27AND HE LAY DOWN AHAZ WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM IN THE CITY IN JERUSALEM FOR NOT THEY BROUGHT HIM TO [THE] GRAVES OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL AND HE BECAME KING HEZEKIAH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 27And Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
1HEZEKIAH HE BECAME KING A SON OF TWENTY AND FIVE YEAR[S] AND TWENTY AND NINE YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] ABIJAH [THE] DAUGHTER OF ZECHARIAH Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple (2 Kings 18:1–12) 1Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah,*NoteCloseAbijah is a variant of Abi; see 2 Kings 18:2. the daughter of Zechariah.
2AND HE DID THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD DONE DAVID ANCESTOR HIS 2And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.
3HE IN THE YEAR <THE> FIRST OF REIGNING HIS IN THE MONTH <THE> FIRST HE OPENED <OBJ.> [THE] DOORS OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND HE REPAIRED THEM 3In the first month of the first year of his reign, Hezekiah opened and repaired the doors of the house of the LORD.
4AND HE BROUGHT <OBJ.> THE PRIESTS AND <OBJ.> THE LEVITES AND HE GATHERED THEM TO [THE] OPEN PLACE OF THE EAST 4Then he brought in the priests and Levites and gathered them in the square on the east side.
5AND HE SAID TO THEM LISTEN TO ME O LEVITES NOW CONSECRATE YOURSELVES AND CONSECRATE <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS YOUR AND BRING OUT <OBJ.> THE IMPURITY FROM THE HOLY PLACE 5“Listen to me, O Levites,” he said “Consecrate yourselves now and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers. Remove from the Holy Place every impurity.
6FOR THEY ACTED UNFAITHFULLY FATHERS OUR AND THEY DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH GOD OUR AND THEY FORSOOK HIM AND THEY TURNED FACES THEIR AWAY FROM [THE] TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH AND THEY GAVE A BACK 6For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.
7ALSO THEY SHUT [THE] DOORS OF THE PORCH AND THEY EXTINGUISHED <OBJ.> THE LAMPS AND INCENSE NOT THEY MADE SMOKE AND BURNT OFFERING[S] NOT THEY OFFERED UP IN THE HOLY PLACE TO [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 7They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. They did not burn incense or present burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the God of Israel.
8AND IT WAS [THE] WRATH OF YAHWEH TOWARDS JUDAH AND JERUSALEM AND HE HAS MADE THEM INTO A TERROR INTO A HORROR AND INTO A HISSING JUST AS YOU [ARE] SEEING WITH OWN EYES YOUR 8Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, horror, and scorn, as you can see with your own eyes.
9AND THERE! THEY HAVE FALLEN FATHERS OUR BY THE SWORD AND SONS OUR AND DAUGHTERS OUR AND WIVES OUR [ARE] IN <THE> CAPTIVITY ON THIS 9For behold, this is why our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and daughters and wives are in captivity.
10NOW [IS] WITH HEART MY TO MAKE A COVENANT TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND IT MAY TURN BACK FROM US [THE] BURNING OF ANGER HIS 10Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us.
11O SONS MY NOW MAY NOT YOU BE NEGLIGENT FOR <IN> YOU HE HAS CHOSEN YAHWEH TO STAND <TO> BEFORE HIM TO SERVE HIM AND TO BE OF HIM SERVANTS AND MAKERS OF SMOKE 11Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to burn incense.”
12AND THEY AROSE THE LEVITES MAHATH [THE] SON OF AMASAI AND JOEL [THE] SON OF AZARIAH OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF THE KOHATHITE[S] AND OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MERARI KISH [THE] SON OF ABDI AND AZARIAH [THE] SON OF JEHALLELEL AND OF THE GERSHONITE[S] JOAH [THE] SON OF ZIMMAH AND EDEN [THE] SON OF JOAH 12Then the Levites set to work: Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah from the Kohathites; Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel from the Merarites; Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah from the Gershonites;
13AND OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ELIZAPHAN SHIMRI AND JEIEL AND OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ASAPH ZECHARIAH AND MATTANIAH 13Shimri and Jeuel from the Elizaphanites; Zechariah and Mattaniah from the Asaphites;
14AND OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF HEMAN JEHIEL AND SHIMEI AND OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JEDUTHUN SHEMAIAH AND UZZIEL 14Jehiel and Shimei from the Hemanites; and Shemaiah and Uzziel from the Jeduthunites.
15AND THEY GATHERED <OBJ.> RELATIVES THEIR AND THEY CONSECRATED THEMSELVES AND THEY WENT ACCORDING TO [THE] COMMAND OF THE KING BY [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH TO CLEANSE [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 15When they had assembled their brothers and consecrated themselves, they went in to cleanse the house of the LORD, according to the command of the king by the words of the LORD.
16AND THEY WENT THE PRIESTS TO WITHIN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO CLEANSE [IT] AND THEY BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> ALL THE UNCLEANNESS WHICH THEY FOUND IN [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH TO [THE] COURT OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND THEY RECEIVED [IT] THE LEVITES TO BRING [IT] OUT TO [THE] WADI OF KIDRON [THE] OUTSIDE TOWARDS 16So the priests went inside the house of the LORD to cleanse it, and they brought out to the courtyard all the unclean things that they found in the temple of the LORD. Then the Levites took these things and carried them out to the Kidron Valley.
17AND THEY BEGAN ON [DAY] ONE OF THE MONTH <THE> FIRST TO CONSECRATE AND ON DAY EIGHT OF THE MONTH THEY CAME TO [THE] PORCH OF YAHWEH AND THEY CONSECRATED <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH FOR DAYS EIGHT AND ON DAY SIX- TEEN OF THE MONTH <THE> FIRST THEY FINISHED 17They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the LORD. For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD itself, finishing on the sixteenth day of the first month.
18AND THEY WENT WITHIN TO HEZEKIAH THE KING AND THEY SAID WE HAVE CLEANSED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] ALTAR OF THE BURNT OFFERING AND <OBJ.> ALL UTENSILS ITS AND <OBJ.> [THE] TABLE OF THE ROW AND <OBJ.> ALL UTENSILS ITS 18Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported, “We have cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the showbread with all its utensils.
19AND <OBJ.> ALL THE UTENSILS WHICH HE HAD REJECTED THE KING AHAZ IN REIGN HIS IN UNFAITHFULNESS HIS WE HAVE PREPARED AND WE HAVE CONSECRATED AND THERE THEY [ARE] <TO> BEFORE [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH 19Moreover, we have prepared and consecrated all the articles that King Ahaz in his unfaithfulness cast aside during his reign. They are now in front of the altar of the LORD.”
20AND HE ROSE EARLY HEZEKIAH THE KING AND HE GATHERED <OBJ.> [THE] OFFICIALS OF THE CITY AND HE WENT UP [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH Hezekiah Restores Temple Worship 20Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials and went up to the house of the LORD.
21AND THEY BROUGHT YOUNG BULLS SEVEN AND RAMS SEVEN AND LAMBS SEVEN AND HE-GOATS OF GOATS SEVEN TO A SIN OFFERING ON THE KINGDOM AND ON THE SANCTUARY AND ON JUDAH AND HE SAID TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON THE PRIESTS TO OFFER UP ON [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH 21They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And the king commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
22AND THEY SLAUGHTERED THE CATTLE AND THEY TOOK THE PRIESTS <OBJ.> THE BLOOD AND THEY SPRINKLED [IT] THE ALTAR TOWARDS AND THEY SLAUGHTERED THE RAMS AND THEY SPRINKLED THE BLOOD THE ALTAR TOWARDS AND THEY SLAUGHTERED THE LAMBS AND THEY SPRINKLED THE BLOOD THE ALTAR TOWARDS 22So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests took the blood and splattered it on the altar. They slaughtered the rams and splattered the blood on the altar. And they slaughtered the lambs and splattered the blood on the altar.
23AND THEY BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> [THE] GOATS OF THE SIN OFFERING <TO> BEFORE THE KING AND THE ASSEMBLY AND THEY LAID HANDS THEIR ON THEM 23Then they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, who laid their hands on them.
24AND THEY SLAUGHTERED THEM THE PRIESTS AND THEY MADE A SIN OFFERING <OBJ.> BLOOD THEIR THE ALTAR TOWARDS TO MAKE ATONEMENT ON ALL ISRAEL FOR FOR ALL ISRAEL HE HAD SAID THE KING THE BURNT OFFERING AND THE SIN OFFERING 24And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.
25AND HE STATIONED <OBJ.> THE LEVITES [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH WITH CYMBALS WITH LYRES AND WITH HARPS BY [THE] COMMAND OF DAVID AND GAD [THE] SEER OF THE KING AND NATHAN THE PROPHET FOR [WAS] BY [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH THE COMMANDMENT BY [THE] HAND OF PROPHETS HIS 25Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres according to the command of David, of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet. For the command had come from the LORD through His prophets.
26AND THEY STOOD THE LEVITES WITH [THE] INSTRUMENTS OF DAVID AND THE PRIESTS WITH TRUMPETS 26The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets.
27AND HE SAID HEZEKIAH TO OFFER UP THE BURNT OFFERING TO THE ALTAR AND AT [THE] TIME [WHEN] IT BEGAN THE BURNT OFFERING IT BEGAN [THE] SONG OF YAHWEH AND THE TRUMPETS AND ON [THE] HANDS OF [THE] INSTRUMENTS OF DAVID [THE] KING OF ISRAEL 27And Hezekiah ordered that the burnt offering be sacrificed on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD and the trumpets began as well, accompanied by the instruments of David king of Israel.
28AND ALL THE ASSEMBLY [WERE] BOWING DOWN AND THE SONG [WAS] SINGING AND THE TRUMPETS [WERE] BLOWING A TRUMPET <THE> EVERYTHING UNTIL <TO> WAS COMPLETE THE BURNT OFFERING 28The whole assembly was worshiping, the singers were singing, and the trumpeters were playing. All this continued until the burnt offering was completed.
29AND JUST AS FINISHED TO OFFER UP THEY BOWED DOWN THE KING AND ALL THOSE [WHO] WERE FOUND WITH HIM AND THEY BOWED DOWN 29When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.
30AND HE SAID HEZEKIAH THE KING AND THE OFFICIALS TO THE LEVITES TO PRAISE <TO> YAHWEH WITH [THE] WORDS OF DAVID AND ASAPH THE SEER AND THEY PRAISED TO TO JOY AND THEY BOWED LOW AND THEY BOWED DOWN 30Then King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to sing praises to the LORD in the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed down and worshiped.
31AND HE ANSWERED HEZEKIAH AND HE SAID NOW YOU HAVE FILLED HAND YOUR TO YAHWEH DRAW NEAR AND BRING SACRIFICES AND THANK-OFFERINGS TO [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND THEY BROUGHT THE ASSEMBLY SACRIFICES AND THANK-OFFERINGS AND EVERY [PERSON] WILLING OF HEART BURNT OFFERINGS 31Then Hezekiah said, “Now that you have consecrated yourselves to the LORD,*NoteCloseOr filled your hand for the LORD come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the LORD.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.
32AND IT WAS [THE] NUMBER OF THE BURNT OFFERING[S] WHICH THEY BROUGHT THE ASSEMBLY CATTLE SEVENTY RAMS ONE HUNDRED LAMBS TWO HUNDRED [WERE] FOR A BURNT OFFERING TO YAHWEH ALL THESE 32The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.
33AND THE HOLY OFFERINGS [WERE] CATTLE SIX HUNDRED<S> AND SHEEP THREE THOUSAND<S> 33And the consecrated offerings were six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep.
34ONLY THE PRIESTS THEY WERE TO FEWNESS AND NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO SKIN <OBJ.> ALL THE BURNT OFFERINGS AND THEY HELPED THEM RELATIVES THEIR THE LEVITES UNTIL WAS COMPLETE THE WORK AND UNTIL THEY HAD CONSECRATED THEMSELVES THE PRIESTS FOR THE LEVITES [WERE] UPRIGHT OF HEART TO CONSECRATE THEMSELVES MORE THAN THE PRIESTS 34However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had consecrated themselves. For the Levites had been more diligent in consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
35AND ALSO BURNT OFFERING[S] TO ABUNDANCE WITH [THE] FAT<S> OF THE PEACE OFFERINGS AND WITH THE DRINK OFFERINGS OF THE BURNT OFFERING AND IT WAS ARRANGED [THE] SERVICE OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 35Furthermore, the burnt offerings were abundant, along with the fat of the peace offerings and the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was established.
36AND HE REJOICED HEZEKIAH AND ALL THE PEOPLE ON WHAT HE HAD PREPARED <THE> GOD FOR THE PEOPLE FOR IN SUDDENNESS IT HAD HAPPENED THE THING 36Then Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had prepared for the people, because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
