9AND HE LAY DOWN JOTHAM WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID AND HE BECAME KING AHAZ SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 9And Jotham rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Ahaz reigned in his place.
1[WAS] A SON OF TWENTY YEAR[S] AHAZ WHEN BECAME KING HE AND SIX- TEEN YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND NOT HE DID THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH LIKE DAVID ANCESTOR HIS Ahaz Reigns in Judah (2 Kings 16:1–9) 1Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. And unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
2AND HE WALKED IN [THE] WAYS OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL AND ALSO MOLTEN IMAGES HE MADE FOR THE BAALS 2Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even made cast images of the Baals.
3AND HE HE MADE SMOKE IN [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM AND HE BURNED <OBJ.> SONS HIS IN THE FIRE ACCORDING TO [THE] ABOMINATIONS OF THE NATIONS WHICH HE DISPOSSESSED YAHWEH FROM BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 3Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire,*NoteCloseLiterally passed his sons through the fire according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
4AND HE SACRIFICED AND HE MADE SMOKE AT THE HIGH PLACES AND ON THE HILLS AND UNDER EVERY TREE LUXURIANT 4And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
5AND HE GAVE HIM YAHWEH GOD HIS IN [THE] HAND OF [THE] KING OF ARAM AND THEY DEFEATED <IN> HIM AND THEY TOOK CAPTIVE FROM HIM A GROUP OF CAPTIVES LARGE AND THEY BROUGHT [THEM] DAMASCUS AND ALSO IN [THE] HAND OF [THE] KING OF ISRAEL HE WAS GIVEN AND HE DEFEATED <IN> HIM A DEFEAT GREAT Aram Defeats Judah (Isaiah 1:1–9) 5So the LORD his God delivered Ahaz into the hand of the king of Aram, who attacked him and took many captives to Damascus. Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.
6AND HE KILLED PEKAH [THE] SON OF REMALIAH AMONG JUDAH ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND IN A DAY ONE <THE> ALL [WERE] SONS OF STRENGTH BECAUSE HAD FORSAKEN THEY <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR 6For in one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000 valiant men in Judah. This happened because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.
7AND HE KILLED ZIKRI <THE> WARRIOR OF EPHRAIM <OBJ.> MAASEIAH [THE] SON OF THE KING AND <OBJ.> AZRIKAM [THE] OFFICER OF THE HOUSE AND <OBJ.> ELKANAH [THE] SECOND OF THE KING 7Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the son of the king, Azrikam the governor of the palace, and Elkanah the second to the king.
8AND THEY TOOK CAPTIVE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL OF RELATIVES THEIR TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND WOMEN SONS AND DAUGHTERS AND ALSO BOOTY MUCH THEY PLUNDERED FROM THEM AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> THE BOOTY TO SAMARIA 8Then the Israelites took 200,000 captives from their kinsmen— women, sons, and daughters. They also carried off a great deal of plunder and brought it to Samaria.
9AND THERE HE WAS A PROPHET OF YAHWEH [WAS] ODED NAME HIS AND HE WENT OUT <TO> BEFORE THE ARMY WHICH WAS COMING TO SAMARIA AND HE SAID TO THEM HERE! IN [THE] WRATH OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS YOUR TOWARDS JUDAH HE GAVE THEM IN HAND YOUR AND YOU HAVE KILLED AMONG THEM IN A RAGE [WHICH] TO TO THE HEAVENS IT HAS REACHED 9But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches up to heaven.
10AND NOW [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM YOU [ARE] SAYING TO SUBJUGATE TO [MALE] SLAVES AND TO FEMALE SLAVES FOR YOURSELVES ¿ NOT CERTAINLY YOU WITH YOU [ARE] GUILT<S> TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR 10And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
11AND THEREFORE LISTEN TO ME AND RETURN THE GROUP OF CAPTIVES WHICH YOU HAVE TAKEN CAPTIVE FROM RELATIVES YOUR FOR [THE] BURNING OF [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH [IS] TOWARDS YOU 11Now therefore, listen to me and return the captives you took from your kinsmen, for the fierce anger of the LORD is upon you.”
12AND THEY ROSE UP MEN SOME OF [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF EPHRAIM AZARIAH [THE] SON OF JEHOHANAN BEREKIAH [THE] SON OF MESHILLEMOTH AND JECHIZKIAH [THE] SON OF SHALLUM AND AMASA [THE] SON OF HADLAI ON THE [ONES WHO] WERE COMING FROM THE WAR 12Then some of the leaders of the Ephraimites*NoteCloseThat is, the leaders of the northern kingdom of Israel — Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth,*NoteCloseMeshillemoth is a variant of Meshillemith; see 1 Chronicles 9:12. Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai— stood in opposition to those arriving from the war.
13AND THEY SAID TO THEM NOT YOU MUST BRING <OBJ.> THE GROUP OF CAPTIVES HERE FOR TO [THE] GUILT OF YAHWEH ON US [ARE] YOU? SAYING TO ADD TO SINS OUR AND TO GUILT OUR FOR MUCH GUILT [BELONGS] TO US AND BURNING OF ANGER [IS] TOWARDS ISRAEL 13“You must not bring the captives here,” they said “for you are proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
14AND HE LEFT THE [MAN] EQUIPPED <OBJ.> THE GROUP OF CAPTIVES AND <OBJ.> THE PLUNDER <TO> BEFORE THE COMMANDERS AND ALL THE ASSEMBLY 14So the armed men left the captives and the plunder before the leaders and all the assembly.
15AND THEY AROSE THE MEN WHO THEY HAD BEEN DESIGNATED BY NAMES AND THEY TOOK HOLD ON THE GROUP OF CAPTIVES AND ALL NAKED PEOPLE THEIR THEY CLOTHED FROM THE BOOTY AND THEY CLOTHED THEM AND THEY SHOD THEM AND THEY FED THEM AND THEY GAVE TO DRINK THEM AND THEY ANOINTED THEM AND THEY LED THEM ON DONKEYS <TO> ANY [ONE WHO] STUMBLED AND THEY BROUGHT THEM JERICHO [THE] CITY OF THE PALM TREES BESIDE RELATIVES THEIR AND THEY RETURNED SAMARIA 15Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the captives, and provided from the plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them sandals and food and drink, anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on donkeys. So they brought them to Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

17AND AGAIN [THE] EDOMITES THEY HAD COME AND THEY HAD DEFEATED <IN> JUDAH AND THEY HAD TAKEN CAPTIVE CAPTIVE[S] 17The Edomites had again come and attacked Judah and carried away captives.
18AND [THE] PHILISTINES THEY HAD MADE A RAID ON [THE] CITIES OF THE SHEPHELAH AND THE NEGEV OF JUDAH AND THEY HAD CAPTURED <OBJ.> BETH SHEMESH AND <OBJ.> AIJALON AND <OBJ.> <THE> GEDEROTH AND <OBJ.> SOCOH AND DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> TIMNAH AND DAUGHTERS ITS AND <OBJ.> GIMZO AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS ITS AND THEY DWELT THERE 18The Philistines had also raided the cities of the foothills*NoteCloseHebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea and the Negev of Judah, capturing and occupying Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, and Gederoth, as well as Soco Timnah and Gimzo with their villages.
19FOR HE HAD HUMBLED YAHWEH <OBJ.> JUDAH FOR SAKE OF AHAZ [THE] KING OF ISRAEL FOR HE HAD ALLOWED LACK OF RESTRAINT IN JUDAH AND HE HAD ACTED UNFAITHFULLY UNFAITHFULNESS AGAINST YAHWEH 19For the LORD humbled Judah because Ahaz king of Israel*NoteCloseThat is, Judah; in 2 Chronicles, Judah is occasionally called Israel, as representative of the true Israel. had thrown off restraint in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
20AND HE CAME ON HIM TIGLATH- PILESER [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AND HE HARASSED <TO> HIM AND NOT HE STRENGTHENED HIM 20Then Tiglath-pileser*NoteCloseHebrew Tilgath-pilneser, a variant spelling of Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came to Ahaz but afflicted him rather than strengthening him.
21FOR HE HAD PLUNDERED AHAZ <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF THE KING AND THE OFFICIALS AND HE HAD GIVEN TO [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AND NOT FOR HELP FOR HIM 21Although Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
22AND AT [THE] TIME HARASSED <TO> HIM AND HE INCREASED TO ACT UNFAITHFULLY AGAINST YAHWEH THAT THE KING AHAZ 22In the time of his distress King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.
23AND HE SACRIFICED TO [THE] GODS OF DAMASCUS WHICH HAD DEFEATED <IN> HIM AND HE SAID THAT [THE] GODS OF [THE] KINGS OF ARAM THEY [ARE] HELPING <OBJ.> THEM TO <THE> THEM I WILL SACRIFICE AND THEY WILL HELP ME AND THEY THEY BECAME FOR HIM <INTO> CAUSING OVERTHROW HIS AND <TO> ALL ISRAEL 23He sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him, and he said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the downfall of Ahaz and of all Israel.
24AND HE GATHERED AHAZ <OBJ.> [THE] UTENSILS OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD AND HE CUT UP <OBJ.> [THE] UTENSILS OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD AND HE CLOSED <OBJ.> [THE] DOORS OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND HE MADE FOR HIMSELF ALTARS AT EVERY CORNER IN JERUSALEM 24Then Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of God, cut them into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his own on every street corner in Jerusalem.
25AND IN EVERY CITY AND A CITY OF JUDAH HE MADE HIGH PLACES TO MAKE SMOKE TO GODS OTHER AND HE PROVOKED <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS HIS 25In every city of Judah he built high places to offer incense to other gods, and so he provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers.
26AND [THE] REST OF MATTERS HIS AND ALL WAYS HIS <THE> FORMER AND <THE> LATTER THERE THEY [ARE] WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH AND ISRAEL 26As for the rest of the acts of Ahaz and all his ways, from beginning to end, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
27AND HE LAY DOWN AHAZ WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM IN THE CITY IN JERUSALEM FOR NOT THEY BROUGHT HIM TO [THE] GRAVES OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL AND HE BECAME KING HEZEKIAH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 27And Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
