27WHEN TWO YEARS HOWEVER HAVING BEEN COMPLETED HE RECEIVED [AS] SUCCESSOR <THE> FELIX PORCIUS FESTUS, WISHING THEN FAVOR TO ACQUIRE FOR HIMSELF WITH THE JEWS <THE> FELIX LEFT <THE> PAUL IMPRISONED. 27After two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor Felix left Paul in prison.
1FESTUS THEREFORE HAVING ARRIVED IN THE PROVINCE AFTER THREE DAYS HE WENT UP TO JERUSALEM FROM CAESAREA, Paul’s Trial before Festus 1Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem,
2MADE A PRESENTATION THEN BEFORE HIM THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE CHIEFS OF THE JEWS AGAINST <THE> PAUL AND THEY WERE BEGGING HIM 2where the chief priests and Jewish leaders presented their case against Paul. They urged Festus
3ASKING A FAVOR AGAINST HIM, THAT HE MAY SUMMON HIM TO JERUSALEM, AN AMBUSH FORMING TO EXECUTE HIM ON THE WAY. 3to grant them a concession against Paul by summoning him to Jerusalem, because they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.
4<THE> INDEED THEREFORE FESTUS ANSWERED THAT IS TO BE KEPT <THE> PAUL IN CAESAREA, HE HIMSELF HOWEVER ENSUING WITH SPEED TO SET OUT; 4But Festus replied, Paul is being held in Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon.
5THOSE THEREFORE AMONG YOU HE SAYS [IN] POWER HAVING GONE DOWN TOO, IF ANYTHING THERE IS IN THE MAN WRONG, THEY SHOULD ACCUSE HIM. 5So if this man has done anything wrong, let some of your leaders come down with me and accuse him there. ”
6HAVING SPENT THEN WITH THEM DAYS NOT MORE THAN EIGHT OR TEN, HAVING GONE DOWN TO CAESAREA, ON THE NEXT DAY HAVING SAT ON THE JUDGMENT SEAT HE COMMANDED <THE> PAUL TO BE BROUGHT. 6After spending no more than eight or ten days with them, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat on the judgment seat and ordered that Paul be brought in.
7WHEN WAS ARRIVING THEN HE THEY STOOD AROUND HIM THE FROM JERUSALEM HAVING COME DOWN JEWS MANY AND WEIGHTY CHARGES PRESENTING CONCERNING <THE> PAUL WHICH NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO PROVE, 7When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges that they could not prove.
8<THE> PAUL WAS PRESENTING A DEFENSE OF HIM THAT NEITHER [I SINNED] AGAINST THE LAW OF THE JEWS NOR [I SINNED] AGAINST THE TEMPLE NOR AGAINST CAESAR [IN] ANYTHING HAVE I SINNED. 8Then Paul made his defense: “I have committed no offense against the law of the Jews or against the temple or against Caesar. ”
9<THE> FESTUS HOWEVER WISHING FROM THE JEWS A FAVOR TO LAY, ANSWERING <THE> PAUL SAID; ARE YOU WILLING TO JERUSALEM HAVING GONE UP THERE CONCERNING THESE THINGS TO BE JUDGED BEFORE ME? 9But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem to stand trial before me on these charges? ”
10SAID THEN <THE> PAUL; BEFORE THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CAESAR STANDING I AM, WHERE ME IT BEHOOVES TO BE JUDGED. TO [THE] JEWS NO [THING] I HAVE DONE WRONG, AS ALSO YOU YOURSELF VERY WELL KNOW; Paul Appeals to Caesar 10Paul replied, “I am standing before the judgment seat of Caesar, where I ought to be tried. I have done nothing wrong to the Jews, as you yourself know very well.
11IF INDEED THEREFORE I DO WRONG AND WORTHY OF DEATH HAVE DONE ANYTHING, NOT I DO REFUSE <THE> TO DIE; IF HOWEVER NO [THING] THERE IS OF WHICH THEY [CAN] ACCUSE ME, NO [ONE] ME CAN TO THEM GIVING UP. TO CAESAR I APPEAL! 11If, however, I am guilty of anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die. But if there is no truth to their accusations against me, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar! ”
12THEN <THE> FESTUS HAVING CONFERRED WITH THE COUNCIL ANSWERED; TO CAESAR YOU HAVE APPEALED, TO CAESAR YOU WILL GO! 12Then Festus conferred with his council and replied, “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you will go! ”
13WHEN DAYS NOW HAVING PASSED SOME AGRIPPA THE KING AND BERNICE CAME DOWN TO CAESAREA GREETING <THE> FESTUS. Festus Consults Agrippa 13After several days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice came down to Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus.
14AS NOW MANY DAYS THEY WERE STAYING THERE, <THE> FESTUS TO THE KING LAID BEFORE THE [THINGS] RELATING TO <THE> PAUL SAYING; A MAN CERTAIN THERE IS LEFT BY FELIX [AS] A PRISONER, 14Since they were staying several days, Festus laid out Paul’s case before the king: “There is a certain man whom Felix left in prison.
15CONCERNING WHOM HAVING BEEN OF ME IN JERUSALEM MADE A PRESENTATION THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE ELDERS OF THE JEWS ASKING AGAINST HIM PENALTY; 15While I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and elders of the Jews presented their case and requested a judgment against him.
16TO WHOM I ANSWERED THAT NOT IT IS [THE] CUSTOM WITH ROMANS TO GIVE UP ANY MAN INTO PUNISHMENT BEFORE THAN THE [ONE] BEING ACCUSED TO FACE HE WOULD BE [ABLE] THE ACCUSERS [THE] OPPORTUNITY AND OF DEFENSE HE WOULD HAVE CONCERNING THE ACCUSATION. 16I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand a man over before he has had an opportunity to face his accusers and defend himself against their charges.
17WHEN WERE ASSEMBLING THEREFORE THEY HERE DELAY NO HAVING MADE, ON THE NEXT [DAY] HAVING SAT ON THE JUDGMENT SEAT I COMMANDED TO BE BROUGHT THE MAN; 17So when they came here with me, I did not delay. The next day I sat on the judgment seat and ordered that the man be brought in.
18CONCERNING WHOM HAVING STOOD UP THE ACCUSERS NO CHARGE WERE BRINGING OF WHICH I MYSELF WAS SUSPECT CRIMES; 18But when his accusers rose to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.
19QUESTIONS HOWEVER CERTAIN CONCERNING THE OWN RELIGION THEY HAD AGAINST HIM AND CONCERNING A CERTAIN JESUS HAVING DIED WHOM WAS AFFIRMING <THE> PAUL TO BE ALIVE. 19They only had some contentions with him regarding their own religion and a certain Jesus who had died, but whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
20BEING PERPLEXED NOW I MYSELF INTO <THE> CONCERNING THESE INQUIRY WAS ASKING IF HE WOULD BE WILLING TO GO TO JERUSALEM AND THERE TO BE JUDGED CONCERNING THESE THINGS. 20Since I was at a loss as to how to investigate these matters, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges.
21<THE> BUT PAUL HAVING APPEALED FOR TO BE KEPT HIMSELF FOR THE <THE> EMPEROR'S DECISION I COMMANDED TO BE KEPT HIM UNTIL THAT I MAY RETURN HIM TO CAESAR. 21But when Paul appealed to be held over for the decision of the Emperor, I ordered that he be held until I could send him to Caesar. ”
22AGRIPPA THEN TO <THE> FESTUS WAS SAYING: I WAS WANTING ALSO MYSELF THE MAN TO HEAR. <THE> NOW TOMORROW HE SAYS YOU WILL HEAR HIM. 22Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man myself. ” “Tomorrow you will hear him, ” Festus declared.
23ON THE THEREFORE NEXT DAY WHEN WAS COMING <THE> AGRIPPA AND <THE> BERNICE WITH GREAT POMP AND HAVING ENTERED INTO THE AUDIENCE HALL WITH BOTH TO THE COMMANDERS AND TO MEN WHO IN PROMINENCE BEING IN THE CITY AND WHEN WAS COMMANDING <THE> FESTUS WAS BROUGHT IN <THE> PAUL. Paul before Agrippa and Bernice 23The next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the auditorium, along with the commanders and leading men of the city. And Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.
24AND SAYS <THE> FESTUS; AGRIPPA KING AND ALL YOU WHO [ARE] BEING PRESENT WITH US MEN, YOU SEE THIS ONE CONCERNING WHOM ALL THE MULTITUDE OF THE JEWS THEY PLEADED WITH ME IN BOTH JERUSALEM AND HERE CRYING [THAT] NOT NEEDING OF HIM TO LIVE NO LONGER. 24Then Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man. The whole Jewish community has petitioned me about him, both here and in Jerusalem, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.
25I MYSELF HOWEVER HAVING GRASPED NOTHING WORTHY HIM OF DEATH TO HAVE DONE, AND HIMSELF AND OF THIS ONE HAVING APPEALED TO THE EMPEROR I DETERMINED TO SEND HIM. 25But I found he had done nothing worthy of death, and since he has now appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.
26CONCERNING WHOM DEFINITE ANYTHING TO WRITE <THE> TO [MY] LORD NOT I HAVE, THEREFORE I HAVE BROUGHT HIM BEFORE YOU ALL AND ESPECIALLY BEFORE YOU, KING AGRIPPA, SO THAT WHEN THE EXAMINATION HAVING TAKEN PLACE I MAY HAVE SOMETHING I MAY WRITE; 26I have nothing definite to write to our sovereign about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after this inquiry I may have something to write.
27ABSURD FOR TO ME IT SEEMS [IN] SENDING A PRISONER NOT ALSO THE AGAINST HIM CHARGES TO SPECIFY. 27For it seems unreasonable to me to send on a prisoner without specifying the charges against him. ”
