22AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SAMUEL LISTEN TO VOICE THEIR AND YOU WILL MAKE KING FOR <THE> THEM A KING AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL GO EACH MAN TO OWN CITY HIS 22“Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “Everyone must go back to his city.”
1AND HE WAS A MAN FROM BENJAMIN AND NAME HIS [WAS] KISH [THE] SON OF ABIEL [THE] SON OF ZEROR [THE] SON OF BECORATH [THE] SON OF APHIAH A SON OF A MAN A JAMINITE A MIGHTY [MAN] OF WEALTH Saul Chosen as King 1Now there was a Benjamite, a powerful man, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin.
2AND TO <THE> HIM HE BELONGED A SON AND NAME HIS [WAS] SAUL A YOUNG MAN AND GOOD AND NOT A MAN FROM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL [WAS] GOOD MORE THAN HIM FROM SHOULDER HIS AND UP -WARDS [HE WAS] TALL MORE THAN ALL THE PEOPLE 2And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites a head taller than any of the people.
3AND THEY WERE LOST THE SHE-ASSES OF KISH [THE] FATHER OF SAUL AND HE SAID KISH TO SAUL SON HIS TAKE PLEASE WITH YOU <OBJ.> ONE FROM THE YOUNG MEN AND ARISE GO SEEK <OBJ.> THE SHE-ASSES 3One day the donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants and go look for the donkeys.”
4AND HE PASSED IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM AND HE PASSED IN [THE] LAND OF SHALISHA AND NOT THEY FOUND [THEM] AND THEY PASSED IN [THE] LAND OF SHAALIM AND THERE NOT AND HE PASSED IN [THE] LAND OF [THE] JAMINITE[S] AND NOT THEY FOUND [THEM] 4So Saul passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find the donkeys. He and the servant went through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.
5THEY THEY CAME IN [THE] LAND OF ZUPH AND SAUL HE SAID TO SERVANT HIS WHO [WAS] WITH HIM COME! SO LET US TURN BACK LEST HE SHOULD CEASE FATHER MY FROM THE SHE-ASSES AND HE WILL BE ANXIOUS TO <THE> US 5When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant “Come, let us go back, or my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”
6AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM HERE! PLEASE A MAN OF GOD [IS] IN THE CITY <THE> THIS AND THE MAN [IS] HONORED ALL THAT HE SPEAKS ACTUALLY <COME> IT COMES NOW LET US GO THERE PERHAPS HE WILL TELL TO <THE> US <OBJ.> JOURNEY OUR WHICH WE HAVE WALKED ON IT 6“Look,” said the servant “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go
7AND HE SAID SAUL TO SERVANT HIS AND HERE! WE WILL GO AND WHAT? WILL WE BRING TO THE MAN FOR THE BREAD IT HAS BEEN USED UP FROM BAGS OUR AND [IS] A GIFT THERE NOT TO BRING TO [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD WHAT? [IS] WITH US 7“If we do go,” Saul replied “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
8AND HE REPEATED THE SERVANT TO ANSWER <OBJ.> SAUL AND HE SAID HERE! [IS] FOUND IN HAND MY A FOURTH PART OF A SHEKEL OF SILVER AND I WILL GIVE [IT] TO [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD AND HE WILL TELL TO <THE> US <OBJ.> JOURNEY OUR 8The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have here in my hand a quarter shekel of silver.*NoteCloseA quarter shekel is approximately 0.1 ounces or 2.85 grams of silver. I will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.”
9<TO> BEFORE IN ISRAEL THUS HE SAID THE MAN WHEN WENT HE TO CONSULT GOD COME SO LET US GO TO THE SEER FOR TO THE PROPHET THIS DAY IT WAS CALLED <TO> BEFORE THE SEER 9(Formerly in Israel, a man on his way to inquire of God would say, “Come, let us go to the seer.” For the prophet of today was formerly called the seer.)
10AND HE SAID SAUL TO SERVANT HIS [IS] GOOD WORD YOUR COME! LET US GO AND THEY WENT TO THE CITY WHERE [WAS] THERE [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD 10“Good,” said Saul to his servant. “Come, let us go.” So they set out for the city where the man of God was.
11THEY [WERE] GOING UP ON [THE] ASCENT OF THE CITY AND THEY THEY FOUND YOUNG WOMEN COMING OUT TO DRAW WATER AND THEY SAID TO <THE> THEM ¿ [IS] THERE IN THIS [PLACE] THE SEER 11And as they were climbing the hill to the city, they met some young women coming out to draw water and asked “Is the seer here
12AND THEY ANSWERED <OBJ.> THEM AND THEY SAID THERE IS THERE! <TO> BEFORE YOU HURRY NOW FOR THIS DAY HE HAS COME TO THE CITY FOR A SACRIFICE THIS DAY [BELONGS] TO THE PEOPLE AT THE HIGH PLACE 12“Yes, he is ahead of you,” they answered. “Hurry now, for today he has come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high place.
13WHEN COME YOU THE CITY THUS YOU WILL FIND! <OBJ.> HIM <IN> BEFORE HE WILL GO UP THE HIGH PLACE TOWARDS TO EAT FOR NOT IT WILL EAT THE PEOPLE UNTIL COMES HE FOR HE HE WILL BLESS THE SACRIFICE AFTER THUS THEY WILL EAT THOSE [WHO] WERE INVITED AND NOW GO UP FOR <OBJ.> HIM AS THE DAY YOU WILL FIND! <OBJ.> HIM 13As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
14AND THEY WENT UP THE CITY THEY [WERE] COMING IN [THE] MIDST OF THE CITY AND THERE! SAMUEL [WAS] COMING OUT TO MEET THEM TO GO UP THE HIGH PLACE 14So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
15AND YAHWEH HE HAD UNCOVERED <OBJ.> [THE] EAR OF SAMUEL A DAY ONE <TO> BEFORE CAME SAUL <TO> SAYING 15Now on the day before Saul’s arrival, the LORD had revealed to Samuel,
16ABOUT <THE> THIS TIME TOMORROW I WILL SEND TO YOU A MAN FROM [THE] LAND OF BENJAMIN AND YOU WILL ANOINT HIM TO RULER OVER PEOPLE MY ISRAEL AND HE WILL DELIVER <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES FOR I HAVE SEEN <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY FOR IT HAS COME CRY OF DISTRESS ITS TO ME 16“At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to anoint him ruler over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
17AND SAMUEL HE SAW <OBJ.> SAUL AND YAHWEH HE ANSWERED HIM HERE! THE MAN WHOM I SPOKE TO YOU THIS [ONE] HE WILL RULE OVER PEOPLE MY 17When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke; he shall rule over My people.”
18AND HE APPROACHED SAUL <OBJ.> SAMUEL IN [THE] MIDDLE OF THE GATE AND HE SAID TELL! PLEASE TO <THE> ME WHERE? THIS [IS] [THE] HOUSE OF THE SEER 18Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”
19AND HE ANSWERED SAMUEL <OBJ.> SAUL AND HE SAID I [AM] THE SEER GO UP <TO> BEFORE ME THE HIGH PLACE AND YOU WILL EAT WITH ME THIS DAY AND I WILL SEND AWAY YOU IN THE MORNING AND ALL THAT [IS] IN HEART YOUR I WILL TELL TO <THE> YOU 19“I am the seer,” Samuel. replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
20AND TO THE SHE-ASSES WHICH WERE LOST OF YOU THIS DAY [THE] THREE THE DAYS MAY NOT YOU SET <OBJ.> HEART YOUR TO <THE> THEM FOR THEY HAVE BEEN FOUND AND [BELONGS] TO WHOM? EVERY <THE> DESIRABLE THING OF ISRAEL ¿ NOT TO YOU AND TO ALL [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER YOUR 20As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them, for they have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s house?”
21AND HE ANSWERED SAUL AND HE SAID ¿ NOT A BEN- JAMINITE [AM] I FROM [THE] SMALL OF [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL AND [IS] CLAN? MY THE INSIGNIFICANT OF ALL [THE] CLANS OF [THE] TRIBES OF BENJAMIN AND <TO> WHY? HAVE YOU SPOKEN TO ME ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS 21Saul replied, “Am I not a Benjamite from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of Benjamin? So why would you say such a thing to me?”
22AND HE TOOK SAMUEL <OBJ.> SAUL AND <OBJ.> SERVANT HIS AND HE BROUGHT THEM [THE] ROOM TOWARDS AND HE GAVE TO <THE> THEM A PLACE AT [THE] HEAD OF THOSE [WHO] WERE INVITED AND THEY [WERE] ABOUT THIRTY MAN 22Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited about thirty in all.
23AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO THE COOK GIVE! <OBJ.> THE PORTION WHICH I GAVE TO <THE> YOU WHICH I SAID TO YOU PUT <OBJ.> IT WITH YOU 23And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you and told you to set aside.”
24AND HE LIFTED UP THE COOK <OBJ.> THE THIGH AND THE ON IT AND HE PUT [IT] <TO> BEFORE SAUL AND HE SAID HERE! THE [PART WHICH] REMAINS SET [IT] <TO> BEFORE YOU EAT [IT] FOR TO THE APPOINTED TIME [IT WAS] KEPT FOR <THE> YOU <TO> SAYING THE PEOPLE I HAVE INVITED AND HE ATE SAUL WITH SAMUEL ON THE DAY <THE> THAT 24So the cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul dined with Samuel that day.
25AND THEY WENT DOWN FROM THE HIGH PLACE THE CITY AND HE SPOKE WITH SAUL ON THE ROOF 25And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
26AND THEY ROSE EARLY AND IT WAS WHEN CAME UP THE DAWN AND HE CALLED SAMUEL TO SAUL THE ROOF TOWARDS <TO> SAYING ARISE! SO I MAY SEND AWAY YOU AND HE AROSE SAUL AND THEY WENT OUT [THE] TWO OF THEM HE AND SAMUEL THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS 26They got up early in the morning, and just before dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul got ready, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
27THEY [WERE] GOING DOWN AT [THE] EDGE OF THE CITY AND SAMUEL HE SAID TO SAUL SAY TO THE SERVANT SO HE MAY PASS ON <TO> BEFORE US AND HE PASSED ON AND YOU REMAIN AS THE DAY SO I MAY MAKE HEAR YOU <OBJ.> [THE] WORD OF GOD 27As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I will reveal to you the word of God.” So the servant went on.
