33AND HE LAY DOWN HEZEKIAH WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM AT [THE] ASCENT OF [THE] GRAVES OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF DAVID AND HONOR THEY DID TO HIM AT DEATH HIS ALL JUDAH AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM AND HE BECAME KING MANASSEH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 33And Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son Manasseh reigned in his place.
1[WAS] A SON OF TWO [PLUS] TEN YEAR[S] MANASSEH WHEN BECAME KING HE AND FIFTY AND FIVE YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM Manasseh Reigns in Judah (2 Kings 21:1–9) 1Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years.
2AND HE DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ACCORDING TO [THE] ABOMINATIONS OF THE NATIONS WHICH HE DISPOSSESSED YAHWEH FROM BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 2And he did evil in the sight of the LORD by following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
3AND HE RETURNED AND HE BUILT <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACES WHICH HE HAD PULLED DOWN HEZEKIAH FATHER HIS AND HE SET UP ALTARS TO THE BAALS AND HE MADE ASHERAH POLES AND HE BOWED DOWN TO ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND HE SERVED <OBJ.> THEM 3For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down, and he raised up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. And he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
4AND HE BUILT ALTARS IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAD SAID YAHWEH IN JERUSALEM IT WILL BE NAME MY FOR EVER 4Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “My Name will remain in Jerusalem forever.”
5AND HE BUILT ALTARS TO ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS IN [THE] TWO [THE] COURTYARDS OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 5In both courtyards of the house of the LORD, he built altars to all the host of heaven.
6AND HE HE MADE PASS <OBJ.> SONS HIS IN THE FIRE IN [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM AND HE PRACTICED SOOTHSAYING AND HE PRACTICED DIVINATION AND HE PRACTICED SORCERY AND HE DEALT WITH NECROMANCER AND SOOTHSAYER HE INCREASED TO DO THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH TO PROVOKE TO ANGER HIM 6He sacrificed his sons in the fire*NoteCloseLiterally made his sons pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinnom. He practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.
7AND HE PUT <OBJ.> [THE] IDOL OF <THE> SCULPTURE WHICH HE HAD MADE IN [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD WHICH HE HAD SAID GOD TO DAVID AND TO SOLOMON SON HIS IN THE HOUSE <THE> THIS AND IN JERUSALEM WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN FROM ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL I WILL PUT <OBJ.> NAME MY FOR EVER 7Manasseh even took the carved image he had made and set it up in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name forever.
8AND NOT I WILL REPEAT TO REMOVE <OBJ.> [THE] FOOT OF ISRAEL FROM ON THE GROUND WHICH I APPOINTED FOR ANCESTORS YOUR ONLY IF THEY WILL TAKE CARE TO OBSERVE <OBJ.> ALL THAT I COMMANDED THEM TO ALL THE LAW AND THE STATUTES AND THE JUDGMENTS BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES 8I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses— all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
9AND HE MISLED MANASSEH <OBJ.> JUDAH AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM TO DO EVIL MORE THAN THE NATIONS WHICH HE HAD DESTROYED YAHWEH FROM BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 9So Manasseh led the people of Judah and Jerusalem astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
10AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MANASSEH AND TO PEOPLE HIS AND NOT THEY PAID ATTENTION Manasseh’s Repentance and Restoration (2 Kings 21:10–18) 10And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they did not listen.
11AND HE BROUGHT YAHWEH ON THEM <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY WHICH [BELONGED] TO [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AND THEY CAPTURED <OBJ.> MANASSEH WITH <THE> HOOKS AND THEY BOUND HIM WITH <THE> BRONZE FETTERS AND THEY BROUGHT HIM BABYLON TOWARDS 11So the LORD brought against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria, who captured Manasseh, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.
12AND JUST AS HARASSED <TO> HIM HE ENTREATED <OBJ.> [THE] FACE OF YAHWEH GOD HIS AND HE HUMBLED HIMSELF EXCEEDINGLY FROM TO BEFORE [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS HIS 12And in his distress Manasseh sought the favor of the LORD his God and earnestly humbled himself before the God of his fathers.
13AND HE PRAYED TO HIM AND HE WAS ENTREATED BY HIM AND HE HEARD SUPPLICATION HIS AND HE BROUGHT BACK HIM JERUSALEM TO KINGDOM HIS AND HE KNEW MANASSEH THAT YAHWEH HE [WAS] <THE> GOD 13And when he prayed to Him, the LORD received his plea and heard his petition. So He brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.
14AND AFTER THUS HE REBUILT [THE] WALL OUTER OF [THE] CITY OF DAVID WEST -WARD OF GIHON IN THE WADI AND TO GO IN [THE] GATE OF THE FISH AND HE WENT AROUND <TO> THE OPHEL AND HE MADE HIGH IT VERY AND HE PUT COMMANDERS OF [THE] ARMY IN ALL THE CITIES <THE> FORTIFIED IN JUDAH 14After this, Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
15AND HE REMOVED <OBJ.> [THE] GODS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS AND <OBJ.> THE IMAGE FROM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND ALL THE ALTARS WHICH HE HAD BUILT ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND IN JERUSALEM AND HE THREW [THEM] [THE] OUTSIDE TOWARDS OF THE CITY 15He removed the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the LORD, along with all the altars he had built on the temple mount*NoteCloseLiterally the mountain of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem, and he dumped them outside the city.
16AND HE REBUILT <OBJ.> [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH AND HE SACRIFICED ON IT SACRIFICES OF PEACE OFFERING<S> AND THANKSGIVING AND HE SAID TO JUDAH TO SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL 16Then he restored the altar of the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings and thank offerings on it, and he told Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel.
17BUT STILL THE PEOPLE [WERE] SACRIFICING AT THE HIGH PLACES ONLY TO YAHWEH GOD THEIR 17Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
18AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF MANASSEH AND PRAYER HIS TO GOD HIS AND [THE] WORDS OF THE SEERS WHO SPOKE TO HIM IN [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL THERE THEY [ARE] ON [THE] MATTERS OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL 18As for the rest of the acts of Manasseh, along with his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.*NoteCloseThat is, Judah; in 2 Chronicles, Judah is occasionally called Israel, as representative of the true Israel.
19AND PRAYER HIS AND BEING ENTREATED BY HIM AND ALL SIN HIS AND UNFAITHFULNESS HIS AND THE PLACES WHICH HE BUILT AT THEM HIGH PLACES AND HE SET UP THE ASHERAH POLES AND THE IDOLS <TO> BEFORE HE HUMBLED HIMSELF THERE THEY [ARE] WRITTEN ON [THE] WORDS OF HOZAI 19His prayer and how God received his plea as well as all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself, they are indeed written in the Records of the Seers.*NoteCloseOr the Records of the Hozai or the Annals of the Prophets
20AND HE LAY DOWN MANASSEH WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM HOUSE HIS AND HE BECAME KING AMON SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 20And Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried at his palace. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
21[WAS] A SON OF TWENTY AND TWO YEAR[S] AMON WHEN BECAME KING HE AND TWO YEARS HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM Amon Reigns in Judah (2 Kings 21:19–26) 21Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years.
22AND HE DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH JUST AS HE HAD DONE MANASSEH FATHER HIS AND TO ALL THE IDOLS WHICH HE HAD MADE MANASSEH FATHER HIS HE SACRIFICED AMON AND HE SERVED THEM 22And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon served and sacrificed to all the idols that his father Manasseh had made,
23AND NOT HE HUMBLED HIMSELF FROM TO BEFORE YAHWEH AS HAD HUMBLED HIMSELF MANASSEH FATHER HIS FOR HE AMON HE INCREASED GUILT 23but he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had done; instead, Amon increased his guilt.
24AND THEY CONSPIRED ON HIM SERVANTS HIS AND THEY KILLED HIM IN OWN HOUSE HIS 24Then the servants of Amon conspired against him and killed him in his palace.
25AND THEY STRUCK DOWN [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND <OBJ.> ALL THOSE [WHO] HAD CONSPIRED ON THE KING AMON AND THEY MADE KING [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND <OBJ.> JOSIAH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 25But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place.
