35AND THEY WERE BITTERNESS OF SPIRIT TO ISAAC AND TO REBEKAH 35And they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
1AND IT WAS FOR HE WAS OLD ISAAC AND THEY WERE [TOO] DIM EYES HIS FOR SEEING AND HE SUMMONED <OBJ.> ESAU SON HIS <THE> OLD AND HE SAID TO HIM O SON MY AND HE SAID TO HIM HERE [AM] I Isaac Blesses Jacob (Hebrews 11:20) 1When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,” Esau replied.
2AND HE SAID HERE! PLEASE I AM OLD NOT I KNOW [THE] DAY OF DEATH MY 2“Look,” said Isaac, “I am now old, and I do not know the day of my death.
3AND THEREFORE TAKE UP PLEASE WEAPONS YOUR QUIVER YOUR AND BOW YOUR AND GO OUT THE FIELD AND HUNT! FOR <THE> ME WILD GAME 3Take your weapons— your quiver and bow— and go out into the field to hunt some game for me.
4AND PREPARE FOR <THE> ME SAVORY FOOD<S> JUST AS I LOVE AND BRING [IT]! TO <THE> ME SO LET ME EAT [IT] IN ORDER THAT IT MAY BLESS YOU SELF MY <IN> BEFORE I WILL DIE 4Then prepare a tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I may bless you before I die.”
5AND REBEKAH [WAS] LISTENING WHEN SPOKE ISAAC TO ESAU SON HIS AND HE WENT ESAU [TO] THE FIELD TO HUNT WILD GAME TO BRING [IT] 5Now Rebekah was listening to what Isaac told his son Esau. So when Esau went into the field to hunt game and bring it back,
6AND REBEKAH SHE SAID TO JACOB SON HER <TO> SAYING HERE! I HAVE HEARD <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR SPEAKING TO ESAU BROTHER YOUR <TO> SAYING 6Rebekah said to her son Jacob “Behold, I overheard your father saying to your brother Esau,
7BRING! TO <THE> ME WILD GAME AND PREPARE FOR <THE> ME SAVORY FOOD<S> SO LET ME EAT [IT] SO I MAY BLESS YOU <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH <TO> BEFORE DEATH MY 7‘Bring me some game and prepare me a tasty dish to eat, so that I may bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’
8AND THEREFORE O SON MY LISTEN TO VOICE MY TO [THAT] WHICH I [AM] COMMANDING <OBJ.> YOU 8Now, my son, listen to my voice and do exactly as I tell you.
9GO PLEASE TO THE FLOCK AND FETCH FOR <THE> ME FROM THERE TWO KIDS OF GOATS GOOD SO I MAY PREPARE <OBJ.> THEM SAVORY FOOD<S> FOR FATHER YOUR JUST AS HE LOVES 9Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so that I can make them into a tasty dish for your father— the kind he loves.
10AND YOU WILL BRING [IT] TO FATHER YOUR AND HE WILL EAT [IT] IN ORDER THAT THIS HE MAY BLESS YOU <TO> BEFORE DEATH HIS 10Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”
11AND HE SAID JACOB TO REBEKAH MOTHER HIS HERE! ESAU BROTHER MY [IS] A MAN HAIRY AND I [AM] A MAN SMOOTH 11Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am smooth-skinned.
12PERHAPS HE WILL FEEL ME FATHER MY AND I WILL BE IN VIEW HIS LIKE A MOCKER AND I WILL BRING ON MYSELF A CURSE AND NOT A BLESSING 12What if my father touches me? Then I would be revealed to him as a deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a curse rather than a blessing.”
13AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HIM MOTHER HIS [BE] ON ME CURSE YOUR O SON MY ONLY LISTEN TO VOICE MY AND GO FETCH [THEM] FOR <THE> ME 13His mother replied “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”
14AND HE WENT AND HE FETCHED [THEM] AND HE BROUGHT [THEM] TO MOTHER HIS AND SHE PREPARED MOTHER HIS SAVORY FOOD<S> JUST AS HE LOVED FATHER HIS 14So Jacob went and got two goats and brought them to his mother, who made the tasty food his father loved.
15AND SHE TOOK REBEKAH <OBJ.> [THE] CLOTHES OF ESAU SON HER <THE> OLD THE DESIRABLENESS<ES> WHICH [WERE] WITH HER IN THE HOUSE AND SHE CLOTHED <OBJ.> JACOB SON HER <THE> YOUNG 15And Rebekah took the finest clothes in the house that belonged to her older son Esau, and she put them on her younger son Jacob.
16AND <OBJ.> [THE] SKINS OF [THE] KIDS OF THE GOATS SHE CLOTHED ON HANDS HIS AND ON [THE] SMOOTH PART OF NECK<S> HIS 16She also put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
17AND SHE PUT <OBJ.> THE SAVORY FOOD<S> AND <OBJ.> THE BREAD WHICH SHE HAD PREPARED IN [THE] HAND OF JACOB SON HER 17Then she handed her son Jacob the tasty food and bread she had made.
18AND HE WENT TO FATHER HIS AND HE SAID O FATHER MY AND HE SAID HERE [AM] I WHO? [ARE] YOU O SON MY 18So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.” “Here I am!” he answered. “Which one are you, my son?”
19AND HE SAID JACOB TO FATHER HIS I [AM] ESAU FIRSTBORN YOUR I HAVE DONE JUST AS YOU SAID TO ME ARISE PLEASE SIT! AND EAT! SOME OF WILD GAME MY IN ORDER THAT <IT> MAY BLESS ME SELF YOUR 19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may bless me.”
20AND HE SAID ISAAC TO SON HIS WHAT? THIS HAVE YOU HASTENED TO FIND [IT] O SON MY AND HE SAID FOR HE MADE HAPPEN YAHWEH GOD YOUR <TO> BEFORE ME 20But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
21AND HE SAID ISAAC TO JACOB DRAW NEAR! PLEASE SO I MAY FEEL YOU O SON MY ¿ [ARE] YOU THIS SON MY ESAU OR? NOT 21Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau, or not?”
22AND HE DREW NEAR JACOB TO ISAAC FATHER HIS AND HE FELT HIM AND HE SAID THE VOICE [IS] [THE] VOICE OF JACOB AND THE HANDS [ARE] [THE] HANDS OF ESAU 22So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
23AND NOT HE RECOGNIZED HIM FOR THEY WERE HANDS HIS LIKE [THE] HANDS OF ESAU BROTHER HIS HAIRY AND HE BLESSED HIM 23Isaac did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.
24AND HE SAID [ARE] YOU? THIS SON MY ESAU AND HE SAID I 24Again he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”
25AND HE SAID BRING [IT] NEAR! TO <THE> ME SO LET ME EAT SOME OF [THE] WILD GAME OF SON MY SO THAT IT MAY BLESS YOU SELF MY AND HE BROUGHT [IT] NEAR TO <THE> HIM AND HE ATE AND HE BROUGHT TO <THE> HIM WINE AND HE DRANK 25“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he ate; then he brought him wine, and he drank.
26AND HE SAID TO HIM ISAAC FATHER HIS DRAW NEAR! PLEASE AND KISS! <TO> <THE> ME O SON MY 26Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.”
27AND HE DREW NEAR AND HE KISSED <TO> <THE> HIM AND HE SMELLED <OBJ.> [THE] SMELL OF CLOTHES HIS AND HE BLESSED HIM AND HE SAID SEE [THE] SMELL OF SON MY [IS] LIKE [THE] SMELL OF A FIELD WHICH HE HAS BLESSED IT YAHWEH 27So he came near and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and said: “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.
28AND MAY HE GIVE TO <THE> YOU <THE> GOD SOME OF [THE] DEW OF THE HEAVENS AND SOME OF [THE] FATNESS<ES> OF THE EARTH AND ABUNDANCE OF GRAIN AND NEW WINE 28May God give to you the dew of heaven and the richness of the earth— an abundance of grain and new wine.
29MAY THEY SERVE YOU PEOPLES AND MAY THEY BOW DOWN TO <THE> YOU PEOPLES BE LORD TO BROTHERS YOUR SO MAY THEY BOW DOWN TO <THE> YOU [THE] SONS OF MOTHER YOUR [THOSE WHO] CURSE YOU [BE] CURSED AND [THOSE WHO] BLESS YOU [BE] BLESSED 29May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”
30AND IT WAS JUST AS HE HAD FINISHED ISAAC TO BLESS <OBJ.> JACOB AND IT WAS SURELY CERTAINLY <TO GO OUT> HE HAD GONE OUT JACOB FROM WITH [THE] FACE OF ISAAC FATHER HIS AND ESAU BROTHER HIS HE CAME FROM HUNTING HIS Esau’s Lost Hope 30As soon as Isaac had finished blessing him and Jacob had left his father’s presence, his brother Esau returned from the hunt.
31AND HE PREPARED ALSO HE SAVORY FOOD<S> AND HE BROUGHT [IT] TO FATHER HIS AND HE SAID TO FATHER HIS LET HIM ARISE FATHER MY AND LET HIM EAT SOME OF [THE] WILD GAME OF SON HIS IN ORDER THAT <IT> MAY BLESS ME SELF YOUR 31He too made some tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may bless me.”
32AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM ISAAC FATHER HIS WHO? [ARE] YOU AND HE SAID I [AM] SON YOUR FIRSTBORN YOUR ESAU 32But his father Isaac replied “Who are you?” “I am Esau, your firstborn son,” he answered.
33AND HE TREMBLED ISAAC TREMBLING GREAT UP TO MUCHNESS AND HE SAID WHO? THEN [IS] HE WHO HUNTED WILD GAME AND HE BROUGHT [IT] TO <THE> ME AND I ATE SOME OF EVERYTHING <IN> BEFORE YOU CAME AND I BLESSED HIM ALSO BLESSED HE WILL BE 33Isaac began to tremble violently and said, “Who was it, then, who hunted the game and brought it to me? Before you came in, I ate it all and blessed him— and indeed, he will be blessed!”
34WHEN HEARD ESAU <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF FATHER HIS AND HE CRIED A CRY GREAT AND BITTER UP TO MUCHNESS AND HE SAID TO FATHER HIS BLESS ME ALSO ME O FATHER MY 34When Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, O my father!”
35AND HE SAID HE CAME BROTHER YOUR WITH DECEIT AND HE TOOK BLESSING YOUR 35But Isaac replied, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”
36AND HE SAID ¿ FOR DID SOMEONE CALL NAME HIS JACOB AND HE HAS SUPPLANTED ME THIS TWO TIMES <OBJ.> BIRTHRIGHT MY HE TOOK AND HERE! NOW HE HAS TAKEN BLESSING MY AND HE SAID ¿ NOT HAVE YOU RESERVED FOR <THE> ME A BLESSING 36So Esau declared, “Is he not rightly named Jacob?*NoteCloseJacob means he grasps the heel or he deceives. For he has cheated me twice. He took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”
37AND HE ANSWERED ISAAC AND HE SAID TO ESAU HERE! LORD I HAVE APPOINTED HIM TO <THE> YOU AND <OBJ.> ALL BROTHERS HIS I HAVE GIVEN TO <THE> HIM TO SERVANTS AND GRAIN AND NEW WINE I HAVE SUSTAINED HIM AND FOR <THE> YOU THEN WHAT? WILL I DO O SON MY 37But Isaac answered Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
38AND HE SAID ESAU TO FATHER HIS ¿ [DOES] A BLESSING ONE IT [BELONG] TO <THE> YOU O FATHER MY BLESS ME ALSO ME O FATHER MY AND HE LIFTED UP ESAU VOICE HIS AND HE WEPT 38Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, O my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.
39AND HE ANSWERED ISAAC FATHER HIS AND HE SAID TO HIM THERE! AWAY FROM [THE] FATNESS<ES> OF THE EARTH IT WILL BE DWELLING YOUR AND AWAY FROM [THE] DEW OF THE HEAVENS <FROM> ABOVE 39His father Isaac answered him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from the richness of the land, away from the dew of heaven above.
40AND ON SWORD YOUR YOU WILL LIVE AND <OBJ.> BROTHER YOUR YOU WILL SERVE AND IT WILL BE JUST AS YOU WILL BE RESTLESS AND YOU WILL TEAR OFF YOKE HIS FROM ON NECK YOUR 40You shall live by the sword and serve your brother. But when you rebel, you will tear his yoke from your neck.”
41AND HE BORE A GRUDGE AGAINST ESAU <OBJ.> JACOB ON THE BLESSING WHICH HE HAD BLESSED HIM FATHER HIS AND HE SAID ESAU IN HEART HIS THEY WILL DRAW NEAR [THE] DAYS OF [THE] MOURNING OF FATHER MY AND I WILL KILL <OBJ.> JACOB BROTHER MY 41Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42AND IT WAS TOLD TO REBEKAH <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF ESAU SON HER <THE> OLD AND SHE SENT AND SHE SUMMONED <TO> JACOB SON HER <THE> YOUNG AND SHE SAID TO HIM HERE! ESAU BROTHER YOUR [IS] COMFORTING HIMSELF TO <THE> YOU BY KILLING YOU 42When the words of her older son Esau were relayed to Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you.
43AND THEREFORE O SON MY LISTEN TO VOICE MY AND ARISE FLEE FOR <THE> YOURSELF TO LABAN BROTHER MY HARAN TOWARDS 43So now, my son, obey my voice and flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.
44AND YOU WILL REMAIN WITH HIM DAYS ONE<S> UNTIL THAT IT WILL TURN BACK [THE] ANGER OF BROTHER YOUR 44Stay with him for a while, until your brother’s fury subsides—
45UNTIL TURNS BACK [THE] ANGER OF BROTHER YOUR FROM YOU AND HE WILL FORGET <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH YOU DID TO <THE> HIM AND I WILL SEND AND I WILL FETCH YOU FROM THERE <TO> WHY? WILL I BE BEREAVED ALSO BOTH OF YOU A DAY ONE 45until your brother’s rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
46AND SHE SAID REBEKAH TO ISAAC I LOATHE <IN> LIFE MY <FROM> BECAUSE OF [THE] DAUGHTERS OF HETH IF [IS] TAKING JACOB A WIFE FROM [THE] DAUGHTERS OF HETH LIKE THESE FROM [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE LAND <TO> WHY? [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME LIFE 46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of these Hittite women.*NoteCloseOr daughters of Heth If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among them, what good is my life?”
