26AND I WILL SCATTER <OBJ.> EGYPT AMONG THE NATIONS AND I WILL DISPERSE <OBJ.> THEM AMONG THE LANDS AND THEY WILL KNOW THAT I [AM] YAHWEH 26I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
1AND IT WAS IN ONE [PLUS] TEN YEAR IN THE THIRD [MONTH] ON [DAY] ONE OF THE MONTH IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO ME <TO> SAYING 1In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2O SON OF HUMANKIND SAY TO PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND TO MULTITUDE HIS <TO> WHOM? ARE YOU LIKE IN GREATNESS YOUR 2“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: ‘Who can be compared to your greatness?
3THERE! ASSYRIA [WAS] A CEDAR IN <THE> LEBANON BEAUTIFUL OF BRANCH[ES] AND FOREST GIVING SHADE AND TALL OF HEIGHT AND BETWEEN BRANCHES IT WAS TREETOP ITS 3Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches that shaded the forest. It towered on high; its top was among the clouds.
4WATERS THEY MADE GROW IT [THE] DEEP IT RAISED UP IT <OBJ.> RIVERS ITS GOING AROUND PLANTING PLACE ITS AND <OBJ.> CHANNELS ITS IT SENT OUT TO ALL [THE] TREES OF THE FIELD 4The waters made it grow; the deep springs made it tall, directing their streams all around its base and sending their channels to all the trees of the field.
5THERE- -FORE IT WAS TALL HEIGHT ITS MORE THAN ALL [THE] TREES OF THE FIELD AND THEY BECAME GREAT BOUGHS ITS AND THEY BECAME LONG BRANCHES ITS FROM WATERS MANY WHEN SENT OUT IT 5Therefore it towered higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long as it spread them out because of the abundant waters.
6IN BOUGHS ITS THEY MADE NESTS EVERY <THE> BIRD OF THE HEAVENS AND UNDER BRANCHES ITS THEY GAVE BIRTH EVERY <THE> ANIMAL OF THE FIELD AND IN SHADE ITS THEY DWELT ALL NATIONS GREAT 6All the birds of the air nested in its branches, and all the beasts of the field gave birth beneath its boughs; all the great nations lived in its shade.
7AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL IN GREATNESS ITS IN [THE] LENGTH OF BRANCHES ITS FOR IT WAS ROOT ITS TO WATERS MANY 7It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its limbs, for its roots extended to abundant waters.
8CEDARS NOT THEY ECLIPSED IT IN [THE] GARDEN OF GOD FIR TREES NOT THEY WERE LIKE <TO> BOUGHS ITS AND PLANE TREES NOT THEY WERE LIKE BRANCHES ITS EVERY TREE IN [THE] GARDEN OF GOD NOT IT WAS LIKE <TO> IT IN BEAUTY ITS 8The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the cypresses*NoteCloseOr pines or junipers or firs could not compare with its branches, nor the plane trees*NoteClosePossibly chestnut or juniper match its boughs. No tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty.
9BEAUTIFUL I MADE IT IN [THE] ABUNDANCE OF BRANCHES ITS AND THEY ENVIED IT ALL [THE] TREES OF EDEN WHICH [WERE] IN [THE] GARDEN OF <THE> GOD 9I made it beautiful with its many branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God.’
10<TO> THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH BECAUSE THAT YOU WERE TALL IN HEIGHT AND IT SET TREETOP ITS TO BETWEEN BRANCHES AND IT WAS LIFTED UP HEART ITS IN HEIGHT ITS 10Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Since it became great*NoteCloseHebrew you became great in height and set its top among the clouds,*NoteCloseOr through the thick boughs and it grew proud on account of its height,
11AND I WILL GIVE IT IN [THE] HAND OF A LEADER OF NATIONS CERTAINLY <TO DO> HE WILL DO TO IT ACCORDING TO WICKEDNESS ITS I DROVE OUT IT 11I delivered it into the hand of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with it according to its wickedness. I have banished it.
12AND THEY CUT DOWN IT STRANGERS RUTHLESS [ONES] OF NATIONS AND THEY ABANDONED IT TO THE MOUNTAINS AND IN ALL [THE] VALLEYS THEY FELL BRANCHES ITS AND THEY WERE BROKEN BRANCHES ITS IN ALL [THE] RAVINES OF THE LAND AND THEY WENT DOWN FROM SHADE ITS ALL [THE] PEOPLES OF THE EARTH AND THEY ABANDONED IT 12Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. And all the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it.
13ON FALLEN TRUNK ITS THEY DWELT EVERY <THE> BIRD OF THE HEAVENS AND TO BRANCHES ITS THEY CAME EVERY <THE> ANIMAL OF THE FIELD 13All the birds of the air nested on its fallen trunk, and all the beasts of the field lived among its boughs.
14SO THAT THAT NOT THEY MAY BE LIFTED UP IN HEIGHT THEIR ANY TREES OF WATER AND NOT THEY MAY SET <OBJ.> TREETOP THEIR TO BETWEEN BRANCHES AND NOT THEY MAY STAND LEADERS THEIR BY HEIGHT THEIR ANY DRINKERS OF WATER FOR ALL OF THEM THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO <THE> DEATH TO [THE] EARTH LOWEST IN AMONG [THE] CHILDREN OF HUMANKIND TO [THOSE WHO] GO DOWN OF [THE] PIT 14This happened so that no other trees by the waters would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’
15THUS HE SAYS [THE] LORD YAHWEH ON [THE] DAY WENT DOWN IT SHEOL TOWARDS I CAUSED MOURNING I COVERED OVER IT <OBJ.> [THE] DEEP AND I WITHHELD RIVERS ITS AND THEY WERE RESTRAINED WATERS MANY AND I MADE MOURN ON IT LEBANON AND ALL [THE] TREES OF THE FIELD ON IT [WERE] WILTED 15This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
16FROM [THE] SOUND OF DOWNFALL ITS I CAUSED TO TREMBLE NATIONS WHEN BROUGHT DOWN I <OBJ.> IT SHEOL TOWARDS WITH [THOSE WHO] GO DOWN OF [THE] PIT AND THEY WERE COMFORTED IN [THE] EARTH LOWEST ALL [THE] TREES OF EDEN [THE] CHOICEST AND [THE] GOOD OF LEBANON ALL DRINKERS OF WATER 16I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below.
17ALSO THEY WITH IT THEY WENT DOWN SHEOL TOWARDS TO [THOSE] SLAIN OF A SWORD AND ARM ITS [WHICH] THEY DWELT IN SHADE ITS IN AMONG [THE] NATIONS 17They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies they had lived in its shade among the nations.
18<TO> WHOM? ARE YOU LIKE THUS IN SPLENDOR AND IN GREATNESS AMONG [THE] TREES OF EDEN AND YOU WILL BE BROUGHT DOWN WITH [THE] TREES OF EDEN TO [THE] EARTH LOWEST IN AMONG UNCIRCUMCISED [MEN] YOU WILL LIE WITH [THOSE] SLAIN OF A SWORD THAT [IS] PHARAOH AND ALL MULTITUDE HIS [THE] UTTERANCE OF [THE] LORD YAHWEH 18Who then is like you in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? You also will be brought down to the depths of the earth to be with the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”
