1IN YEAR THREE OF [THE] REIGN OF JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH HE CAME NEBUCHADNEZZAR [THE] KING OF BABYLON JERUSALEM AND HE LAID SIEGE ON IT Daniel Removed to Babylon 1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2AND HE GAVE [THE] LORD IN HAND HIS <OBJ.> JEHOIAKIM [THE] KING OF JUDAH AND SOME OF [THE] END OF [THE] VESSELS OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> GOD AND HE BROUGHT THEM [THE] LAND OF SHINAR [THE] HOUSE OF GOD HIS AND <OBJ.> THE VESSELS HE BROUGHT [THE] HOUSE OF [THE] TREASURY OF GOD HIS 2And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried these off to the land of Shinar,*NoteCloseThat is, Babylonia to the house of his god, where he put them in the treasury of his god.
3AND HE SAID THE KING TO ASHPENAZ [THE] CHIEF OF OFFICIALS HIS TO BRING SOME OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND SOME OF [THE] OFFSPRING OF <THE> ROYALTY AND SOME OF THE NOBLES 3Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family*NoteCloseHebrew from the seed of the kingdom and the nobility—
4YOUTHS WHOM NOT [WAS] IN THEM ANY BLEMISH AND GOOD OF APPEARANCE AND HAVING INSIGHT IN ALL WISDOM AND KNOWING <OF> KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING <OF> KNOWLEDGE AND WHOM ABILITY [WAS] IN THEM TO STAND IN [THE] PALACE OF THE KING AND TO TEACH THEM [THE] WRITING AND [THE] TONGUE OF [THE] CHALDEANS 4young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace— and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians
5AND HE ASSIGNED TO THEM THE KING [THE] MATTER OF A DAY IN DAY ITS SOME OF [THE] DELI- -CACI[ES] OF THE KING AND SOME OF [THE] WINE OF DRINK HIS AND TO BRING UP THEM YEARS THREE AND FROM [THE] END THEIR THEY WILL STAND <TO> BEFORE THE KING 5The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service.
6AND HE WAS AMONG <THE> THEM FROM [THE] PEOPLE OF JUDAH DANIEL HANANIAH MISHAEL AND AZARIAH 6Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7AND HE ASSIGNED TO THEM [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS NAMES AND HE ASSIGNED TO DANIEL BELTESHAZZAR AND TO HANANIAH SHADRACH AND TO MISHAEL MESHACH AND TO AZARIAH ABED- -NEGO 7The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8AND HE SET DANIEL ON HEART HIS THAT NOT HE DEFILED HIMSELF WITH [THE] DELICACI[ES] OF THE KING AND WITH [THE] WINE OF DRINK HIS AND HE REQUESTED FROM [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS THAT NOT HE WILL DEFILE HIMSELF Daniel’s Faithfulness 8But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself.
9AND HE GAVE <THE> GOD <OBJ.> DANIEL <TO> FAVOR AND <TO> COMPASSION<S> <TO> BEFORE [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS 9Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief official,
10AND HE SAID [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS TO DANIEL [AM] FEARING I <OBJ.> MASTER MY THE KING WHO HE HAS ASSIGNED <OBJ.> FOOD YOUR AND <OBJ.> DRINK YOUR THAT <TO> WHY? WILL HE SEE <OBJ.> FACES YOUR LOOKING THIN MORE THAN THE YOUTHS WHO [ARE] ABOUT AGE YOUR AND YOU WILL ENDANGER <OBJ.> HEAD MY TO THE KING 10but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would endanger my head before the king!”
11AND HE SAID DANIEL TO THE GUARDIAN WHOM HE HAD ASSIGNED [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS OVER DANIEL HANANIAH MISHAEL AND AZARIAH 11Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12PUT TO [THE] TEST PLEASE <OBJ.> SERVANTS YOUR DAYS TEN SO LET PEOPLE GIVE TO US SOME OF THE VEGETABLES SO WE MAY EAT AND WATER SO WE MAY DRINK 12“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13AND THEY MAY APPEAR <TO> BEFORE YOU APPEARANCE OUR AND [THE] APPEARANCE OF THE YOUTHS WHO ARE EATING <OBJ.> [THE] DELICACI[ES] OF THE KING AND JUST AS YOU WILL SEE DEAL WITH SERVANTS YOUR 13Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
14AND HE LISTENED TO THEM TO THE THING <THE> THIS AND HE PUT TO [THE] TEST THEM DAYS TEN 14So he consented to this and tested them for ten days.
15AND FROM [THE] END OF DAYS TEN IT APPEARED APPEARANCE THEIR GOOD AND FAT OF FLESH MORE THAN ALL THE YOUTHS WHO WERE EATING <OBJ.> [THE] DELICACI[ES] OF THE KING 15And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than all the young men who were eating the king’s food.
16AND HE WAS THE GUARDIAN TAKING AWAY <OBJ.> DELICACI[ES] THEIR AND [THE] WINE OF DRINK THEIR AND GIVING TO <THE> THEM VEGETABLES 16So the steward continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables instead.
17AND THE YOUTHS <THE> THESE [THE] FOUR OF THEM HE GAVE TO THEM <THE> GOD KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT IN ALL WRITING AND WISDOM AND DANIEL HE UNDERSTOOD <IN> EVERY VISION AND DREAMS Daniel’s Wisdom 17To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And Daniel had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams.
18AND <TO> FROM [THE] END OF THE DAYS WHICH HE HAD SAID THE KING TO BRING THEM AND HE BROUGHT THEM [THE] CHIEF OF THE OFFICIALS <TO> BEFORE NEBUCHADNEZZAR 18Now at the end of the time specified by the king the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19AND HE SPOKE WITH THEM THE KING AND NOT HE WAS FOUND ANY OF ALL OF THEM LIKE DANIEL HANANIAH MISHAEL AND AZARIAH AND THEY STOOD <TO> BEFORE THE KING 19And the king spoke with them, and among all the young men he found no one equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king’s service.
20AND EVERY MATTER OF WISDOM OF UNDERSTANDING WHICH HE SOUGHT FROM THEM THE KING AND HE FOUND THEM TEN HANDS ABOVE ALL THE SOOTHSAYER-PRIESTS THE CONJURERS WHO [WERE] IN ALL KINGDOM HIS 20In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
21AND HE WAS DANIEL UNTIL YEAR ONE OF CYRUS THE KING 21And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
