30AND HE SAID MOSES <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH HERE! I [AM] UNCIRCUMCISED OF LIPS AND HOW? WILL HE LISTEN TO ME PHARAOH 30But in the LORD’s presence Moses replied, “Since I am unskilled in speech, why would Pharaoh listen to me?”
1AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES CONSIDER I HAVE APPOINTED YOU A GOD TO PHARAOH AND AARON BROTHER YOUR HE WILL BE PROPHET YOUR God Commands Moses and Aaron 1The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
2YOU YOU WILL SPEAK <OBJ.> ALL THAT I WILL COMMAND YOU AND AARON BROTHER YOUR HE WILL SPEAK TO PHARAOH AND HE WILL LET GO <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM LAND HIS 2You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his land.
3AND I I WILL MAKE STUBBORN <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF PHARAOH AND I WILL MULTIPLY <OBJ.> SIGNS MY AND <OBJ.> WONDERS MY IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 3But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I will multiply My signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,
4AND NOT HE WILL LISTEN TO YOU PHARAOH AND I WILL PUT <OBJ.> HAND MY ON EGYPT AND I WILL BRING OUT <OBJ.> HOSTS MY <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT WITH ACTS OF JUDGMENT GREAT 4Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay My hand on Egypt, and by mighty acts of judgment I will bring the divisions of My people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
5AND THEY WILL KNOW EGYPT THAT I [AM] YAHWEH WHEN STRETCH OUT I <OBJ.> HAND MY ON EGYPT AND I WILL BRING OUT <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM AMONG THEM 5And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.”
6AND HE DID MOSES AND AARON JUST AS HE COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> THEM SO THEY DID 6So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them.
7AND MOSES [WAS] A SON OF EIGHTY YEAR[S] AND AARON [WAS] A SON OF THREE AND EIGHTY YEAR[S] WHEN SPOKE THEY TO PHARAOH 7Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.
8AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES AND TO AARON <TO> SAYING Aaron’s Staff 8The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
9THAT HE WILL SAY TO YOU PHARAOH <TO> SAYING GIVE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES A WONDER AND YOU WILL SAY TO AARON TAKE <OBJ.> STAFF YOUR AND THROW [IT] <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH IT MAY BECOME <INTO> A SERPENT 9“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ you are to say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a serpent.*NoteCloseHebrew tannin; here and in verse 10, in contrast to Moses’ staff, which became a nachash in Exodus 4:3 and was noted again in Exodus 7:15 ”
10AND HE WENT MOSES AND AARON TO PHARAOH AND THEY DID SO JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH AND HE THREW DOWN AARON <OBJ.> STAFF HIS <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH AND <TO> BEFORE SERVANTS HIS AND IT BECAME <INTO> A SERPENT 10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.
11AND HE SUMMONED ALSO PHARAOH <TO> THE WISE MEN AND <TO> THE SORCERERS AND THEY DID ALSO THEY [THE] MAGICIANS OF EGYPT BY ENCHANTMENTS THEIR THUS 11But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same things by their magic arts.
12AND THEY THREW DOWN EACH ONE STAFF HIS AND THEY BECAME <INTO> SERPENTS AND IT SWALLOWED UP [THE] STAFF OF AARON <OBJ.> STAFFS THEIR 12Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up the other staffs.
13AND IT WAS STRONG [THE] HEART OF PHARAOH AND NOT HE LISTENED TO THEM JUST AS HE HAD SAID YAHWEH 13Still, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened,*NoteCloseOr stiffened or strengthened; also in verse 22 and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.
14AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES [IS] HEAVY [THE] HEART OF PHARAOH HE HAS REFUSED TO LET GO THE PEOPLE The First Plague: Blood 14Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;*NoteCloseOr heavy or stubborn he refuses to let the people go.
15GO TO PHARAOH IN THE MORNING THERE! [HE IS] GOING OUT THE WATER TOWARDS AND YOU WILL STAND TO MEET HIM ON [THE] BANK OF THE RIVER AND THE STAFF WHICH IT WAS CHANGED INTO A SNAKE YOU WILL TAKE IN HAND YOUR 15Go to Pharaoh in the morning as you see him walking out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake.
16AND YOU WILL SAY TO HIM YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF THE HEBREWS HE HAS SENT ME TO YOU TO SAY LET GO <OBJ.> PEOPLE MY SO THEY MAY SERVE ME IN THE WILDERNESS AND HERE! NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED UNTIL THUS 16Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let My people go, so that they may worship Me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.
17THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH BY THIS YOU WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH HERE! I [AM] ABOUT TO STRIKE WITH THE STAFF WHICH [IS] IN HAND MY <ON> THE WATER WHICH [IS] IN THE RIVER AND THEY WILL BE CHANGED INTO BLOOD 17This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD. Behold, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will turn to blood.
18AND THE FISH WHICH [IS] IN THE RIVER IT WILL DIE AND IT WILL STINK THE RIVER AND THEY WILL BE WEARY EGYPT TO DRINK WATER FROM THE RIVER 18The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink its water.’”
19AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES SAY TO AARON TAKE STAFF YOUR AND STRETCH OUT HAND YOUR OVER [THE] WATERS OF EGYPT OVER RIVERS THEIR OVER CANALS THEIR AND OVER PONDS THEIR AND OVER EVERY <THE> RESERVOIR OF WATER THEIR SO THEY MAY BECOME BLOOD AND IT WILL BE BLOOD IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND IN THE WOOD<S> AND IN THE STONE<S> 19And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt— over their rivers and canals and ponds and all the reservoirs— that they may become blood.’ There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.”
20AND THEY DID SO MOSES AND AARON JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH AND HE RAISED <IN> THE STAFF AND HE STRUCK <OBJ.> THE WATER WHICH [WAS] IN THE RIVER TO [THE] EYES OF PHARAOH AND TO [THE] EYES OF SERVANTS HIS AND THEY WERE CHANGED ALL THE WATER WHICH [WAS] IN THE RIVER INTO BLOOD 20Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff*NoteCloseHebrew he raised the staff; see verse 19; some translators Moses raised the staff. and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood.
21AND THE FISH WHICH [WAS] IN THE RIVER IT DIED AND IT STANK THE RIVER AND NOT THEY WERE ABLE EGYPT TO DRINK WATER FROM THE RIVER AND IT WAS THE BLOOD IN ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 21The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.
22AND THEY DID THUS [THE] MAGICIANS OF EGYPT BY ENCHANTMENTS THEIR AND IT WAS STRONG [THE] HEART OF PHARAOH AND NOT HE LISTENED TO THEM JUST AS HE HAD SAID YAHWEH 22But the magicians of Egypt did the same things by their magic arts. So Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.
23AND HE TURNED PHARAOH AND HE WENT INTO HOUSE HIS AND NOT HE SET HEART HIS ALSO TO THIS 23Instead, Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and did not take any of this to heart.
24AND THEY DUG ALL EGYPT AROUND THE RIVER WATER TO DRINK FOR NOT THEY WERE ABLE TO DRINK ANY OF [THE] WATER OF THE RIVER 24So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, because they could not drink the water from the river.
25AND IT WAS COMPLETED SEVEN DAYS AFTER STRUCK YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE RIVER 25And seven full days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.
