29AND WE REMAINED IN THE VALLEY OPPOSITE TO BETH PEOR 29So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
1AND NOW O ISRAEL LISTEN TO THE STATUTES AND TO THE JUDGMENTS WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO TEACH <OBJ.> YOU TO OBSERVE SO THAT YOU MAY LIVE AND YOU WILL GO AND YOU WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ANCESTORS YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO YOU An Exhortation to Obedience (Deuteronomy 11:1–7) 1Hear now, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live and may enter and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
2NOT YOU MUST ADD TO THE WORD WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO COMMAND <OBJ.> YOU AND NOT YOU MUST DIMINISH FROM IT TO KEEP <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHICH I [AM] ABOUT TO COMMAND <OBJ.> YOU 2You must not add to or subtract from what I command you, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you.
3OWN EYES YOUR [ARE] THE [ONES WHICH] SAW <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE DID YAHWEH AT BAAL PEOR FOR EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO HE WALKED AFTER BAAL PEOR HE DESTROYED HIM YAHWEH GOD YOUR FROM MIDST YOUR 3Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all who followed Baal of Peor.
4AND YOU WHO WERE CLINGING ON YAHWEH GOD YOUR [ARE] ALIVE ALL OF YOU THIS DAY 4But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive to this day, every one of you.
5SEE I HAVE TAUGHT <OBJ.> YOU STATUTES AND JUDGMENTS JUST AS HE COMMANDED ME YAHWEH GOD MY TO DO THUS IN [THE] MIDST OF THE LAND WHERE YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO GO THERE TOWARDS TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT 5See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.
6AND YOU WILL TAKE CARE AND YOU WILL OBSERVE [THEM] FOR THAT [WILL BE] WISDOM YOUR AND UNDERSTANDING YOUR TO [THE] EYES OF THE PEOPLES WHICH THEY WILL HEAR! <OBJ.> ALL THE STATUTES <THE> THESE AND THEY WILL SAY CERTAINLY [IS] A PEOPLE WISE AND UNDERSTANDING THE NATION <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS 6Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
7FOR WHO? [IS] A NATION GREAT WHICH [BELONGS] TO IT A GOD NEAR TO IT LIKE YAHWEH GOD OUR IN ALL CALLING WE TO HIM 7For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
8AND WHO? [IS] A NATION GREAT WHICH [BELONGS] TO IT STATUTES AND JUDGMENTS RIGHTEOUS LIKE ALL THE LAW <THE> THIS WHICH I [AM] SETTING <TO> BEFORE YOU THIS DAY 8And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you today?
9ONLY TAKE HEED TO YOURSELF AND GUARD SELF YOUR EXCEEDINGLY LEST YOU SHOULD FORGET <OBJ.> THE THINGS WHICH THEY HAVE SEEN EYES YOUR AND LEST THEY SHOULD DEPART FROM HEART YOUR ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE YOUR AND YOU WILL MAKE KNOWN THEM TO CHILDREN YOUR AND TO [THE] CHILDREN OF CHILDREN YOUR 9Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren.
10[THE] DAY WHEN YOU STOOD <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH GOD YOUR AT HOREB WHEN SAID YAHWEH TO ME ASSEMBLE TO ME <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE SO I MAY MAKE HEAR THEM <OBJ.> WORDS MY THAT THEY WILL LEARN! TO FEAR <OBJ.> ME ALL THE DAYS WHICH THEY [WILL BE] ALIVE ON THE LAND AND <OBJ.> CHILDREN THEIR THEY WILL TEACH! 10The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb,*NoteCloseThat is, Mount Sinai, or possibly a mountain in the range containing Mount Sinai; also in verse 15 the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”
11AND YOU DREW NEAR! AND YOU STOOD! UNDER THE MOUNTAIN AND THE MOUNTAIN [WAS] BURNING WITH <THE> FIRE TO [THE] HEART OF THE HEAVENS DARKNESS CLOUD AND THICK DARKNESS 11You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire to the heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.
12AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO YOU FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE A SOUND OF WORDS YOU [WERE] HEARING AND A FORM NOT YOU [WERE] SEEING EXCEPT A VOICE 12And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of the words but saw no form; there was only a voice.
13AND HE DECLARED TO YOU <OBJ.> COVENANT HIS WHICH HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU TO OBSERVE [THE] TEN THE WORDS AND HE INSCRIBED THEM ON TWO TABLETS OF STONE<S> 13He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to follow— the Ten Commandments*NoteCloseHebrew the Ten Words that He wrote on two tablets of stone.
14AND <OBJ.> ME HE COMMANDED YAHWEH AT THE TIME <THE> THAT TO TEACH <OBJ.> YOU STATUTES AND JUDGMENTS TO OBSERVE YOU <OBJ.> THEM IN THE LAND WHERE YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS OVER THERE TOWARDS TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT 14At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
15AND YOU WILL TAKE HEED EXCEEDINGLY TO SELVES YOUR FOR NOT YOU SAW ANY FORM ON [THE] DAY [WHEN] HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO YOU AT HOREB FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE A Warning against Idolatry (Deuteronomy 12:29–32; Ezekiel 6:1–7) 15So since you saw no form of any kind on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at Horeb, be careful
16LEST YOU SHOULD ACT CORRUPTLY! AND YOU WILL MAKE FOR YOURSELVES AN IMAGE OF A FORM OF ANY FIGURE A LIKENESS OF A MALE OR A FEMALE 16that you do not act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,
17A LIKENESS OF ANY ANIMAL WHICH [IS] ON THE EARTH A LIKENESS OF ANY BIRD OF WING WHICH IT FLIES IN THE HEAVENS 17of any beast that is on the earth or bird that flies in the air,
18A LIKENESS OF ANY CREEPING [THING] ON THE GROUND A LIKENESS OF ANY FISH WHICH [IS] IN THE WATERS FROM UNDER TO THE EARTH 18or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below.
19AND LEST YOU SHOULD LIFT UP EYES YOUR THE HEAVENS TOWARDS AND YOU WILL SEE <OBJ.> THE SUN AND <OBJ.> THE MOON AND <OBJ.> THE STARS ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND YOU WILL BE DRAWN ASIDE AND YOU WILL BOW DOWN TO THEM AND YOU WILL SERVE THEM WHICH HE HAS ASSIGNED YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> THEM TO ALL THE PEOPLES UNDER ALL THE HEAVENS 19When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon and stars— all the host of heaven— do not be enticed to bow down and worship what the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.
20AND <OBJ.> YOU HE TOOK YAHWEH AND HE BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] FURNACE OF <THE> IRON FROM EGYPT TO BECOME FOR HIM <INTO> A PEOPLE OF INHERITANCE AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 20Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you are today.
21AND YAHWEH HE WAS ANGRY WITH ME ON WORDS YOUR AND HE SWORE TO NOT TO PASS OVER I <OBJ.> THE JORDAN AND TO NOT TO GO INTO THE LAND <THE> GOOD WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO YOU AN INHERITANCE 21The LORD, however, was angry with me on account of you, and He swore that I would not cross the Jordan to enter the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
22FOR I [AM] ABOUT TO DIE IN THE LAND <THE> THIS NOT I [AM] ABOUT TO PASS OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN AND YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS OVER AND YOU WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> GOOD <THE> THIS 22For I will not be crossing the Jordan, because I must die in this land. But you shall cross over and take possession of that good land.
23TAKE HEED TO YOURSELVES LEST YOU SHOULD FORGET <OBJ.> [THE] COVENANT OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHICH HE HAS MADE WITH YOU AND YOU WILL MAKE FOR YOURSELVES AN IMAGE A FORM OF ANYTHING WHICH HE COMMANDED YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR 23Be careful that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made with you; do not make an idol for yourselves in the form of anything He has forbidden you.
24FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] A FIRE CONSUMING HE A GOD JEALOUS 24For the LORD your God is a consuming fire,*NoteCloseCited in Hebrews 12:29 a jealous God.
25FOR YOU WILL FATHER CHILDREN AND CHILDREN OF CHILDREN AND YOU WILL GROW OLD IN THE LAND AND YOU WILL ACT CORRUPTLY AND YOU WILL MAKE AN IMAGE OF A FORM OF ANYTHING AND YOU WILL DO THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO PROVOKE TO ANGER HIM 25After you have children and grandchildren and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an idol of any form— doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and provoking Him to anger—
26I CALL AS WITNESSES AGAINST YOU THIS DAY <OBJ.> THE HEAVENS AND <OBJ.> THE EARTH THAT CERTAINLY <TO PERISH> YOU WILL PERISH! QUICKLY FROM ON THE LAND WHERE YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN THERE TOWARDS TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT NOT YOU WILL PROLONG! DAYS ON IT FOR UTTERLY <DESTROYED> YOU WILL BE DESTROYED! 26I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live long upon it, but will be utterly destroyed.
27AND HE WILL SCATTER YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU AMONG THE PEOPLES AND YOU WILL BE LEFT MEN OF NUMBER AMONG THE NATIONS WHERE HE WILL DRIVE AWAY YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU THERE TOWARDS 27Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
28AND YOU WILL SERVE THERE GODS [THE] WORK OF [THE] HANDS OF A HUMAN WOOD AND STONE WHICH NOT THEY SEE! AND NOT THEY HEAR! AND NOT THEY EAT! AND NOT THEY SMELL! 28And there you will serve man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.
29AND YOU WILL SEEK FROM THERE <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND YOU WILL FIND [HIM] FOR YOU WILL SEEK HIM WITH ALL HEART YOUR AND WITH ALL BEING YOUR 29But if from there you will seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30WHEN <THE> IT IS DISTRESS TO YOU AND THEY WILL COME UPON YOU ALL THE THINGS <THE> THESE AT [THE] END OF THE DAYS AND YOU WILL RETURN TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND YOU WILL LISTEN TO VOICE HIS 30When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.
31FOR [IS] A GOD COMPASSIONATE YAHWEH GOD YOUR NOT HE WILL ABANDON YOU AND NOT HE WILL DESTROY YOU AND NOT HE WILL FORGET <OBJ.> [THE] COVENANT OF ANCESTORS YOUR WHICH HE SWORE TO THEM 31For the LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers, which He swore to them by oath
32THAT ASK PLEASE TO DAYS FORMER WHICH THEY WERE <TO> BEFORE YOU <TO> FROM THE DAY WHEN HE CREATED GOD HUMANKIND ON THE EARTH AND TO FROM [THE] END OF THE HEAVENS AND TO [THE] END OF THE HEAVENS ¿ HAS IT HAPPENED LIKE THE THING <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS OR ¿ HAS IT BEEN HEARD LIKE IT The LORD Alone Is God 32Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
33¿ HAS IT HEARD A PEOPLE [THE] VOICE OF A GOD SPEAKING FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE JUST AS YOU HAVE HEARD YOU AND HAS IT LIVED? 33Has a people ever heard the voice of God*NoteCloseOr of a god speaking out of the fire, as you have, and lived?
34OR ¿ HAS IT ATTEMPTED A GOD TO COME TO TAKE FOR ITSELF A NATION FROM [THE] MIDST OF A NATION BY TRIALS BY SIGNS AND BY WONDERS AND BY BATTLE AND BY A HAND STRONG AND BY AN ARM OUTSTRETCHED AND BY TERRORS GREAT LIKE ALL THAT HE DID FOR YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR IN EGYPT TO EYES YOUR 34Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation— by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors— as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
35YOU YOU WERE SHOWN TO KNOW THAT YAHWEH HE [IS] <THE> GOD THERE NOT [IS] STILL MORE FROM TO ALONE HIM 35You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
36FROM THE HEAVENS HE CAUSED TO HEAR YOU <OBJ.> VOICE HIS TO DISCIPLINE YOU AND ON THE EARTH HE SHOWED YOU <OBJ.> FIRE HIS <THE> GREAT AND WORDS HIS YOU HEARD FROM [THE] MIDDLE OF THE FIRE 36He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the fire.
37AND BECAUSE THAT HE LOVED <OBJ.> ANCESTORS YOUR AND HE CHOSE <IN> OFFSPRING HIS AFTER HIM AND HE BROUGHT OUT YOU BY OWN PRESENCE HIS BY POWER HIS <THE> GREAT FROM EGYPT 37Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,
38TO DISPOSSESS NATIONS GREAT AND MIGHTY MORE THAN YOU FROM BEFORE YOU TO BRING IN YOU TO GIVE TO YOU <OBJ.> LAND THEIR AN INHERITANCE AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 38to drive out before you nations greater and mightier than you, and to bring you into their land and give it to you for your inheritance, as it is this day.
39AND YOU WILL KNOW THIS DAY AND YOU WILL BRING BACK TO HEART YOUR THAT YAHWEH HE [IS] <THE> GOD IN THE HEAVENS <FROM> ABOVE AND ON THE EARTH <FROM> BENEATH THERE NOT [IS] STILL MORE 39Know therefore this day and take to heart that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
40AND YOU WILL KEEP <OBJ.> STATUTES HIS AND <OBJ.> COMMANDMENTS HIS WHICH I [AM] COMMANDING YOU THIS DAY THAT IT WILL GO WELL FOR YOU AND FOR CHILDREN YOUR AFTER YOU AND SO THAT YOU MAY PROLONG DAYS ON THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO YOU ALL THE DAYS 40Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you today, so that you and your children after you may prosper and that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.
41THEN HE SET APART MOSES THREE CITIES ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN [THE] RISING OF TOWARDS [THE] SUN Cities of Refuge (Numbers 35:9–34; Deuteronomy 19:1–14; Joshua 20:1–9) 41Then Moses set aside three cities across the Jordan to the east
42TO FLEE THERE TOWARDS A KILLER WHO HE WILL KILL <OBJ.> NEIGHBOR HIS WITH NO KNOWLEDGE AND HE NOT [WAS] HATING <TO> HIM FROM YESTERDAY [THE] THIRD DAY AND HE WILL FLEE TO ONE OF THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND HE WILL LIVE 42to which a manslayer could flee after killing his neighbor unintentionally without prior malice. To save one’s own life, he could flee to one of these cities:
43<OBJ.> BEZER IN THE WILDERNESS IN [THE] LAND OF THE PLAIN FOR THE REUBENITE[S] AND <OBJ.> RAMOTH IN <THE> GILEAD FOR THE GADITE[S] AND <OBJ.> GOLAN IN <THE> BASHAN FOR THE MANASSITE[S] 43Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau belonging to the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead belonging to the Gadites, or Golan in Bashan belonging to the Manassites.
44AND THIS [IS] THE LAW WHICH HE SET MOSES <TO> BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL Introduction to the Law 44This is the law that Moses set before the Israelites.
45THESE [ARE] THE TESTIMONIES AND THE STATUTES AND THE JUDGMENTS WHICH HE SPOKE MOSES TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHEN CAME OUT THEY FROM EGYPT 45These are the testimonies, statutes, and ordinances that Moses proclaimed to them after they had come out of Egypt,
46ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN IN THE VALLEY OPPOSITE TO BETH PEOR IN [THE] LAND OF SIHON [THE] KING OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WAS] DWELLING IN HESHBON WHOM HE STRUCK DOWN MOSES AND [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHEN CAME OUT THEY FROM EGYPT 46while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
47AND THEY TOOK POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> LAND HIS AND <OBJ.> [THE] LAND OF OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WAS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN [THE] RISING OF [THE] SUN 47They took possession of the land belonging to Sihon and to Og king of Bashan— the two Amorite kings across the Jordan to the east
48FROM AROER WHICH [IS] ON [THE] EDGE OF [THE] WADI OF ARNON AND TO [THE] MOUNTAIN OF SIYON THAT [IS] HERMON 48extending from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Siyon*NoteCloseOr Sion; Syriac Sirion (that is, Hermon),
49AND ALL THE ARABAH [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN EAST -WARDS AND TO [THE] SEA OF THE ARABAH UNDER [THE] SLOPES OF <THE> PISGAH 49including all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan and as far as the Sea of the Arabah,*NoteCloseThat is, the Dead Sea below the slopes of Pisgah.
