31AND THEY SAID ¿ LIKE A PROSTITUTE WILL HE USE <OBJ.> SISTER OUR 31But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
1AND HE SAID GOD TO JACOB ARISE GO UP BETH- -EL AND DWELL THERE AND MAKE THERE AN ALTAR TO THE GOD WHO APPEARED TO YOU WHEN FLEEING YOU FROM BEFORE ESAU BROTHER YOUR Jacob Returns to Bethel 1Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”
2AND HE SAID JACOB TO HOUSEHOLD HIS AND TO ALL WHO [WERE] WITH HIM REMOVE <OBJ.> [THE] GODS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS WHICH IN MIDST OF YOU AND PURIFY YOURSELVES AND CHANGE CLOTHES YOUR 2So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your garments.
3SO LET US ARISE AND WE MAY GO UP BETH- -EL SO I MAY MAKE THERE AN ALTAR TO THE GOD WHO ANSWERED <OBJ.> ME ON [THE] DAY OF DISTRESS MY AND HE HAS BEEN WITH ME ON THE JOURNEY WHICH I HAVE GONE 3Then let us arise and go to Bethel. I will build an altar there to God, who answered me in my day of distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone.”
4AND THEY GAVE TO JACOB <OBJ.> ALL [THE] GODS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS WHICH [WERE] IN HAND THEIR AND <OBJ.> THE RINGS WHICH [WERE] IN EARS THEIR AND HE HID <OBJ.> THEM JACOB UNDER THE OAK WHICH [WAS] NEAR SHECHEM 4So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods and all their earrings and Jacob buried them under the oak*NoteCloseOr terebinth or great tree near Shechem.
5AND THEY SET OUT AND IT WAS [THE] TERROR OF GOD ON THE CITIES WHICH [WERE] AROUND THEM AND NOT PEOPLE PURSUED AFTER [THE] SONS OF JACOB 5As they set out, a terror from God fell over the surrounding cities, so that they did not pursue Jacob’s sons.
6AND HE CAME JACOB LUZ TOWARDS WHICH [IS] IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN THAT [IS] BETH- -EL HE AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM 6So Jacob and everyone with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
7AND HE BUILT THERE AN ALTAR AND HE CALLED <TO> THE PLACE EL BETH- -EL FOR THERE THEY HAD REVEALED THEMSELVES TO HIM <THE> GOD WHEN FLED HE FROM BEFORE BROTHER HIS 7There Jacob built an altar, and he called that place El-bethel,*NoteCloseEl-bethel means God of Bethel. because it was there that God had revealed Himself to Jacob as he fled from his brother.
8AND SHE DIED DEBORAH [THE] SUCKLING-NURSE OF REBEKAH AND SHE WAS BURIED FROM UNDER TO BETH- -EL UNDER THE OAK AND SOMEONE CALLED NAME ITS ALLON BACUTH 8Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak*NoteCloseOr great tree below Bethel. So Jacob named it Allon-bacuth.*NoteCloseAllon-bacuth means oak of weeping.
9AND HE APPEARED GOD TO JACOB AGAIN WHEN CAME HE FROM PADDAN ARAM AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> HIM 9After Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram,*NoteCloseThat is, northwest Mesopotamia; also in verse 26 God appeared to him again and blessed him.
10AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM GOD NAME YOUR [IS] JACOB NOT IT WILL BE CALLED NAME YOUR AGAIN JACOB THAT EXCEPT ISRAEL IT WILL BE NAME YOUR AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> NAME HIS ISRAEL 10And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob,*NoteCloseJacob means he grasps the heel or he deceives. you will no longer be called Jacob. Instead, your name will be Israel.*NoteCloseIsrael means he struggles with God. ” So God named him Israel.
11AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM GOD I [AM] GOD ALMIGHTY BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY A NATION AND A COMPANY OF NATIONS IT WILL BE FROM YOU AND KINGS FROM LOINS YOUR THEY WILL COME OUT 11And God told him, “I am God Almighty.*NoteCloseHebrew El-Shaddai Be fruitful and multiply. A nation— even a company of nations— shall come from you, and kings shall descend from you.
12AND <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH I GAVE TO ABRAHAM AND TO ISAAC TO <THE> YOU I WILL GIVE IT AND TO OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> THE LAND 12The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.”
13AND HE WENT UP FROM WITH <THE> HIM GOD AT THE PLACE WHERE HE HAD SPOKEN WITH HIM 13Then God went up from the place where He had spoken with him.
14AND HE SET UP JACOB A PILLAR AT THE PLACE WHERE HE HAD SPOKEN WITH HIM A PILLAR OF STONE AND HE POURED OUT ON IT A DRINK OFFERING AND HE POURED ON IT OIL 14So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God had spoken with him— a stone marker— and he poured out a drink offering on it and anointed it with oil.
15AND HE CALLED JACOB <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE WHERE HE HAD SPOKEN WITH HIM THERE GOD BETH- -EL 15Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.*NoteCloseBethel means house of God.
16AND THEY SET OUT FROM BETH- -EL AND IT WAS YET [THE] DISTANCE OF THE LAND TO GO EPHRATHAH AND SHE GAVE BIRTH RACHEL AND SHE HAD DIFFICULTIES WHEN GAVE BIRTH SHE Benjamin Born, Rachel Dies 16Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult.
17AND IT WAS WHEN HAD DIFFICULTIES SHE WHEN GAVE BIRTH SHE AND SHE SAID TO <THE> HER THE MIDWIFE MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FOR ALSO THIS [ONE] FOR <THE> YOU [IS] A SON 17During her severe labor, the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you are having another son.”
18AND IT WAS WHEN WENT OUT LIFE HER FOR SHE DIED AND SHE CALLED NAME HIS BEN- ONI AND FATHER HIS HE CALLED <TO> <THE> HIM BENJAMIN 18And with her last breath— for she was dying— she named him Ben-oni.*NoteCloseBen-oni could mean son of my sorrow or son of my strength. But his father called him Benjamin.*NoteCloseBenjamin means son of my right hand.
19AND SHE DIED RACHEL AND SHE WAS BURIED ON [THE] WAY OF EPHRATHAH THAT [IS] BETH- -LEHEM 19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20AND HE SET UP JACOB A PILLAR OVER GRAVE HER IT [IS] [THE] PILLAR OF [THE] GRAVE OF RACHEL UNTIL THIS DAY 20Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it marks Rachel’s tomb to this day.
21AND HE SET OUT ISRAEL AND HE PITCHED TENT HIS FROM BEYOND <TO> MIGDAL EDER The Sons of Jacob (1 Chronicles 2:1–2) 21Israel again set out and pitched his tent beyond the Tower of Eder.
22AND IT WAS WHEN DWELT ISRAEL IN THE LAND <THE> THAT AND HE WENT REUBEN AND HE LAY WITH <OBJ.> BILHAH [THE] CONCUBINE OF FATHER OF HIS AND HE HEARD ISRAEL AND THEY WERE [THE] SONS OF JACOB TWO [PLUS] TEN 22While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons:
23[THE] SONS OF LEAH [THE] FIRSTBORN OF JACOB REUBEN AND SIMEON AND LEVI AND JUDAH AND ISSACHAR AND ZEBULUN 23The sons of Leah were Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
25AND [THE] SONS OF BILHAH [THE] MAIDSERVANT OF RACHEL DAN AND NAPHTALI 25The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.
26AND [THE] SONS OF ZILPAH [THE] MAIDSERVANT OF LEAH GAD AND ASHER THESE [WERE] [THE] SONS OF JACOB WHO IT WAS BORN TO <THE> HIM IN PADDAN ARAM 26And the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27AND HE CAME JACOB TO ISAAC FATHER HIS MAMRE KIRIATH <THE> ARBA THAT [IS] HEBRON WHERE HE HAD SOJOURNED THERE ABRAHAM AND ISAAC The Death of Isaac 27Jacob returned to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.
28AND THEY WERE [THE] DAYS OF ISAAC ONE HUNDRED YEAR[S] AND EIGHTY YEAR[S] 28And Isaac lived 180 years.
29AND HE EXPIRED ISAAC AND HE DIED AND HE WAS GATHERED TO PEOPLE<S> HIS AN OLD [MAN] AND SATISFIED OF DAYS AND THEY BURIED <OBJ.> HIM ESAU AND JACOB SONS HIS 29Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
