11AND HE ROSE EARLY DAVID HE AND MEN HIS TO GO IN THE MORNING TO RETURN TO [THE] LAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND [THE] PHILISTINES THEY WENT UP JEZREEL 11So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
1AND IT WAS WHEN CAME DAVID AND MEN HIS ZIKLAG ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD AND [THE] AMALEKITE[S] THEY HAD MADE A RAID AGAINST [THE] NEGEV AND AGAINST ZIKLAG AND THEY HAD STRUCK <OBJ.> ZIKLAG AND THEY HAD BURNED <OBJ.> IT WITH <THE> FIRE The Amalekites Raid Ziklag 1On the third day David and his men arrived in Ziklag, and the Amalekites had raided the Negev attacked Ziklag, and burned it down.
2AND THEY HAD TAKEN CAPTIVE <OBJ.> THE WOMEN WHO [WERE] IN <THE> IT FROM SMALL AND UNTO GREAT NOT THEY HAD KILLED ANYONE AND THEY HAD DRIVEN THEM AWAY AND THEY HAD GONE TO WAY THEIR 2They had taken captive the women and all*NoteCloseLXX; Hebrew does not include and all. who were there, both young and old. They had not killed anyone, but had carried them off as they went on their way.
3AND HE CAME DAVID AND MEN HIS TO THE CITY AND THERE! [IT WAS] BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE AND WIVES THEIR AND SONS THEIR AND DAUGHTERS THEIR THEY HAD BEEN TAKEN CAPTIVE 3When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.
4AND HE LIFTED UP DAVID AND THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM <OBJ.> VOICE THEIR AND THEY WEPT UNTIL THAT NOT [WAS] IN <THE> THEM STRENGTH TO WEEP 4So David and the troops with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no strength left to weep.
5AND [THE] TWO [THE] WIVES OF DAVID THEY HAD BEEN TAKEN CAPTIVE AHINOAM THE JEZREELITE [WOMAN] AND ABIGAIL [THE] WIFE OF NABAL THE CARMELITE 5David’s two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel, had been taken captive.
6AND IT WAS DISTRESS TO DAVID EXCEEDINGLY FOR THEY SAID THE PEOPLE TO STONE HIM FOR IT WAS BITTER [THE] SOUL OF ALL THE PEOPLE EVERYONE ON SONS HIS AND ON DAUGHTERS HIS AND HE STRENGTHENED HIMSELF DAVID IN YAHWEH GOD HIS 6And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of every man grieved for his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
7AND HE SAID DAVID TO ABIATHAR THE PRIEST [THE] SON OF AHIMELECH BRING NEAR! PLEASE TO <THE> ME THE EPHOD AND HE BROUGHT NEAR ABIATHAR <OBJ.> THE EPHOD TO DAVID David Destroys the Amalekites 7Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought it to him,
8AND HE ENQUIRED DAVID BY YAHWEH <TO> SAYING WILL I PURSUE? AFTER THE MARAUDING BAND <THE> THIS ¿ WILL I OVERTAKE IT AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM PURSUE FOR CERTAINLY <TO OVERTAKE> YOU WILL OVERTAKE [IT] AND CERTAINLY <TO RESCUE> YOU WILL RESCUE [THEM] 8and David inquired of the LORD “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them the LORD replied “for you will surely overtake them and rescue the captives
9AND HE WENT DAVID HE AND SIX HUNDRED<S> MAN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND THEY CAME TO [THE] WADI OF <THE> BESOR AND THOSE [WHO] WERE LEFT BEHIND THEY REMAINED 9So David and his six hundred men went to the Brook of Besor, where some stayed behind
10AND HE PURSUED DAVID HE AND FOUR HUNDRED<S> MAN AND THEY REMAINED TWO HUNDRED MAN WHO THEY WERE [TOO] EXHAUSTED FOR PASSING OVER <OBJ.> [THE] WADI OF <THE> BESOR 10because two hundred men were too exhausted to cross the brook. But David and four hundred men continued in pursuit.
11AND THEY FOUND A MAN EGYPTIAN IN THE OPEN COUNTRY AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> HIM TO DAVID AND THEY GAVE TO <THE> HIM BREAD AND HE ATE AND THEY GAVE TO DRINK HIM WATER 11Now his men found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David. They gave the man water to drink and food to eat—
12AND THEY GAVE TO <THE> HIM A SLICE OF FIG CAKE AND TWO BUNCHES OF RAISINS AND HE ATE AND IT RETURNED SPIRIT HIS TO HIM FOR NOT HE HAD EATEN FOOD AND NOT HE HAD DRUNK WATER THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS 12a piece of a fig cake and two clusters of raisins. So he ate and was revived for he had not had any food or water for three days and three nights.
13AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM DAVID [BELONG] TO WHOM? YOU AND WHERE? FROM THIS [ARE] YOU AND HE SAID [AM] A YOUNG MAN EGYPTIAN I A SLAVE OF A MAN AMALEKITE AND HE ABANDONED ME MASTER MY IF I WAS SICK THE DAY <THE> THREE 13Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.
14WE WE HAD MADE A RAID [THE] NEGEV OF THE KERETHITE[S] AND ON [THAT] WHICH [BELONGS] TO JUDAH AND ON [THE] NEGEV OF CALEB AND <OBJ.> ZIKLAG WE HAD BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE 14We raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of Caleb, and we burned down Ziklag.”
15AND HE SAID TO HIM DAVID ¿ WILL YOU TAKE DOWN ME TO THE MARAUDING BAND <THE> THIS AND HE SAID SWEAR! TO <THE> ME BY GOD IF YOU WILL KILL ME AND IF YOU WILL DELIVER UP ME IN [THE] HAND OF MASTER MY AND I WILL TAKE DOWN YOU TO THE MARAUDING BAND <THE> THIS 15“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked And the man replied, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them
16AND HE TOOK DOWN HIM AND THERE! [THEY WERE] SPREAD OUT OVER [THE] FACE OF ALL THE LAND EATING AND DRINKING AND CELEBRATING IN ALL THE PLUNDER <THE> GREAT WHICH THEY HAD TAKEN FROM [THE] LAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND FROM [THE] LAND OF JUDAH 16So he led David down, and there were the Amalekites spread out over all the land, eating, drinking, and celebrating the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.
17AND HE STRUCK DOWN THEM DAVID FROM THE TWILIGHT AND UNTIL THE EVENING OF NEXT DAY THEIR AND NOT HE ESCAPED OF <THE> THEM ANYONE THAT EXCEPT FOUR HUNDRED<S> MAN YOUNG MAN WHO THEY RODE ON THE CAMELS AND THEY FLED 17And David struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man escaped, except four hundred young men who fled, riding off on camels.
18AND HE RESCUED DAVID <OBJ.> ALL THAT THEY HAD TAKEN AMALEK AND <OBJ.> [THE] TWO WIVES HIS HE RESCUED DAVID 18So David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives.
19AND NOT IT WAS MISSING TO <THE> THEM FROM THE SMALL AND UNTO THE GREAT AND UNTO SONS AND DAUGHTERS AND FROM [THE] BOOTY AND UNTO ALL THAT THEY HAD TAKEN FOR <THE> THEMSELVES <THE> EVERYTHING HE BROUGHT BACK DAVID 19Nothing was missing young or old, son or daughter, or any of the plunder the Amalekites had taken. David brought everything back.
20AND HE TOOK DAVID <OBJ.> ALL THE SHEEP AND THE CATTLE THEY DROVE [THEM] <TO> BEFORE THE LIVESTOCK <THE> THAT AND THEY SAID THIS [IS] [THE] BOOTY OF DAVID 20And he took all the flocks and herds, which his men drove ahead of the other livestock, calling out, “This is David’s plunder!”
21AND HE CAME DAVID TO TWO HUNDRED THE MEN WHO THEY HAD BEEN [TOO] EXHAUSTED FOR GOING AFTER DAVID AND THEY HAD LEFT BEHIND THEM AT [THE] WADI OF <THE> BESOR AND THEY WENT OUT TO MEET DAVID AND TO MEET THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM AND HE APPROACHED DAVID <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE AND HE ASKED OF <THE> THEM TO WELFARE The Spoils Are Divided 21When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops with him. As David approached the men, he greeted them,
22AND HE ANSWERED EVERY MAN EVIL AND WORTHLESSNESS FROM THE MEN WHO THEY HAD GONE WITH DAVID AND THEY SAID BECAUSE THAT NOT THEY WENT WITH ME NOT WE WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM ANY OF THE BOOTY WHICH WE HAVE RECOVERED THAT EXCEPT EVERYONE <OBJ.> WIFE HIS AND <OBJ.> CHILDREN HIS SO THEY MAY LEAD [THEM] AWAY AND THEY MAY GO 22but all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
23AND HE SAID DAVID NOT YOU MUST DO THUS O BROTHERS MY <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE HAS GIVEN YAHWEH TO <THE> US AND HE HAS KEPT <OBJ.> US AND HE HAS GIVEN <OBJ.> THE MARAUDING BAND WHICH CAME ON US IN HAND OUR 23But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
24AND WHO? WILL HE LISTEN TO <THE> YOU TO THE MATTER <THE> THIS FOR LIKE [THE] SHARE OF THE [ONE WHO] WENT DOWN IN THE BATTLE AND LIKE [THE] SHARE OF THE [ONE WHO] REMAINED WITH THE BAGGAGE<S> ALIKE THEY WILL SHARE 24Who will listen to your proposal? The share of the one who went to battle will match the share of the one who stayed with the supplies. They will share alike.”
25AND IT WAS FROM THE DAY <THE> THAT AND ON -WARDS AND HE MADE IT INTO A STATUTE AND INTO A JUDGMENT FOR ISRAEL UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 25And so it has been from that day forward. David established this statute and ordinance for Israel to this very day.
26AND HE CAME DAVID TO ZIKLAG AND HE SENT SOME OF THE BOOTY TO [THE] ELDERS OF JUDAH TO FRIEND HIS <TO> SAYING HERE! [IS] FOR <THE> YOU A BLESSING FROM [THE] BOOTY OF [THE] ENEMIES OF YAHWEH 26When David arrived in Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the LORD’s enemies.”
27FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN BETH- -EL AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN RAMOTH NEGEV AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN JATTIR 27He sent gifts to those in Bethel, Ramoth Negev, and Jattir;
28AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN AROER AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN SIPHMOTH AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN ESHTEMOA 28to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, and Eshtemoa;
29AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN RACAL AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN [THE] CITIES OF THE JERAHMEELITE[S] AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN [THE] CITIES OF THE KENITE[S] 29to those in Racal and in the cities of the Jerahmeelites and Kenites;
30AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN HORMAH AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN BOR ASHAN AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN ATHACH 30to those in Hormah, Bor-ashan, and Athach;
31AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [WERE] IN HEBRON AND FOR ALL THE PLACES WHERE HE HAD GONE ABOUT THERE DAVID HE AND MEN HIS 31and to those in Hebron and in all the places where David and his men had roamed.
