34AND JACOB HE GAVE TO ESAU BREAD AND COOKED FOOD OF LENTILS AND HE ATE AND HE DRANK AND HE AROSE AND HE WENT AND HE DESPISED ESAU <OBJ.> THE BIRTHRIGHT 34Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
1AND IT WAS A FAMINE IN THE LAND <FROM> <TO> BESIDES THE FAMINE <THE> FORMER WHICH IT WAS IN [THE] DAYS OF ABRAHAM AND HE WENT ISAAC TO ABIMELECH [THE] KING OF [THE] PHILISTINES GERAR TOWARDS God’s Promise to Isaac (Genesis 12:1–9) 1Now there was another famine in the land, subsequent to the one that had occurred in Abraham’s time. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar.
2AND HE APPEARED TO HIM YAHWEH AND HE SAID MAY NOT YOU GO DOWN EGYPT TOWARDS DWELL IN THE LAND WHICH I WILL SAY TO YOU 2The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
3SOJOURN IN THE LAND <THE> THIS SO I MAY BE WITH YOU AND I WILL BLESS YOU FOR TO YOU AND TO OFFSPRING YOUR I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> ALL THE LANDS <THE> THESE AND I WILL ESTABLISH <OBJ.> THE OATH WHICH I SWORE TO ABRAHAM FATHER YOUR 3Stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.
4AND I WILL MULTIPLY <OBJ.> OFFSPRING YOUR LIKE [THE] STARS OF THE HEAVENS AND I WILL GIVE TO OFFSPRING YOUR <OBJ.> ALL THE LANDS <THE> THESE AND THEY WILL BLESS THEMSELVES BY OFFSPRING YOUR ALL [THE] NATIONS OF THE EARTH 4I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and I will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed,
5CONSEQUENCE THAT HE LISTENED ABRAHAM TO VOICE MY AND HE KEPT DUTY MY COMMANDMENTS MY STATUTES MY AND LAWS MY 5because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
7AND THEY ASKED [THE] MEN OF THE PLACE OF WIFE HIS AND HE SAID [IS] SISTER MY SHE FOR HE WAS AFRAID TO SAY WIFE MY LEST THEY SHOULD KILL ME [THE] MEN OF THE PLACE ON REBEKAH FOR [WAS] GOOD OF APPEARANCE SHE 7But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” since he thought to himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is so beautiful
8AND IT WAS THAT THEY HAD BECOME LONG TO <THE> HIM THERE THE DAYS AND HE LOOKED DOWN ABIMELECH [THE] KING OF [THE] PHILISTINES THROUGH THE WINDOW AND HE SAW AND THERE! ISAAC [WAS] PLAYING WITH REBEKAH WIFE HIS 8When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.
9AND HE SUMMONED ABIMELECH <TO> ISAAC AND HE SAID SURELY HERE! [IS] WIFE YOUR SHE AND HOW? DID YOU SAY [IS] SISTER MY SHE AND HE SAID TO HIM ISAAC FOR I THOUGHT LEST I SHOULD DIE ON HER 9Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
10AND HE SAID ABIMELECH WHAT? THIS HAVE YOU DONE TO <THE> US LIKE A LITTLE HE LAY WITH ONE OF THE PEOPLE <OBJ.> WIFE YOUR AND YOU WILL BRING ON US GUILT 10“What is this you have done to us?” asked Abimelech. “One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11AND HE COMMANDED ABIMELECH <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE <TO> SAYING WHO [-EVER] TOUCHES <IN> THE MAN <THE> THIS AND <IN> WIFE HIS CERTAINLY <TO DIE> HE WILL BE PUT TO DEATH 11So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will surely be put to death
12AND HE SOWED ISAAC IN THE LAND <THE> THAT AND HE FOUND IN THE YEAR <THE> THAT ONE HUNDRED MEASURES AND HE BLESSED HIM YAHWEH Isaac’s Prosperity 12Now Isaac sowed seed in the land, and that very year he reaped a hundredfold. And the LORD blessed him,
13AND HE BECAME GREAT THE MAN AND HE WENT CONTINUOUSLY <TO GO> AND BECOMING GREAT UNTIL FOR HE BECAME GREAT EXCEEDINGLY 13and he became richer and richer until he was exceedingly wealthy.
14AND IT BE[LONGED] TO <THE> HIM LIVESTOCK OF FLOCK AND LIVESTOCK OF HERD AND SERVICE MUCH AND THEY ENVIED <OBJ.> HIM [THE] PHILISTINES 14He owned so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.
15AND ALL THE WELLS WHICH THEY HAD DUG [THE] SERVANTS OF FATHER HIS IN [THE] DAYS OF ABRAHAM FATHER HIS THEY STOPPED UP THEM [THE] PHILISTINES AND THEY FILLED THEM EARTH 15So the Philistines took dirt and stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham.
16AND HE SAID ABIMELECH TO ISAAC GO FROM WITH <THE> US FOR YOU HAVE BECOME [TOO] POWERFUL FOR US MUCH 16Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Depart from us, for you are much too powerful for us.”
17AND HE WENT FROM THERE ISAAC AND HE ENCAMPED IN [THE] WADI OF GERAR AND HE DWELT THERE 17So Isaac left that place and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there.
18AND HE RETURNED ISAAC AND HE DUG <OBJ.> [THE] WELLS OF <THE> WATER WHICH PEOPLE HAD DUG IN [THE] DAYS OF ABRAHAM FATHER HIS AND THEY HAD STOPPED UP THEM [THE] PHILISTINES AFTER [THE] DEATH OF ABRAHAM AND HE CALLED <TO> <THE> THEM NAMES LIKE THE NAMES WHICH HE HAD CALLED <TO> <THE> THEM FATHER HIS 18Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. And he gave these wells the same names his father had given them.
19AND THEY DUG [THE] SERVANTS OF ISAAC IN THE WADI AND THEY FOUND THERE A WELL OF WATER LIVING 19Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found a well of fresh water*NoteCloseOr flowing water or living water there.
20AND THEY DISPUTED [THE] HERDSMEN OF GERAR WITH [THE] HERDSMEN OF ISAAC <TO> SAYING [BELONGS] TO <THE> US THE WATER AND HE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE WELL ESEK FOR THEY QUARRELED WITH HIM 20But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,*NoteCloseEsek means contention. because they contended with him.
21AND THEY DUG A WELL ANOTHER AND THEY DISPUTED ALSO ON IT AND HE CALLED NAME ITS SITNAH 21Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.*NoteCloseSitnah means enmity or hostility.
22AND HE MOVED ON FROM THERE AND HE DUG A WELL ANOTHER AND NOT THEY DISPUTED ON IT AND HE CALLED NAME ITS REHOBOTH AND HE SAID THAT NOW HE HAS MADE SPACE YAHWEH FOR <THE> US AND WE WILL BE FRUITFUL IN THE LAND 22He moved on from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth*NoteCloseRehoboth means broad places or open spaces. and said, “At last the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
24AND HE APPEARED TO HIM YAHWEH IN THE NIGHT <THE> THAT AND HE SAID I [AM] [THE] GOD OF ABRAHAM FATHER YOUR MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FOR [AM] WITH YOU I AND I WILL BLESS YOU AND I WILL MULTIPLY <OBJ.> OFFSPRING YOUR FOR SAKE OF ABRAHAM SERVANT MY 24and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
25AND HE BUILT THERE AN ALTAR AND HE CALLED ON [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH AND HE PITCHED THERE TENT HIS AND THEY DUG THERE [THE] SERVANTS OF ISAAC A WELL 25So Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there. His servants also dug a well there.
26AND ABIMELECH HE CAME TO HIM FROM GERAR AND AHUZZAH CLOSE FRIEND HIS AND PHICOL [THE] COMMANDER OF ARMY HIS Isaac’s Covenant with Abimelech 26Later, Abimelech came to Isaac from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.
27AND HE SAID TO THEM ISAAC WHY? HAVE YOU COME TO ME AND YOU YOU HATE <OBJ.> ME AND YOU SENT AWAY ME FROM WITH <THE> YOU 27“Why have you come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You hated me and sent me away
28AND THEY SAID CERTAINLY <TO SEE> WE HAVE SEEN THAT HE HAS BEEN YAHWEH WITH YOU AND WE SAID LET IT BE PLEASE AN OATH BETWEEN US BETWEEN US AND BETWEEN YOU AND LET US MAKE A COVENANT WITH YOU 28“We can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you
29IF YOU WILL DO WITH US HARM JUST AS NOT WE HAVE TOUCHED YOU AND JUST AS WE HAVE DONE WITH YOU ONLY GOOD AND WE SENT AWAY YOU IN PEACE YOU NOW [ARE] BLESSED OF YAHWEH 29that you will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
30AND HE PREPARED FOR <THE> THEM A FEAST AND THEY ATE AND THEY DRANK 30So Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank.
31AND THEY ROSE EARLY IN THE MORNING AND THEY SWORE AN OATH EACH TO BROTHER HIS AND HE SENT OFF THEM ISAAC AND THEY WENT FROM WITH <THE> HIM IN PEACE 31And they got up early the next morning and swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace.
32AND IT WAS ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND THEY CAME [THE] SERVANTS OF ISAAC AND THEY TOLD TO <THE> HIM ON [THE] CAUSES OF THE WELL WHICH THEY HAD DUG AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HIM WE HAVE FOUND WATER 32On that same day, Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. “We have found water!” they told him.
33AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> IT SHIBAH THERE- -FORE [THE] NAME OF THE CITY [IS] BEER SHEBA UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 33So he called it Shibah,*NoteCloseShibah can mean oath or seven. and to this day the name of the city is Beersheba.*NoteCloseBeersheba means well of seven or well of the oath.
34AND HE WAS ESAU A SON OF FORTY YEAR[S] AND HE TOOK A WIFE <OBJ.> JUDITH [THE] DAUGHTER OF BEERI THE HITTITE AND <OBJ.> BASEMATH [THE] DAUGHTER OF ELON THE HITTITE Esau’s Wives 34When Esau was forty years old, he took as his wives Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.
35AND THEY WERE BITTERNESS OF SPIRIT TO ISAAC AND TO REBEKAH 35And they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
