44AND THE REST SOME INDEED ON BOARDS, SOME HOWEVER ON THINGS <THE> FROM THE SHIP. AND THUS IT CAME TO PASS THAT ALL BEING SAVED TO THE LAND. 44The rest were to follow on planks and various parts of the ship. In this way everyone was brought safely to land.
1AND HAVING BEEN SAVED THEN WE FOUND OUT THAT MALTA THE ISLAND IS CALLED; Ashore on Malta 1Once we were safely ashore, we learned that the island was called Malta.
2<THE> AND THE NATIVES WERE SHOWING NOT [JUST] THE ORDINARY KINDNESS TO US; HAVING KINDLED FOR A FIRE THEY RECEIVED ALL OF US BECAUSE OF THE RAIN WHICH ALREADY COMING ON AND BECAUSE OF THE COLD. 2The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They kindled a fire and welcomed all of us because it was raining and cold.
3WHEN HAVING GATHERED NOW <THE> PAUL OF STICKS SOME QUANTITY AND HAVING LAID [THEM] ON THE FIRE A VIPER OUT FROM THE HEAT HAVING COME FASTENED ON THE HAND OF HIM. 3Paul gathered a bundle of sticks, and as he laid them on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself to his hand.
4WHEN THEN SAW THE NATIVES HANGING THE BEAST FROM THE HAND OF HIM, TO ONE ANOTHER THEY WERE SAYING: BY ALL MEANS A MURDERER IS <THE> MAN THIS, WHOM HAVING BEEN SAVED FROM THE SEA <THE> JUSTICE TO LIVE NOT HAS PERMITTED. 4When the islanders saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “Surely this man is a murderer. Although he was saved from the sea, Justice*NoteCloseGreek Dike; that is, the Greek goddess of justice has not allowed him to live. ”
5THE [ONE] INDEED THEN HAVING SHAKEN OFF THE CREATURE INTO THE FIRE HE SUFFERED NO [THING] INJURIOUS. 5But Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.
6<THE> BUT THEY WERE EXPECTING HIM TO BE ABOUT TO BECOME INFLAMED OR TO FALL DOWN SUDDENLY DEAD; A WHILE GREAT HOWEVER WHEN THEY ARE WAITING AND SEEING NOTHING AMISS TO HIM HAPPENING HAVING CHANGED THEIR OPINION THEY WERE DECLARINGING HIM TO BE A GOD. 6The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
7IN NOW THE [PARTS] AROUND THE PLACE THAT [ONE] WERE LANDS [BELONGING] TO THE CHIEF OF THE ISLAND, NAMED PUBLIUS, WHO HAVING RECEIVED US THREE DAYS HOSPITABLY ENTERTAINED [US]. 7Nearby stood an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us and entertained us hospitably for three days.
8IT CAME TO PASS THEN THE FATHER <THE> OF PUBLIUS WITH FEVERS AND WITH DYSENTERY OPPRESSED [WAS] LYING; TO WHOM <THE> PAUL HAVING ENTERED AND HAVING PRAYED, HAVING LAID THE HANDS ON HIM, HEALED HIM. 8The father of Publius was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after praying and placing his hands on him, he healed the man.
9OF THIS THEN HAVING TAKEN PLACE ALSO THE REST <THE> IN THE ISLAND HAVING INFIRMITIES WERE COMING AND WERE HEALED; 9After this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured as well.
10WHO ALSO WITH MANY HONORS HONORED US, AND ON SETTING SAIL THEY LAID ON [US] THE [THINGS] FOR THE NEEDS. 10The islanders honored us in many ways and supplied our needs when we were ready to sail.
11AFTER THEN THREE MONTHS WE SET OUT IN A SHIP HAVING WINTERED IN THE ISLAND, ALEXANDRIAN, WITH A FIGUREHEAD OF [THE] DIOSCURI; Paul Arrives in Italy 11After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered in the island. It had the Twin Brothers*NoteCloseGreek Dioscuri; that is, the Greek gods Castor and Pollux as a figurehead.
12AND HAVING PUT IN AT SYRACUSE WE STAYED DAYS THREE, 12Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
13FROM WHERE HAVING TAKEN OFF WE ARRIVED AT RHEGIUM AND AFTER ONE DAY WHEN WAS COMONG ON A SOUTH WIND ON THE SECOND DAY WE CAME TO PUTEOLI; 13From there we weighed anchor and came to Rhegium. After one day, a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at Puteoli.
14WHERE HAVING FOUND [SOME] BROTHERS WE WERE ENTREATED WITH THEM TO REMAIN DAYS SEVEN; AND SO TO <THE> ROME WE CAME. 14There we found some brothers who invited us to spend the week with them. And so we came to Rome.
15AND FROM THERE THE BROTHERS HAVING HEARD THE [THINGS] CONCERNING US THEY CAME OUT TO MEET US AS FAR AS OF APPIUS [THE] MARKET AND [THE] THREE TAVERNS, WHOM HAVING SEEN <THE> PAUL HAVING GIVEN THANKS <THE> TO GOD TOOK COURAGE. 15The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as the Forum of Appius*NoteCloseThe Forum of Appius was about 43 miles or 70 kilometers from Rome. and the Three Taverns*NoteCloseThe Three Taverns was about 35 miles or 57 kilometers from Rome. to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave thanks to God.
16WHEN NOW WE CAME TO ROME, THE CENTURION DELIVERED <THE> PRISONERS TO THE COMMANDERS WAS ALLOWED <THE> NOW PAUL TO STAY BY HIMSELF WITH WHO IS GUARDING HIM SOLDIER. 17IT CAME TO PASS THEN AFTER DAYS THREE CALLING TOGETHER <THE> HE THOSE BEING OF THE JEWS LEADERS; WHEN THEY WERE ASSEMBLING THEN THEY HE WAS SAYING TO THEM; I MYSELF, MEN BROTHERS NO [THING] AGAINST HAVING DONE THE PEOPLE OR AGAINST THE CUSTOMS <THE> OF OUR FATHERS, A PRISONER FROM JERUSALEM WAS DELIVERED INTO THE HANDS OF THE ROMANS, 17After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was taken prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
18WHO HAVING EXAMINED ME THEY WERE WANTING TO LET [ME] GO ON ACCOUNT OF <THE> NOT ONE CAUSE OF DEATH EXISTING IN ME MYSELF; 18They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me.
19WHEN WERE OBJECTING HOWEVER THE JEWS I WAS COMPELLED TO APPEAL TO CAESAR NOT AS IF THE NATION OF MINE HAVING ANYTHING TO LAY AGAINST. 19But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, even though I have no charge to bring against my nation.
20FOR THIS THEREFORE <THE> CAUSE I HAVE CALLED YOU TO SEE AND TO SPEAK TO [YOU]; BECAUSE OF FOR THE HOPE <THE> OF ISRAEL <THE> CHAIN THIS I HAVE AROUND [ME]. 20So for this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain. ”
21<THE> AND TO HIM THEY SAID; WE OURSELVES NEITHER LETTERS CONCERNING YOU RECEIVED FROM <THE> JUDEA, NOR HAVING ARRIVED ANY OF THE BROTHERS REPORTED OR HE SAID ANYTHING CONCERNING YOU EVIL. 21The leaders replied “We have not received any letters about you from Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you.
22WE DEEM IT WORTHY HOWEVER FROM YOU TO HEAR WHAT YOU THINK; CONCERNING TRULY FOR <THE> SECT THIS KNOWN TO US IT IS THAT EVERYWHERE IT IS SPOKEN AGAINST. 22But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect. ”
23HAVING APPOINTED THEN TO HIM A DAY CAME TO HIM TO THE LODGING MANY, TO WHOM HE WAS EXPOUNDING FULLY TESTIFYING TO THE KINGDOM <THE> OF GOD, PERSUADING THEN THEM <THE> CONCERNING <THE> JESUS FROM BOTH THE LAW OF MOSES AND THE PROPHETS FROM MORNING TO EVENING. 23So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He expounded to them from morning to evening, testifying about the kingdom of God and persuading them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
24AND SOME INDEED WERE PERSUADED BY THE [THINGS] HE IS SPEAKING, SOME HOWEVER WERE DISBELIEVING. 24Some of them were convinced by what he said, but others refused to believe.
25DISCORDANT THEN BEING WITH ONE ANOTHER THEY WERE LEAVING WHEN WAS SPEAKING <THE> PAUL DECLARATION ONE THAT RIGHTLY THE SPIRIT <THE> HOLY SPOKE THROUGH ISAIAH THE PROPHET TO THE FATHERS OF YOU 25They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:
26HE IS SAYING: DO GO TO <THE> PEOPLE THIS AND DO SAY; IN HEARING YOU WILL HEAR AND CERTAINLY NOT MAY UNDERSTAND, AND IN LOOKING YOU WILL LOOK AND CERTAINLY NOT MAY PERCEIVE; 26‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. ”
27HAS GROWN DULL FOR THE HEART OF THE PEOPLE THIS, AND WITH THE EARS BARELY THEY HEAR AND THE EYES OF THEM THEY HAVE CLOSED; OTHERWISE THEY MAY SEE WITH THE EYES AND WITH THE EARS THEY MAY HEAR AND WITH THE HEART THEY MAY UNDERSTAND AND MAY TURN AND I WILL HEAL THEM.’ 27For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. 30HE ABIDED THEN <THE> PAUL TWO YEARS WHOLE IN HIS OWN RENTED HOUSE AND WAS WELCOMING ALL THOSE COMING UNTO HIM 30Paul stayed there two full years in his own rented house, welcoming all who came to visit him.
31PROCLAIMING THE KINGDOM <THE> OF GOD AND TEACHING THE [THINGS] CONCERNING THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WITH ALL BOLDNESS UNHINDEREDLY. 31Boldly and freely he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
