33AND HE FINISHED JACOB TO COMMAND <OBJ.> SONS HIS AND HE GATHERED FEET HIS INTO THE BED AND HE EXPIRED AND HE WAS GATHERED TO PEOPLES HIS 33When Jacob had finished instructing his sons, he pulled his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and he was gathered to his people.
1AND HE FELL JOSEPH ON [THE] FACE OF FATHER HIS AND HE WEPT OVER HIM AND HE KISSED <TO> HIM Mourning and Burial for Jacob 1Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face, wept over him, and kissed him.
2AND HE COMMANDED JOSEPH <OBJ.> SERVANTS HIS <OBJ.> THE PHYSICIANS TO EMBALM <OBJ.> FATHER HIS AND THEY EMBALMED THE PHYSICIANS <OBJ.> ISRAEL 2And Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So they embalmed him,
3AND THEY WERE COMPLETED FOR HIM FORTY DAY[S] FOR THUS THEY WERE COMPLETED [THE] DAYS OF THE EMBALMING<S> AND THEY WEPT FOR <OBJ.> HIM EGYPT SEVENTY DAY[S] 3taking the forty days required to complete. the embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
4AND THEY PASSED [THE] DAYS OF WEEPING HIS AND HE SPOKE JOSEPH TO [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF PHARAOH <TO> SAYING IF PLEASE I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR SPEAK PLEASE IN [THE] EARS OF PHARAOH <TO> SAYING 4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please tell Pharaoh that
5FATHER MY HE MADE SWEAR AN OATH ME <TO> SAYING HERE! I [AM] ABOUT TO DIE IN GRAVE MY WHICH I DUG FOR MYSELF IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN THERE <TOWARDS> YOU WILL BURY ME AND THEREFORE LET ME GO UP PLEASE SO I MAY BURY <OBJ.> FATHER MY AND I WILL RETURN 5my father made me swear an oath when he said,. I am about to die. You must bury me in the tomb that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.’ Now let me go and bury my father, and then return.”
6AND HE SAID PHARAOH GO UP AND BURY <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR JUST AS HE MADE SWEAR YOU 6Pharaoh replied, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”
7AND HE WENT UP JOSEPH TO BURY <OBJ.> FATHER HIS AND THEY WENT UP WITH HIM ALL [THE] SERVANTS OF PHARAOH [THE] ELDERS OF HOUSEHOLD HIS AND ALL [THE] ELDERS OF [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 7Then Joseph went to bury his father, and all the servants of Pharaoh accompanied him— the elders of Pharaoh’s household and all the elders of the land of Egypt—
8AND ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF JOSEPH AND BROTHERS HIS AND [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER HIS ONLY LITTLE ONE[S] THEIR AND SHEEP THEIR AND CATTLE THEIR THEY LEFT IN [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN 8along with all of Joseph’s household, and his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children and flocks and herds were left in Goshen.
9AND IT WENT UP WITH HIM BOTH CHARIOTRY AS WELL AS HORSEMEN AND IT WAS THE COMPANY NUMEROUS VERY 9Chariots and horsemen alike went up with him, and it was an exceedingly large procession.
10AND THEY CAME TO [THE] THRESHING FLOOR OF <THE> ATAD WHICH [IS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN AND THEY LAMENTED THERE A LAMENT GREAT AND HEAVY VERY AND HE MADE FOR FATHER HIS MOURNING SEVEN DAYS 10When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they lamented and wailed loudly, and Joseph mourned for his father seven days.
11AND HE SAW [THE] INHABITANT[S] OF THE LAND THE CANAANITE[S] <OBJ.> THE MOURNING AT [THE] THRESHING FLOOR OF <THE> ATAD AND THEY SAID [IS] MOURNING HEAVY THIS FOR EGYPT THERE- -FORE SOMEONE CALLED NAME ITS ABEL MIZRAIM WHICH [IS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN 11When the Canaanites of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn ceremony of mourning by the Egyptians.” Thus the place across the Jordan is called Abel-mizraim.*NoteCloseAbel-mizraim means mourning of the Egyptians.
12AND THEY DID SONS HIS FOR HIM THUS JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED THEM 12So Jacob’s sons did as he had charged them.
13AND THEY CARRIED <OBJ.> HIM SONS HIS [THE] LAND OF TOWARDS CANAAN AND THEY BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN [THE] CAVE OF [THE] FIELD OF <THE> MACHPELAH WHICH HE HAD BOUGHT ABRAHAM <OBJ.> THE FIELD TO A POSSESSION OF A BURIAL SITE FROM WITH EPHRON THE HITTITE ON [THE] FACE OF MAMRE 13They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave at Machpelah in the field near Mamre, which Abraham had purchased from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.
14AND HE WENT BACK JOSEPH EGYPT TOWARDS HE AND BROTHERS HIS AND ALL THOSE [WHO] HAD GONE UP WITH HIM TO BURY <OBJ.> FATHER HIS AFTER HAD BURIED HE <OBJ.> FATHER HIS 14After Joseph had buried his father, he returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone with him to bury his father.
15AND THEY SAW [THE] BROTHERS OF JOSEPH THAT HE HAD DIED FATHER THEIR AND THEY SAID IF HE WILL BEAR A GRUDGE US JOSEPH AND CERTAINLY <TO REPAY> HE WILL REPAY TO US <OBJ.> ALL THE HARM WHICH WE DEALT OUT TO <OBJ.> HIM Joseph Comforts His Brothers 15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge? Then he will surely repay us for all the evil that we did to him.”
16AND THEY COMMANDED TO JOSEPH <TO> SAYING FATHER YOUR HE COMMANDED <TO> BEFORE DEATH HIS <TO> SAYING 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Before he died, your father commanded,
17THUS YOU WILL SAY TO JOSEPH WE BEG YOU FORGIVE PLEASE [THE] TRANSGRESSION OF BROTHERS YOUR AND SIN THEIR FOR EVIL THEY DEALT OUT TO YOU AND NOW FORGIVE PLEASE TO [THE] TRANSGRESSION OF [THE] SERVANTS OF [THE] GOD OF FATHER YOUR AND HE WEPT JOSEPH WHEN SPOKE THEY TO HIM 17‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I beg you, please forgive the transgression and sin of your brothers, for they did you wrong.’ So now, Joseph, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.
18AND THEY WENT ALSO BROTHERS HIS AND THEY FELL <TO> BEFORE HIM AND THEY SAID HERE WE [BELONG] TO YOU TO SLAVES 18His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”
19AND HE SAID TO THEM JOSEPH MAY NOT YOU FEAR THAT ¿ IN PLACE OF GOD [AM] I 19But Joseph replied, “Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God?
20AND YOU YOU PLANNED ON ME HARM GOD HE PLANNED IT FOR GOOD SO AS TO ACT AS THE DAY <THE> THIS TO PRESERVE ALIVE A PEOPLE NUMEROUS 20As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish a day like this— to preserve the lives of many people.
21AND THEREFORE MAY NOT YOU FEAR I I WILL PROVIDE FOR <OBJ.> YOU AND <OBJ.> LITTLE ONE[S] YOUR AND HE COMFORTED <OBJ.> THEM AND HE SPOKE TO HEART THEIR 21Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” So Joseph reassured his brothers and spoke kindly to them.
22AND HE REMAINED JOSEPH IN EGYPT HE AND [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER HIS AND HE LIVED JOSEPH ONE HUNDRED AND TEN YEARS The Death of Joseph 22Now Joseph and his father’s household remained in Egypt, and Joseph lived to the age of 110.
23AND HE SAW JOSEPH OF EPHRAIM SONS OF A THIRD GENERATION ALSO [THE] SONS OF MAKIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH THEY WERE BORN ON [THE] KNEES OF JOSEPH 23He saw Ephraim’s sons to the third generation, and indeed the sons of Machir son of Manasseh were brought up*NoteCloseOr born or placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.
24AND HE SAID JOSEPH TO BROTHERS HIS I [AM] ABOUT TO DIE AND GOD CERTAINLY <TO VISIT> HE WILL VISIT <OBJ.> YOU AND HE WILL BRING UP <OBJ.> YOU FROM THE LAND <THE> THIS TO THE LAND WHICH HE SWORE TO ABRAHAM TO ISAAC AND TO JACOB 24Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely visit you and bring you up from this land to the land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
25AND HE MADE TO SWEAR AN OATH JOSEPH <OBJ.> [THE] SONS OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING CERTAINLY <TO VISIT> HE WILL VISIT GOD <OBJ.> YOU AND YOU WILL BRING UP <OBJ.> BONES MY FROM HERE 25And Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath and said, “God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”
26AND HE DIED JOSEPH A SON OF ONE HUNDRED AND TEN YEARS AND PEOPLE EMBALMED <OBJ.> HIM AND HE WAS PUT IN THE COFFIN IN EGYPT 26So Joseph died at the age of 110. And they embalmed his body and placed it in a coffin in Egypt.
