1 [WAS] A SON OF EIGHT YEARS JOSIAH WHEN BECAME KING HE AND THIRTY AND ONE YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM
Josiah Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 22:1–2 )
1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.
2 AND HE DID THE RIGHT IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH AND HE WALKED IN [THE] WAYS OF DAVID ANCESTOR HIS AND NOT HE TURNED ASIDE RIGHT AND LEFT
2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
3 AND IN EIGHT YEARS OF REIGNING HIS AND HE STILL HE [WAS] A YOUTH HE BEGAN TO SEEK <TO> [THE] GOD OF DAVID ANCESTOR HIS AND IN TWO [PLUS] TEN YEAR HE BEGAN TO CLEANSE <OBJ.> JUDAH AND JERUSALEM FROM THE HIGH PLACES AND THE ASHERAH POLES AND THE IDOLS AND THE MOLTEN IMAGES
Josiah Destroys Idolatry
(1 Kings 13:1–10 ; 2 Kings 23:4–20 )
3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
4 AND PEOPLE PULLED DOWN <TO> BEFORE HIM <OBJ.> [THE] ALTARS OF THE BAALS AND THE INCENSE ALTARS WHICH [WERE] <TO> UPWARDS <TOWARDS> <FROM> ABOVE <THE> THEM HE CUT DOWN AND THE ASHERAH POLES AND THE IDOLS AND THE MOLTEN IMAGES HE BROKE IN PIECES AND HE PULVERIZED [THEM] AND HE SPRINKLED [THEM] ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GRAVES WHO SACRIFICED TO THEM
4 Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them. He shattered the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images, crushed them to dust, and scattered them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
5 AND [THE] BONES OF PRIESTS HE BURNED ON ALTARS THEIR AND HE CLEANSED <OBJ.> JUDAH AND <OBJ.> JERUSALEM
5 Then he burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
6 AND IN [THE] CITIES OF MANASSEH AND EPHRAIM AND SIMEON AND TO NAPHTALI WITH SWORDS THEIR ALL AROUND
6 Josiah did the same in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them.
7 AND HE PULLED DOWN <OBJ.> THE ALTARS AND <OBJ.> THE ASHERAH POLES AND THE IDOLS HE CRUSHED TO PULVERIZE AND ALL THE INCENSE ALTARS HE CUT DOWN IN ALL [THE] LAND OF ISRAEL AND HE RETURNED TO JERUSALEM
7 He tore down the altars and Asherah poles, crushed the idols to powder, and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
8 AND IN YEAR EIGHT- TEEN OF REIGNING HIS TO CLEANSE THE LAND AND THE HOUSE HE SENT <OBJ.> SHAPHAN [THE] SON AZALIAH AND <OBJ.> MAASEIAH [THE] OFFICIAL OF THE CITY AND <OBJ.> JOAH [THE] SON OF JOAHAZ THE RECORDER TO REPAIR <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH GOD HIS
Josiah Repairs the Temple
(2 Kings 22:3–7 )
8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, in order to cleanse the land and the temple, Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.
9 AND THEY WENT TO HILKIAH THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND THEY GAVE <OBJ.> THE MONEY WHICH HAD BEEN BROUGHT [THE] HOUSE OF GOD WHICH THEY HAD GATHERED THE LEVITES [THE] KEEPERS OF THE THRESHOLD FROM [THE] HAND OF MANASSEH AND EPHRAIM AND FROM ALL [THE] REMNANT OF ISRAEL AND FROM ALL JUDAH AND BENJAMIN AND THEY RETURNED OF JERUSALEM
9 So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites who guarded the doors had collected from the people of Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the remnant of Israel, from all Judah and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
10 AND THEY GAVE [IT] ON [THE] HAND OF [THE] DOER OF THE WORK WHO WERE APPOINTED IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND THEY GAVE <OBJ.> IT [THE] DOERS OF THE WORK WHO [WERE] WORKING IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO MEND AND TO REPAIR THE HOUSE
10 They put it into the hands of those supervising the work in the house of the LORD, who in turn gave it to the workmen restoring and repairing the house of the LORD.
11 AND THEY GAVE [IT] TO THE CRAFTSMEN AND TO THE BUILDERS TO BUY STONES OF HEWING AND WOOD<S> FOR THE CLAMPS AND TO MAKE BEAMS FOR <OBJ.> THE HOUSES WHICH THEY HAD RUINED [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH
11 They also gave money to the carpenters and builders to buy dressed stone, as well as timbers for couplings and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to deteriorate.
12 AND THE MEN [WERE] WORKING IN FAITHFULNESS IN THE WORK AND OVER THEM [WERE] APPOINTED JAHATH AND OBADIAH THE LEVITES OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MERARI AND ZECHARIAH AND MESHULLAM OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF THE KOHATHITES TO ACT AS OVERSEERS AND THE LEVITES EVERY [ONE WHO] WAS SKILLED IN INSTRUMENTS OF SONG
12 And the men did the work faithfully. The Levites overseeing them were Jahath and Obadiah descendants of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, descendants of Kohath. Other Levites, all skilled with musical instruments,
13 <AND> [WERE] OVER THE BURDEN-BEARERS AND [WERE] ACTING AS OVERSEERS OF EVERY DOER OF WORK FOR LABOR AND LABOR AND SOME OF THE LEVITES [WERE] SCRIBES AND OFFICIALS AND GATEKEEPERS
13 were over the laborers and supervised all who did the work, task by task. Some of the Levites were secretaries, officers, and gatekeepers.
14 AND WHEN BROUGHT OUT THEY <OBJ.> THE MONEY WHICH HAD BEEN BROUGHT [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH HE FOUND HILKIAH THE PRIEST <OBJ.> [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] LAW OF YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES
Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law
(2 Kings 22:8–13 )
14 While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD given by Moses.
15 AND HE ANSWERED HILKIAH AND HE SAID TO SHAPHAN THE SCRIBE [THE] SCROLL OF THE LAW I HAVE FOUND IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND HE GAVE HILKIAH <OBJ.> THE SCROLL TO SHAPHAN
15 And Hilkiah said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD!” And he gave it to Shaphan.
16 AND HE BROUGHT SHAPHAN <OBJ.> THE SCROLL TO THE KING AND HE BROUGHT BACK AGAIN <OBJ.> THE KING A WORD <TO> SAYING ALL THAT IT WAS GIVEN IN [THE] HAND OF SERVANTS YOUR THEY [ARE] DOING
16 Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported, “Your servants are doing all that has been placed in their hands.
17 AND THEY HAVE POURED OUT <OBJ.> THE MONEY WHICH WAS FOUND IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND THEY HAVE PUT IT ON [THE] HAND OF THOSE [WHO] WERE APPOINTED AND ON [THE] HAND OF [THE] DOERS OF THE WORK
17 They have paid out the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have put it into the hands of the supervisors and workers.”
18 AND HE TOLD SHAPHAN THE SCRIBE TO THE KING <TO> SAYING A SCROLL HE HAS GIVEN TO ME HILKIAH THE PRIEST AND HE READ ALOUD IN IT SHAPHAN <TO> BEFORE THE KING
18 Moreover Shaphan the scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.
19 AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD THE KING <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF THE LAW AND HE TORE <OBJ.> CLOTHES HIS
19 When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes
20 AND HE COMMANDED THE KING <OBJ.> HILKIAH AND <OBJ.> AHIKAM [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN AND <OBJ.> ABDON [THE] SON OF MICAH AND <OBJ.> SHAPHAN THE SCRIBE AND <OBJ.> ASAIAH [THE] SERVANT OF THE KING <TO> SAYING
20 and commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king:
21 GO CONSULT <OBJ.> YAHWEH FOR ME AND FOR THE REMNANT AMONG ISRAEL AND AMONG JUDAH ON [THE] WORDS OF THE SCROLL WHICH IT HAS BEEN FOUND FOR [IS] GREAT [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH WHICH IT HAS BEEN POURED OUT ON US ON THAT NOT THEY TOOK CARE ANCESTORS OUR <OBJ.> [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO OBSERVE ACCORDING TO EVERY <THE> [THING] WRITTEN ON THE SCROLL <THE> THIS
21 “Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
22 AND HE WENT HILKIAH AND [THOSE] WHOM THE KING TO HULDAH THE PROPHETESS [THE] WIFE OF SHALLUM [THE] SON OF TOKHATH [THE] SON OF HASRAH [THE] KEEPER OF THE GARMENTS AND SHE [WAS] DWELLING IN JERUSALEM IN THE SECOND DISTRICT AND THEY SPOKE TO HER LIKE THIS
Huldah’s Prophecy
(2 Kings 22:14–20 )
22 So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
23 AND SHE SAID TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL SAY TO THE MAN WHO HE SENT <OBJ.> YOU TO ME
23 And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
24 THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING HARM ON THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND ON INHABITANTS ITS <OBJ.> ALL THE CURSES WHICH ARE WRITTEN ON THE SCROLL WHICH PEOPLE HAVE READ ALOUD <TO> BEFORE [THE] KING OF JUDAH
24 that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
25 BECAUSE THAT THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME AND THEY HAVE MADE SMOKE TO GODS OTHER SO AS TO PROVOKE TO ANGER ME BY ALL [THE] WORKS OF HANDS THEIR SO IT MAY POUR FORTH RAGE MY ON THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND NOT IT WILL BE QUENCHED
25 because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be quenched.’
26 AND TO [THE] KING OF JUDAH WHO SENT <OBJ.> YOU TO CONSULT <IN> YAHWEH THUS YOU WILL SAY TO HIM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL THE WORDS WHICH YOU HAVE HEARD
26 But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
27 BECAUSE IT WAS SOFT HEART YOUR AND YOU HUMBLED YOURSELF FROM TO BEFORE GOD WHEN HEARING YOU <OBJ.> WORDS HIS ON THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND ON INHABITANTS ITS AND YOU HUMBLED YOURSELF <TO> BEFORE ME AND YOU TORE <OBJ.> CLOTHES YOUR AND YOU WEPT <TO> BEFORE ME AND ALSO I I HAVE HEARD [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH
27 because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its people, and because you have humbled yourself before Me and have torn your clothes and wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
28 HERE I [WILL] GATHER YOU TO ANCESTORS YOUR AND YOU WILL BE GATHERED TO GRAVE<S> YOUR IN PEACE AND NOT THEY WILL LOOK EYES YOUR ON ALL THE DISTRESS WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING ON THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND ON INHABITANTS ITS AND THEY BROUGHT BACK <OBJ.> THE KING WORD
28 ‘Now I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the calamity that I will bring on this place and on its people.’”
So they brought her answer back to the king.
29 AND HE SENT THE KING AND HE GATHERED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] ELDERS OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM
Josiah Renews the Covenant
(2 Kings 23:1–3 )
29 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
30 AND HE WENT UP THE KING [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND EVERY <THE> PERSON OF JUDAH AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM AND THE PRIESTS AND THE LEVITES AND ALL THE PEOPLE FROM GREAT AND UNTO SMALL AND HE READ ALOUD IN EARS THEIR <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF [THE] SCROLL OF THE COVENANT WHICH HAD BEEN FOUND [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH
30 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites— all the people great and small— and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
31 AND HE STOOD THE KING AT PLACE HIS AND HE MADE <OBJ.> THE COVENANT <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH TO WALK AFTER YAHWEH AND TO KEEP <OBJ.> COMMANDMENTS HIS AND TESTIMONIES HIS AND STATUTES HIS WITH ALL HEART HIS AND WITH ALL BEING HIS TO OBSERVE <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF THE COVENANT WHICH WAS WRITTEN ON THE SCROLL <THE> THIS
31 So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of the covenant that were written in this book.
32 AND HE MADE STAND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] WAS FOUND IN JERUSALEM AND BENJAMIN AND THEY DID [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM ACCORDING TO [THE] COVENANT OF GOD [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR
32 Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
33 AND HE REMOVED JOSIAH <OBJ.> ALL THE ABOMINATIONS FROM ALL THE LANDS WHICH [BELONGED] TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND HE MADE TO SERVE <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] WAS FOUND IN ISRAEL TO SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD THEIR ALL DAYS HIS NOT THEY TURNED ASIDE FROM AFTER YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS THEIR
33 And Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
