20AND HE SET UP THERE AN ALTAR AND HE CALLED <TO> <THE> IT EL ELOHE ISRAEL 20There he set up an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.*NoteCloseEl-Elohe-Israel means God is the God of Israel or mighty is the God of Israel.
1AND SHE WENT OUT DINAH [THE] DAUGHTER OF LEAH WHOM SHE HAD BORNE TO JACOB TO LOOK ON [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE LAND The Defiling of Dinah 1Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.
2AND HE SAW <OBJ.> HER SHECHEM [THE] SON OF HAMOR THE HIVITE [THE] CHIEF OF THE LAND AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> HER AND HE LAY WITH WITH <THE> HER AND HE HUMILIATED HER 2When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the region, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force.
3AND IT CLEAVED SELF HIS TO DINAH [THE] DAUGHTER OF JACOB AND HE LOVED <OBJ.> THE GIRL AND HE SPOKE TO [THE] HEART OF THE GIRL 3And his soul was drawn to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young girl and spoke to her tenderly.
4AND HE SAID SHECHEM TO HAMOR FATHER HIS <TO> SAYING GET FOR <THE> ME <OBJ.> THE GIRL <THE> THIS TO A WIFE 4So Shechem told his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as a wife.”
5AND JACOB HE HEARD THAT HE HAD DEFILED <OBJ.> DINAH DAUGHTER HIS AND SONS HIS THEY WERE WITH LIVESTOCK HIS IN THE FIELD AND HE KEPT SILENT JACOB UNTIL CAME THEY 5Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but since his sons were with his livestock in the field, he remained silent about it until they returned.
6AND HE WENT OUT HAMOR [THE] FATHER OF SHECHEM TO JACOB TO SPEAK WITH HIM 6Meanwhile, Shechem’s father Hamor came to speak with Jacob.
7AND [THE] SONS OF JACOB THEY CAME FROM THE FIELD WHEN HEARD THEY AND THEY WERE INDIGNANT THE MEN AND IT BURNED TO <THE> THEM EXCEEDINGLY FOR A DISGRACEFUL FOLLY HE HAD DONE IN ISRAEL BY LYING WITH <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTER OF JACOB AND THUS NOT IT IS DONE 7When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned from the field. They were filled with grief and fury because Shechem had committed an outrage in Israel*NoteCloseOr against Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter— a thing that should not be done.
8AND HE SPOKE HAMOR WITH THEM <TO> SAYING SHECHEM SON MY IT LOVES SELF HIS <IN> DAUGHTER YOUR GIVE PLEASE <OBJ.> HER TO <THE> HIM TO A WIFE 8But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
9AND INTERMARRY WITH WITH <THE> US DAUGHTERS YOUR YOU WILL GIVE TO <THE> US AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS OUR YOU WILL TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES 9Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
10AND WITH US YOU WILL DWELL AND THE LAND IT WILL BE <TO> BEFORE YOU DWELL AND GO ABOUT IN IT AND HAVE POSSESSIONS IN <THE> IT 10You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live here, move about freely, and acquire your own property
11AND HE SAID SHECHEM TO FATHER HER AND TO BROTHERS HER LET ME FIND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR AND [THAT] WHICH YOU WILL SAY TO ME I WILL GIVE 11Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Grant me this favor and I will give you whatever you ask.
12INCREASE ON ME EXCEEDINGLY A BRIDE PRICE AND A GIFT SO LET ME GIVE [IT] JUST AS YOU WILL SAY TO ME AND GIVE TO <THE> ME <OBJ.> THE GIRL TO A WIFE 12Demand a high dowry and an expensive gift, and I will give you whatever you ask. Only give me the girl as my wife!”
13AND THEY ANSWERED [THE] SONS OF JACOB <OBJ.> SHECHEM AND <OBJ.> HAMOR FATHER HIS WITH DECEIT AND THEY SPOKE THAT HE HAD DEFILED <OBJ.> DINAH SISTER THEIR The Revenge of Dinah’s Brothers 13But because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah, Jacob’s sons answered him and his father Hamor deceitfully.
14AND THEY SAID TO THEM NOT WE ARE ABLE TO DO THE THING <THE> THIS TO GIVE <OBJ.> SISTER OUR TO A MAN WHOM [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM A FORESKIN FOR [IS] A REPROACH IT TO <THE> US 14“We cannot do such a thing,” they said. “To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be a disgrace to us.
15ONLY IN THIS WE WILL AGREE TO <THE> YOU IF YOU WILL BE LIKE US BY BEING CIRCUMCISED OF YOU EVERY MALE 15We will consent to this on one condition, that you become circumcised like us— every one of your males.
16AND WE WILL GIVE <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS OUR TO <THE> YOU AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS YOUR WE WILL TAKE FOR <THE> OURSELVES AND WE WILL DWELL WITH YOU AND WE WILL BECOME <INTO> A PEOPLE ONE 16Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We will dwell among you and become one people.
17AND IF NOT YOU WILL LISTEN TO US BY BEING CIRCUMCISED AND WE WILL TAKE <OBJ.> DAUGHTER OUR AND WE WILL GO 17But if you will not agree to be circumcised, then we will take our sister and go.”
18AND THEY WERE GOOD WORDS THEIR IN [THE] EYES OF HAMOR AND IN [THE] EYES OF SHECHEM [THE] SON OF HAMOR 18Their offer seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
19AND NOT HE DELAYED THE YOUNG MAN TO DO THE THING FOR HE DELIGHTED IN [THE] DAUGHTER OF JACOB AND HE [WAS] HONORED MORE THAN ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER HIS 19The young man, who was the most respected of all his father’s household, did not hesitate to fulfill this request, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.
20AND HE WENT HAMOR AND SHECHEM SON HIS TO [THE] GATE OF CITY THEIR AND THEY SPOKE TO [THE] MEN OF CITY THEIR <TO> SAYING 20So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and addressed the men of their city:
21THE MEN <THE> THESE [ARE] AT PEACE THEY WITH US AND LET THEM DWELL IN THE LAND AND LET THEM GO ABOUT IN <OBJ.> IT AND THE LAND THERE! [IS] BROAD OF BOTH HANDS <TO> BEFORE THEM <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS THEIR WE WILL TAKE FOR <THE> OURSELVES TO WIVES AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS OUR WE WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM 21“These men are at peace with us. Let them live and trade in our land; indeed, it is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage and give our daughters to them.
22ONLY IN THIS THEY WILL AGREE TO <THE> US THE MEN TO DWELL WITH US TO BECOME <INTO> A PEOPLE ONE WHEN HAS BEEN CIRCUMCISED OF US EVERY MALE JUST AS THEY [ARE] CIRCUMCISED 22But only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us and be one people: if all our men are circumcised as they are.
23LIVESTOCK THEIR AND POSSESSION[S] THEIR AND ALL ANIMAL[S] THEIR ¿ NOT [BELONG] TO <THE> US [WILL] THEY ONLY LET US AGREE WITH <THE> THEM AND LET THEM DWELL WITH US 23Will not their livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell among us.”
24AND THEY LISTENED TO HAMOR AND TO SHECHEM SON HIS ALL [THOSE WHO] WENT OUT OF [THE] GATE OF CITY HIS AND THEY WERE CIRCUMCISED EVERY MALE ALL [THOSE WHO] WENT OUT OF [THE] GATE OF CITY HIS 24All the men who went out of the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male of the city was circumcised.
25AND IT WAS ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD WHEN WERE THEY IN PAIN AND THEY TOOK TWO OF [THE] SONS OF JACOB SIMEON AND LEVI [THE] BROTHERS OF DINAH EACH SWORD HIS AND THEY WENT ON THE CITY SECURITY AND THEY KILLED EVERY MALE 25Three days later, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons (Dinah’s brothers Simeon and Levi) took their swords, went into the unsuspecting city, and slaughtered every male.
26AND <OBJ.> HAMOR AND <OBJ.> SHECHEM SON HIS THEY SLEW TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> DINAH FROM [THE] HOUSE OF SHECHEM AND THEY WENT OUT 26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
27[THE] SONS OF JACOB THEY CAME ON THE [ONES] SLAIN AND THEY PLUNDERED THE CITY THAT PEOPLE HAD DEFILED SISTER THEIR 27Jacob’s other sons came upon the slaughter and looted the city, because their sister had been defiled.
28<OBJ.> FLOCK[S] THEIR AND <OBJ.> HERD[S] THEIR AND <OBJ.> DONKEYS THEIR AND <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH [WAS] IN THE CITY AND <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH [WAS] IN THE FIELD THEY TOOK 28They took their flocks and herds and donkeys, and everything else in the city or in the field.
29AND <OBJ.> ALL WEALTH THEIR AND <OBJ.> ALL LITTLE ONE[S] THEIR AND <OBJ.> WIVES THEIR THEY TOOK CAPTIVE AND THEY PLUNDERED AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT [WAS] IN THE HOUSE 29They carried off all their possessions and women and children, and they plundered everything in their houses.
30AND HE SAID JACOB TO SIMEON AND TO LEVI YOU HAVE TROUBLED <OBJ.> ME BY MAKING ODIOUS ME AMONG [THE] INHABITANT[S] OF THE LAND AMONG THE CANAANITE[S] AND AMONG THE PERIZZITE[S] AND I [AM] MEN OF NUMBER AND THEY WILL GATHER ON ME AND THEY WILL ATTACK ME AND I WILL BE DESTROYED I AND HOUSEHOLD MY 30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people of this land. We are few in number; if they unite against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31AND THEY SAID ¿ LIKE A PROSTITUTE WILL HE USE <OBJ.> SISTER OUR 31But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
