1AND [THE] PHILISTINES THEY TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND THEY BROUGHT IT FROM EBEN- <THE> -EZER ASHDOD TOWARDS The Ark Afflicts the Philistines 1After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod,
2AND THEY TOOK [THE] PHILISTINES <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> IT [THE] HOUSE OF DAGON AND THEY PLACED <OBJ.> IT BESIDE DAGON 2carried it into the temple of Dagon, and set it beside his statue.*NoteCloseLiterally set it beside Dagon
3AND THEY ROSE EARLY [THE] ASHDODITES FROM [THE] NEXT DAY AND THERE! DAGON [WAS] FALLEN TO FACE ITS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS <TO> BEFORE [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> DAGON AND THEY RETURNED <OBJ.> IT TO PLACE ITS 3When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and returned him to his place.
4AND THEY ROSE EARLY IN THE MORNING FROM [THE] NEXT DAY AND THERE! DAGON [WAS] FALLEN TO FACE ITS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS <TO> BEFORE [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH AND [THE] HEAD OF DAGON AND [THE] TWO [THE] PALMS OF HANDS ITS WERE CUT OFF TO THE THRESHOLD ONLY DAGON IT REMAINED ON IT 4But when they got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the threshold. Only the torso remained.
5THERE- -FORE NOT THEY TREAD [THE] PRIESTS OF DAGON AND ALL THOSE [WHO] GO [THE] HOUSE OF DAGON ON [THE] THRESHOLD OF DAGON IN ASHDOD UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 5That is why, to this day, the priests of Dagon and all who enter the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on the threshold.
6AND IT WAS HEAVY [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH AGAINST THE ASHDODITES AND HE DEVASTATED THEM AND HE STRUCK <OBJ.> THEM WITH <THE> TUMORS <OBJ.> ASHDOD AND <OBJ.> TERRITORIES ITS 6Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity, ravaging them and afflicting them with tumors.*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX and Vulgate include And rats appeared in their land, and death and destruction were throughout the city.
7AND THEY SAW [THE] PEOPLE OF ASHDOD THAT SO AND THEY SAID NOT IT WILL REMAIN [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL WITH US FOR IT IS HARD HAND HIS ON US AND ON DAGON GOD OUR 7And when the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy upon us and upon our god Dagon.”
8AND THEY SENT AND THEY GATHERED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] RULERS OF [THE] PHILISTINES TO THEM AND THEY SAID WHAT? WILL WE DO TO [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND THEY SAID GATH LET IT GO ROUND [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND THEY BROUGHT ROUND <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 8So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
9AND IT WAS AFTER THEY HAD BROUGHT ROUND <OBJ.> IT AND IT WAS [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH ON THE CITY PANIC GREAT EXCEEDINGLY AND HE STRUCK <OBJ.> [THE] MEN OF THE CITY FROM YOUNG AND UNTO [THE] OLD AND THEY BROKE OUT TO <THE> THEM TUMORS 9But after they had moved the ark to Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
10AND THEY SENT <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD EKRON AND IT WAS WHEN WENT [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD EKRON AND THEY CRIED OUT THE EKRONITES <TO> SAYING THEY HAVE BROUGHT ROUND TO ME <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL TO KILL ME AND <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY 10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron, but as it arrived the Ekronites cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
11AND THEY SENT AND THEY GATHERED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] RULERS OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND THEY SAID SEND AWAY <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL SO MAY IT RETURN TO OWN PLACE ITS AND NOT IT WILL KILL <OBJ.> ME AND <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY FOR IT WAS PANIC OF DEATH IN ALL THE CITY IT WAS HEAVY EXCEEDINGLY [THE] HAND OF <THE> GOD THERE 11Then the Ekronites called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not*NoteCloseOr He will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had pervaded the city; the hand of God was very heavy upon it.
12AND THE MEN WHO NOT THEY DIED THEY WERE STRUCK WITH THE TUMORS AND IT WENT UP [THE] CRY FOR HELP OF THE CITY THE HEAVENS 12Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
