27AND THEY CAME ELIM TOWARDS AND [WERE] THERE TWO [PLUS] TEN SPRINGS OF WATER AND SEVENTY PALM TREES AND THEY ENCAMPED THERE AT THE WATER 27Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the waters.
1AND THEY SET OUT FROM ELIM AND THEY CAME ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO [THE] WILDERNESS OF SIN WHICH [IS] BETWEEN ELIM AND BETWEEN SINAI ON [THE] FIF- TEEN DAY OF THE MONTH <THE> SECOND OF GOING OUT THEIR FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT Manna and Quail from Heaven 1On the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt, the whole congregation of Israel set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin,*NoteCloseThe geographical name Sin is related to Sinai and should not be mistaken for the English word sin. which is between Elim and Sinai.
2AND THEY GRUMBLED ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL ON MOSES AND ON AARON IN THE WILDERNESS 2And there in the desert the whole congregation of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
3AND THEY SAID TO THEM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHO? WILL HE GIVE DIED WE BY [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT WHEN SAT WE AT [THE] POT OF THE MEAT WHEN ATE WE FOOD TO ABUNDANCE FOR YOU HAVE BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> US INTO THE WILDERNESS <THE> THIS TO PUT TO DEATH <OBJ.> ALL THE ASSEMBLY <THE> THIS BY <THE> HUNGER 3“If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt!” they said. “There we sat by pots of meat and ate our fill of bread, but you have brought us into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death!”
4AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO RAIN DOWN FOR <THE> YOU BREAD FROM THE HEAVENS AND IT WILL GO OUT THE PEOPLE AND THEY WILL GATHER A MATTER OF A DAY IN DAY ITS SO THAT I SHOULD PUT TO [THE] TEST IT ¿ WILL IT WALK IN LAW MY OR? NOT 4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test whether or not they will follow My instructions.
5AND IT WILL BE ON THE DAY <THE> SIXTH AND THEY WILL PREPARE <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH THEY WILL BRING AND IT WILL BE DOUBLE TO [THAT] WHICH THEY WILL GATHER DAY DAY 5Then on the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”
6AND HE SAID MOSES AND AARON TO ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL EVENING AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT YAHWEH HE BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 6So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “This evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
7AND MORNING AND YOU WILL SEE <OBJ.> [THE] GLORY OF YAHWEH BECAUSE HAS HEARD HE <OBJ.> GRUMBLINGS YOUR ON YAHWEH AND [ARE] WE WHAT? THAT YOU WILL CAUSE TO GRUMBLE ON US 7and in the morning you will see the LORD’s glory, because He has heard your grumbling against Him. For who are we, that you should grumble against us?”
8AND HE SAID MOSES WHEN GIVES YAHWEH TO <THE> YOU IN THE EVENING MEAT TO EAT AND BREAD IN THE MORNING TO BE SATISFIED BECAUSE HAS HEARD YAHWEH <OBJ.> GRUMBLINGS YOUR WHICH YOU [ARE] GRUMBLING ON HIM AND [ARE] WE WHAT? NOT [ARE] ON US GRUMBLINGS YOUR FOR ON YAHWEH 8And Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat this evening and bread to fill you in the morning, for He has heard your grumbling against Him. Who are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the LORD.”
9AND HE SAID MOSES TO AARON SAY TO ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL DRAW NEAR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH FOR HE HAS HEARD <OBJ.> GRUMBLINGS YOUR 9Then Moses said to Aaron, “Tell the whole congregation of Israel, ‘Come before the LORD, for He has heard your grumbling.’”
10AND IT WAS WHEN SPOKE AARON TO ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY TURNED TO THE WILDERNESS AND THERE! [THE] GLORY OF YAHWEH IT APPEARED IN THE CLOUD 10And as Aaron was speaking to the whole congregation of Israel, they looked toward the desert, and there in a cloud the glory of the LORD appeared.
12I HAVE HEARD <OBJ.> [THE] GRUMBLINGS OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SPEAK TO THEM <TO> SAYING BETWEEN THE TWO EVENINGS YOU WILL EAT MEAT AND IN THE MORNING YOU WILL BE SATISFIED BREAD AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR 12“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight*NoteCloseHebrew Between the two evenings you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’”
13AND IT WAS IN THE EVENING AND IT CAME UP THE QUAIL AND IT COVERED <OBJ.> THE CAMP AND IN THE MORNING IT WAS [THE] LAYER OF THE DEW AROUND <TO> THE CAMP 13That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.
14AND IT WENT UP [THE] LAYER OF <THE> DEW AND THERE! [WAS] ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE WILDERNESS THIN [STUFF] FLAKE-LIKE THIN [STUFF] LIKE <THE> FROST ON THE GROUND 14When the layer of dew had evaporated, there were thin flakes on the desert floor, as fine as frost on the ground.
15AND THEY SAW [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY SAID EACH TO BROTHER HIS WHAT? [IS] IT FOR NOT THEY KNEW WHAT? [WAS] IT AND HE SAID MOSES TO THEM IT [IS] THE BREAD WHICH HE HAS GIVEN YAHWEH TO <THE> YOU TO FOOD 15When the Israelites saw it, they asked one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. So Moses told them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.
16THIS [IS] THE WORD WHICH HE COMMANDS YAHWEH GATHER SOME OF IT EVERYONE TO [THE] MOUTH OF FOOD HIS AN OMER FOR THE HEAD [THE] NUMBER OF PEOPLE YOUR EVERYONE FOR [THOSE] WHO [ARE] IN TENT HIS YOU WILL TAKE 16This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. You may take an omer*NoteCloseAn omer is approximately 2 dry quarts or 2.2 liters; also in verses 18, 32, 33, and 36. for each person in your tent.’”
17AND THEY DID SO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY GATHERED [IT] THE [ONE WHO] MADE MUCH AND THE [ONE WHO] MADE LITTLE 17So the Israelites did this. Some gathered more, and some less.
18AND THEY MEASURED [IT] BY THE OMER AND NOT HE HAD A SURPLUS THE [ONE WHO] MADE MUCH AND THE [ONE WHO] MADE LITTLE NOT HE HAD A LACK EVERYONE TO [THE] MOUTH OF FOOD HIS THEY HAD GATHERED 18When they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall.*NoteCloseCited in 2 Corinthians 8:15 Each one gathered as much as he needed to eat.
19AND HE SAID MOSES TO THEM EVERYONE MAY NOT HIM LEAVE OVER ANY OF IT UNTIL MORNING 19Then Moses said to them, “No one may keep any of it until morning.”
20AND NOT THEY LISTENED TO MOSES AND THEY LEFT OVER PEOPLE SOME OF IT UNTIL MORNING AND IT BECAME ROTTEN WORMS AND IT STANK AND HE WAS ANGRY TOWARDS THEM MOSES 20But they did not listen to Moses; some people left part of it until morning, and it became infested with maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.
21AND THEY GATHERED <OBJ.> IT IN THE MORNING IN THE MORNING EVERYONE ACCORDING TO [THE] MOUTH OF FOOD HIS AND IT WAS WARM THE SUN AND IT MELTED 21Every morning each one gathered as much as was needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.
22AND IT WAS ON THE DAY <THE> SIXTH THEY GATHERED BREAD OF DOUBLE <THE> TWO <THE> OMER[S] FOR THE ONE AND THEY CAME ALL [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION AND THEY TOLD TO MOSES The Sabbath Observed (Genesis 2:1–3; Hebrews 4:1–11) 22On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much food— two omers per person*NoteClose2 omers is approximately 4 dry quarts or 4.4 liters per person. — and all the leaders of the congregation came and reported this to Moses.
23AND HE SAID TO THEM IT [IS THAT] WHICH HE SAID YAHWEH A SABBATH OBSERVANCE A SABBATH OF HOLINESS TO YAHWEH [IS] TOMORROW <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH YOU WILL BAKE BAKE AND <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH YOU WILL BOIL BOIL AND <OBJ.> ALL THE SURPLUS LEAVE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES FOR KEEPING UNTIL THE MORNING 23He told them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. So bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil. Then set aside whatever remains and keep it until morning.’”
24AND THEY LEFT <OBJ.> IT UNTIL THE MORNING JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED MOSES AND NOT IT STANK AND A MAGGOT NOT IT WAS IN <THE> IT 24So they set it aside until morning as Moses had commanded, and it did not smell or contain any maggots.
25AND HE SAID MOSES EAT IT THIS DAY FOR [IS] A SABBATH THIS DAY TO YAHWEH THIS DAY NOT YOU WILL FIND IT IN THE FIELD 25“Eat it today Moses said, “because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. Today you will not find anything in the field.
26SIX DAYS YOU WILL GATHER IT AND ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH A SABBATH NOT IT WILL BE IN <THE> IT 26For six days you may gather, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, it will not be there
27AND IT WAS ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH THEY WENT OUT SOME OF THE PEOPLE TO GATHER [IT] AND NOT THEY FOUND [IT] 27Yet on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they did not find anything.
28AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES UNTIL WHEN? HAVE YOU REFUSED TO KEEP COMMANDMENTS MY AND LAWS MY 28Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep My commandments and instructions?
29CONSIDER THAT YAHWEH HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> YOU THE SABBATH THERE- -FORE HE [IS] GIVING TO <THE> YOU ON THE DAY <THE> SIXTH BREAD OF TWO DAYS REMAIN EVERYONE IN PLACE HIS MAY NOT HIM GO OUT ANYONE FROM PLACE HIS ON THE DAY <THE> SEVENTH 29Understand that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day He will give you bread for two days. On the seventh day, everyone must stay where he is; no one may leave his place.”
31AND THEY CALLED [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> NAME ITS MANNA AND IT [WAS] LIKE [THE] SEED OF CORIANDER WHITE AND TASTE ITS [WAS] LIKE A WAFER WITH HONEY The Jar of Manna 31Now the house of Israel called the bread manna.*NoteCloseManna sounds like the Hebrew for What is it? (see verse 15). It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.
32AND HE SAID MOSES THIS [IS] THE WORD WHICH HE COMMANDS YAHWEH [THE] FULLNESS OF THE OMER OF IT [WILL BE] FOR KEEPING TO GENERATIONS YOUR SO THAT THEY MAY SEE <OBJ.> THE BREAD WHICH I CAUSED TO EAT <OBJ.> YOU IN THE WILDERNESS WHEN BROUGHT OUT I <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 32Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Keep an omer of manna for the generations to come, so that they may see the bread I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”
33AND HE SAID MOSES TO AARON TAKE A JAR ONE AND PUT THERE <TOWARDS> [THE] FULLNESS OF THE OMER MANNA AND DEPOSIT <OBJ.> IT <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH FOR KEEPING TO GENERATIONS YOUR 33So Moses told Aaron, “Take a jar and fill it with an omer of manna. Then place it before the LORD to be preserved for the generations to come.”
34JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH TO MOSES AND HE DEPOSITED IT AARON <TO> BEFORE THE TESTIMONY FOR KEEPING 34And Aaron placed it in front of the Testimony,*NoteCloseThe Testimony refers to the stone tablets in the ark of the covenant inscribed with the Ten Commandments. to be preserved just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
35AND [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL THEY ATE <OBJ.> THE MANNA FORTY YEAR[S] UNTIL CAME THEY INTO A LAND INHABITED <OBJ.> THE MANNA THEY ATE UNTIL CAME THEY TO [THE] BORDER OF [THE] LAND OF CANAAN 35The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land where they could settle; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.
36AND THE OMER [IS] [THE] TENTH [PART] OF THE EPHAH IT 36(Now an omer is a tenth of an ephah*NoteCloseAn ephah was a dry measure having the capacity of about 20 dry quarts or 22 liters.
