34AND YOU WILL SAY MEN OF LIVESTOCK THEY HAVE BEEN SERVANTS YOUR SINCE YOUTH<S> OUR AND UNTIL NOW BOTH WE AS WELL AS FATHERS OUR IN ORDER THAT YOU MAY DWELL IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN FOR [IS] [THE] ABOMINATION OF EGYPT EVERY SHEPHERD OF SHEEP 34you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”
1AND HE WENT JOSEPH AND HE TOLD TO PHARAOH AND HE SAID FATHER MY AND BROTHERS MY AND FLOCK[S] THEIR AND HERD[S] THEIR AND ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO THEM THEY HAVE COME FROM [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND THERE THEY [ARE] IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN Jacob Settles in Goshen 1So Joseph went and told Pharaoh: “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all they own have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.”
2AND FROM [THE] END OF BROTHERS HIS HE TOOK FIVE MEN AND HE PRESENTED THEM <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH 2And he chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.
3AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO BROTHERS HIS WHAT? [ARE] WORK<S> YOUR AND THEY SAID TO PHARAOH [ARE] HERDER[S] OF SHEEP SERVANTS YOUR BOTH WE AS WELL AS FATHERS OUR 3“What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers. “Your servants are shepherds they replied, “both we and our fathers.”
4AND THEY SAID TO PHARAOH TO SOJOURN IN THE LAND WE HAVE COME FOR THERE NOT [IS] PASTURE FOR THE SHEEP WHICH [BELONGS] TO SERVANTS YOUR FOR [WAS] HEAVY THE FAMINE IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND THEREFORE LET THEM DWELL PLEASE SERVANTS YOUR IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN 4Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, since the famine in the land of Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your servants to settle in the land of Goshen.”
5AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JOSEPH <TO> SAYING FATHER YOUR AND BROTHERS YOUR THEY HAVE COME TO YOU 5Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Now that your father and brothers have come to you,
6[THE] LAND OF EGYPT [IS] <TO> BEFORE YOU IT IN [THE] BEST OF THE LAND CAUSE TO DWELL <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS YOUR LET THEM DWELL IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN AND IF YOU KNOW AND THERE AMONG THEM [ARE] MEN OF ABILITY AND YOU WILL APPOINT THEM OVERSEERS OF LIVESTOCK OVER [THAT] WHICH [BELONGS] TO ME 6the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They may dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any talented men among them, put them in charge of my own livestock
7AND HE BROUGHT JOSEPH <OBJ.> JACOB FATHER HIS AND HE MADE STAND HIM <TO> BEFORE PHARAOH AND HE BLESSED JACOB <OBJ.> PHARAOH 7Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and presented him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8AND HE SAID PHARAOH TO JACOB HOW MANY? [ARE] [THE] DAYS OF [THE] YEARS OF LIFE YOUR 8“How many years have you lived?” Pharaoh asked.
9AND HE SAID JACOB TO PHARAOH [THE] DAYS OF [THE] YEARS OF SOJOURNINGS MY [ARE] THIRTY AND ONE HUNDRED YEAR[S] FEW AND DISPLEASING THEY HAVE BEEN [THE] DAYS OF [THE] YEARS OF LIFE MY AND NOT THEY HAVE REACHED <OBJ.> [THE] DAYS OF [THE] YEARS OF [THE] LIVES OF ANCESTORS MY IN [THE] DAYS OF SOJOURNINGS THEIR 9“My travels*NoteCloseHebrew sojourns; twice in this verse have lasted 130 years,” Jacob replied. “My years have been few and hard, and they have not matched the years of the travels of my fathers.”
10AND HE BLESSED JACOB <OBJ.> PHARAOH AND HE WENT OUT FROM TO BEFORE PHARAOH 10Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from his presence.
11AND HE CAUSED TO DWELL JOSEPH <OBJ.> FATHER HIS AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS HIS AND HE GAVE TO THEM A POSSESSION IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IN [THE] BEST OF THE LAND IN [THE] LAND OF RAMESES JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED PHARAOH 11So Joseph settled his father and brothers in the land of Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12AND HE PROVIDED FOR JOSEPH <OBJ.> FATHER HIS AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER HIS FOOD TO [THE] MOUTH OF THE LITTLE ONE[S] 12Joseph also provided his father and brothers and all his father’s household with food for their families.
13AND [WAS] FOOD THERE NOT IN ALL THE LAND FOR [WAS] HEAVY THE FAMINE VERY AND IT LANGUISHED [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND [THE] LAND OF CANAAN <FROM> BECAUSE OF THE FAMINE The Famine Continues 13There was no food, however, in all that region, because the famine was so severe; the lands of Egypt and Canaan had been exhausted by the famine.
14AND HE GATHERED UP JOSEPH <OBJ.> ALL THE MONEY WHICH WAS FOUND IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN FOR THE GRAIN WHICH THEY [WERE] BUYING GRAIN AND HE BROUGHT JOSEPH <OBJ.> THE MONEY [THE] HOUSE OF TOWARDS PHARAOH 14Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were buying, and he brought it into Pharaoh’s palace.
15AND IT WAS FINISHED THE MONEY FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND FROM [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND THEY CAME ALL EGYPT TO JOSEPH <TO> SAYING GIVE! TO US FOOD AND <TO> WHY? WILL WE DIE BEFORE YOU FOR IT HAS COME TO AN END MONEY 15When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? For our funds have run out!”
16AND HE SAID JOSEPH GIVE LIVESTOCK YOUR SO LET ME GIVE [IT] TO YOU FOR LIVESTOCK YOUR IF IT HAS COME TO AN END MONEY 16“Then bring me your livestock,” said Joseph. “Since the money is gone, I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock.”
17AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> LIVESTOCK THEIR TO JOSEPH AND HE GAVE TO THEM JOSEPH FOOD FOR THE HORSES AND FOR [THE] LIVESTOCK OF THE FLOCK[S] AND FOR [THE] LIVESTOCK OF THE HERD[S] AND FOR THE DONKEYS AND HE REFRESHED THEM WITH <THE> FOOD FOR ALL LIVESTOCK THEIR IN THE YEAR <THE> THAT 17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their flocks and herds, and their donkeys. Throughout that year he provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18AND IT WAS FINISHED THE YEAR <THE> THAT AND THEY CAME TO HIM IN THE YEAR <THE> SECOND AND THEY SAID TO HIM NOT WE WILL HIDE FROM LORD MY THAT EXCEPT IT HAS BEEN FINISHED THE MONEY AND [THE] LIVESTOCK OF THE CATTLE [IS] TO LORD MY NOT IT IS LEFT <TO> BEFORE LORD MY EXCEPT <IF> BODY OUR AND LAND OUR 18When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said “We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and all our livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.
19<TO> WHY? WILL WE DIE TO EYES YOUR BOTH WE AS WELL AS LAND OUR BUY <OBJ.> US AND <OBJ.> LAND OUR FOR <THE> FOOD SO WE MAY BE WE AND LAND OUR SLAVES OF PHARAOH AND GIVE SEED SO WE MAY LIVE AND NOT WE WILL DIE AND THE LAND NOT IT WILL BE DESOLATE 19Why should we perish before your eyes— we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”
20AND HE BOUGHT JOSEPH <OBJ.> ALL [THE] LAND OF EGYPT TO PHARAOH FOR THEY SOLD EGYPT EVERYONE FIELD HIS FOR IT WAS SEVERE ON THEM THE FAMINE AND IT BE[LONGED] THE LAND TO PHARAOH 20So Joseph acquired for Pharaoh all the land in Egypt; the Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields because the famine was so severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s,
21AND <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE HE BROUGHT IN <OBJ.> IT TO THE CITIES FROM [THE] END OF [THE] TERRITORY OF EGYPT AND TO END ITS 21and Joseph reduced the people to servitude*NoteCloseSP, LXX, Vulgate; Hebrew removed the people to the cities from one end of Egypt to the other.
22ONLY [THE] LAND OF THE PRIESTS NOT HE BOUGHT FOR AN ALLOWANCE [BELONGED] TO THE PRIESTS FROM WITH PHARAOH AND THEY EAT <OBJ.> ALLOWANCE THEIR WHICH HE GAVE TO THEM PHARAOH THERE- -FORE NOT THEY SOLD <OBJ.> LAND THEIR 22However, he did not acquire the priests’ portion of the land, for it had been given to them by Pharaoh. They ate the rations that. Pharaoh supplied so they did not sell their land.
23AND HE SAID JOSEPH TO THE PEOPLE HERE! I HAVE BOUGHT <OBJ.> YOU THIS DAY AND <OBJ.> LAND YOUR FOR PHARAOH HERE! FOR YOU [IS] SEED AND YOU WILL SOW <OBJ.> THE LAND 23Then Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh this day here is seed for you to sow in the land.
24AND IT WILL BE AT THE HARVEST<S> AND YOU WILL GIVE A FIFTH TO PHARAOH AND [THE] FOUR THE HANDS IT WILL BE[LONG] TO YOU TO [THE] SEED OF THE FIELD AND TO FOOD YOUR AND FOR [THOSE] WHO [ARE] IN HOUSEHOLDS YOUR AND TO EAT FOR LITTLE ONE[S] YOUR 24At harvest time, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and food for yourselves and your households and children.”
25AND THEY SAID YOU HAVE PRESERVED ALIVE US MAY WE FIND FAVOR IN [THE] EYES OF LORD MY AND WE WILL BE SLAVES OF PHARAOH 25“You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
26AND HE ESTABLISHED <OBJ.> IT JOSEPH TO A STATUTE UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS ON [THE] LAND OF EGYPT [BELONGS] TO PHARAOH TO THE FIFTH PART ONLY [THE] LAND OF THE PRIESTS TO ALONE THEM NOT IT BELONGED TO PHARAOH 26So Joseph established a law that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh, and it is in effect in the land of Egypt to this day. Only the priests’ land does not belong to Pharaoh.
27AND HE DWELT ISRAEL IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN AND THEY HAD POSSESSIONS IN IT AND THEY WERE FRUITFUL AND THEY MULTIPLIED EXCEEDINGLY The Israelites Prosper in Goshen 27Now the Israelites settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and became fruitful and increased greatly in number.
28AND HE LIVED JACOB IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT SEVEN- TEEN YEAR[S] AND IT WAS [THE] DAYS OF JACOB [THE] YEARS OF LIFE HIS SEVEN YEARS AND FORTY AND ONE HUNDRED YEAR[S] 28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the length of his life was 147 years.
29AND THEY DREW NEAR [THE] DAYS OF ISRAEL TO DIE AND HE SUMMONED <TO> SON HIS <TO> JOSEPH AND HE SAID TO HIM IF PLEASE I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR PUT PLEASE HAND YOUR UNDER THIGH MY AND YOU WILL DO WITH ME LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS MAY NOT PLEASE YOU BURY ME IN EGYPT 29When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,
30AND I WILL LIE DOWN WITH ANCESTORS MY AND YOU WILL CARRY ME FROM EGYPT AND YOU WILL BURY ME IN GRAVE THEIR AND HE SAID I I WILL DO ACCORDING TO WORD YOUR 30but when I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me with them.” Joseph answered, “I will do as you have requested.”
31AND HE SAID SWEAR AN OATH! TO ME AND HE SWORE AN OATH TO HIM AND HE BOWED DOWN ISRAEL ON [THE] HEAD OF THE BED 31“Swear to me,” Jacob said.
