22AND HE COMMANDED PHARAOH TO ALL PEOPLE HIS <TO> SAYING EVERY <THE> SON <THE> BORN THE RIVER TOWARDS YOU WILL THROW HIM AND EVERY <THE> DAUGHTER YOU WILL LET LIVE! 22Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews*NoteCloseSP, LXX, and Targum Yonaton; Hebrew does not include to the Hebrews. you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
1AND HE WENT A MAN FROM [THE] HOUSE OF LEVI AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTER OF LEVI The Birth and Adoption of Moses (Acts 7:20–22; Hebrews 11:23) 1Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2AND SHE CONCEIVED THE WOMAN AND SHE BORE A SON AND SHE SAW <OBJ.> HIM THAT [WAS] GOOD HE AND SHE HID HIM THREE MONTHS 2and she conceived and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months.
3AND NOT SHE WAS ABLE STILL TO HIDE HIM AND SHE TOOK FOR <THE> HIM A BASKET OF PAPYRUS AND SEALED IT SHE WITH <THE> BITUMEN AND WITH <THE> PITCH AND SHE PUT IN <THE> IT <OBJ.> THE CHILD AND SHE PUT [IT] AMONG THE RUSH[ES] AT [THE] BANK OF THE RIVER 3But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket*NoteCloseThe Hebrew can also mean ark; also in verse 5; see Genesis 6:14. and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in the basket and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
4AND SHE STOOD SISTER HIS FROM A DISTANCE TO KNOW WHAT? WILL IT BE DONE TO <THE> HIM 4And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5AND SHE WENT DOWN [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH TO BATHE AT THE RIVER AND FEMALE ATTENDANTS HER [WERE] WALKING ON [THE] SIDE OF THE RIVER AND SHE SAW <OBJ.> THE BASKET IN AMONG THE RUSH[ES] AND SHE SENT <OBJ.> MAID HER AND FETCHED IT SHE 5Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maidservant to retrieve it.
6AND SHE OPENED [IT] AND SHE SAW HIM <OBJ.> THE CHILD AND THERE! A LAD [WAS] CRYING AND SHE HAD COMPASSION ON HIM AND SHE SAID [IS] ONE OF [THE] CHILDREN OF THE HEBREWS THIS 6When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the little boy was crying. So she had compassion on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew children.”
7AND SHE SAID SISTER HIS TO [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH ¿ WILL I GO AND WILL I CALL? FOR <THE> YOU A WOMAN A SUCKLING-NURSE FROM THE HEBREW [WOMEN] SO SHE MAY SUCKLE FOR <THE> YOU <OBJ.> THE CHILD 7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
8AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HER [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH GO AND SHE WENT THE YOUNG WOMAN AND SHE CALLED <OBJ.> [THE] MOTHER OF THE CHILD 8“Go ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. And the girl went and called the boy’s mother.
9AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HER [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH TAKE <OBJ.> THE CHILD <THE> THIS AND SUCKLE HIM FOR <THE> ME AND I I WILL PAY <OBJ.> WAGE[S] YOUR AND SHE TOOK THE WOMAN THE CHILD AND SHE SUCKLED HIM 9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the boy and nursed him.
10AND HE GREW UP THE CHILD AND SHE TOOK HIM TO [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH AND HE BECAME TO HER <INTO> A SON AND SHE CALLED NAME HIS MOSES AND SHE SAID THAT FROM THE WATER I DREW HIM 10When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses*NoteCloseMoses sounds like a Hebrew term that means to lift out. and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
11AND IT WAS IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE AND HE GREW UP MOSES AND HE WENT OUT TO BROTHERS HIS AND HE LOOKED ON FORCED LABOR THEIR AND HE SAW A MAN EGYPTIAN STRIKING A MAN HEBREW ONE OF BROTHERS HIS The Rejection and Flight of Moses (Acts 7:23–29) 11One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people*NoteCloseOr his brothers and observed their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
12AND HE TURNED THUS AND THUS AND HE SAW THAT THERE NOT [WAS] A PERSON AND HE STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> THE EGYPTIAN AND HE HID HIM IN THE SAND 12After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
13AND HE WENT OUT ON THE DAY <THE> SECOND AND THERE! TWO MEN HEBREW [WERE] STRUGGLING TOGETHER AND HE SAID TO THE GUILTY [ONE] <TO> WHY? ARE YOU STRIKING COMPANION YOUR 13The next day Moses went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your companion?”
14AND HE SAID WHO? DID HE APPOINT YOU TO A MAN A CHIEF AND A JUDGE OVER US ¿ TO KILL ME [ARE] YOU SAYING JUST AS YOU KILLED <OBJ.> THE EGYPTIAN AND HE WAS AFRAID MOSES AND HE THOUGHT TRULY IT IS KNOWN THE MATTER 14But the man replied, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?*NoteCloseCited in Acts 7:27 and Acts 7:35 Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?*NoteCloseLXX Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday? Cited in Acts 7:28 ” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “This thing I have done has surely become known.”
15AND HE HEARD PHARAOH <OBJ.> THE MATTER <THE> THIS AND HE SOUGHT TO KILL <OBJ.> MOSES AND HE FLED MOSES FROM BEFORE PHARAOH AND HE DWELT IN [THE] LAND OF MIDIAN AND HE SAT AT THE WELL 15When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down beside a well.
16AND [BELONGED] TO [THE] PRIEST OF MIDIAN SEVEN DAUGHTERS AND THEY CAME AND THEY DREW AND THEY FILLED <OBJ.> THE DRINKING TROUGHS TO WATER [THE] FLOCK OF FATHER THEIR 16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17AND THEY CAME THE SHEPHERDS AND THEY DROVE AWAY THEM AND HE AROSE MOSES AND HE DELIVERED THEM AND HE WATERED <OBJ.> FLOCK THEIR 17And when some shepherds came along and drove them away, Moses rose up to help them and watered their flock.
18AND THEY WENT TO REUEL FATHER THEIR AND HE SAID WHY? DID YOU HURRY TO COME THIS DAY 18When the daughters returned to their father Reuel,*NoteCloseReuel was also called Jethro; see Exodus 3:1. he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
19AND THEY SAID A MAN EGYPTIAN HE RESCUED US FROM [THE] HAND OF THE SHEPHERDS AND ALSO CAREFULLY <TO DRAW> HE DREW FOR <THE> US AND HE WATERED <OBJ.> THE FLOCK 19“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they replied.. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
20AND HE SAID TO DAUGHTERS HIS AND WHERE [IS]? HE <TO> WHY? THIS HAVE YOU LEFT <OBJ.> THE MAN INVITE <TO> <THE> HIM SO HE MAY EAT FOOD 20“So where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat
21AND HE WAS WILLING MOSES TO DWELL WITH THE MAN AND HE GAVE <OBJ.> ZIPPORAH DAUGHTER HIS TO MOSES 21Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.
22AND SHE BORE A SON AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> NAME HIS GERSHOM FOR HE SAID A SOJOURNER I HAVE BECOME IN A LAND FOREIGN 22And she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,*NoteCloseGershom sounds like the Hebrew for foreigner. saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23AND IT WAS IN THE DAYS <THE> MANY <THE> THOSE AND HE DIED [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND THEY GROANED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM THE LABOR AND THEY CRIED OUT AND IT WENT UP CRY FOR HELP THEIR TO <THE> GOD FROM THE LABOR God Hears the Cry of the Israelites 23After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned and cried out under their burden of slavery, and their cry for deliverance from bondage ascended to God.
24AND HE HEARD GOD <OBJ.> GROANING THEIR AND HE REMEMBERED GOD <OBJ.> COVENANT HIS WITH ABRAHAM WITH ISAAC AND WITH JACOB 24So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
25AND HE SAW GOD <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND HE KNEW GOD 25God saw the Israelites and took notice.
