31AND HE SAID SWEAR AN OATH! TO ME AND HE SWORE AN OATH TO HIM AND HE BOWED DOWN ISRAEL ON [THE] HEAD OF THE BED 31“Swear to me,” Jacob said. 1AND IT WAS AFTER THE THINGS <THE> THESE AND SOMEONE SAID TO JOSEPH THERE! FATHER YOUR [IS] SICK AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] TWO SONS HIS WITH HIM <OBJ.> MANASSEH AND <OBJ.> EPHRAIM Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh 1Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he set out with his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
2AND SOMEONE TOLD TO JACOB AND HE SAID HERE! SON YOUR JOSEPH HE HAS COME TO YOU AND HE STRENGTHENED HIMSELF ISRAEL AND HE SAT ON THE BED 2When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel rallied his strength and sat up in bed.
3AND HE SAID JACOB TO JOSEPH GOD ALMIGHTY HE APPEARED TO ME AT LUZ IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> ME 3Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty*NoteCloseHebrew El-Shaddai appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there He blessed me
4AND HE SAID TO ME HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO MAKE FRUITFUL YOU AND I WILL MULTIPLY YOU AND I WILL MAKE YOU <INTO> A COMPANY OF PEOPLES AND I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> THIS TO OFFSPRING YOUR AFTER YOU A POSSESSION OF PERPETUITY 4and told me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you; I will make you a multitude of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’
5AND NOW [THE] TWO SONS YOUR WHO WERE BORN TO YOU IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT UNTIL CAME I TO YOU EGYPT TOWARDS [BELONG] TO ME THEY EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH LIKE REUBEN AND SIMEON THEY WILL BE[LONG] TO ME 5And now your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here shall be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.
6AND OFFSPRING YOUR WHOM YOU HAVE FATHERED AFTER THEM TO <THE> YOU THEY WILL BE[LONG] ON [THE] NAME OF BROTHERS THEIR THEY WILL BE CALLED IN INHERITANCE THEIR 6Any children born to you after them shall be yours, and they shall be called by the names of their brothers in the territory they inherit.
7AND I WHEN CAME I FROM PADDAN SHE DIED ON ME RACHEL IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN ON THE JOURNEY AT YET A DISTANCE OF LAND TO GO EPHRATHAH AND I BURIED HER THERE ON [THE] JOURNEY OF EPHRATH THAT [IS] BETH- -LEHEM 7Now as for me, when I was returning from Paddan,*NoteCloseThat is, northwest Mesopotamia to my sorrow Rachel died along the way in the land of Canaan, some distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).
8AND HE SAW ISRAEL <OBJ.> [THE] SONS OF JOSEPH AND HE SAID WHO? [ARE] THESE 8When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, “Who are these?”
9AND HE SAID JOSEPH TO FATHER HIS [ARE] SONS MY THEY WHOM HE HAS GIVEN TO ME GOD IN THIS [PLACE] AND HE SAID FETCH THEM PLEASE TO ME SO I MAY BLESS THEM 9Joseph said to his father, “They are the sons God has given me in this place.” So Jacob said, “Please bring them to me, that I may bless them.”
10AND [THE] EYES OF ISRAEL THEY WERE HEAVY FROM OLD AGE NOT HE WAS ABLE TO SEE AND HE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> THEM TO HIM AND HE KISSED <TO> THEM AND HE EMBRACED <TO> THEM 10Now Israel’s eyesight was poor because of old age; he could hardly see. Joseph brought his sons to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.
11AND HE SAID ISRAEL TO JOSEPH TO SEE FACE YOUR NOT I JUDGED AND HERE! HE HAS SHOWN <OBJ.> ME GOD ALSO <OBJ.> OFFSPRING YOUR 11“I never expected to see your face again,” Israel said to Joseph, “but now God has let me see your children as well.”
12AND HE TOOK JOSEPH <OBJ.> THEM FROM WITH KNEES HIS AND HE BOWED DOWN TO FACE HIS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS 12Then Joseph removed his sons from his father’s knees and bowed facedown.
13AND HE TOOK JOSEPH <OBJ.> [THE] TWO OF THEM <OBJ.> EPHRAIM AT RIGHT [HAND] HIS FROM [THE] LEFT OF ISRAEL AND <OBJ.> MANASSEH AT LEFT [HAND] HIS FROM [THE] RIGHT OF ISRAEL AND HE BROUGHT [THEM] NEAR TO HIM 13And Joseph took both of them— with Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand— and brought them close to him.
14AND HE STRETCHED OUT ISRAEL <OBJ.> RIGHT [HAND] HIS AND HE PUT [IT] ON [THE] HEAD OF EPHRAIM AND HE [WAS] THE YOUNG AND <OBJ.> LEFT [HAND] HIS ON [THE] HEAD OF MANASSEH HE LAID CROSS-WISE <OBJ.> HANDS HIS FOR MANASSEH [WAS] THE FIRSTBORN 14But Israel stretched out his right hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger; and crossing his hands, he put his left on Manasseh’s head, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
15AND HE BLESSED <OBJ.> JOSEPH AND HE SAID <THE> GOD WHOM THEY WALKED ABOUT FATHERS MY <TO> BEFORE HIM ABRAHAM AND ISAAC <THE> GOD WHO SHEPHERDED <OBJ.> ME FROM DURATION MY UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 15Then he blessed Joseph and said: “May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
16THE ANGEL WHO HAS REDEEMED <OBJ.> ME FROM ALL HARM MAY HE BLESS <OBJ.> THE LADS AND MAY IT BE CALLED IN THEM NAME MY AND [THE] NAME OF FATHERS MY ABRAHAM AND ISAAC AND MAY THEY MULTIPLY TO ABUNDANCE IN [THE] MIDST OF THE EARTH 16the angel*NoteCloseOr Angel who has redeemed me from all harm— may He bless these boys. And may they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
17AND HE SAW JOSEPH THAT HE WILL PUT FATHER HIS [THE] HAND OF RIGHT HIS ON [THE] HEAD OF EPHRAIM AND IT WAS DISPLEASING IN VIEW HIS AND HE GRASPED [THE] HAND OF FATHER HIS TO REMOVE <OBJ.> IT FROM ON [THE] HEAD OF EPHRAIM ON [THE] HEAD OF MANASSEH 17When Joseph saw that his father had placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head, he was displeased and took his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s.
18AND HE SAID JOSEPH TO FATHER HIS NOT THUS O FATHER MY FOR THIS [IS] THE FIRSTBORN PUT RIGHT [HAND] YOUR ON HEAD HIS 18“Not so, my father!” Joseph said This one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”
19AND HE REFUSED FATHER HIS AND HE SAID I KNOW O SON MY I KNOW ALSO HE HE WILL BECOME <INTO> A PEOPLE AND ALSO HE HE WILL BECOME GREAT AND BUT BROTHER HIS <THE> YOUNG HE WILL BECOME GREAT MORE THAN HIM AND OFFSPRING HIS IT WILL BE [THE] FULLNESS OF THE NATIONS 19But his father refused. “I know, my son, I know!” he said. “He too shall become a people, and he too shall be great; nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.”
20AND HE BLESSED THEM ON THE DAY <THE> THAT <TO> SAYING BY YOU IT WILL BLESS ISRAEL <TO> SAYING MAY HE MAKE YOU GOD LIKE EPHRAIM AND LIKE MANASSEH AND HE PUT <OBJ.> EPHRAIM <TO> BEFORE MANASSEH 20So that day Jacob blessed them and said: “By you shall Israel pronounce this blessing: ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’” So he put Ephraim before Manasseh.
21AND HE SAID ISRAEL TO JOSEPH HERE! I [AM] ABOUT TO DIE AND HE WILL BE GOD WITH YOU AND HE WILL BRING BACK <OBJ.> YOU TO [THE] LAND OF FATHERS YOUR 21Then Israel said to Joseph, “Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
22AND I I GIVE TO YOU A SHOULDER ONE OVER BROTHERS YOUR WHICH I TOOK FROM [THE] HAND OF THE AMORITE[S] BY SWORD MY AND BY BOW MY 22And to you, as one who is above your brothers, I give the ridge of land*NoteCloseOr one portion of the land; Hebrew shekem, which sounds like the town and district called Shechem that I took from the Amorites with my sword and bow.”
