22THAT HE WILL SPEAK THE PROPHET IN [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH AND NOT IT WILL HAPPEN THE THING AND NOT IT WILL COME THAT [IS] THE WORD WHICH NOT HE HAS SPOKEN IT YAHWEH WITH PRESUMPTION HE HAS SPOKEN IT THE PROPHET NOT YOU WILL BE AFRAID FROM HIM 22When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
1IF HE WILL CUT OFF YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> THE NATIONS WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> LAND THEIR AND YOU WILL DISPOSSESS THEM AND YOU WILL DWELL IN CITIES THEIR AND IN HOUSES THEIR Cities of Refuge (Numbers 35:9–34; Deuteronomy 4:41–43; Joshua 20:1–9) 1When the LORD your God has cut off the nations whose land He is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their cities and houses,
2THREE CITIES YOU WILL SET APART FOR <THE> YOURSELF IN [THE] MIDST OF LAND YOUR WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT 2then you are to set apart for yourselves three cities within the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
3YOU WILL ESTABLISH FOR <THE> YOURSELF THE JOURNEY AND YOU WILL DIVIDE INTO THREE <OBJ.> [THE] TERRITORY OF LAND YOUR WHICH HE WILL GIVE AS AN INHERITANCE YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND IT WILL BE TO FLEE THERE TOWARDS EVERY KILLER 3You are to build roads for yourselves*NoteCloseOr You are to survey the way and divide into three regions the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that any manslayer can flee to these cities.
4AND THIS [WILL BE] [THE] CASE OF THE KILLER WHO HE WILL FLEE THERE TOWARDS AND HE WILL LIVE WHO HE WILL STRIKE <OBJ.> COMPANION HIS WITH NOT KNOWLEDGE AND HE NOT [WAS] HATING <TO> <THE> HIM FROM YESTERDAY [THE] THIRD DAY 4Now this is the situation regarding the manslayer who flees to one of these cities to save his life, having killed his neighbor accidentally without intending to harm him:
5AND WHO HE WILL GO WITH COMPANION HIS IN THE FOREST TO CUT WOOD<S> AND IT WILL BE IMPELLED HAND HIS BY THE AXE TO CUT DOWN THE TREE AND IT WILL SLIP OFF THE IRON FROM THE TREE AND IT WILL FIND <OBJ.> COMPANION HIS AND HE WILL DIE HE HE WILL FLEE TO ONE OF THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND HE WILL LIVE 5If he goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut timber and swings his axe to chop down a tree, but the blade flies off the handle and strikes and kills his neighbor, he may flee to one of these cities to save his life.
6LEST HE SHOULD PURSUE [THE] AVENGER OF <THE> BLOOD AFTER THE KILLER FOR IT WILL BE HOT HEART HIS AND HE WILL OVERTAKE HIM FOR IT WILL BE GREAT THE JOURNEY AND HE WILL STRIKE HIM LIFE AND [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM NOT A SENTENCE OF DEATH FOR NOT [WAS] HATING HE <TO> <THE> HIM FROM YESTERDAY [THE] THIRD DAY 6Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the manslayer in a rage overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any harm.
7THERE- -FORE I [AM] COMMANDING YOU <TO> SAYING THREE CITIES YOU WILL SET APART FOR <THE> YOURSELF 7This is why I am commanding you to set apart for yourselves three cities.
8AND IF HE WILL ENLARGE YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> TERRITORY YOUR JUST AS HE SWORE TO ANCESTORS YOUR AND HE WILL GIVE TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND WHICH HE SPOKE TO GIVE TO ANCESTORS YOUR 8And if the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land He promised them,
9IF YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> ALL THE COMMANDMENT <THE> THIS TO DO IT WHICH I [AM] COMMANDING YOU THIS DAY TO LOVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND TO WALK IN WAYS HIS ALL THE DAYS AND YOU WILL ADD FOR <THE> YOURSELF AGAIN THREE CITIES TO THE THREE [CITIES] <THE> THESE 9and if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you today, loving the LORD your God and walking in His ways at all times, then you are to add three more cities to these three.
10AND NOT IT WILL BE SHED BLOOD INNOCENT IN [THE] MIDST OF LAND YOUR WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU AN INHERITANCE AND IT WILL BE ON YOU BLOOD<S> 10Thus innocent blood will not be shed in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.
11AND IF HE WILL BE ANYONE HATING <TO> NEIGHBOR HIS AND HE WILL LIE IN WAIT FOR <THE> HIM AND HE WILL RISE UP ON HIM AND HE WILL STRIKE HIM LIFE AND HE WILL DIE AND HE WILL FLEE TO ONE OF THE CITIES <THE> THESE 11If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait attacks him and kills him, and then flees to one of these cities,
12AND THEY WILL SEND [THE] ELDERS OF CITY HIS AND THEY WILL TAKE <OBJ.> HIM FROM THERE AND THEY WILL GIVE <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] HAND OF [THE] AVENGER OF <THE> BLOOD AND HE WILL DIE 12the elders of his city must send for him, bring him back, and hand him over to the avenger of blood to die.
13NOT IT WILL LOOK WITH PITY EYE YOUR ON HIM AND YOU WILL REMOVE [THE] BLOOD OF THE INNOCENT [PERSON] FROM ISRAEL AND IT WILL BE GOOD TO <THE> YOU 13You must show him no pity. You are to purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, that it may go well with you.
14NOT YOU WILL DISPLACE [THE] BOUNDARY OF NEIGHBOR YOUR WHICH THEY SET BOUNDS ANCESTORS IN INHERITANCE YOUR WHICH YOU WILL INHERIT IN THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT 14You must not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, which was set up by your ancestors to mark the inheritance you shall receive in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
15NOT HE WILL STAND A WITNESS ONE IN ANYONE TO ANY INIQUITY AND TO ANY SIN IN ANY SIN WHICH HE WILL SIN ON [THE] MOUTH OF TWO WITNESSES OR ON [THE] MOUTH OF THREE WITNESSES IT WILL STAND A MATTER The Testimony of Two or Three Witnesses (Matthew 18:15–20) 15A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing or sin against a man, regardless of what offense he may have committed. 16THAT HE WILL STAND A WITNESS OF INJUSTICE IN ANYONE TO TESTIFY AGAINST <THE> HIM REBELLION 16If a false witness testifies against someone, accusing him of a crime,
17AND THEY WILL STAND [THE] TWO THE PEOPLE WHOM [BELONGS] TO <THE> THEM THE DISPUTE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH <TO> BEFORE THE PRIESTS AND THE JUDGES WHO THEY WILL BE IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE 17both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time.
18AND THEY WILL INVESTIGATE THE JUDGES THOROUGHLY <DO WELL> AND THERE! [IS] A WITNESS OF FALSEHOOD THE WITNESS FALSEHOOD HE HAS TESTIFIED AGAINST COUNTRYMAN HIS 18The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is proven to be a liar who has falsely accused his brother,
19AND YOU WILL DO TO <THE> HIM JUST AS HE PLANNED TO DO TO COUNTRYMAN HIS AND YOU WILL REMOVE THE EVIL FROM MIDST YOUR 19you must do to him as he intended to do to his brother. So you must purge the evil from among you.*NoteCloseCited in 1 Corinthians 5:13
20AND THE REMAINDER THEY WILL HEAR AND THEY MAY FEAR AND NOT THEY WILL REPEAT TO DO AGAIN LIKE THE THING <THE> EVIL <THE> THIS IN MIDST YOUR 20Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you.
