15LACKING OF MADMEN [AM] I? THAT YOU HAVE BROUGHT <OBJ.> THIS ONE TO BEHAVE LIKE A MADMAN ON ME ¿ THIS ONE WILL HE COME INTO HOUSE MY 15Am I in need of madmen, that you have brought this man to rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”
1AND HE WENT DAVID FROM THERE AND HE ESCAPED TO [THE] CAVE OF ADULLAM AND THEY HEARD BROTHERS HIS AND ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER HIS AND THEY WENT DOWN TO HIM THERE TOWARDS David Flees to Adullam and Mizpeh (Psalm 57:1–11; Psalm 142:1–7) 1So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.
2AND THEY GATHERED TOGETHER TO HIM EVERY MAN OF DISTRESS AND EVERY MAN WHOM [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM A CREDITOR AND EVERY MAN BITTER OF SOUL AND HE BECAME OVER THEM <INTO> A COMMANDER AND THEY WERE WITH HIM ABOUT FOUR HUNDRED<S> MAN 2And all who were distressed or indebted or discontented rallied around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.
3AND HE WENT DAVID FROM THERE MIZPAH OF MOAB AND HE SAID TO [THE] KING OF MOAB LET HIM GO OUT PLEASE FATHER MY AND MOTHER MY WITH YOU UNTIL THAT I WILL KNOW WHAT? WILL HE DO FOR <THE> ME GOD 3From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab, where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay*NoteCloseSyriac and Vulgate; Hebrew go forth with you until I learn what God will do for me.”
4AND HE LED THEM WITH [THE] PRESENCE OF [THE] KING OF MOAB AND THEY REMAINED WITH HIM ALL [THE] DAYS OF [THE] BEING OF DAVID IN THE STRONGHOLD 4So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.
5AND HE SAID GAD THE PROPHET TO DAVID NOT YOU MUST REMAIN IN THE STRONGHOLD GO AND YOU WILL GO FOR <THE> YOURSELF [THE] LAND OF JUDAH AND HE WENT DAVID AND HE CAME [THE] FOREST OF HERETH 5Then the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Depart and go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
6AND HE HEARD SAUL THAT HE WAS KNOWN DAVID AND [THE] MEN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND SAUL [WAS] SITTING AT <THE> GIBEAH UNDER THE TAMARISK TREE AT THE HIGH PLACE AND SPEAR HIS [WAS] IN HAND HIS AND ALL SERVANTS HIS [WERE] STANDING WITH HIM Saul Slays the Priests of Nob (Psalm 52:1–9) 6Soon Saul learned that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was sitting under the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with his spear in hand and all his servants standing around him.
7AND HE SAID SAUL TO SERVANTS HIS WHO WERE STANDING WITH HIM LISTEN PLEASE O BEN- JAMINITES ALSO? TO ALL OF YOU WILL HE GIVE [THE] SON OF JESSE FIELDS AND VINEYARDS <TO> ALL OF YOU WILL HE APPOINT COMMANDERS OF THOUSANDS AND COMMANDERS OF HUNDREDS 7Then Saul said to his servants, “Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the son of Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you commanders of thousands or hundreds?
8FOR YOU HAVE CONSPIRED ALL OF YOU ON ME AND THERE NOT [IS ONE WHO] OPENS <OBJ.> EAR MY WHEN MADE SON MY WITH [THE] SON OF JESSE AND NOT [WAS] FEELING PAIN ANY OF <THE> YOU ON ME AND OPENING <OBJ.> EAR MY THAT HE HAS RAISED UP SON MY <OBJ.> SERVANT MY ON ME TO AN AMBUSHER AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 8Is that why all of you have conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of Jesse. Not one of you has shown concern for me or revealed to me that my son has stirred up my own servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case today
9AND HE ANSWERED DOEG THE EDOMITE AND HE [WAS] STANDING WITH [THE] SERVANTS OF SAUL AND HE SAID I SAW <OBJ.> [THE] SON OF JESSE COMING NOB TOWARDS TO AHIMELECH [THE] SON OF AHITUB 9But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself with Saul’s servants, answered: “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.
10AND HE ENQUIRED FOR <THE> HIM BY YAHWEH AND FOOD HE GAVE TO <THE> HIM AND <OBJ.> [THE] SWORD OF GOLIATH THE PHILISTINE HE GAVE TO <THE> HIM 10Ahimelech inquired of the LORD for him and gave him provisions. He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11AND HE SENT THE KING TO SUMMON <OBJ.> AHIMELECH [THE] SON OF AHITUB THE PRIEST AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER HIS THE PRIESTS WHO [WERE] AT NOB AND THEY CAME ALL OF THEM TO THE KING 11Then the king sent messengers to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests at Nob. And all of them came to the king.
12AND HE SAID SAUL LISTEN PLEASE O SON OF AHITUB AND HE SAID HERE [AM] I O LORD MY 12“Listen now, son of Ahitub,” said Saul. “Here I am, my lord,” he replied.
13AND HE SAID TO HIM SAUL <TO> WHY? HAVE YOU CONSPIRED ON ME YOU AND [THE] SON OF JESSE WHEN GIVING YOU TO <THE> HIM BREAD AND A SWORD AND [YOU] ENQUIRED FOR <THE> HIM BY GOD TO RISE UP AGAINST ME TO AN AMBUSHER AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 13And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up against me to lie in wait, as he is doing today
14AND HE ANSWERED AHIMELECH <OBJ.> THE KING AND HE SAID AND WHO? AMONG ALL SERVANTS YOUR [IS] LIKE DAVID FAITHFUL AND [THE] SON-IN-LAW OF THE KING AND [ONE WHO] TURNS ASIDE TO BODYGUARD YOUR AND HONORED IN HOUSEHOLD YOUR 14Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s son-in-law, the captain of your bodyguard and honored in your house?
15THIS DAY DID I BEGIN? TO ENQUIRE FOR <THE> HIM BY GOD FAR BE IT TO <THE> ME MAY NOT HE PUT THE KING AGAINST SERVANT HIS ANYTHING AGAINST ALL [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER MY FOR NOT HE KNEW SERVANT YOUR IN ALL THIS ANYTHING SMALL OR GREAT 15Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant knew nothing of this whole affair— not in part or in whole.”
16AND HE SAID THE KING CERTAINLY <TO DIE> YOU WILL DIE O AHIMELECH YOU AND ALL [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER YOUR 16But the king replied, “You will surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house!”
17AND HE SAID THE KING TO THE RUNNERS WHO WERE STANDING WITH HIM TURN ROUND AND PUT TO DEATH [THE] PRIESTS OF YAHWEH FOR ALSO HAND THEIR [IS] WITH DAVID AND FOR THEY KNEW THAT [WAS] FLEEING HE AND NOT THEY UNCOVERED <OBJ.> EAR MY AND NOT THEY WERE WILLING [THE] SERVANTS OF THE KING TO STRETCH OUT <OBJ.> HAND THEIR TO FALL ON [THE] PRIESTS OF YAHWEH 17Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
18AND HE SAID THE KING TO DOEG TURN ROUND YOU AND FALL ON THE PRIESTS AND HE TURNED ROUND DOEG THE EDOMITE AND HE FELL HE ON THE PRIESTS AND HE KILLED ON THE DAY <THE> THAT EIGHTY AND FIVE MAN [WHO] CARRIED AN EPHOD OF LINEN 18So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests!” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests himself. On that day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.
19AND <OBJ.> NOB [THE] CITY OF THE PRIESTS HE STRUCK TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD FROM MAN AND UNTO WOMAN FROM CHILD AND UNTO SUCKLING-CHILD AND OX[EN] AND DONKEY[S] AND SHEEP TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD 19He also put to the sword Nob, the city of the priests, with its men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.
20AND HE ESCAPED A SON ONE OF AHIMELECH [THE] SON OF AHITUB AND NAME HIS [WAS] ABIATHAR AND HE FLED AFTER DAVID 20But one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled to David.
21AND HE TOLD ABIATHAR TO DAVID THAT HE HAD KILLED SAUL <OBJ.> [THE] PRIESTS OF YAHWEH 21And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.
22AND HE SAID DAVID TO ABIATHAR I KNEW ON THE DAY <THE> THAT THAT [WAS] THERE DOEG THE EDOMITE THAT CERTAINLY <TO TELL> HE WILL TELL TO SAUL I I HAVE TURNED IN EVERY LIFE OF [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER YOUR 22Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the Edomite was there that day, and that he was sure to tell Saul. I myself am responsible for the lives of everyone in your father’s house.
23REMAIN! WITH ME MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FOR [THE ONE] WHO HE SEEKS <OBJ.> LIFE MY HE SEEKS <OBJ.> LIFE YOUR FOR [ARE] IN GOOD CARE YOU WITH ME 23Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life is seeking mine as well. You will be safe with me.”
