THEY WERE DISMAYED AND THEY WERE AFRAID EXCEEDINGLY
11 On hearing the words of the Philistine, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and greatly afraid.
12 AND DAVID [WAS] A SON OF A MAN AN EPHRATHITE <THE> THIS FROM BETH- -LEHEM JUDAH AND NAME HIS [WAS] JESSE AND [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM EIGHT SONS AND THE MAN IN [THE] DAYS OF SAUL HE WAS OLD HE HAD GONE AMONG MEN
David Accepts the Challenge
12 Now David was the son of a man named Jesse, an Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah who had eight sons. And in the days of Saul, Jesse was old and well along in years.
13 AND THEY HAD GONE [THE] THREE [THE] SONS OF JESSE <THE> OLD THEY HAD GONE AFTER SAUL TO <THE> BATTLE AND [THE] NAME OF [THE] THREE OF SONS HIS WHO THEY HAD GONE IN THE BATTLE [WAS] ELIAB THE FIRSTBORN AND SECOND HIS [WAS] ABINADAB AND THE THIRD [WAS] SHAMMAH
13 The three older sons of Jesse had followed Saul into battle: The firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.
14 AND DAVID HE [WAS] THE YOUNG AND THREE <THE> OLD THEY HAD GONE AFTER SAUL
14 And David was the youngest.
The three oldest had followed Saul,
15 AND DAVID [WAS] GOING AND [WAS] RETURNING FROM WITH SAUL TO SHEPHERD <OBJ.> [THE] FLOCK OF FATHER HIS BETH- -LEHEM
15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.
16 AND HE DREW NEAR THE PHILISTINE RISING EARLY AND [THE] EVENING DARKENED AND HE TOOK HIS STAND FORTY DAY[S]
16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening to take his stand.
17 AND HE SAID JESSE TO DAVID SON HIS TAKE PLEASE TO BROTHERS YOUR [THE] EPHAH OF <THE> ROASTED GRAIN <THE> THIS AND TEN BREAD[S] <THE> THIS AND BRING [THEM] QUICKLY THE CAMP TO BROTHERS YOUR
17 One day Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.
18 AND <OBJ.> [THE] TEN [THE] PORTIONS OF <THE> MILK <THE> THESE YOU WILL BRING TO [THE] COMMANDER OF THE THOUSAND AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS YOUR YOU WILL PAY ATTENTION TO WELFARE AND <OBJ.> PLEDGE THEIR YOU WILL TAKE
18 Take also these ten portions of cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the welfare of your brothers and bring back an assurance from them.
19 AND SAUL AND THEY AND EVERY <THE> MAN OF ISRAEL [ARE] IN [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> ELAH FIGHTING WITH [THE] PHILISTINES
19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
20 AND HE ROSE EARLY DAVID IN THE MORNING AND HE LEFT <OBJ.> THE FLOCK WITH A WATCHMAN AND HE LIFTED UP AND HE WENT JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED HIM JESSE AND HE CAME THE CAMP TOWARDS AND THE ARMY WHICH WAS GOING OUT TO THE BATTLE LINE AND THEY SHOUTED A WAR CRY IN THE BATTLE
20 So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as Jesse had instructed him. He reached the camp as the army was marching out to its position and shouting the battle cry.
21 AND IT DEPLOYED ISRAEL AND [THE] PHILISTINES BATTLE LINE TO MEET BATTLE LINE
21 And Israel and the Philistines arrayed in formation against each other.
22 AND HE LEFT DAVID <OBJ.> THE BAGGAGE<S> FROM WITH <THE> HIM ON [THE] HAND OF [THE] KEEPER OF THE BAGGAGE<S> AND HE RAN THE BATTLE LINE AND HE CAME AND HE ASKED OF BROTHERS HIS TO WELFARE
22 Then David left his supplies in the care of the quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.
23 AND HE [WAS] SPEAKING WITH THEM AND THERE! [THE] MAN OF THE CHAMPIONS [WAS] COMING UP [WAS] GOLIATH THE PHILISTINE NAME HIS FROM GATH FROM [THE] BATTLE LINES OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND HE SPOKE ACCORDING TO THE WORDS <THE> THESE AND HE HEARD DAVID
23 And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the champion named Goliath, the Philistine from Gath, came forward from the ranks of the Philistines and shouted his usual words, which David also heard.
24 AND EVERY <THE> MAN OF ISRAEL WHEN SAW THEY <OBJ.> THE MAN AND THEY FLED FROM BEFORE HIM AND THEY WERE AFRAID EXCEEDINGLY
24 When all the men of Israel saw Goliath they fled from him in great fear.
25 AND HE SAID [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL ¿ HAVE YOU SEEN THE MAN WHO COMES UP <THE> THIS FOR TO DEFY <OBJ.> ISRAEL [HE IS] COMING UP AND IT WILL BE THE MAN WHO HE WILL STRIKE DOWN HIM HE WILL MAKE RICH HIM THE KING RICH[ES] GREAT AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTER HIS HE WILL GIVE TO <THE> HIM AND <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER HIS HE WILL MAKE FREE IN ISRAEL
25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out to defy Israel? To the man who kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his father’s house from taxation in Israel.”
26 AND HE SAID DAVID TO THE MEN WHO WERE STANDING WITH HIM <TO> SAYING WHAT? WILL IT BE DONE FOR THE MAN WHO HE WILL STRIKE DOWN <OBJ.> THE PHILISTINE THIS AND HE WILL REMOVE REPROACH FROM ON ISRAEL THAT WHO? [IS] THE PHILISTINE <THE> UNCIRCUMCISED <THE> THIS THAT HE HAS DEFIED [THE] BATTLE LINES OF GOD LIVING
26 David asked the men who were standing with him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
27 AND IT SAID TO <THE> HIM THE PEOPLE ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS <TO> SAYING THUS IT WILL BE DONE FOR THE MAN WHO HE WILL STRIKE DOWN HIM
27 The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 AND HE HEARD ELIAB BROTHER HIS <THE> OLD WHEN SPOKE HE TO THE MEN AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF ELIAB ON DAVID AND HE SAID <TO> WHY? THIS HAVE YOU COME DOWN AND WITH WHOM? HAVE YOU LEFT [THE] FEWNESS OF THE SHEEP <THE> THOSE IN THE WILDERNESS I I KNOW <OBJ.> ARROGANCE YOUR AND <OBJ.> [THE] WICKEDNESS OF HEART YOUR THAT SO AS TO SEE THE BATTLE YOU HAVE COME DOWN
28 Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart— you have come down to see the battle!”
29 AND HE SAID DAVID WHAT? HAVE I DONE NOW ¿ NOT A WORD [WAS] IT
29 “What have I done now?” said David. “Was it not just a question?”
30 AND HE TURNED AWAY FROM BESIDE HIM TO [THE] FRONT OF ANOTHER [PERSON] AND HE SAID ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS AND THEY BROUGHT BACK HIM THE PEOPLE WORD ACCORDING TO THE WORD THE FORMER
30 Then he turned from him toward another and asked about the offer, and those people answered him just as the first ones had answered.
31 AND THEY WERE HEARD THE WORDS WHICH HE SPOKE DAVID AND PEOPLE TOLD <TO> BEFORE SAUL AND HE SENT FOR HIM
31 Now David’s words were overheard and reported to Saul, who sent for him.
32 AND HE SAID DAVID TO SAUL MAY NOT IT FALL [THE] HEART OF ANYONE ON HIM SERVANT YOUR HE WILL GO AND HE WILL FIGHT WITH THE PHILISTINE <THE> THIS
32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail on account of this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him
33 AND HE SAID SAUL TO DAVID NOT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GO AGAINST THE PHILISTINE <THE> THIS TO FIGHT WITH HIM FOR [ARE] A YOUTH YOU AND HE [IS] A MAN OF WAR SINCE YOUTH<S> HIS
33 But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against this Philistine to fight him. You are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 AND HE SAID DAVID TO SAUL SHEPHERDING HE WAS SERVANT YOUR FOR FATHER HIS <IN> THE FLOCK AND IT CAME THE LION AND WITH THE BEAR AND IT CARRIED OFF A SHEEP FROM THE FLOCK
34 David replied “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
35 AND I WENT OUT AFTER IT AND I STRUCK IT AND I RESCUED [IT] FROM MOUTH ITS AND IT ROSE UP ON ME AND I TOOK HOLD ON BEARD ITS AND I STRUCK IT AND I KILLED IT
35 I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.
36 BOTH <OBJ.> THE LION AS WELL AS THE BEAR HE HAS STRUCK DOWN SERVANT YOUR AND HE WILL BE THE PHILISTINE <THE> UNCIRCUMCISED <THE> THIS LIKE ONE FROM <THE> THEM FOR HE HAS DEFIED [THE] BATTLE LINES OF GOD LIVING
36 Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
37 AND HE SAID DAVID YAHWEH WHO HE DELIVERED ME FROM [THE] HAND OF THE LION AND FROM [THE] HAND OF THE BEAR HE HE WILL DELIVER ME FROM [THE] HAND OF THE PHILISTINE <THE> THIS AND HE SAID SAUL TO DAVID GO AND YAHWEH HE WILL BE WITH YOU
37 David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
“Go,” said Saul “and may the LORD be with you.”
38 AND HE CLOTHED SAUL <OBJ.> DAVID GARMENTS HIS AND HE PUT A HELMET OF BRONZE ON HEAD HIS AND HE CLOTHED <OBJ.> HIM BODY ARMOR
David Slays Goliath
38 Then Saul clothed David in his own tunic, put a bronze helmet on his head, and dressed him in armor.
39 AND HE GIRDED DAVID <OBJ.> SWORD HIS <FROM> OVER <TO> GARMENTS HIS AND HE FELL SHORT TO WALK FOR NOT HE HAD PUT TO [THE] TEST AND HE SAID DAVID TO SAUL NOT I WILL BE ABLE TO WALK IN THESE [THINGS] FOR NOT I HAVE PUT TO [THE] TEST AND HE REMOVED THEM DAVID FROM ON <THE> HIMSELF
39 David strapped his sword over the tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them.
“I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
40 AND HE TOOK STICK HIS IN HAND HIS AND HE CHOSE FOR <THE> HIMSELF FIVE SMOOTH [ONES] OF STONES FROM THE WADI AND HE PUT <OBJ.> THEM IN [THE] BAG OF <THE> SHEPHERDS WHICH [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND IN THE POUCH AND SLING HIS [WAS] IN HAND HIS AND HE DREW NEAR TO THE PHILISTINE
40 And David took his staff in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag. And with his sling in hand, he approached the Philistine.
41 AND HE CAME THE PHILISTINE COMING AND APPROACHING TO DAVID AND THE MAN [THE] BEARER OF THE BODY SHIELD [WAS] <TO> BEFORE HIM
41 Now the Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer before him.
42 AND HE LOOKED THE PHILISTINE AND HE SAW <OBJ.> DAVID AND HE DESPISED HIM FOR HE WAS A YOUTH AND RED WITH HANDSOME OF APPEARANCE
42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him because he was just a boy, ruddy and handsome.
43 AND HE SAID THE PHILISTINE TO DAVID ¿ A DOG [AM] I THAT YOU [ARE] COMING AGAINST ME WITH <THE> STICKS AND HE CURSED THE PHILISTINE <OBJ.> DAVID BY GODS HIS
43 “Am I a dog,” he said to David, “that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 AND HE SAID THE PHILISTINE TO DAVID COME ! TO ME SO LET ME GIVE <OBJ.> FLESH YOUR TO [THE] BIRD[S] OF THE HEAVENS AND TO [THE] ANIMAL[S] OF THE FIELD
44 “Come here,” he called to David, “and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
45 AND HE SAID DAVID TO THE PHILISTINE YOU [ARE] COMING AGAINST ME WITH SWORD AND WITH SPEAR AND WITH JAVELIN AND I [AM] COMING AGAINST YOU IN [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF [THE] BATTLE LINES OF ISRAEL WHOM YOU HAVE DEFIED
45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46 THE DAY <THE> THIS HE WILL DELIVER UP YOU YAHWEH IN HAND MY AND I WILL STRIKE DOWN YOU AND I WILL REMOVE <OBJ.> HEAD YOUR FROM ON <THE> YOU AND I WILL GIVE [THE] CORPSE[S] OF [THE] ARMY OF [THE] PHILISTINES THE DAY <THE> THIS TO [THE] BIRD[S] OF THE HEAVENS AND TO [THE] ANIMAL[S] OF THE EARTH SO THEY MAY KNOW ALL THE EARTH THAT THERE A GOD [BELONGS] TO ISRAEL
46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head and give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
47 SO THEY MAY KNOW ALL THE ASSEMBLY <THE> THIS THAT NOT BY SWORD AND BY SPEAR HE SAVES YAHWEH FOR [BELONGS] TO YAHWEH THE BATTLE AND HE WILL GIVE <OBJ.> YOU IN HAND OUR
47 And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
48 AND IT WAS THAT HE AROSE THE PHILISTINE AND HE CAME AND HE DREW NEAR TO MEET DAVID AND HE HURRIED DAVID AND HE RAN THE BATTLE LINE TO MEET THE PHILISTINE
48 As the Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
49 AND HE SENT DAVID <OBJ.> HAND HIS INTO THE BAG AND HE TOOK FROM THERE A STONE AND HE SLUNG [IT] AND HE STRUCK <OBJ.> THE PHILISTINE TO FOREHEAD HIS AND IT SANK THE STONE IN FOREHEAD HIS AND HE FELL ON FACE HIS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS
49 Then David reached into his bag, took out a stone, and slung it, striking the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 AND HE WAS STRONG DAVID MORE THAN THE PHILISTINE WITH THE SLING AND WITH THE STONE AND HE STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> THE PHILISTINE AND HE KILLED HIM AND [WAS] A SWORD THERE NOT IN [THE] HAND OF DAVID
50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
51 AND HE RAN DAVID AND HE STOOD TO THE PHILISTINE AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> SWORD HIS AND HE DREW OUT IT FROM SHEATH ITS AND HE KILLED HIM AND HE CUT OFF WITH <THE> IT <OBJ.> HEAD HIS AND THEY SAW THE PHILISTINES THAT HE HAD DIED MIGHTY [MAN] THEIR AND THEY FLED
51 David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its sheath and killed him, and he cut off his head with the sword.
When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
52 AND THEY AROSE [THE] MEN OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH AND THEY SHOUTED A WAR CRY AND THEY PURSUED <OBJ.> THE PHILISTINES UNTIL COMING YOU [TO] GATH AND TO [THE] GATES OF EKRON AND THEY FELL [THOSE] SLAIN OF [THE] PHILISTINES ON [THE] WAY OF SHAARAIM AND TO GATH AND TO EKRON
52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. And the bodies of the Philistines were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.
53 AND THEY RETURNED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM HOTLY PURSUING AFTER [THE] PHILISTINES AND THEY PLUNDERED <OBJ.> CAMPS THEIR
53 When the Israelites returned from their pursuit of the Philistines, they plundered their camps.
54 AND HE TOOK DAVID <OBJ.> [THE] HEAD OF THE PHILISTINE AND HE BROUGHT IT JERUSALEM AND <OBJ.> WEAPONS HIS HE PUT IN OWN TENT HIS
54 David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put Goliath’s weapons in his own tent.
55 AND JUST AS SAW SAUL <OBJ.> DAVID GOING OUT TO MEET THE PHILISTINE HE SAID TO ABNER [THE] COMMANDER OF THE ARMY SON OF WHOM? THIS [IS] THE YOUTH O ABNER AND HE SAID ABNER [BY] [THE] LIFE OF SELF YOUR O KING IF I KNEW
55 As Saul had watched David going out to confront the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this young man?”
“As surely as you live, O king,” Abner replied, “I do not know.”
56 AND HE SAID THE KING ASK YOU SON OF WHOM? THIS [IS] THE YOUTH
56 “Find out whose son this young man is!” said the king.
57 AND JUST AS RETURNED DAVID FROM STRIKING DOWN <OBJ.> THE PHILISTINE AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> HIM ABNER AND HE BROUGHT HIM <TO> BEFORE SAUL AND [THE] HEAD OF THE PHILISTINE [WAS] IN HAND HIS
57 So when David returned from killing the Philistine, still holding his head in his hand, Abner took him and brought him before Saul.
58 AND HE SAID TO HIM SAUL SON OF WHOM? [ARE] YOU O YOUTH AND HE SAID DAVID [THE] SON OF SERVANT YOUR JESSE [THE] BETH- <THE> -LEHEMITE
58 “Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul.
“I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem,” David replied.
