2THEY MADE WAR WITH BERA [THE] KING OF SODOM AND WITH BIRSHA [THE] KING OF GOMORRAH SHINAB [THE] KING OF ADMAH AND SHEMEBER [THE] KING OF ZEBOIIM AND [THE] KING OF BELA THAT [IS] ZOAR 2went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
3ALL THESE THEY JOINED TOGETHER TO [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> SIDDIM THAT [IS] [THE] SEA OF <THE> SALT 3The latter five came as allies to the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea*NoteCloseThat is, the Dead Sea).
4TWO [PLUS] TEN YEAR[S] THEY HAD SERVED <OBJ.> KEDORLAOMER AND THIR- TEEN YEAR THEY REBELLED 4For twelve years they had been subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5AND IN FOUR- TEEN YEAR HE CAME KEDORLAOMER AND THE KINGS WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND THEY DEFEATED <OBJ.> [THE] REPHAITES IN ASHTEROTH KARNAIM AND <OBJ.> THE ZUZITES IN HAM AND <OBJ.> THE EMITES IN SHAVEH KIRIATHAIM 5In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim,
6AND <OBJ.> THE HORITE[S] IN HILL COUNTRY OF THEIR SEIR TO EL PARAN WHICH [IS] AT THE WILDERNESS 6and the Horites in the area of Mount Seir, as far as El-paran, which is near the desert.
7AND THEY TURNED BACK AND THEY CAME TO EN MISHPAT THAT [IS] KADESH AND THEY DEFEATED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] REGION OF THE AMALEKITE[S] AND ALSO <OBJ.> THE AMORITE[S] WHO WAS DWELLING IN HAZEZON TAMAR 7Then they turned back to invade En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
8AND HE WENT OUT [THE] KING OF SODOM AND [THE] KING OF GOMORRAH AND [THE] KING OF ADMAH AND [THE] KING OF ZEBOIIM AND [THE] KING OF BELA THAT [IS] ZOAR AND THEY DEPLOYED WITH THEM BATTLE IN [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> SIDDIM 8Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and arrayed themselves for battle in the Valley of Siddim*NoteCloseThat is, the Valley of the Dead Sea
9WITH KEDORLAOMER [THE] KING OF ELAM AND TIDAL [THE] KING OF GOYIM AND AMRAPHEL [THE] KING OF SHINAR AND ARIOCH [THE] KING OF ELLASAR FOUR KINGS WITH THE FIVE 9against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar— four kings against five.
10AND [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> SIDDIM [WAS] PITS PITS OF BITUMEN AND THEY FLED [THE] KING OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH AND THEY FELL THERE TOWARDS AND THOSE [WHO] SURVIVED [THE] HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS THEY FLED Abram Rescues Lot 10Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits, but the survivors fled to the hill country.
11AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> ALL [THE] POSSESSION[S] OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH AND <OBJ.> ALL FOOD THEIR AND THEY WENT 11The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food, and they went on their way.
12AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> LOT AND <OBJ.> POSSESSION[S] HIS [THE] SON OF [THE] BROTHER OF ABRAM AND THEY WENT AND HE [WAS] DWELLING IN SODOM 12They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since Lot was living in Sodom.
13AND HE CAME THE FUGITIVE AND HE TOLD TO ABRAM THE HEBREW AND HE [WAS] DWELLING AT [THE] GREAT TREES OF MAMRE THE AMORITE [THE] BROTHER OF ESHCOL AND [THE] BROTHER OF ANER AND THEY [WERE] [THE] PARTNERS OF [THE] COVENANT OF ABRAM 13Then an escapee came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the Oaks*NoteCloseOr Terebinths or Great Trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were bound by treaty*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew berit are translated in most passages as covenant. to Abram.
14AND HE HEARD ABRAM THAT HE HAD BEEN TAKEN CAPTIVE RELATIVE HIS AND HE DREW OUT <OBJ.> TRAINED MEN HIS THOSE BORN OF HOUSEHOLD HIS EIGHT- TEEN AND THREE HUNDRED<S> AND HE PURSUED TO DAN 14And when Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men born in his household, and they set out in pursuit as far as Dan.
15AND DIVIDED HIMSELF ON THEM NIGHT HE AND SERVANTS HIS AND HE ATTACKED THEM AND HE PURSUED THEM TO HOBAH WHICH [IS] FROM [THE] NORTH OF DAMASCUS 15During the night, Abram divided his forces and routed Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
16AND HE BROUGHT BACK <OBJ.> ALL THE POSSESSION[S] AND ALSO <OBJ.> LOT RELATIVE HIS AND POSSESSION[S] HIS HE BROUGHT BACK AND ALSO <OBJ.> THE WOMEN AND <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE 16He retrieved all the goods, as well as his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the rest of the people.
17AND HE WENT OUT [THE] KING OF SODOM TO MEET HIM AFTER RETURNED HE FROM DEFEATING <OBJ.> KEDOR-LAOMER AND <OBJ.> THE KINGS WHO [WERE] WITH HIM TO [THE] VALLEY OF SHAVEH THAT [IS] [THE] VALLEY OF THE KING Melchizedek Blesses Abram (Psalm 110:1–7; Hebrews 7:1–10) 17After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
18AND MELCHI- -ZEDEK [THE] KING OF SALEM HE BROUGHT OUT BREAD AND WINE AND HE [WAS] A PRIEST OF GOD MOST HIGH 18Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine— since he was priest of God Most High*NoteCloseHebrew El-Elyon; also in verses 19, 20, and 22; cited in Hebrews 7:1 —
19AND HE BLESSED HIM AND HE SAID [BE] BLESSED ABRAM BY GOD MOST HIGH [THE] CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH 19and he blessed Abram and said: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
20AND [BE] BLESSED GOD MOST HIGH WHO HE HAS DELIVERED OPPONENTS YOUR IN HAND YOUR AND HE GAVE TO <THE> HIM A TENTH FROM EVERYTHING 20and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
21AND HE SAID [THE] KING OF SODOM TO ABRAM GIVE TO <THE> ME THE PERSON[S] AND THE POSSESSION[S] TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELF 21The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the goods for yourself.”
22AND HE SAID ABRAM TO [THE] KING OF SODOM I RAISE HAND MY TO YAHWEH GOD MOST HIGH [THE] CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH 22But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
23IF FROM A THREAD AND UNTO A THONG OF A SANDAL AND IF I WILL TAKE ANY OF ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU AND NOT YOU WILL SAY I I MADE RICH <OBJ.> ABRAM 23that I will not accept even a thread, or a strap of a sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’
24APART FROM ME ONLY [THAT] WHICH THEY HAVE EATEN THE YOUNG MEN AND [THE] SHARE OF THE MEN WHO <THEY> WENT WITH ME ANER ESHCOL AND MAMRE THEY LET THEM TAKE SHARE THEIR 24I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me— Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. They may take their portion.”
