1AND THEY SET OUT ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM [THE] WILDERNESS OF SIN TO JOURNEYINGS THEIR ON [THE] MOUTH OF YAHWEH AND THEY ENCAMPED AT REPHIDIM AND THERE NOT [WAS] WATER TO DRINK THE PEOPLE Water from the Rock (Numbers 20:1–13) 1Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin,*NoteCloseThe geographical name Sin is related to Sinai and should not be mistaken for the English word sin. moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
2AND IT QUARRELED THE PEOPLE WITH MOSES AND THEY SAID GIVE TO <THE> US WATER SO WE MAY DRINK AND HE SAID TO <THE> THEM MOSES WHY? ARE YOU QUARRELING! WITH ME WHY? ARE YOU PUTTING TO [THE] TEST! <OBJ.> YAHWEH 2So the people contended with Moses “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”
3AND IT WAS THIRSTY THERE THE PEOPLE FOR <THE> WATER AND IT GRUMBLED THE PEOPLE ON MOSES AND IT SAID <TO> WHY? THIS DID YOU BRING UP US FROM EGYPT TO PUT TO DEATH <OBJ.> ME AND <OBJ.> CHILDREN MY AND <OBJ.> LIVESTOCK MY BY <THE> THIRST 3But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt— to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
4AND HE CRIED OUT MOSES TO YAHWEH <TO> SAYING WHAT? WILL I DO TO THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS YET A LITTLE AND THEY WILL STONE ME 4Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”
5AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES PASS ON <TO> BEFORE THE PEOPLE AND TAKE WITH YOU SOME OF [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND STAFF YOUR WHICH YOU STRUCK WITH <THE> IT <OBJ.> THE RIVER TAKE IN HAND YOUR AND YOU WILL GO 5And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
6HERE I [WILL BE] STANDING <TO> BEFORE YOU THERE ON THE ROCK AT HOREB AND YOU WILL STRIKE <ON> THE ROCK AND THEY WILL COME OUT FROM IT WATERS AND IT WILL DRINK THE PEOPLE AND HE DID SO MOSES TO [THE] EYES OF [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL 6Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.*NoteCloseHoreb is another name for Sinai. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7AND HE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE MASSAH AND MERIBAH ON [THE] QUARREL OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND BECAUSE PUT TO [THE] TEST THEY <OBJ.> YAHWEH <TO> SAYING ¿ [IS] THERE YAHWEH IN MIDST OUR OR? NOT 7He named the place Massah*NoteCloseMassah means testing. and Meribah*NoteCloseMeribah means quarreling. because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
8AND IT CAME AMALEK AND IT JOINED BATTLE WITH ISRAEL AT REPHIDIM The Defeat of the Amalekites 8After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
9AND HE SAID MOSES TO JOSHUA CHOOSE FOR <THE> US MEN AND GO OUT FIGHT AGAINST AMALEK TOMORROW I [WILL BE] STANDING ON [THE] TOP OF THE HILL AND [THE] STAFF OF <THE> GOD [WILL BE] IN HAND MY 9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”
10AND HE DID JOSHUA JUST AS HE HAD SAID TO <THE> HIM MOSES BY FIGHTING AGAINST AMALEK AND MOSES AARON AND HUR THEY WENT UP [THE] TOP OF THE HILL 10Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11AND IT WAS JUST WHEN HE LIFTED UP MOSES HAND HIS AND IT PREVAILED ISRAEL AND JUST WHEN HE GAVE REST HAND HIS AND IT PREVAILED AMALEK 11As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.
12AND [THE] HANDS OF MOSES [WERE] HEAVY AND THEY TOOK A STONE AND THEY PUT [IT] UNDER HIM AND HE SAT ON IT AND AARON AND HUR THEY SUPPORTED <IN> HANDS HIS FROM THIS ONE AND FROM THIS ONE AND IT WAS HANDS HIS [WERE] STEADINESS UNTIL WENT THE SUN 12When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.
13AND HE DEFEATED JOSHUA <OBJ.> AMALEK AND <OBJ.> PEOPLE ITS TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD 13So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the sword.
14AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES WRITE THIS REMINDER IN THE BOOK AND PUT [IT] IN [THE] EARS OF JOSHUA FOR CERTAINLY <TO WIPE OUT> I WILL WIPE OUT <OBJ.> [THE] REMEMBRANCE OF AMALEK FROM UNDER THE HEAVENS 14Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as a reminder and recite it to Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
15AND HE BUILT MOSES AN ALTAR AND HE CALLED NAME ITS YAHWEH [IS] STANDARD MY 15And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.*NoteCloseHebrew YHWH Nissi
16AND HE SAID THAT A HAND ON [THE] THRONE OF YAHWEH WAR [WILL BELONG] TO YAHWEH WITH AMALEK FROM GENERATION GENERATION 16“Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
