4AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM WHY? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon replied “I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
5AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM JONADAB LIE DOWN ON BED YOUR AND MAKE YOURSELF SICK AND HE WILL COME FATHER YOUR TO SEE YOU AND YOU WILL SAY TO HIM LET HER COME PLEASE TAMAR SISTER MY AND LET HER CAUSE TO EAT ME FOOD AND SHE WILL MAKE TO EYES MY <OBJ.> THE FOOD SO THAT THAT I MAY SEE AND I WILL EAT FROM HAND HER 5Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
6AND HE LAY DOWN AMNON AND HE MADE HIMSELF SICK AND HE CAME THE KING TO SEE HIM AND HE SAID AMNON TO THE KING LET HER COME PLEASE TAMAR SISTER MY AND LET HER MAKE CAKES TO EYES MY TWO CAKES SO I MAY EAT FROM HAND HER 6So Amnon lay down and feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
7AND HE SENT DAVID TO TAMAR THE HOUSE TOWARDS <TO> SAYING GO PLEASE [THE] HOUSE OF AMNON BROTHER YOUR AND MAKE FOR <THE> HIM THE FOOD 7Then David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Please go to the house of Amnon your brother and prepare a meal for him.”
8AND SHE WENT TAMAR [THE] HOUSE OF AMNON BROTHER HER AND HE [WAS] LYING DOWN AND SHE TOOK <OBJ.> THE DOUGH AND SHE KNEADED [IT] AND SHE MADE CAKES TO EYES HIS AND SHE COOKED <OBJ.> THE CAKES 8So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked them.
9AND SHE TOOK <OBJ.> THE PAN AND SHE POURED OUT <TO> BEFORE HIM AND HE REFUSED TO EAT AND HE SAID AMNON SEND OUT EVERY PERSON FROM WITH <THE> ME AND THEY WENT OUT EVERY PERSON FROM WITH <THE> HIM 9Then she brought the pan and set it down before him, but he refused to eat. “Send everyone away!” said Amnon. And everyone went out.
10AND HE SAID AMNON TO TAMAR BRING THE FOOD THE CHAMBER SO I MAY EAT FROM HAND YOUR AND SHE TOOK TAMAR <OBJ.> THE CAKES WHICH SHE HAD MADE AND SHE BROUGHT [THEM] TO AMNON BROTHER HER THE CHAMBER TOWARDS 10Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, so that I may eat it from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes she had made and went to her brother Amnon’s bedroom.
11AND SHE BROUGHT [THEM] TO HIM TO EAT AND HE TOOK HOLD ON <THE> HER AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER COME LIE WITH ME O SISTER MY 11And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said “Come lie with me, my sister!”
12AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HIM MAY [YOU] NOT O BROTHER MY MAY NOT YOU HUMBLE ME FOR NOT IT WILL BE DONE THUS IN ISRAEL MAY NOT YOU DO <OBJ.> THE DISGRACEFUL FOLLY <THE> THIS 12“No, my brother!” she cried “Do not violate me, for such a thing should never be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing!
13AND I WHERE? WILL I BRING <OBJ.> REPROACH MY AND YOU YOU WILL BE LIKE ONE OF THE FOOLS IN ISRAEL AND NOW SPEAK PLEASE TO THE KING FOR NOT HE WILL WITHHOLD ME FROM YOU 13Where could I ever take my shame? And you would be like one of the fools in Israel! Please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”
14AND NOT HE WAS WILLING TO LISTEN TO VOICE HER AND HE WAS STRONG MORE THAN HER AND HE HUMBLED HER AND HE LAY WITH WITH <THE> HER 14But Amnon refused to listen to her, and being stronger, he violated her and lay with her.
15AND HE HATED HER AMNON HATRED GREAT VERY THAT [WAS] GREAT THE HATRED WHICH HE HATED HER MORE THAN [THE] LOVE WHICH HE HAD LOVED HER AND HE SAID TO <THE> HER AMNON GET UP GO 15Then Amnon hated Tamar with such intensity that his hatred was greater than the love he previously had. “Get up!” he said to her “Be gone!”
16AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HIM MAY NOT [THE] CAUSES OF THE EVIL <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS [BE] MORE THAN [THE] OTHER WHICH YOU HAVE DONE WITH ME TO SEND AWAY ME AND NOT HE WAS WILLING TO LISTEN TO <THE> HER 16“No,” she replied “sending me away is worse than this great wrong you have already done to me!” But he refused to listen to her.
17AND HE SUMMONED <OBJ.> YOUNG MAN HIS [WHO] SERVED HIM AND HE SAID SEND AWAY PLEASE <OBJ.> THIS [WOMAN] FROM WITH <THE> ME THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS AND LOCK THE DOOR AFTER HER 17Instead, he called to his attendant and said, “Throw this woman out and bolt the door behind her!”
18AND [WAS] ON HER A LONG GARMENT OF PALMS AND SOLES FOR THUS THEY WORE [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE KING THE VIRGINS ROBES AND HE MADE GO OUT <OBJ.> HER SERVANT HIS THE OUTSIDE AND HE LOCKED THE DOOR AFTER HER 18So Amnon’s attendant threw her out and bolted the door behind her. 19AND SHE TOOK TAMAR ASH[ES] ON HEAD HER AND [THE] LONG GARMENT OF THE PALMS AND SOLES WHICH [WAS] ON HER SHE TORE AND SHE PUT HAND HER ON HEAD HER AND SHE WENT CONTINUOUSLY <TO GO> AND SHE CRIED OUT 19And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore her robe. And putting her hand on her head, she went away crying aloud.
20AND HE SAID TO HER ABSALOM BROTHER HER ¿ AMNON BROTHER YOUR HAS HE BEEN WITH YOU AND NOW O SISTER MY KEEP SILENT [IS] BROTHER YOUR HE MAY NOT YOU SET <OBJ.> HEART YOUR TO THE MATTER <THE> THIS AND SHE DWELT TAMAR <AND> A DESOLATE [WOMAN] [THE] HOUSE OF ABSALOM BROTHER HER 20Her brother Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar lived as a desolate woman in the house of her brother Absalom.
21AND THE KING DAVID HE HEARD <OBJ.> ALL THE THINGS <THE> THESE AND IT BURNED TO <THE> HIM EXCEEDINGLY 21When King David heard all this he was furious.*NoteCloseDSS and LXX include But he would not punish his son Amnon, because he loved him, since he was his firstborn.
22AND NOT HE SPOKE ABSALOM WITH AMNON <TO> FROM BAD AND UNTO GOOD FOR HE HATED ABSALOM <OBJ.> AMNON ON [THE] THING <OF> THAT HE HAD HUMBLED <OBJ.> TAMAR SISTER HIS 22And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad, because he hated Amnon for violating his sister Tamar.
23AND IT WAS TO TWO YEARS DAYS AND THEY BELONGED SHEARERS TO ABSALOM AT BAAL HAZOR WHICH [IS] NEAR EPHRAIM AND HE INVITED ABSALOM <TO> ALL [THE] SONS OF THE KING Absalom’s Revenge on Amnon 23Two years later when Absalom’s sheepshearers were at Baal-hazor near Ephraim, he invited all the sons of the king.
24AND HE WENT ABSALOM TO THE KING AND HE SAID HERE! PLEASE SHEARERS [BELONG] TO SERVANT YOUR LET HIM GO PLEASE THE KING AND SERVANTS HIS WITH SERVANT YOUR 24And he went to the king and said, “Your servant has just hired shearers. Will the king and his servants please come with me?”
25AND HE SAID THE KING TO ABSALOM MAY [WE] NOT O SON MY MAY NOT PLEASE WE GO ALL OF US AND NOT WE WILL BE HEAVY ON YOU AND HE URGED <IN> <THE> HIM AND NOT HE WAS WILLING TO GO AND HE BLESSED HIM 25“No, my son,” the king replied “we should not all go, or we would be a burden to you.” Although Absalom urged him, he was not willing to go, but gave him his blessing.
26AND HE SAID ABSALOM AND NOT LET HIM GO PLEASE WITH US AMNON BROTHER MY AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM THE KING <TO> WHY? WILL HE GO WITH YOU 26“If not,” said Absalom, “please let my brother Amnon go with us.” “Why should he go with you?” the king asked
27AND HE URGED <IN> <THE> HIM ABSALOM AND HE SENT WITH HIM <OBJ.> AMNON AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] SONS OF THE KING 27But Absalom urged him, so the king sent Amnon and the rest of his sons.*NoteCloseLXX and Vulgate include And Absalom prepared a feast fit for a king.
28AND HE COMMANDED ABSALOM <OBJ.> SERVANTS HIS <TO> SAYING LOOK PLEASE WHEN IS GOOD [THE] HEART OF AMNON WITH THE WINE AND I WILL SAY TO YOU STRIKE DOWN <OBJ.> AMNON AND YOU WILL KILL <OBJ.> HIM MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID ¿ IN- DEED I I HAVE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU BE STRONG AND BECOME <INTO> SONS OF STRENGTH 28Now Absalom had ordered his young men “Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine, and when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and valiant!”
29AND THEY DID [THE] SERVANTS OF ABSALOM TO AMNON JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED ABSALOM AND THEY AROSE ALL [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND THEY MOUNTED EACH ON MULE HIS AND THEY FLED 29So Absalom’s young men did to Amnon just as Absalom had ordered. Then all the other sons of the king got up, and each one fled on his mule.
30AND IT WAS THEY [WERE] ON THE WAY AND THE REPORT IT CAME TO DAVID <TO> SAYING HE HAS STRUCK DOWN ABSALOM <OBJ.> ALL [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND NOT HE IS LEFT OF <THE> THEM ONE 30While they were on the way, a report reached David: “Absalom has struck down all the sons of the king; not one of them is left!”
31AND HE AROSE THE KING AND HE TORE <OBJ.> GARMENTS HIS AND HE LAY DOWN [THE] GROUND TOWARDS AND ALL SERVANTS HIS [WERE] STANDING TORN OF GARMENTS 31Then the king stood up, tore his clothes, and lay down on the ground. And all his servants stood by with their clothes torn.
32AND HE ANSWERED JONADAB [THE] SON OF SHIMEAH [THE] BROTHER OF DAVID AND HE SAID MAY NOT HE SAY LORD MY <OBJ.> ALL THE YOUNG MEN [THE] SONS OF THE KING THEY HAVE KILLED FOR AMNON TO ONLY HIM HE HAS DIED FOR ON [THE] MOUTH OF ABSALOM IT WAS DETERMINED FROM [THE] DAY HUMBLED HE <OBJ.> TAMAR SISTER HIS 32But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact, Absalom has planned this since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.
33AND THEREFORE MAY NOT HE SET LORD MY THE KING TO HEART HIS A WORD <TO> SAYING ALL [THE] SONS OF THE KING THEY HAVE DIED THAT AMNON TO ONLY HIM HE HAS DIED 33So now, my lord the king, do not take to heart the report that all the sons of the king are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
34AND HE FLED ABSALOM AND HE LIFTED UP THE SERVANT WHO KEPT WATCH <OBJ.> EYES HIS AND HE SAW AND THERE! A PEOPLE NUMEROUS [WAS] COMING FROM [THE] ROAD BEHIND HIM AT THE DESCENT AND HE WENT THE WATCHMAN AND HE TOLD TO THE KING AND HE SAID MEN I SAW [WERE] GOING DOWN FROM DIRECTION OF HORONAIM FROM [THE] SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN Absalom Flees to Geshur 34Meanwhile, Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming down the road west of him,*NoteCloseOr behind him along the side of the hill. 35AND HE SAID JONADAB TO THE KING THERE! [THE] SONS OF THE KING THEY HAVE COME ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF SERVANT YOUR SO IT HAS HAPPENED 35So Jonadab said to the king, “Look, the sons of the king have arrived! It is just as your servant said.”
36AND IT WAS WHEN FINISHED HE TO SPEAK AND THERE! [THE] SONS OF THE KING THEY CAME AND THEY LIFTED UP VOICE THEIR AND THEY WEPT AND ALSO THE KING AND ALL SERVANTS HIS THEY WEPT A WEEPING A GREAT VERY 36And as he finished speaking, the sons of the king came in, wailing loudly. Then the king and all his servants also wept very bitterly.
37AND ABSALOM HE FLED AND HE WENT TO TALMAI [THE] SON OF AMMIHUD [THE] KING OF GESHUR AND HE MOURNED ON SON HIS ALL THE DAYS 37Now Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But David mourned for his son every day.
38AND ABSALOM HE FLED AND HE WENT GESHUR AND HE WAS THERE THREE YEARS 38After Absalom had fled and gone to Geshur, he stayed there three years.
39AND IT [FEM] COMPLETED DAVID THE KING TO GO OUT AGAINST ABSALOM FOR HE WAS COMFORTED ON AMNON THAT HE HAD DIED 39And King David*NoteCloseMT; DSS and LXX And the spirit of the king longed to go to Absalom,*NoteCloseOr ceased to go out after Absalom for he had been consoled over Amnon’s death.
