17AND RETURN HIS [WAS] <THE> RAMAH TOWARDS FOR [WAS] THERE HOUSE HIS AND THERE HE JUDGED <OBJ.> ISRAEL AND HE BUILT THERE AN ALTAR TO YAHWEH 17Then he would return to Ramah because his home was there, and there he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.
1AND IT WAS <JUST> WHEN HE WAS OLD SAMUEL AND HE MADE <OBJ.> SONS HIS JUDGES FOR ISRAEL Israel Demands a King (Deuteronomy 17:14–20) 1When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges*NoteCloseOr governors or leaders; similarly in verses 2, 5, 6, and 20 over Israel.
2AND IT WAS [THE] NAME OF SON HIS THE FIRSTBORN JOEL AND [THE] NAME OF SECOND HIS [WAS] ABIJAH JUDGES IN BEER SHEBA 2The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second was Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.
3AND NOT THEY WALKED SONS HIS IN WAYS HIS AND THEY TURNED ASIDE AFTER <THE> UNJUST GAIN AND THEY TOOK A BRIBE AND THEY TURNED ASIDE JUSTICE 3But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside toward dishonest gain, accepting bribes and perverting justice.
4AND THEY GATHERED TOGETHER ALL [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND THEY CAME TO SAMUEL <THE> RAMAH TOWARDS 4So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.
5AND THEY SAID TO HIM HERE! YOU YOU HAVE BECOME OLD AND SONS YOUR NOT THEY HAVE WALKED IN WAYS YOUR NOW APPOINT! FOR <THE> US A KING TO JUDGE US LIKE ALL THE NATIONS 5“Look,” they said “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to judge us like all the other nations.”
6AND IT WAS DISPLEASING THE MATTER IN [THE] EYES OF SAMUEL JUST WHEN THEY SAID GIVE! TO <THE> US A KING TO JUDGE US AND HE PRAYED SAMUEL TO YAHWEH 6But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
7AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SAMUEL LISTEN TO [THE] VOICE OF THE PEOPLE TO ALL WHAT THEY WILL SAY TO YOU FOR NOT <OBJ.> YOU THEY HAVE REJECTED FOR <OBJ.> ME THEY HAVE REJECTED FROM REIGNING OVER THEM 7And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king.
8ACCORDING TO ALL THE DEEDS WHICH THEY HAVE DONE FROM [THE] DAY BROUGHT UP I <OBJ.> THEM FROM EGYPT AND UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS AND THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME AND THEY HAVE SERVED GODS OTHER SO THEY [ARE] DOING ALSO TO <THE> YOU 8Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
9AND NOW LISTEN TO VOICE THEIR NEVERTHELESS FOR CERTAINLY <TO WARN> YOU WILL WARN <IN> <THE> THEM AND YOU WILL TELL TO <THE> THEM [THE] RIGHT[S] OF THE KING WHO HE WILL REIGN OVER THEM 9Now listen to their voice; but you must solemnly warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”
10AND HE SPOKE SAMUEL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH TO THE PEOPLE WHO WERE ASKING FROM WITH <THE> HIM A KING Samuel’s Warning 10So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.
11AND HE SAID THIS IT WILL BE [THE] RIGHT[S] OF THE KING WHO HE WILL REIGN OVER YOU <OBJ.> SONS YOUR HE WILL TAKE AND HE WILL APPOINT [THEM] FOR <THE> HIMSELF IN CHARIOT[S] HIS AND AMONG HORSEMEN HIS AND THEY WILL RUN <TO> BEFORE CHARIOT HIS 11He said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them to serve his own chariots and horses, and to run in front of his chariots.
12AND TO APPOINT [THEM] FOR <THE> HIMSELF COMMANDERS OF THOUSANDS AND COMMANDERS OF FIFTIES AND TO PLOW PLOWING HIS AND TO HARVEST HARVEST HIS AND TO MAKE [THE] WEAPONS OF WARFARE HIS AND [THE] EQUIPMENT<S> OF CHARIOTRY HIS 12He will appoint some for himself as commanders of thousands and of fifties, and others to plow his ground, to reap his harvest, and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.
13AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS YOUR HE WILL TAKE TO PERFUMERS AND TO COOKS AND TO BAKERS 13And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.
14AND <OBJ.> FIELDS YOUR AND <OBJ.> VINEYARDS YOUR AND OLIVE GROVES YOUR <THE> GOOD HE WILL TAKE AND HE WILL GIVE [THEM] TO SERVANTS HIS 14He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his servants.
15AND SEED<S> YOUR AND VINEYARDS YOUR HE WILL TAKE A TENTH AND HE WILL GIVE [THEM] TO OFFICIALS HIS AND TO SERVANTS HIS 15He will take a tenth of your grain and grape harvest and give it to his officials and servants.
16AND <OBJ.> [MALE] SERVANTS YOUR AND <OBJ.> FEMALE SERVANTS YOUR AND <OBJ.> YOUNG MEN YOUR <THE> GOOD AND <OBJ.> DONKEYS YOUR HE WILL TAKE AND HE WILL USE [THEM] FOR WORK HIS 16And he will take your menservants and maidservants and your best cattle*NoteCloseLXX; Hebrew your best young men and donkeys and put them to his own use.
17FLOCK[S] YOUR HE WILL TAKE A TENTH AND YOU YOU WILL BECOME OF HIM <INTO> SERVANTS 17He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.
18AND YOU WILL CRY OUT IN THE DAY <THE> THAT <FROM> <TO> BECAUSE OF KING YOUR WHOM YOU HAVE CHOSEN FOR <THE> YOURSELVES AND NOT HE WILL ANSWER YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU IN THE DAY <THE> THAT 18When that day comes, you will beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
19AND THEY REFUSED THE PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO [THE] VOICE OF SAMUEL AND THEY SAID NO! FOR EXCEPT A KING HE WILL BE OVER US God Grants the Request 19Nevertheless the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must have a king over us.
20AND WE WILL BE ALSO WE LIKE ALL THE NATIONS AND HE WILL JUDGE US KING OUR AND HE WILL GO OUT <TO> BEFORE US AND HE WILL FIGHT <OBJ.> BATTLES OUR 20Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.”
21AND HE HEARD SAMUEL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF THE PEOPLE AND HE SPOKE THEM IN [THE] EARS OF YAHWEH 21Samuel listened to all the words of the people and repeated them in the hearing of the LORD.
22AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SAMUEL LISTEN TO VOICE THEIR AND YOU WILL MAKE KING FOR <THE> THEM A KING AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL GO EACH MAN TO OWN CITY HIS 22“Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “Everyone must go back to his city.”
