21AND HE REPEATED YAHWEH TO APPEAR AT SHILOH FOR HE REVEALED HIMSELF YAHWEH TO SAMUEL AT SHILOH BY [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH 21And the LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.
1AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF SAMUEL TO ALL ISRAEL AND IT WENT OUT ISRAEL TO MEET [THE] PHILISTINES FOR <THE> BATTLE AND THEY ENCAMPED AT <THE> EBEN- -EZER AND [THE] PHILISTINES THEY ENCAMPED AT APHEK The Philistines Capture the Ark 1Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
2AND THEY DEPLOYED [THE] PHILISTINES TO MEET ISRAEL AND IT SPREAD OUT THE BATTLE AND IT WAS DEFEATED ISRAEL <TO> BEFORE [THE] PHILISTINES AND THEY STRUCK DOWN IN THE BATTLE LINE IN THE FIELD ABOUT FOUR THOUSAND<S> MAN 2The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
3AND IT CAME THE PEOPLE INTO THE CAMP AND THEY SAID [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL <TO> WHY? HAS HE DEFEATED US YAHWEH THIS DAY <TO> BEFORE [THE] PHILISTINES LET US BRING TO OURSELVES FROM SHILOH <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] COVENANT OF YAHWEH SO IT MAY COME IN MIDST OUR SO IT MAY DELIVER US FROM [THE] HAND OF ENEMIES OUR 3When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that it may go*NoteCloseOr He may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4AND IT SENT THE PEOPLE SHILOH AND THEY BROUGHT FROM THERE <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] COVENANT OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS [WHO] SITS THE CHERUBIM AND [WERE] THERE [THE] TWO [THE] SONS OF ELI WITH [THE] ARK OF [THE] COVENANT OF <THE> GOD HOPHNI AND PHINEHAS 4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5AND IT WAS WHEN CAME [THE] ARK OF [THE] COVENANT OF YAHWEH INTO THE CAMP AND THEY SHOUTED ALL ISRAEL A SHOUT GREAT AND IT WAS STIRRED THE GROUND 5When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great shout that the ground shook.
6AND THEY HEARD [THE] PHILISTINES <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF THE SHOUT AND THEY SAID WHAT? [IS] [THE] SOUND OF THE SHOUT <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS IN [THE] CAMP OF THE HEBREWS AND THEY KNEW THAT [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH IT HAD COME INTO THE CAMP 6On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
7AND THEY WERE AFRAID THE PHILISTINES FOR THEY SAID HE HAS COME A GOD INTO THE CAMP AND THEY SAID WOE! TO <THE> US FOR NOT IT HAS BEEN LIKE THIS YESTERDAY THREE DAYS AGO 7the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered*NoteCloseOr A god has entered their camp!” they said. “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
8WOE! TO <THE> US WHO? WILL HE DELIVER US FROM [THE] HAND OF THE GODS <THE> MIGHTY <THE> THESE THESE THEY [ARE] THE GODS WHO STRUCK <OBJ.> EGYPT WITH EVERY PLAGUE IN THE WILDERNESS 8Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
9SHOW YOURSELVES STRONG AND BECOME <INTO> MEN O PHILISTINES LEST YOU SHOULD SERVE <TO> THE HEBREWS JUST AS THEY HAVE SERVED <TO> <THE> YOU AND YOU WILL BECOME <INTO> MEN AND YOU WILL FIGHT 9Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
10AND THEY FOUGHT [THE] PHILISTINES AND IT WAS DEFEATED ISRAEL AND THEY FLED EACH MAN TO OWN TENTS HIS AND IT WAS THE SLAUGHTER GREAT EXCEEDINGLY AND HE FELL OF ISRAEL THIRTY THOUSAND FOOT SOLDIER[S] 10So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great— thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
11AND [THE] ARK OF GOD IT WAS TAKEN AND [THE] TWO [THE] SONS OF ELI THEY DIED HOPHNI AND PHINEHAS 11The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
12AND HE RAN [THE] MAN OF BENJAMIN FROM THE BATTLE LINE AND HE CAME SHILOH ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND GARMENTS HIS [WERE] TORN AND EARTH [WAS] ON HEAD HIS The Death of Eli 12That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to Shiloh, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.
13AND HE CAME AND THERE! ELI [WAS] SITTING ON THE SEAT [THE] SIDE OF [THE] ROAD WATCHING FOR IT WAS HEART HIS TREMBLING ON [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND THE MAN HE CAME TO TELL IN THE CITY AND IT CRIED OUT ALL THE CITY 13When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city cried out.
14AND HE HEARD ELI <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF THE OUTCRY AND HE SAID WHAT? [IS] [THE] SOUND OF THE UPROAR <THE> THIS AND THE MAN HE HURRIED AND HE CAME AND HE TOLD TO ELI 14Eli heard the outcry and asked, “Why this commotion?” So the man hurried over and reported to Eli.
15AND ELI [WAS] A SON OF NINETY AND EIGHT YEAR[S] AND EYES HIS IT WAS SET AND NOT HE WAS ABLE TO SEE 15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his gaze was fixed because he could not see.
16AND HE SAID THE MAN TO ELI I [AM] THE [ONE WHO] COMES FROM THE BATTLE LINE AND I FROM THE BATTLE LINE I HAVE FLED THIS DAY AND HE SAID WHAT? WAS IT THE WORD O SON MY 16“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to Eli. “I fled from there today “What happened, my son?” Eli asked.
17AND HE ANSWERED THE BEARER OF NEWS AND HE SAID IT HAS FLED ISRAEL <TO> BEFORE [THE] PHILISTINES AND ALSO A SLAUGHTER GREAT IT HAS BEEN AMONG THE PEOPLE AND ALSO [THE] TWO SONS YOUR THEY HAVE DIED HOPHNI AND PHINEHAS AND [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD IT HAS BEEN TAKEN 17The messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
18AND IT WAS WHEN BROUGHT TO REMEMBRANCE HE <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND HE FELL FROM ON THE SEAT BACKWARDS BEHIND [THE] SIDE OF THE GATE AND IT WAS BROKEN NECK HIS AND HE DIED FOR HE WAS OLD THE MAN AND HEAVY AND HE HE HAD JUDGED <OBJ.> ISRAEL FORTY YEAR[S] 18As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And Eli had judged*NoteCloseOr governed or led Israel forty years.
19AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW HIS [THE] WIFE OF PHINEHAS [WAS] PREGNANT TO GIVE BIRTH AND SHE HEARD <OBJ.> THE REPORT CONCERNING [THE] BEING TAKEN OF [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND HE HAD DIED FATHER-IN-LAW HER AND HUSBAND HER AND SHE BOWED DOWN AND SHE GAVE BIRTH FOR THEY TURNED ON HER PANGS HER 19Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
20AND ABOUT [THE] TIME OF DYING SHE AND THEY SPOKE THOSE [WHO] WERE STANDING OVER HER MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FOR A SON YOU HAVE BORNE AND NOT SHE ANSWERED AND NOT SHE SET HEART HER 20As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond or pay any heed.
21AND SHE CALLED <TO> THE LAD I- -CHABOD <TO> SAYING IT HAS GONE INTO EXILE GLORY FROM ISRAEL BECAUSE OF [THE] BEING TAKEN OF [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND BECAUSE OF FATHER-IN-LAW HER AND HUSBAND HER 21And she named the boy Ichabod,*NoteCloseIchabod means no glory. saying, “The glory has departed*NoteCloseOr gone into exile; also in verse 22 from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
22AND SHE SAID IT HAS GONE INTO EXILE GLORY FROM ISRAEL FOR IT HAS BEEN TAKEN [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD 22“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
