1 AND ABRAHAM HE WAS OLD HE HAD COME IN <THE> DAYS AND YAHWEH HE HAD BLESSED <OBJ.> ABRAHAM IN <THE> EVERYTHING
A Wife for Isaac
1 By now Abraham was old and well along in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
2 AND HE SAID ABRAHAM TO SERVANT HIS <THE> OLD OF HOUSEHOLD HIS WHO WAS RULING OVER ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM PUT PLEASE HAND YOUR UNDER THIGH MY
2 So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned “Place your hand under my thigh,
3 SO I MAY MAKE SWEAR YOU BY YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF THE HEAVENS AND [THE] GOD OF THE EARTH THAT NOT YOU WILL TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY FROM [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE CANAANITE[S] WHOM I [AM] DWELLING IN MIDST ITS
3 and I will have you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
4 FOR TO LAND MY AND TO KINDRED MY YOU WILL GO AND YOU WILL TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY FOR ISAAC
4 but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.”
5 AND HE SAID TO HIM THE SERVANT PERHAPS NOT SHE WILL BE WILLING THE WOMAN TO GO AFTER ME TO THE LAND <THE> THIS ¿ REALLY <TO TAKE BACK> WILL I TAKE BACK <OBJ.> SON YOUR TO THE LAND WHERE YOU CAME OUT FROM THERE
5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
6 AND HE SAID TO HIM ABRAHAM TAKE HEED TO <THE> YOURSELF LEST YOU SHOULD TAKE BACK <OBJ.> SON MY THERE TOWARDS
6 Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
7 YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF THE HEAVENS WHO HE TOOK ME FROM [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER MY AND FROM [THE] LAND OF KINDRED MY AND WHO HE SPOKE TO <THE> ME AND WHO HE SWORE AN OATH TO <THE> ME <TO> SAYING TO OFFSPRING YOUR I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> THIS HE HE WILL SEND ANGEL HIS <TO> BEFORE YOU AND YOU WILL TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY FROM THERE
7 The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’— He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
8 AND IF NOT SHE WILL BE WILLING THE WOMAN TO GO AFTER YOU AND YOU WILL BE FREE FROM OATH MY THIS ONLY <OBJ.> SON MY NOT YOU MUST TAKE BACK THERE TOWARDS
8 And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
9 AND HE PUT THE SERVANT <OBJ.> HAND HIS UNDER [THE] THIGH OF ABRAHAM MASTER<S> HIS AND HE SWORE AN OATH TO <THE> HIM ON THE MATTER <THE> THIS
9 So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10 AND HE TOOK THE SERVANT TEN CAMELS FROM [THE] CAMELS OF MASTER<S> HIS AND HE WENT AND EVERY <THE> GOOD THING OF MASTER<S> HIS [WAS] IN HAND HIS AND HE AROSE AND HE WENT TO ARAM NAHARAIM TO [THE] CITY OF NAHOR
10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand. And he set out for Nahor’s hometown in Aram-naharaim.
11 AND HE MADE KNEEL THE CAMELS FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF THE CITY TO [THE] WELL OF THE WATER TO [THE] TIME OF EVENING TO [THE] TIME OF [THE] GOING OUT OF THE [WOMEN WHO] DRAW WATER
11 As evening approached, he made the camels kneel down near the well outside the town at the time when the women went out to draw water.
12 AND HE SAID O YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF MASTER MY ABRAHAM MAKE HAPPEN PLEASE <TO> BEFORE ME THIS DAY AND DO COVENANT LOYALTY WITH MASTER MY ABRAHAM
12 “O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
13 HERE! I [AM] STANDING AT [THE] SPRING OF THE WATER AND [THE] DAUGHTERS OF [THE] PEOPLE OF THE CITY [ARE] COMING OUT TO DRAW WATER
13 Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
14 AND IT WILL BE THE YOUNG WOMAN WHOM I WILL SAY TO HER BEND DOWN PLEASE JAR YOUR SO I MAY DRINK AND SHE WILL SAY DRINK AND ALSO CAMELS YOUR I WILL GIVE A DRINK TO <OBJ.> HER YOU HAVE APPOINTED FOR SERVANT YOUR FOR ISAAC AND BY <THE> IT I WILL KNOW THAT YOU HAVE DONE COVENANT LOYALTY WITH MASTER MY
14 Now may it happen that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’— let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
15 AND IT WAS HE NOT YET HE HAD FINISHED TO SPEAK AND THERE! REBEKAH [WAS] COMING OUT WHO SHE HAD BEEN BORN TO BETHUEL [THE] SON OF MILCAH [THE] WIFE OF NAHOR [THE] BROTHER OF ABRAHAM AND JAR HER [WAS] ON SHOULDER HER
Rebekah Is Chosen
15 Before the servant had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.
16 AND THE YOUNG WOMAN [WAS] GOOD OF APPEARANCE EXCEEDINGLY A VIRGIN AND A MAN NOT HE HAD KNOWN HER AND SHE WENT DOWN THE SPRING TOWARDS AND SHE FILLED JAR HER AND SHE CAME UP
16 Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up again.
17 AND HE RAN THE SERVANT TO MEET HER AND HE SAID GIVE TO DRINK ME PLEASE A LITTLE OF WATER FROM JAR YOUR
17 So the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me have a little water from your jar.”
18 AND SHE SAID DRINK O LORD MY AND SHE HURRIED AND SHE PUT DOWN JAR HER ON HAND HER AND SHE GAVE A DRINK HIM
18 “Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19 AND SHE FINISHED TO GIVE A DRINK HIM AND SHE SAID ALSO FOR CAMELS YOUR I WILL DRAW WATER UNTIL <IF> THEY HAVE FINISHED TO DRINK
19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
20 AND SHE HURRIED AND SHE EMPTIED JAR HER INTO THE WATERING CHANNEL AND SHE RAN AGAIN TO THE WELL TO DRAW WATER AND SHE DREW WATER FOR ALL CAMELS HIS
20 And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran back to the well to draw water, until she had drawn water for all his camels.
21 AND THE MAN [WAS] GAZING TO <THE> HER BEING SILENT TO KNOW ¿ HAD HE MADE SUCCESSFUL YAHWEH JOURNEY HIS OR? NOT
21 Meanwhile, the man watched her silently to see whether or not the LORD had made his journey a success.
22 AND IT WAS JUST AS THEY HAD FINISHED THE CAMELS TO DRINK AND HE TOOK THE MAN A RING OF GOLD [WAS] A BEKA WEIGHT ITS AND TWO BRACELETS ON HANDS HER [WAS] TEN OF GOLD WEIGHT THEIR
22 And after the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring weighing a beka, and two gold bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels.
23 AND HE SAID DAUGHTER OF WHOM? [ARE] YOU TELL PLEASE TO <THE> ME ¿ [IS] THERE [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER YOUR ROOM FOR <THE> US TO STAY [THE] NIGHT
23 “Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
24 AND SHE SAID TO HIM [AM] [THE] DAUGHTER OF BETHUEL I [THE] SON OF MILCAH WHOM SHE BORE TO NAHOR
24 She replied, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor.”
25 AND SHE SAID TO HIM BOTH STRAW AS WELL AS FODDER MUCH WHICH [IS] WITH US ALSO ROOM TO STAY [THE] NIGHT
25 Then she added, “We have plenty of straw and feed, as well as a place for you to spend the night.”
26 AND HE BOWED LOW THE MAN AND HE BOWED DOWN TO YAHWEH
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,
27 AND HE SAID [BE] BLESSED YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF MASTER MY ABRAHAM WHO NOT HE HAS LEFT COVENANT LOYALTY HIS AND FAITHFULNESS HIS FROM WITH MASTER MY I ON THE JOURNEY HE HAS LED ME YAHWEH [THE] HOUSE OF [THE] RELATIVES OF MASTER MY
27 saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld His kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
28 AND SHE RAN THE YOUNG WOMAN AND SHE TOLD TO [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF MOTHER HER ACCORDING TO THE THINGS <THE> THESE
28 The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things.
29 AND [BELONGED] TO REBEKAH A BROTHER AND NAME HIS [WAS] LABAN AND HE RAN LABAN TO THE MAN THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS TO THE SPRING
29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he rushed out to the man at the spring.
30 AND IT WAS WHEN SAW <OBJ.> THE RING AND <OBJ.> THE BRACELETS ON [THE] HANDS OF SISTER HIS AND JUST AS HEARD HE <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF REBEKAH SISTER HIS <TO> SAYING THUS HE SPOKE TO ME THE MAN AND HE WENT TO THE MAN AND THERE! [HE WAS] STANDING WITH THE CAMELS AT THE SPRING
30 As soon as he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and heard. Rebekah’s words, “The man said this to me,” he went and found the man standing by the camels near the spring.
31 AND HE SAID COME O [ONE] BLESSED OF YAHWEH <TO> WHY? ARE YOU STANDING ON THE OUTSIDE AND I I HAVE MADE CLEAR THE HOUSE AND A PLACE FOR THE CAMELS
31 “Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
32 AND HE WENT THE MAN THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND HE UNHARNESSED THE CAMELS AND HE GAVE STRAW AND FODDER TO THE CAMELS AND WATER TO WASH FEET HIS AND [THE] FEET OF THE MEN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM
32 So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.
33 AND IT WAS PUT <TO> BEFORE HIM TO EAT AND HE SAID NOT I WILL EAT UNTIL <IF> I HAVE SPOKEN WORDS MY AND HE SAID SPEAK
33 Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.”
So Laban said, “Please speak.”
34 AND HE SAID [AM] [THE] SERVANT OF ABRAHAM I
34 “I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.
35 AND YAHWEH HE HAS BLESSED <OBJ.> MASTER MY EXCEEDINGLY AND HE HAS BECOME GREAT AND HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> HIM SHEEP AND CATTLE AND SILVER AND GOLD AND [MALE] SERVANTS AND FEMALE SERVANTS AND CAMELS AND DONKEYS
35 “The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and donkeys.
36 AND SHE HAS BORNE SARAH [THE] WIFE OF MASTER MY A SON TO MASTER MY AFTER OLD AGE HER AND HE HAS GIVEN TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM
36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and my master has given him everything he owns
37 AND HE MADE SWEAR AN OATH ME MASTER MY <TO> SAYING NOT YOU MUST TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY FROM [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE CANAANITE[S] WHOM I [AM] DWELLING IN LAND ITS
37 My master made me swear an oath and said, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I dwell,
38 IF NOT TO [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER MY YOU WILL GO AND TO FAMILY MY AND YOU WILL TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY
38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my kindred to take a wife for my son.’
39 AND I SAID TO MASTER MY PERHAPS NOT SHE WILL GO THE WOMAN AFTER ME
39 Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’
40 AND HE SAID TO ME YAHWEH WHOM I HAVE WALKED ABOUT <TO> BEFORE HIM HE WILL SEND ANGEL HIS WITH YOU AND HE WILL MAKE SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY YOUR AND YOU WILL TAKE A WIFE FOR SON MY FROM FAMILY MY AND FROM [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER MY
40 And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
41 THEN YOU WILL BE FREE FROM OATH MY FOR YOU WILL GO TO FAMILY MY AND IF NOT THEY WILL GIVE [HER] TO <THE> YOU AND YOU WILL BE FREE FROM OATH MY
41 And when you go to my kindred, if they refuse to give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’
42 AND I CAME THIS DAY TO THE SPRING AND I SAID O YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF MASTER MY ABRAHAM IF [ARE] THERE YOU PLEASE [ARE] MAKING SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY MY WHICH I [AM] GOING ON IT
42 So when I came to the spring today, I prayed: O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only You would make my journey. a success!
43 HERE! I [AM] STANDING AT [THE] SPRING OF THE WATER AND IT WILL BE THE YOUNG WOMAN WHO WILL COME OUT TO DRAW WATER AND I WILL SAY TO HER GIVE TO DRINK ME PLEASE A LITTLE OF WATER FROM JAR YOUR
43 Here I am, standing beside this spring. Now if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar,’
44 AND SHE WILL SAY TO ME BOTH YOU DRINK AND ALSO FOR CAMELS YOUR I WILL DRAW WATER SHE [BE] THE WOMAN WHOM HE HAS APPOINTED YAHWEH FOR [THE] SON OF MASTER MY
44 and she replies, ‘Drink, and I will draw water for your camels as well,’ may she be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.
45 I NOT YET I HAD FINISHED TO SPEAK TO HEART MY AND THERE! REBEKAH [WAS] COMING OUT AND JAR HER [WAS] ON SHOULDER HER AND SHE WENT DOWN THE SPRING TOWARDS AND SHE DREW WATER AND I SAID TO HER GIVE A DRINK ME PLEASE
45 And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was Rebekah coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
46 AND SHE HURRIED AND SHE PUT DOWN JAR HER FROM ON <THE> HER AND SHE SAID DRINK AND ALSO CAMELS YOUR I WILL GIVE A DRINK TO AND I DRANK AND ALSO THE CAMELS SHE GAVE A DRINK
46 She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels.
47 AND I ASKED <OBJ.> HER AND I SAID DAUGHTER OF WHOM? [ARE] YOU AND SHE SAID [THE] DAUGHTER OF BETHUEL [THE] SON OF NAHOR WHOM SHE BORE TO <THE> HIM MILCAH AND I PUT THE RING ON NOSE HER AND THE BRACELETS ON HANDS HER
47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’
She replied, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
48 AND I BOWED LOW AND I BOWED DOWN TO YAHWEH AND I BLESSED <OBJ.> YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF MASTER MY ABRAHAM WHO HE HAD LED ME IN [THE] WAY OF TRUTH TO TAKE <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTER OF [THE] BROTHER OF MASTER MY FOR SON HIS
48 Then I bowed down and worshiped the LORD; and I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right road to take the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.
49 AND NOW IF [ARE] THERE YOU DOING LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS WITH MASTER MY TELL TO <THE> ME AND IF NOT TELL TO <THE> ME SO I MAY TURN TO RIGHT OR TO LEFT
49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know so that I may go elsewhere
50 AND HE ANSWERED LABAN AND BETHUEL AND THEY SAID FROM YAHWEH IT HAS COME OUT THE MATTER NOT WE ARE ABLE TO SPEAK TO YOU EVIL OR GOOD
50 Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we have no choice in the matter.
51 HERE! REBEKAH [IS] <TO> BEFORE YOU TAKE [HER] AND GO SO MAY SHE BE A WIFE FOR [THE] SON OF MASTER<S> YOUR JUST AS HE HAS SPOKEN YAHWEH
51 Rebekah is here before you. Take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, just as the LORD has decreed.”
52 AND IT WAS JUST AS HE HEARD [THE] SERVANT OF ABRAHAM <OBJ.> WORDS THEIR AND HE BOWED DOWN [THE] GROUND TOWARDS TO YAHWEH
52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
53 AND HE BROUGHT OUT THE SERVANT ARTICLES OF SILVER AND ARTICLES OF GOLD AND GARMENTS AND HE GAVE [THEM] TO REBEKAH AND PRECIOUS GIFTS HE GAVE TO BROTHER HER AND TO MOTHER HER
53 Then he brought out jewels of silver and gold, and articles of clothing, and he gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother.
54 AND THEY ATE AND THEY DRANK HE AND THE MEN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND THEY STAYED [THE] NIGHT AND THEY AROSE IN THE MORNING AND HE SAID SEND AWAY ME TO MASTER MY
54 Then he and the men with him ate and drank and spent the night there.
When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”
55 AND HE SAID BROTHER HER AND MOTHER HER LET HER REMAIN THE YOUNG WOMAN WITH US DAYS OR TEN AFTER SHE WILL GO
55 But her brother and mother said, “Let the girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she may go.”
56 AND HE SAID TO THEM MAY NOT YOU DELAY <OBJ.> ME AND YAHWEH HE HAS MADE SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY MY SEND AWAY ME SO LET ME GO TO MASTER MY
56 But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
57 AND THEY SAID LET US SUMMON <TO> THE YOUNG WOMAN AND LET US ASK <OBJ.> MOUTH HER
57 So they said, “We will call the girl and ask her opinion.”
58 AND THEY SUMMONED <TO> REBEKAH AND THEY SAID TO HER ¿ WILL YOU GO WITH THE MAN <THE> THIS AND SHE SAID I WILL GO
58 They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”
“I will go,” she replied.
59 AND THEY SENT AWAY <OBJ.> REBEKAH SISTER THEIR AND <OBJ.> SUCKLING-NURSE HER AND <OBJ.> [THE] SERVANT OF ABRAHAM AND <OBJ.> MEN HIS
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.
60 AND THEY BLESSED <OBJ.> REBEKAH AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HER O SISTER OUR YOU BECOME <INTO> THOUSANDS OF TEN THOUSAND SO MAY IT TAKE POSSESSION OF OFFSPRING YOUR <OBJ.> [THE] GATE OF [THOSE WHO] HATE IT
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
“Our sister, may you become the mother
of thousands upon thousands.
May your offspring possess
the gates of their enemies.”
61 AND SHE AROSE REBEKAH AND MAIDS HER AND THEY RODE ON THE CAMELS AND THEY WENT AFTER THE MAN AND HE TOOK THE SERVANT <OBJ.> REBEKAH AND HE WENT
61 Then Rebekah and her servant girls got ready, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 AND ISAAC HE CAME FROM GOING BEER LAHAI ROI AND HE [WAS] DWELLING IN [THE] LAND OF THE NEGEV
Isaac Marries Rebekah
62 Now Isaac had just returned from Beer-lahai-roi, for he was living in the Negev.
63 AND HE WENT OUT ISAAC TO MEDITATE IN THE FIELD TO [THE] TURNING OF EVENING AND HE LIFTED UP EYES HIS AND HE SAW AND THERE! CAMELS [WERE] COMING
63 Early in the evening, Isaac went out to the field to meditate, and looking up, he saw the camels approaching.
64 AND SHE LIFTED UP REBEKAH <OBJ.> EYES HER AND SHE SAW <OBJ.> ISAAC AND SHE FELL FROM ON THE CAMEL
64 And when Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she got down from her camel
65 AND SHE SAID TO THE SERVANT WHO? [IS] THE MAN THIS WHO IS WALKING IN THE FIELD TO MEET US AND HE SAID THE SERVANT IT [IS] MASTER MY AND SHE TOOK THE VEIL AND SHE COVERED HERSELF
65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”
“It is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.
66 AND HE RECOUNTED THE SERVANT TO ISAAC <OBJ.> ALL THE THINGS WHICH HE HAD DONE
66 Then the servant told Isaac all that he had done.
67 AND HE BROUGHT HER ISAAC THE TENT OF TOWARDS SARAH MOTHER HIS AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> REBEKAH AND SHE BECAME OF HIM <INTO> A WIFE AND HE LOVED HER AND HE WAS COMFORTED ISAAC AFTER MOTHER HIS
67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah and took Rebekah as his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after his mother’s death.
