14AND IT WENT OUT FIRE FROM [THE] BRANCH OF SHOOTS ITS FRUIT ITS IT CONSUMED AND NOT IT WAS IN IT A BRANCH OF STRENGTH A SCEPTER TO RULE [IS] A LAMENTATION IT AND IT HAS BECOME <INTO> A LAMENTATION 14Fire has gone out from its main branch and devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit for a ruler’s scepter.’ This is a lament and shall be used as a lament.”
1AND IT WAS IN THE YEAR <THE> SEVENTH IN THE FIFTH [MONTH] ON THE TEN OF THE MONTH THEY CAME MEN FROM [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL TO CONSULT <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND THEY SAT DOWN <TO> BEFORE ME Israel’s Rebellion in Egypt 1In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and they sat down before me.
3O SON OF HUMANKIND SPEAK WITH [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH ¿ TO CONSULT <OBJ.> ME [ARE] YOU COMING [BY] [THE] LIFE OF ME IF I WILL LET MYSELF BE CONSULTED BY YOU [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH 3“Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: Have you come to inquire of Me? As surely as I live, I will not be consulted by you, declares the Lord GOD.
4¿ WILL YOU JUDGE <OBJ.> THEM ¿ WILL YOU JUDGE O SON OF HUMANKIND <OBJ.> [THE] ABOMINATIONS OF ANCESTORS THEIR MAKE KNOWN TO THEM 4Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? Confront them with the abominations of their fathers
5AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH ON [THE] DAY CHOSE I <IN> ISRAEL AND I LIFTED UP HAND MY TO [THE] OFFSPRING OF [THE] HOUSE OF JACOB AND I MADE MYSELF KNOWN TO THEM IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND I LIFTED UP HAND MY TO THEM <TO> SAYING I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR 5and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore an oath to the descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt. With an uplifted hand I said to them, ‘I am the LORD your God.’
6ON THE DAY <THE> THAT I LIFTED UP HAND MY TO THEM TO BRING OUT THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT TO A LAND WHICH I HAD SELECTED FOR THEM FLOWING OF MILK AND HONEY [IS] BEAUTY IT TO ALL THE LANDS 6On that day I swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands.
7AND I SAID TO THEM EVERYONE [THE] DETESTABLE THINGS OF EYES HIS THROW AWAY AND BY [THE] IDOLS OF EGYPT MAY NOT YOU MAKE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR 7And I said to them: ‘Each of you must throw away the abominations before his eyes, and you must not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.’
8AND THEY REBELLED AGAINST ME AND NOT THEY WERE WILLING TO LISTEN TO ME ANYONE <OBJ.> [THE] DETESTABLE THINGS OF EYES THEIR NOT THEY THREW AWAY AND <OBJ.> [THE] IDOLS OF EGYPT NOT THEY FORSOOK AND I SAID TO POUR OUT RAGE MY ON THEM TO COMPLETE ANGER MY ON THEM IN [THE] MIDST OF [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 8But they rebelled against Me and refused to listen. None of them cast away the abominations before their eyes, and they did not forsake the idols of Egypt. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and vent My anger against them in the land of Egypt.
9AND I ACTED FOR [THE] SAKE OF NAME MY TO NOT TO BE PROFANED TO [THE] EYES OF THE NATIONS WHICH THEY [WERE] IN MIDST OF THEM WHICH I HAD MADE MYSELF KNOWN TO THEM TO EYES THEIR BY BRINGING OUT THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 9But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they were living, in whose sight I had revealed Myself to Israel by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.
10AND I BROUGHT OUT THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND I BROUGHT THEM INTO THE WILDERNESS Israel’s Rebellion in the Wilderness 10So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them into the wilderness.
11AND I GAVE TO THEM <OBJ.> STATUTES MY AND <OBJ.> JUDGMENTS MY I MADE KNOWN TO <OBJ.> THEM WHICH HE WILL DO <OBJ.> THEM THE PERSON AND HE WILL LIVE BY THEM 11And I gave them My statutes and made known to them My ordinances— for the man who does these things will live by them.*NoteCloseSee Leviticus 18:5; also in Ezekiel 20:13 and 21.
12AND ALSO <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY I GAVE TO THEM TO BECOME <INTO> A SIGN BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN THEM TO KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH [WHO] SANCTIFIED THEM 12I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us, so that they would know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.
13AND THEY REBELLED AGAINST ME [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL IN THE WILDERNESS IN STATUTES MY NOT THEY WALKED AND <OBJ.> JUDGMENTS MY THEY REJECTED WHICH HE WILL DO <OBJ.> THEM THE PERSON AND HE WILL LIVE BY THEM AND <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY THEY PROFANED EXCEEDINGLY AND I SAID TO POUR OUT RAGE MY ON THEM IN THE WILDERNESS TO MAKE AN END OF THEM 13Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not follow My statutes and they rejected My ordinances— though the man who does these things will live by them— and they utterly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and put an end to them in the wilderness.
14AND I ACTED FOR [THE] SAKE OF NAME MY TO NOT TO BE PROFANED TO [THE] EYES OF THE NATIONS WHICH I HAD BROUGHT OUT THEM TO EYES THEIR 14But I acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.
15AND ALSO I I LIFTED UP HAND MY TO THEM IN THE WILDERNESS TO NOT TO BRING <OBJ.> THEM INTO THE LAND WHICH I HAD GIVEN FLOWING OF MILK AND HONEY [IS] BEAUTY IT TO ALL THE LANDS 15Moreover, with an uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them— a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands—
16BECAUSE <IN> JUDGMENTS MY THEY HAD REJECTED AND <OBJ.> STATUTES MY NOT THEY HAD WALKED IN THEM AND <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY THEY HAD PROFANED FOR AFTER IDOLS THEIR HEART THEIR [WAS] WALKING 16because they kept rejecting My ordinances, refusing to walk in My statutes, and profaning My Sabbaths; for their hearts continually went after their idols.
17AND IT LOOKED WITH COMPASSION EYE MY ON THEM FROM DESTROYING THEM AND NOT I MADE <OBJ.> THEM COMPLETE DESTRUCTION IN THE WILDERNESS 17Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy them or bring them to an end in the wilderness.
18AND I SAID TO CHILDREN THEIR IN THE WILDERNESS IN [THE] STATUTES OF ANCESTORS YOUR MAY NOT YOU WALK AND <OBJ.> JUDGMENTS THEIR MAY NOT YOU KEEP AND BY IDOLS THEIR MAY NOT YOU MAKE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN 18In the wilderness I said to their children: ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols.
19I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR IN STATUTES MY WALK AND <OBJ.> JUDGMENTS MY KEEP AND DO <OBJ.> THEM 19I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them.
20AND <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY KEEP HOLY AND THEY WILL BECOME <INTO> A SIGN BETWEEN ME AND BETWEEN YOU TO KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR 20Keep My Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us, so that you may know that I am the LORD your God.’
21AND THEY REBELLED AGAINST ME THE CHILDREN IN STATUTES MY NOT THEY WALKED AND <OBJ.> JUDGMENTS MY NOT THEY KEPT TO OBSERVE <OBJ.> THEM WHICH HE WILL DO <OBJ.> THEM THE PERSON AND HE WILL LIVE BY THEM <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY THEY PROFANED AND I SAID TO POUR OUT RAGE MY ON THEM TO COMPLETE ANGER MY ON THEM IN THE WILDERNESS 21But the children rebelled against Me. They did not walk in My statutes or carefully observe My ordinances though the man who does these things will live by them— and they profaned My Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and vent My anger against them in the wilderness.
22AND I TURNED BACK <OBJ.> HAND MY AND I ACTED FOR [THE] SAKE OF NAME MY TO NOT TO BE PROFANED TO [THE] EYES OF THE NATIONS WHICH I BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> THEM TO EYES THEIR 22But I withheld My hand and acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.
23ALSO I I LIFTED UP <OBJ.> HAND MY TO THEM IN THE WILDERNESS TO SCATTER <OBJ.> THEM AMONG THE NATIONS AND TO DISPERSE <OBJ.> THEM AMONG THE LANDS 23However, with an uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them throughout the lands.
24BECAUSE JUDGMENTS MY NOT THEY HAD DONE AND STATUTES MY THEY HAD REJECTED AND <OBJ.> SABBATHS MY THEY HAD PROFANED AND AFTER [THE] IDOLS OF PARENTS THEIR THEY HAD BEEN EYES THEIR 24For they did not practice My ordinances, but they rejected My statutes and profaned My Sabbaths, fixing their eyes on the idols of their fathers.
25AND ALSO I I GAVE TO <THE> THEM STATUTES NOT GOOD AND JUDGMENTS [WHICH] NOT THEY WILL LIVE BY THEM 25I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live.
26AND I MADE UNCLEAN <OBJ.> THEM BY GIFTS THEIR WHEN MADE PASS THROUGH EVERY FIRSTBORN OF A WOMB SO THAT I MAY MAKE APPALLED THEM SO THAT THIS THEY MAY KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH 26And I pronounced them unclean through their gifts— the sacrifice of every firstborn in the fire so that I might devastate them, in order that they would know that I am the LORD.
27<TO> THEREFORE SPEAK TO [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL O SON OF HUMANKIND AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH AGAIN THIS THEY BLASPHEMED <OBJ.> ME ANCESTORS YOUR WHEN ACTED UNFAITHFULLY THEY AGAINST ME UNFAITHFULNESS Israel’s Rebellion in the Land 27Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: In this way also your fathers blasphemed Me by their unfaithfulness against Me.
28AND I BROUGHT THEM INTO THE LAND WHICH I HAD LIFTED UP <OBJ.> HAND MY TO GIVE <OBJ.> IT TO <THE> THEM AND THEY SAW EVERY HILL HIGH AND EVERY TREE LEAFY AND THEY SACRIFICED THERE <OBJ.> SACRIFICES THEIR AND THEY PRESENTED THERE [THE] PROVOCATION OF OFFERING THEIR AND THEY MADE THERE [THE] ODOR OF SOOTHING THEIR AND THEY POURED OUT THERE <OBJ.> DRINK OFFERINGS THEIR 28When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them and they saw any high hill or leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, presented offerings that provoked Me, sent up their fragrant incense, and poured out their drink offerings.
29AND I SAID TO THEM WHAT? [IS] THE HIGH PLACE WHERE YOU [ARE] THE [ONES WHO] GO THERE AND IT HAS BEEN CALLED NAME ITS BAMAH UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 29So I asked them: ‘What is this high place to which you go?’ (And to this day it is called Bamah.*NoteCloseBamah means high place.)
30<TO> THEREFORE SAY TO [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH ¿ IN [THE] WAY? OF ANCESTORS YOUR [ARE] YOU MAKING YOURSELVES UNCLEAN AND AFTER DETESTABLE THINGS THEIR [ARE] YOU? ACTING AS PROSTITUTES 30Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: Will you defile yourselves the way your fathers did, prostituting yourselves with their abominations?
31AND WHEN LIFT UP GIFTS YOUR WHEN MAKE PASS CHILDREN YOUR IN THE FIRE YOU [ARE] MAKING YOURSELVES UNCLEAN TO ALL IDOLS YOUR UNTIL THIS DAY AND I WILL I LET MYSELF BE CONSULTED? BY YOU O HOUSE OF ISRAEL [BY] [THE] LIFE OF ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH IF I WILL LET MYSELF BE CONSULTED BY YOU 31When you offer your gifts, sacrificing your sons in the fire,*NoteCloseLiterally making your sons pass through the fire you continue to defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. So should I be consulted by you, O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will not be consulted by you!
32AND THE [THING WHICH] COMES UP ON SPIRIT YOUR CERTAINLY <HAPPEN> NOT IT WILL HAPPEN [THAT] WHICH YOU [ARE] SAYING WE WILL BE LIKE THE NATIONS LIKE [THE] CLANS OF THE LANDS TO SERVE WOOD AND STONE 32When you say, ‘Let us be like the nations, like the peoples of the lands, serving wood and stone,’ what you have in mind will never come to pass.
33[BY] [THE] LIFE OF ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH IF NOT BY A HAND STRONG AND BY AN ARM OUTSTRETCHED AND WITH RAGE POURED OUT I WILL REIGN OVER YOU Judgment and Restoration 33As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, with a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and outpoured wrath I will rule over you.
34AND I WILL BRING OUT <OBJ.> YOU FROM THE PEOPLES AND I WILL GATHER <OBJ.> YOU FROM THE LANDS WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN SCATTERED AMONG THEM BY A HAND STRONG AND BY AN ARM OUTSTRETCHED AND WITH RAGE POURED OUT 34With a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and outpoured wrath I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you*NoteCloseLXX receive you; see also 2 Corinthians 6:17. from the lands to which you have been scattered.
35AND I WILL BRING <OBJ.> YOU INTO [THE] WILDERNESS OF THE PEOPLES AND I WILL ENTER INTO JUDGMENT WITH YOU THERE FACE TO FACE 35And I will bring you into the wilderness of the nations, where I will enter into judgment with you face to face.
36JUST AS I ENTERED INTO JUDGMENT WITH ANCESTORS YOUR IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF [THE] LAND OF EGYPT SO I WILL ENTER INTO JUDGMENT WITH YOU [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH 36Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt,*NoteCloseOr in the wilderness after bringing them out of Egypt so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord GOD.
37AND I WILL MAKE PASS <OBJ.> YOU UNDER THE ROD AND I WILL BRING <OBJ.> YOU IN [THE] BOND OF THE COVENANT 37I will make you pass under the rod and will bring you into the bond of the covenant.
38AND I WILL PURGE FROM YOU THOSE [WHO] REBEL AND THOSE [WHO] TRANSGRESS AGAINST ME FROM [THE] LAND OF SOJOURNINGS THEIR I WILL BRING OUT <OBJ.> THEM AND INTO [THE] LAND OF ISRAEL NOT HE WILL GO AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH 38And I will purge you of those who rebel and transgress against Me. I will bring them out of the land in which they dwell, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
39AND YOU O HOUSE OF ISRAEL THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH EVERYONE IDOLS HIS GO SERVE AND AFTER IF NOT YOU [WILL BE] LISTENING TO ME AND <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF HOLINESS MY NOT YOU WILL PROFANE AGAIN BY GIFTS YOUR AND BY IDOLS YOUR 39And as for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you. But afterward, you will surely listen to Me, and you will no longer defile My holy name with your gifts and idols.
40FOR ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF HOLINESS MY ON [THE] MOUNTAIN OF [THE] HEIGHT OF ISRAEL [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH THERE THEY WILL SERVE ME ALL [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL ALL OF IT IN THE LAND THERE I WILL ACCEPT THEM AND THERE I WILL SEEK <OBJ.> CONTRIBUTIONS YOUR AND <OBJ.> [THE] CHOICEST OF GIFTS YOUR WITH ALL HOLY THINGS YOUR 40For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices.
41<IN> AN ODOR OF SOOTHING I WILL ACCEPT <OBJ.> YOU WHEN BRING OUT I <OBJ.> YOU FROM THE PEOPLES AND I WILL GATHER <OBJ.> YOU FROM THE LANDS WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN SCATTERED AMONG THEM AND I WILL SHOW MYSELF HOLY AMONG YOU TO [THE] EYES OF THE NATIONS 41When I bring you from the peoples and gather you from the lands to which you have been scattered I will accept you as a pleasing aroma. And I will show My holiness through you in the sight of the nations.
42AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH WHEN BRING I <OBJ.> YOU INTO [THE] LAND OF ISRAEL INTO THE LAND WHICH I LIFTED UP <OBJ.> HAND MY TO GIVE <OBJ.> IT TO ANCESTORS YOUR 42Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land that I swore to give your fathers.
43AND YOU WILL REMEMBER THERE <OBJ.> WAYS YOUR AND <OBJ.> ALL PRACTICES YOUR WHICH YOU HAVE MADE YOURSELVES UNCLEAN BY THEM AND YOU WILL LOATHE <IN> FACES YOUR FOR ALL WICKED DEEDS YOUR WHICH YOU HAVE DONE 43There you will remember your ways and all the deeds with which you have defiled yourselves and you will loathe yourselves for all the evils you have done.
44AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH WHEN DO I WITH YOU FOR [THE] SAKE OF NAME MY NOT ACCORDING TO WAYS YOUR <THE> WICKED AND ACCORDING TO PRACTICES YOUR <THE> CORRUPT O HOUSE OF ISRAEL [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH 44Then you will know, O house of Israel, that I am the LORD, when I have dealt with you for the sake of My name and not according to your wicked ways and corrupt acts, declares the Lord GOD.”
45AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO ME <TO> SAYING A Prophecy against the South 45Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
46O SON OF HUMANKIND SET FACE YOUR [THE] DIRECTION SOUTH -WARD AND PROPHESY AGAINST [THE] SOUTH AND PROPHESY AGAINST [THE] FOREST OF THE FIELD [THE] SOUTH 46“Son of man, set your face toward the south,*NoteCloseHebrew toward Teman preach against it, and prophesy against the forest of the Negev.
47AND YOU WILL SAY TO [THE] FOREST OF THE SOUTH HEAR [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO KINDLE IN YOU A FIRE AND IT WILL CONSUME IN YOU EVERY TREE MOIST AND EVERY TREE DRY NOT IT WILL BE EXTINGUISHED [THE] FLAME OF FLAME AND THEY WILL BE SCORCHED BY IT ALL FACES FROM [THE] SOUTH [THE] NORTH TOWARDS 47Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to ignite in you a fire, and it will devour all your trees, both green and dry. The blazing flame will not be quenched, and by it every face from south to north will be scorched.
48AND THEY WILL SEE ALL FLESH THAT I YAHWEH I HAVE KINDLED IT NOT IT WILL BE EXTINGUISHED 48Then all people will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it; it will not be quenched.”
49AND I SAID ALAS! O LORD YAHWEH THEY [ARE] SAYING OF ME ¿ NOT MAKING A PARABLE PARABLES [IS] HE 49Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD, they are saying of me, ‘Is he not just telling parables?’”
